葛藤がありました。I was torn between two ideas.
こんなに小さいんだから、まだだよね。It can’t be yet, because they are still so little.
でも、もう、飛べるのかな。But they could fly soon.
2-3日前まで、こんな風にみんなで朝の散歩をしてたのに。It was their daily routine to have a walk like this together till a few days ago.
別れは突然です。最後まで残っていたズアカカンムリウズラのヒナはお父さんと一緒に塀に飛び乗り、巣立っていってしまいました。But the departure came suddenly. The last Gambel’s quail chick went up the fence together with his dad and fledged.
裏庭が急に静かになりました。Our backyard suddenly became so quiet.
突然見えてきたサンゴ色。The orange or pinkish color appeared under the dark clouded sky suddenly.
車を道端に停め、カメラを掴み歩き始めた。We parked our car on the side of the road, grabbed our cameras, and started walking.
バンちゃんより先に歩き始めた私は「ゆっくり歩いて行くね。」と言ったのに、気持ちの高まりに早足を抑えられない。I said to Banchan, “I’ll walk slow” because I started walking before he was even out of the car. But my feet moved faster and faster as, in my excitement, they had minds of their own.
サンゴ色って、どんな色？ How does the color of coral look?
ドンドン、どんどん砂丘を一人で登って行く。I walked up the dune higher and higher alone.
もう沈みかけてる太陽の光が雲間から少しだけ出てきた。It wasn’t much, but the sunset light came out through the thick clouds.
砂丘大好き。I love sand dunes!
コーラルピンク砂丘州立公園には一度訪れた事があります。でも、その時はがっかりしてしまいました。なぜなら ATV (全地形対応車) のタイヤの跡がほとんど全ての砂丘を覆うようについていたからです。ATV 遊戯場と化した公園にガッカリして、ろくに写真も撮らずに帰ってきました。We have visited Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park before. But we were so disappointed because ATV (All Terran Vehicle) tire marks were everywhere. It was an amusement park for ATVs, so we left there without taking pictures.
だから、2度と来る事はないと思ってました。ところが一昨日の豪雨で、風雨がタイヤマークを綺麗に消してくれたんです。豪雨は思っても見なかった素敵な公園を私たちにプレゼントしてくれました。So I thought we would never visit here again, but I was wrong. The thunderstorm erased all the tire marks, and gave us a surprise present of the gorgeous park.
ところで、豪雨の被害は半端ではなく、ザイオン国立公園は今でも復旧作業が続いているようです。St George New のビデオを見ると、結構怖いです。私たちもそんな中にいたわけで、無事に帰ってこられてよかった。By the way, the damage from the thunderstorm two days ago was huge. According to the St George news, the recovery work from it is still going on. Thinking that we were also in the middle of that storm, I am thankful that we could come back home safely. 今朝、夜明け前の空。 This is the sky from right before sunrise this morning.
ザイオン国立公園や、近隣の街では激しい雷雨がありました。バンちゃんは雷の写真を撮るのが好きなので、落雷、豪雨注意報のある場所を目指して出かけました。 We had a thunderstorm near by town and parks like Zion National Park. Banchan likes taking pictures of lightning. So we drove out to places there the weather alerts were on.
389号線、車のフロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雨の中、道路も洪水状態です。It rained so hard that we worried if the front-shield on the car could survibe from it while we run on highway 389. The road was flooded.
雨が治まるのを待ちながら落雷の光る瞬間を捕らえようとしましたが、全滅。タイミングよく光を捕らえるのは、小さな鳥を撮るより難しい。We tried to capture the lightnings when the rain died down time to time, but couldn’t get any of them. It was much harder to capture lightnings than small birds in our cameras.
帰り道、ザイオン国立公園を東口から入って帰路につく計画でしたが、公園内での洪水のため入園止め。思いっきり想定外でした。つまり、再び大きな弧を描いて帰らなければならなくなったのです。 We planned to go back home through Zion National Park from the east entrance, but it was closed off. We didn’t think about it al all, but the park was flooded here and there. So we needed to go back home the way we drove up there by drawing a large arch.
