ダンスのレッスンで外出していました。7時ごろ帰宅すると、バンちゃんが興奮していました。ボブキャットのボビーとお母さんが午後6時20分ごろ裏庭に来ていたからです。彼が発見した時、ボビーは飛び回って遊んでいたそうです。I was out for my dance lesson. When I came back home around 7:00pm, Banchan was so excited and showed me his video. Bobby the bobcat cub and his mom were there in our backyard around 6:20pm. Bobby was so joyfully, playing around there when Banchan found them there.
あまりのショックにバンちゃんの方が凍りついていたようですが、ようやくiPadが近くにある事に気がついて、立ち去る前のひと時をビデオに収めたとのことです。Banchan told me that he was so dumbfounded because it was such an unexpected sight, that he couldn’t move. He finally realized that his iPad was near-by, so he took some video before they left.
前日早朝4時ごろ、セキュリティーカメラにも2匹の姿が映っていました。 夜明けごろは結構出没しているらしいですが、日が沈む前のご訪問は珍しい。In the meantime, our security camera also captured their figures around 4:00am. It seems that they are active before dawn, but it’s rare for them to visit our backyard before sunset.
早速、セキュリティーカメラとバンちゃんの映像をもらって編集してみました。ボビーとお母さんの愛情あふれる生活を垣間見たようで、ちょっとウルっとしてしまいました。I immediately got five videos from Banchan as well as the security camera, edited them, and made a short video. I was deeply moved by my own video because I could see their lives full of love through the video.
ほんの1秒でも未来を予知できたら、私の生活はどんな風に変わるんだろう。How could it change my life if I can predict the future even by only one second?
昨日、バンちゃんが購入した未来予知探査機が届いた。A gadget that Banchan had ordered a while back arrived yesterday. It can predict the future!
勿論、正確には未来を予知できる機会なんてまだ存在しません。この製品は、人間の目にはまだ見えない稲光から出る赤外線を素早く察知してくれるだけです。ただ、特記したいのは、光り始めを察知した後、即、自動的にカメラのシャッターを動作してくれる機能を持っていることです。優れ物だ。Of course, no such device like this actually exists. It senses an infrared flash from a lightning bolt that precedes the visible flash. The great feature of the gadget is that once it catches the infrared signal, it triggers the camera shutter so that you can get a lightning shot effortlessly.
早速、そんな優れ物の試行運転をしに、天気予報のレーダーが示す雨、雷予報を見ながらアリゾナ州に行って来ました。To test drive such a great gadget, we traveled south to Arizona because the weather radar was showing activity in that area.
来る来る。南から吹く風に乗って雨雲がやってくるのが見えます。Yes, it was a perfect place. We could see many thick clouds coming towards us from the south.
あたりがだんだん暗くなってきて、雷の音もだんだん大きくなってきました。As the clouds came closer to us, the sound of thunder was getting louder and the sky was getting darker.
もうこの時点で探知機を付けたバンちゃんのカメラは5回ぐらい稲妻を捉えていました。Banchan’s camera with the gadget attached had already captured about 5 lightning shots.
一方、探知機なしの私は、1秒ごとにシャッターを自分で押し続けた結果、1000ショット以上という莫大な量の写真が残りましたが、肝心の稲妻は・・・ On the other hand, my camera with no gadget had over 1000 shots because I kept pressing the shutter button every half second. … but have I captured any lightning?
稲妻を捉えた奇跡のワンショット。This is the one and only shot that captured a lightning bolt.
全滅だと思っていたのに撮れてた一枚。小さな稲妻だけど辛抱強く待った甲斐があっての一枚なので、嬉しさひとしおです。I thought I didn’t get any, so I was delighted when I found this tiny lightning image.
そう、一枚撮れるんなら私は未来を予知しなくても十分幸せなんです。Now I understood what it means. I am happy without any great gadget as long as I can get one good shot.
モンスーンの季節がやって来たらしい。 I was told that the monsoon season has started. This is our first experience since we moved to this area.
大雨注意報、鉄砲水警報などが時々携帯に入ってきます。とは言え、今のところ激しい雨が一度降っただけで、ほとんどポツリポツリ程度です。No wonder we had “Flash-flood warning” or “Heavy rain warning” sent to our cell phones often. However, we have had only one heavy rain and a few scattered showers so far.
ともあれ、私たちは自然が見せてくれる色々な顔をただただ楽しんでる。今日の夕暮れの空。入道雲が遠くに見えて裏庭から見える空が豪快になった。In any case, we simply enjoy the different faces of mother nature. I can see a thunderstorm far away on the horizon. She showed us such a grand sky today.
最近バンちゃんは雷を撮ることにハマっています。で、私もついでにストームチェイサーに参加しました。Banchan is into Lightning Photography these days. So I joined him and became a storm chaser.
そしてこれが私のデビューショット。And this is my debut shot.
