シーダーブレイクス国定公園は、日本で2番目に高い北岳の標高と同じ 3,190mです。だからイガ五葉松も生息できるんですね。 The altitude of Cedar Breaks National Monument is same with Mount Kitadake, the second highest mountain in Japan (10,475ft). No wonder Bristlecone Pine Trees can live there.

UH-148からラトルスネークの山道を歩いていくと、そこにもイガ五葉松が群生していました。 We hiked on Rattlesnake trail from the trailhead on UH-148 for about a little over mile, and found Bristlecone Pine trees there as well.

そして、夥しいほどの雄花が枝の先についていました。And many, many male cones were there.

雌花は何処だろうと探しましたが、見つけられません。2年もかけて松笠に成長するんだから、ひとつぐら見つけられそうなものなのに。I looked for female cones, but couldn’t find any. There should be at least a few since it takes two years to be fully grown.

カリフォルニア州のホワイトマウンテン (4,300m) は世界最古のイガ五葉松が生息していることで有名です。そこを訪れたときには雌花を沢山見つける事ができました。When I visited White Mountain (14,252ft) in California, where the oldest Bristlecone Pine tree in the world is located, I found many female cones. Is it because it’s much colder there?

これから夏にかけて雄花は花粉を撒き散らし、雌花に受粉されるのでしょう。今度来る時には、群青色の硬い雌花を見てみたいです。I assume the male cones will scatter pollen towards summer and the female cones will be pollinated. I want to see some female cones when I visit there next time.

美しいシーダーブレイクス国定公園は、短い夏を迎えたばかりです。The beautiful Cedar Breaks National Monument has just started its short summer season.