家にたどり着いた時はすでに夜10時すぎ。バンちゃんは疲れ切っていましたが、気分は悪くない。なぜなら、帰途、これまた想定外の自然のプレゼントをもらったからです。そのことに関しては、明日書きます。It was after 10pm when we got back hom. Banchan was so tired from driving but he was rather happy based on my observation. It’s because we’ve received an unexpected present from nature. And I will write all about the present tomorrow.
2年前で出会ってから音信不通だったジェイクが帰ってきました。（2年前のジェイク）It’s been two years since we met Jake, but he is back! (Jake, two years ago)
昨日の裏庭はとても静かだったので、心配していました。もしかしたらカリフォルニアキングスネークのジェイクがいたからかもしれません。 It was so quiet in our backyard yesterday and I was wondering why. It’s possible that it is because Jake, the California Kingsnake, was there. Don’t worry, our Gambel’s quail chicks are safe.
この子、ズアカカンムリウズラのヒナは、日が暮れてもうすぐ真っ暗になる頃、迷子になってしまったようです。ピーピーと10分以上泣き続けていました。 A Gambel’s Quail chick was chirping for more than 10 minutes right before it got dark at sunset two days ago. He/She was lost looking for his/her family frantically.
私たちはどうしたものか、ハラハラです。そんなに大きな声出してたら、ロードランナーや鷹気づかれてしまう。 We weren’t sure what we can do, or what we shouldn’t do. I was so worrying that big birds like Roadrunners or Hawks would hear its chirping and the chick would be eaten.
結局遠くから見守っている間、夜の闇の中に隠れてしまいました。不安な夜が過ぎ、翌朝、4羽のヒナがいる事を確認して胸を撫で下ろしました。 While we simply watched the chick, the darkness of the night fully set in. The next morning after the uneasy night, I could confirm that four chicks were still there. What a relief!
初めて雛がいることに気づいたのは二週間以上前です。グングン成長しているようですが、まだ小学校の低学年という所でしょうか。羽をパタパタさせても、飛べそうでまだ飛べない。4羽のうち3羽はいつもピッタリお母さんの後を追いかけています。でも後の1羽はいつも一人で遅れて追いかけます。自立心が強いのか、鈍感なのか、迷うところでもあります。この子はそんな1羽なのかもしれません。 It was over two weeks ago when I found the quail chicks. They are growing very well since then, but they are like first graders at elementary school. They flap their wings sometimes, but they can’t fly yet. Three out of four chicks are always following their mother closely, but the last one tends to be so late alone. He/she could have an independent streak, or could just not be sharp enough and aware of the changes.
ともあれ、ここまで無事成長してくれたんですよね。11羽からスタートして、今ではたった4羽になってしまったズアカカンムリウズラの子供達。どうぞ無事、この庭から全員飛び立って行けることを待望します。Anyway, they growing up well so far. They started with 11 chicks and now there are only four of them. I simply pray for them to fledge from this garden all together safely soon!
3番目のプロジェクトはお座布団です。私のオフィスにある青い椅子用に作りました。クッションと同じように簡単です。 The third project was “Zabuton” (see Note below). I made it for my blue chair in my office. It was easy like my cushion covers project.
必要性はないとも言えます。でも、布も余っていたのでついでに作ってみたらいい感じ。お気に入りの椅子が、ますます気持ちの良い場所になりました。I made it because I had leftover fabric. My favorite chair became even more comfortable and a special place to be.
今回のホームプロジェクトは、これで終了です。 This will end the Home Project series for this time.
Note: Zabuton is a Japanese sitting cushion normally used on Tatami floor. Because we fold our legs and sit on it, it is evenly flat yet have enough cushion inside to provide comfort for our legs.
青い色のスツールは安価であるにもかかわらず、ホッコリ可愛らしい。愛用させていただいてましたが、色が落ちてきたのでリニューアルをしてみました。思ったような結果にはなりませんでしたが、まあまあ可愛らしくできたと思ってます。 My blue stool was cute, yet very reasonably priced. I like it, but it’s time to do a renewal because the blue color started fading. The result wasn’t the way I imagined it, but I find a unique charming character in it.