479回シャッターを押して、この一枚だけ辛うじて雷を捉える事ができた貴重なショット。I pushed the camera’s shutter button 479 times, and this is the only shot that captured lightning.
ピカッと光る10分の1秒前にはシャッターボタンを押していないと撮れない。つまり、未来を予測することに等しい。そんな事、できる？ To capture any lightning, you have to start pushing the shutter button one tenth of second before it lit the sky. In other words, you need to predict the future. Can you do such thing?
三角形の部分に翼膜と共に尻尾があります。The triangular shape is the tail with wing membrane.
多分、ガレージに入って来たものの、バンちゃんがドアを閉めてしまったので閉じ込められてしまったのかもしれません。ドアを開けたらパタパタと夜の空に飛び去っていきました。It was stuck in our hot garage because the door was closed for the night. So we opened the door, and it flew away quickly into a night sky.
こんにちは！暑くても、早朝なら気持ちがいい。そんなこの頃です。Hello! It’s still hot but rather pleasant in the early morning these days.
さて、今日の話題は「自然の流れに従おう」という事です。Today’s topic is about “Surrendering to the flow of nature.”
今年は、裏庭でズアカカンムリウズラの赤ちゃん達が11羽産まれました。私たちはワクワクしながら成長過程を見守りましたが、結果として、最終的に1羽になってしまいました。これが自然界の現実なんでしょうか。少し罪悪感を抱いてます。裏庭はウズラ達にとって安全そうで、実は双刃の剣だったんじゃないかって思うんです。Eleven Gambel’s quail chicks were born in our backyard this year. We were so excited and we watched over them for their safety, but only one survived to fledge. Is this the real nature’s way? To tell the truth, I feel a bit guilty because we kept chicks in the backyard. We thought it’s safe for them, but it could be like a double-edged sword.
なぜなら、水と食べ物がすぐそばにあるけれど、塀という安全そうな囲いのお陰で逃げたい時に逃げられない。4本足の動物からは身を守れそうだけど、実はボブキャットなんか簡単に入ってこられる。We provided food and water, and a space surrounded by a fence. I thought they were safe in there but, at the same time, they couldn’t run away from intruders like a bobcat. But even the bobcat cub could jump over the fence.
ウズラのお母さん、出産場所選びは大変ですね。ちなみに、私はまだウズラ達の産まれた巣が何処なのか知りませんでした。裏庭のどこ？ It must be so hard for a quail mom to find a safe place to lay her eggs. By the way, I didn’t know where the nest was until now.
そこで、うずらの巣を探してみると、So I looked for it…
あった！ And I found it.
リビングルームの窓のすぐ側のボックスウッドの中にありました。The shells were deep in the boxwood by the living-room.
・・・フーム・・・どうしよう・・・ …. hmmm … what can I do …
やっぱり、ウズラは自然の中で育つ方がいい。私の出した結論です。 My conclusion after thinking for a while was this: It’s best that Quail chicks grow up in the natural environment.
ならば後は行動あるのみ。まさか塀を取り除く事はできないので、ボックスウッドをプードルのコンチネンタルカット風にしてしまいました。これでこの低木の中に巣を作る事はできなくなったと思います。 Well then, I cut the boxwood like a poodle’s continental cut. It’s much easier than removing the fence. With this, quails can’t make nests in there.
ウズラのお母さん、来年はどうぞ別の場所で強く逞しい子供を育てていってくださいね。Quail mom, please find an ideal place for your next batch, outside of our backyard next year.
45度の暑い日が続きます。昨日の夕刻、私たちが出かけている間にセキュリティーカメラが珍しいお客様を撮影してくれました。 It’s been so hot these days with high temperatures about 115F. While we were out last evening, our Ring video camera captured a surprise visitor in the backyard.
ロードランナーのロジャーです。彼がウズラの子供を食べてしまったところを目撃してから、私たちも用心して子供達を保護していました。勿論、ロジャーだって生きるのに精一杯なのだから、一方的にウズラの見方をするのはいけないのはわかっているんですが、感情移入してしまいました。ともあれ、その後、ロジャーの姿をみる事はありませんでした。だから、今回の彼の訪問は嬉しい。It’s Roger the roadrunner. Since he ate a baby quail, we chased him away a few times to protect the babies. Of course, Roger needs to hunt for living. We know that very well, but we were emotionally attached to the quail babies. Maybe because of that, we didn’t see him since then. So, I am happy to see him again like seeing old friend.
ところで、ロードランナーの鳴き声は数種類あるそうです。でも、私たちが目撃する時は、決まって不思議な何とも形容し難い鳴き声です。ちょうどビデオに録音されていたので、ラッキーです。どうぞ、お聞きください。By the way, I’ve learned that roadrunners cry several different ways. But we have heard only one when we see them. It’s very difficult to describe the voice, but luckily the video captured his voice. Please see the video below.
UH-148からラトルスネークの山道を歩いていくと、そこにもイガ五葉松が群生していました。 We hiked on Rattlesnake trail from the trailhead on UH-148 for about a little over mile, and found Bristlecone Pine trees there as well.

