Aspen in the Rain

We went out towards Navajo Lake to see if the Aspen trees had started to change color.

I spotted Aspen trees turning yellow beyond the flock of sheep. Changes in the color of the trees announce the changing of the seasons.

Unfortunately, it was raining, so we could only admire the yellowing aspen trees from inside the car.

It’s the sort of path I’d definitely want to walk along if the weather were fine.

This was Maple, who patiently stayed in my arms while I was taking photos.

“Maple, Aspen are my favorite trees.”

“Why?”

“Because every time the wind blows, the tiny leaves flutter in the breeze, just like fairies dancing.”

”Wow, look at that. There’s a rainbow in the sky. You can often see rainbows after it has rained.”

“Why?” said Maple.

“Well, it’s because the sunlight hits the raindrops, and the light that’s reflected from them appears in the colors of the rainbow.”

“Hmm, but raindrops aren’t colored, are they?”

“That’s true. However, it’s rather strange, but they say that when light enters a water droplet and is reflected, it is broken down into colors ranging from purple to red.”

“Is that so? I wonder if there’s any yellow in a rainbow?”

“Of course it’s in there.”

“Well then, are the yellow leaves in Aspen part of the rainbow too?”

“Maple, that’s a tricky question. But, for now, I’ll just say it isn’t part of the rainbow. The relationship between light and color is a bit complicated, so we’ll talk about it next time,” I replied, though I thought to myself that I’d probably never be able to answer her questions properly.

As it was Maple’s first time experiencing rain, she must have found plenty of things rather strange that day.

Aspen, in the rain, has a gentle, tranquil atmosphere.