布屋さんに行く前に、ノートにザッとアイディアと寸法を書きました。 I wrote down my general idea and measured dimensions before I went to the fabric store.
布はホームプロジェクト①のクッションと同じもの。 I used the same fabric that I used for my cushions, home project #1.
足に着色剤を塗り、暗い色にしました。塗る前にやすりをかけるなど、下準備が必要だったのかもしれません。うまく塗れませんでしたが、ヨシとします。I made the legs darker by applying stain. I assume I should have sanded them down a little before starting to paint, but that’s ok. I know it doesn’t look so good, but that’s ok.
上部のカーブする部分の計算間違いで、帽子を被ったような形になってしまいました。でも、まあー、これも変わったデザイン、愛嬌ということで、ヨシとします。The top of the stool curves elegantly. However, I somehow calculated it wrong. Therefore, it became a stool with a hat. Hmmm. Well, I must say it’s a unique design. That’s it. Isn’t it cute if you look at it like that?
4日間の悪戦苦闘の末のリニューアルです。大切に使っていきます。 It took four days to complete this project. I will treasure it like my baby.
ホームプロジェクト、また始めました。まずはクッションです。作るのに1時間もあればできてしまうのになかなか出来なかったのは、単に面倒くさいから。でも、出来上がってみると、やっぱり新しくしてよかったと思えます。I have started the home project again. To begin, I updated two cushions. It takes only an hour or so, but because I am lazy, I procrastinated. But I am glad that I updated them.

裏布と表布、両方気に入ったので、気分で使い分けできるように両方使いました。 At the fabric store, I found two fabrics that I liked. So I bought both and used one on each side of the cushion. I will flip the cushion around every once in a while when I feel like it.
苦労した所は、コードを挟んで角を縫う所でしょうか。 The difficult thing was to sew the fabric together with the cord in-between. Especially at the corner, it was especially tough.
見知らぬ鳥たちが、塀に飛び乗りやって来た。Unknown birds jumped up onto the wall and came to the backyard.
塀に飛び乗れるだけあって、もうずいぶん大きい。産毛がまだチラホラと見えるけど、シッポも、カンムリもしっかりしてる。They are already large enough that they can jump on the wall. Although I can see baby hair here and there, they already have solid tails and crowns.
それに比べると、うちの子達はまだ彼らの半分ぐらいの大きさ。まるで中学生と幼稚園児みたいだ。Compared to them, our chicks in the backyard are still so tiny, about half of their size. It looks like they are Junior high students, and our chicks are kindergarten kids.
暑い！Hot !
あらら、あなたも？45度は暑すぎますからね。こんな時は休んでいるのが一番。 You, too? Yes, it’s best to simply rest when it’s over 110F.
ということで、私たちはシーダーブレイクス国定公園の夕日を見に行きました。So we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument for sunset.
涼しい！It’s so cool here!
たった 1.5 時間走っただけで、雪がまだ残っている山道を歩けるなんて最高です。It takes us only 1.5 hours of driving to get here where we could enjoy hiking the trail where snow still remains. How lucky we are!
早く！イガ五葉松の棲息する場所までもう一息。Hurry! The Bristlecone Pine tree forest is almost there.
1500 年も生きている老木は、いつ見てもダンスしてるように楽しそう。The old trees that have lived 1500 years look always to be so happily dancing.
雨が時折パラつく日でしたが、時々光る景色を求めて清々しいひと時を過ごしてきました。It was a day with an occasional sprinkles, but we enjoyed it very much by looking for shining places illuminated by sunset light.

最近メグロトウヒ君は主のような振る舞いをしています。Abert’s Towhee acts like he owns the backyard these days.
水鉢を独り占めにしたり、ハウスフィンチを追い出したり。挙げ句の果てにカメラまで倒してしまいます。そのおかげで尻尾の長いウィップテイルやウズラの子供の映像も撮れましたけどね。 水はみんなのものなのよ！He stays there forever at the water bowl, chases away the house finch, and on top of that, he knocks down the camera, as well. Because of that, we could get a video of a Western Whiptail lizard, and a cute quail chick, but he should behave himself. Share! OK?