そして、夥しいほどの雄花が枝の先についていました。And many, many male cones were there.
雌花は何処だろうと探しましたが、見つけられません。2年もかけて松笠に成長するんだから、ひとつぐら見つけられそうなものなのに。I looked for female cones, but couldn’t find any. There should be at least a few since it takes two years to be fully grown.
カリフォルニア州のホワイトマウンテン (4,300m) は世界最古のイガ五葉松が生息していることで有名です。そこを訪れたときには雌花を沢山見つける事ができました。When I visited White Mountain (14,252ft) in California, where the oldest Bristlecone Pine tree in the world is located, I found many female cones. Is it because it’s much colder there?

これから夏にかけて雄花は花粉を撒き散らし、雌花に受粉されるのでしょう。今度来る時には、群青色の硬い雌花を見てみたいです。I assume the male cones will scatter pollen towards summer and the female cones will be pollinated. I want to see some female cones when I visit there next time.
セイントジョージでは摂氏43度を超える暑さが続いてます。そこでシーダーブレイク国定公園に涼みに出かけました。It’s been over 110F these days in St. George. So we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument to enjoy the cool air.

すでにピークは過ぎているものの、野生の花が広がる高原は清々しかったです。It was slightly past peak for the wildflowers at Cedar Breaks NM, but the remaining open field full of wildflowers refreshed my soul.

何故でしょうか。野草は私を優しく包んで心を暖かくしてくれました。I don’t know why, but wildflowers gently wrapped me like a blanket, and warmed my soul.
昨日は早朝から刺激的でしたが、それも午後には治ったので出かけていました。ところがセキュリティーカメラがやたらと騒がしい。 It was such an exciting day from early morning. In the later afternoon, we could finally relax, and so we went out. But our backyard security camera sent us so many notices to my cell phone.
ボブキャットが映っていたんです。どうやら、子供のボビィが木から降りた後、お母さんと再会しなかった様です。お母さんが行ったり来たり、裏庭中を探し回っている様子がよくわかります。To our surprise, a bobcat was on the video. It must be Bobby’s mom. From the way she acted, it was clear Bobby didn’t find her after he came down from the tree. And she couldn’t find Bobby either. We can see how mom was worrying about Bobby and looked for him everywhere in the backyard.
そんな〜！ No way!
まだ3−4ヶ月のボビィ。それにこの暑さ。レスキュー部隊のお兄さんが、お母さんに会えなかったら生き残れる可能性はないと言われました。 He is still only 3-4 months old. The weather is so hot that it could be difficult to live through. The rescue ranger said that there is only a very slim chance for him to survive if he couldn’t rejoin his mom.
でも、最後のビデオを見て安堵しました。お母さんと一緒に歩いているところが写っていたからです。ボビィは好奇心旺盛でいろいろな所に行ってしまうようですね。どうぞご覧ください。But we were relieved when we saw the last video. He was walking along with his mother. It seems that Bobby’s curiosity takes him everywhere without telling his mom. Please view the video.

お母さんは喉が渇いていたらしく、延々と1分40秒も水を飲み続けた。Bobby’s mom was so thirsty that she kept drinking water for 1 minute 40 seconds.

