Who Opened A Door

We met the owner of #1 eye at Bowman Lake located on the north west portion of Glacier National Park. I must say without exaggeration that this eye lead us to the most memorable park experience ever.

The most popular road, Going-to-the-Sun road, is limited only to entrance pass ticket holder (in addition to the park pass). Needless to say that tickets sell out immediately. They reserve 400 tickets to be sold two days before the date, but is also impossible to get. So the people like us who couldn’t get it from either option need to look for an alternative, such as the Red Bus Tours. Unfortunately, this option is nearly impossible as well. The seats sell out instantly. So it was quite challenging to us to view the famous glaciers in the park.

Bowman Lake, located at North West of the park.

Having said that, a month before I could miraculously purchase two tickets for the Red Bus tour. We drove up to the entrance gate with excitement in the morning. However, to keep the story short, we couldn’t go in because the tickets I bought was exactly one month ago instead of the day we were there.

Because you need to drive unpaved road for a long time to get there, it was a very quiet lake with only few visitors.

It was a huge careless mistake. I was quite depressed by it. I paid for it, but we couldn’t enter the park. What could we do? I felt so sorry for Banchan because he drove three days to get here from home.

My heart sank and felt like crying. Then I met this bird, a sandpiper at Bowman lake.

I have never seen a Sandpiper sitting like this by the shore.

While I was taking the sandpiper’s pictures, my sunken feeling gradually lifted. Taking pictures is my meditation. It was at that time we met another couple there. We talked about the sandpipers (there was actually a pair of them) and had quite a good time. It was because of the sandpipers that we could meet that couple. They shared with us their park experiences and valuable information that helped us a lot for the following days.

Life is full of surprises. One door closed for us but a new door opened for us by these sandpipers. Our wonderful trip started from then on.

Thank you guys for guiding us to the wonderful people!”

Oh? What are you eating?”

Sorry for disturbing you guys so long. Good night~”

I wonder if they have a dominant foot to stand while they sleep. I always want to ask them that, but….

Who We Met at the Fen

I met this eye at a fen, a type of wetland along Camas Rd in Glacier National Park.

The fen spread out far away. I was aimlessly looking at it, when suddenly a cry “There is a sandhill crane!” said Banchan. I looked out there very very hard, then found it. It was roaming slowly and gracefully.

It was a comforting view which I just wanted to enjoy, but I couldn’t let go of this chance. So, I quickly changed my lens to 800mm because I wanted to follow the crane. But suddenly a fawn jumped out in front of me.

Yes, the #2 eye was the fawn. It was too close to me to capture it with my 800mm lens. I walked further away and took this picture.

While I was still struggling to get more distance, the fawn winked at me and disappeared into the vast fen.

Will all white spots on the fawn disappear in fall?

The fen was once again surrounded in silence after the fawns ran away.

Who Am Eye?

We were out of town for a while, and we had many encounters during the trip.

Who am I?

Stay tuned to find out who they are!

Bobby Came to Visit Again!

I was out for my dance lesson. When I came back home around 7:00pm, Banchan was so excited and showed me his video. Bobby the bobcat cub and his mom were there in our backyard around 6:20pm. Bobby was so joyfully, playing around there when Banchan found them there.

Banchan told me that he was so dumbfounded because it was such an unexpected sight, that he couldn’t move. He finally realized that his iPad was near-by, so he took some video before they left.

In the meantime, our security camera also captured their figures around 4:00am. It seems that they are active before dawn, but it’s rare for them to visit our backyard before sunset.

I immediately got five videos from Banchan as well as the security camera, edited them, and made a short video. I was deeply moved by my own video because I could see their lives full of love through the video.

Foresight

How could it change my life if I can predict the future even by only one second?

A gadget that Banchan had ordered a while back arrived yesterday. It can predict the future!

Of course, no such device like this actually exists. It senses an infrared flash from a lightning bolt that precedes the visible flash. The great feature of the gadget is that once it catches the infrared signal, it triggers the camera shutter so that you can get a lightning shot effortlessly.

To test drive such a great gadget, we traveled south to Arizona because the weather radar was showing activity in that area.

Yes, it was a perfect place. We could see many thick clouds coming towards us from the south.

As the clouds came closer to us, the sound of thunder was getting louder and the sky was getting darker.

Banchan’s camera with the gadget attached had already captured about 5 lightning shots.

On the other hand, my camera with no gadget had over 1000 shots because I kept pressing the shutter button every half second. … but have I captured any lightning?

