Training

We started puppy training in mid-May. Maple was just turning four months old.

After that, we began the full-scale training program following the puppy training. It took quite a while to complete, partly because of Maple’s spaying and the summer holidays, but today we finally finished the last one-on-one lesson.

From now on, the long-awaited group lessons will begin. To prepare for this, Willow, the trainer’s dog, joined us for today’s lesson.

He’s only two years old, but naturally, as he’s been well-trained, he remained calm even while Maple was getting a bit overexcited.

As she loved following Willow’s lead and copying her, group lessons are sure to be a great experience for Maple.

New Look

A lot has happened, so it’s been a busy week.

When you think of autumn, chrysanthemums are a classic choice. Ahead of starting a project to create a new path in a corner of the backyard garden, I decided to plant some chrysanthemums there. It looks rather nice.

However, Maple—who is always curious about anything new—had been sneaking off to eat chrysanthemum leaves whenever I wasn’t looking. I have no idea how much she ate. That evening, she refused her dinner and kept going outside in the middle of the night to go potty. It was clearly a sign that something was wrong. It was only then that it occurred to me, ‘Could the chrysanthemums be the cause?’, and when I looked it up, I discovered they were indeed poisonous plants. Fortunately, she had recovered by the second day, so there was no need to take her to the vet.

The next thing that happened was a change to my daily morning walk with Maple. When I’m busy, it’s a walk of about 30 minutes to the clubhouse and back. The scenery at the golf course in the early morning is refreshing.

However, as there was a tournament this week, twice as many golfers as usual had turned up at the clubhouse early in the morning, so it seemed rather busy. Maple looked delighted to be receiving even more attention than usual by golfers.

Another major event was helping out at Ban-chan’s booth at the art festival.

As this was Maple’s first time, I was worried about whether she’d behave herself in a place where there were lots of people and dogs. Still, I’d say she scored about 80 out of 100.

Well, the last thing that happened was Maple’s grooming session. This time, I took the plunge and tried a new style, and she ended up looking like a completely different dog.

I really like it. Just as everyone else has been saying, there was a double rainbow in the sky that evening after the rain had stopped.

Her new style is where the body is left with a thick coat in preparation for winter, while the face is shaved clean in contrast, much like a poodle. What do you think?

Aspen in the Rain

We went out towards Navajo Lake to see if the Aspen trees had started to change color.

I spotted Aspen trees turning yellow beyond the flock of sheep. Changes in the color of the trees announce the changing of the seasons.

Unfortunately, it was raining, so we could only admire the yellowing aspen trees from inside the car.

It’s the sort of path I’d definitely want to walk along if the weather were fine.

This was Maple, who patiently stayed in my arms while I was taking photos.

“Maple, Aspen are my favorite trees.”

“Why?”

“Because every time the wind blows, the tiny leaves flutter in the breeze, just like fairies dancing.”

”Wow, look at that. There’s a rainbow in the sky. You can often see rainbows after it has rained.”

“Why?” said Maple.

“Well, it’s because the sunlight hits the raindrops, and the light that’s reflected from them appears in the colors of the rainbow.”

“Hmm, but raindrops aren’t colored, are they?”

“That’s true. However, it’s rather strange, but they say that when light enters a water droplet and is reflected, it is broken down into colors ranging from purple to red.”

“Is that so? I wonder if there’s any yellow in a rainbow?”

“Of course it’s in there.”

“Well then, are the yellow leaves in Aspen part of the rainbow too?”

“Maple, that’s a tricky question. But, for now, I’ll just say it isn’t part of the rainbow. The relationship between light and color is a bit complicated, so we’ll talk about it next time,” I replied, though I thought to myself that I’d probably never be able to answer her questions properly.

As it was Maple’s first time experiencing rain, she must have found plenty of things rather strange that day.

Aspen, in the rain, has a gentle, tranquil atmosphere.