夜明け前、ドスドスっという音で目が覚めた。いつもは開けてあるシェイドを開けてみると、ボブキャットの子供が窓のすぐ外をウロウロしていた。Thump Thump, the sound came from right outside our bedroom and woke me up. I raised the shades on the windows, and there I found a Bobcat cub going back and forth less than two feet away from me.
お母さんは朝ごはんのウサギを咥えていた。「カメラ〜！」と叫んでいる間にさっさと塀を飛び越えて行ってしまった。The cub’s mother had a rabbit in her mouth for their breakfast. It was so unexpected, that I shouted “Camera, Lenses~!” Of course, that’s exactly I shouldn’t have done. While I was running around like a crazy person, they hopped onto the backyard fence, and disappeared.
が、話はここで終わらない。 But, the story didn’t end there!
バスルームの窓の外、なんと、お母さんがまだウロウロしていた。という事は、子供がまだいるはず！Right outside of the bathroom window, the mother was still there with a concerned face. Does this mean what we hope? The cub should still be there.

もしかして、また裏庭に入ってくるのかな？ Is she coming into the backyard again?
と、思ったら、木の上を見てる。But then, she is looking up into the tree.
という事は、子供は木の上？ Does this mean that the cub is on the tree somewhere? But where?
いた！勝手にボビィと命名した。Found him! I named him as Bobby then.
なんとまあ、夜明け前からこの騒動。もう、太陽の光が山上方をてらし始めてる。This all happened before dawn. Now the sunrise began and a strong sun started to illuminate the red rock hill.
お母さん、どうする？ボビィは木から降りられなくなったらしい。もう2時間も経ってるよ。What do you do, Bobby’s mom? It seems that Bobby can’t come down from the tree. It’s been two hours since he first climbed up.
窓の中から見ていた私たちですが、だんだん疲れてきたボビィの様子に、何とかしないとまずいと思い立つ。で、外に出てみることにしたら前庭でお母さんと出くわしてしまった。Bobby looked so tired. Shouldn’t we do something to rescue Bobby? We observed all these movements from inside windows but we decided to go out. But then, we encountered his mom right there at the front yard.
まずい！お母さんは一瞬も目を離さず私を凝視している。この距離、まずい！Oh no… She was staring at me without blinking. This doesn’t look good.
ソロリソロリと歩いて家の中に逃げ込んだ。さらに1時間が経過。状況に変化なし。バンちゃんは勇敢にも長い板を梯子の上に乗せて木に繋いだ。ボビィ、これで降りやすくなったかな？ Ever so slowly, and quietly, I returned to the house to take refuge. Banchan was so brave then. He carried out a ladder and wooden long board and set up a slope near the branch where Bobby was sitting. We hoped this will help Bobby to go down easily.
それでも何の進展もなっく4時間も経過したので、ユタ州の野生保護課に助けを求めることにした。こちらに向かっているレスキュー部隊と電話で話しているまさにその最中、「一人で降りて茂みの中に走って行ったよ！」というバンちゃんの声。Still, the situation didn’t change for four hours. I finally decided to call Utah’s Wildlife Rescue Division. I explained all the details to the person who was driving over to our house. But then, Banchan shouted, “the cub is down by himself!” while I was talking to the rescue person.
ボビィの足。やっぱり猫みたいにフカフカ。Bobby’s foot. It looks soft like a cat’s foot.
慌てて再確認をするために木の上を見に行ったらもうボビィはいなかった。I ran to the bathroom window and looked at the tree. And I found nothing there. Bobby had gone.
木の上から落ちそうになった時。小さい爪がフカフカの足から見えてる。これで必死に落ちるのを防いだのね。A shot when Bobby nearly fell down from the tree. Can you see his tiny claws? He held on to the tree so hard with those claws.
ボビィは木の上から降りられなくなったのか。それとも休憩してただけなのか。答えはボビィとお母さんだけが知っている。Here is a question. Was he in trouble and he really couldn’t come down, or was he simply resting there on the tree branches? No one knows the answer to this question but Bobby and his mother.
そんな早朝のサファリだった。It was a great safari adventure early in the morning.
こんなに小さいんだから、まだだよね。It can’t be yet, because they are still so little.
でも、もう、飛べるのかな。But they could fly soon.
2-3日前まで、こんな風にみんなで朝の散歩をしてたのに。It was their daily routine to have a walk like this together till a few days ago.
別れは突然です。最後まで残っていたズアカカンムリウズラのヒナはお父さんと一緒に塀に飛び乗り、巣立っていってしまいました。But the departure came suddenly. The last Gambel’s quail chick went up the fence together with his dad and fledged.
裏庭が急に静かになりました。Our backyard suddenly became so quiet.