This is the one and only shot that captured a lightning bolt.

I thought I didn’t get any, so I was delighted when I found this tiny lightning image.

Now I understood what it means. I am happy without any great gadget as long as I can get one good shot.

Monsoon

I was told that the monsoon season has started. This is our first experience since we moved to this area.

No wonder we had “Flash-flood warning” or “Heavy rain warning” sent to our cell phones often. However, we have had only one heavy rain and a few scattered showers so far.

In any case, we simply enjoy the different faces of mother nature. I can see a thunderstorm far away on the horizon. She showed us such a grand sky today.

Storm Chaser

Banchan is into Lightning Photography these days. So I joined him and became a storm chaser.

And this is my debut shot.

I pushed the camera’s shutter button 479 times, and this is the only shot that captured lightning.

To capture any lightning, you have to start pushing the shutter button one tenth of second before it lit the sky. In other words, you need to predict the future. Can you do such thing?

Bat

Banchan found a bat in his garage.

A hook like thumb is visible on the right..

It came in to his garage because we kept the door open for a long time yesterday.

It’s food on the left, and the thumb is on the right.

I have no knowledge of bat anatomy, so I studied a little. This site shows a simple and easy to understand diagram.

The triangular shape is the tail with wing membrane.

It was stuck in our hot garage because the door was closed for the night. So we opened the door, and it flew away quickly into a night sky.

A Place To Have Babies

A view from a hike this morning.

Hello! It’s still hot but rather pleasant in the early morning these days.

Today’s topic is about “Surrendering to the flow of nature.”

Eleven Gambel’s quail chicks were born in our backyard this year. We were so excited and we watched over them for their safety, but only one survived to fledge. Is this the real nature’s way? To tell the truth, I feel a bit guilty because we kept chicks in the backyard. We thought it’s safe for them, but it could be like a double-edged sword.

We provided food and water, and a space surrounded by a fence. I thought they were safe in there but, at the same time, they couldn’t run away from intruders like a bobcat. But even the bobcat cub could jump over the fence.

It must be so hard for a quail mom to find a safe place to lay her eggs. By the way, I didn’t know where the nest was until now.

So I looked for it…

And I found it.

The shells were deep in the boxwood by the living-room.

・・・フーム・・・どうしよう・・・ …. hmmm … what can I do …

My conclusion after thinking for a while was this: It’s best that Quail chicks grow up in the natural environment.

Well then, I cut the boxwood like a poodle’s continental cut. It’s much easier than removing the fence. With this, quails can’t make nests in there.

Quail mom, please find an ideal place for your next batch, outside of our backyard next year.

Roger’s Visit

It’s been so hot these days with high temperatures about 115F. While we were out last evening, our Ring video camera captured a surprise visitor in the backyard.

It’s Roger the roadrunner. Since he ate a baby quail, we chased him away a few times to protect the babies. Of course, Roger needs to hunt for living. We know that very well, but we were emotionally attached to the quail babies. Maybe because of that, we didn’t see him since then. So, I am happy to see him again like seeing old friend.

By the way, I’ve learned that roadrunners cry several different ways. But we have heard only one when we see them. It’s very difficult to describe the voice, but luckily the video captured his voice. Please see the video below.

Male Cone

The altitude of Cedar Breaks National Monument is same with Mount Kitadake, the second highest mountain in Japan (10,475ft). No wonder Bristlecone Pine Trees can live there.

We hiked on Rattlesnake trail from the trailhead on UH-148 for about a little over mile, and found Bristlecone Pine trees there as well.

Banchan with his favorite tree, Bristlecone Pine’s roots.

And many, many male cones were there.

I looked for female cones, but couldn’t find any. There should be at least a few since it takes two years to be fully grown.

When I visited White Mountain (14,252ft) in California, where the oldest Bristlecone Pine tree in the world is located, I found many female cones. Is it because it’s much colder there?

Female flower at White Mountain, CA

I assume the male cones will scatter pollen towards summer and the female cones will be pollinated. I want to see some female cones when I visit there next time.

The beautiful Cedar Breaks National Monument has just started its short summer season.

Alpine Plants

It’s been over 110F these days in St. George. So we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument to enjoy the cool air.

Southern Ligusticum

It was slightly past peak for the wildflowers at Cedar Breaks NM, but the remaining open field full of wildflowers refreshed my soul.

Markagunt Penstemon

New flowers from this trip:

I don’t know why, but wildflowers gently wrapped me like a blanket, and warmed my soul.
