On the second day of the Bird Festival, we went to Lytle Ranch. It was a very windy day and I needed to give up after the first 30 minutes or so unfortunately due to my hay fever problem.
It was a difficult day to breathe and keep my eyes open, not to mention the cottonwood pollen. It is as beautiful as snow in this way.
It was as beautiful as snow in this way, but I definitely want to avoid it.
The ranch’s geographic location and history are both very unique and interesting.
See these links for more information.
Now, back to the birds. I only took about 1,000 pictures that day because I gave up halfway through the birdwalk.
It’s too far away and the quality is poor, but this is a Phainopepla. I would definitely like to come back here again to take more pictures of this bird.
And here is another poor quality photo of a bird that I have never seen before, a Lazuli Bunting. How beautiful!
This bird is a migratory bird. I wonder how long they will stay here. By all means, I must take much better pictures of this bird!
On the first day of the Red Cliffs Audubon Bird Festival, we saw many birds in the Pine Valley Mountains and took 3,000 photos. Here, I want to share with you 15 photos.
Yellow Warbler
And the highlight of the day was the presence of the following two species of birds. They made my heart pound and made me press the shutter like crazy.
This is a Green-tailed Towhee. I have seen this bird in the past, but have not been able to get good shots of it.
But on this day, it came quite close to me..
It has an orange head and olive-colored wings and tail.
I had a hard time focusing on it because it was quick to hide in the bushes. But with these shots, I can check off this bird from my photo list.
And one more bird.
A female bluebird is peeking out of a hole in a tree. Is she borrowing from a hole made by a woodpecker?
Recently, they have been using nest boxes made by humans, as shown in the following photos, and this is the first time we have seen a bluebird nest in such a natural environment.
I am wondering if they have already laid eggs or if they are just getting started. It is worth bringing a tripod and coming here at least one more time to observe. I have more to look forward to in the next month or so.
The craggy rocky mountains that you are sure to see on your way to Zion National Park are known as Eagle Crags.
The hiking distance was 5.85 km and the elevation gain was 1,200 feet. We climbed up rugged, rocky terrain.
We took a break at a place with a view of the rocky looking mountains of Zion National Park.
The hike leader explained to us about the increasingly rugged path from then on.
In the end, we climbed up to the foot of this rock and turned around, because from this point onward, it would be a difficult rock climb needing ropes.
It was so hot that one would think it was already summer. The wildflowers looked happy.
Grafton is a ghost town where no one lives anymore.
It is now an historic site and is maintained well.
We came here to see birds. Many small bird were busy looking for breakfast in the distance.
Bewick’s Wren
But I had only one goal. To capture a Vermilion Flycatcher on my camera.
I was able to capture it once last time, but it was perched on a barbed wire, so I wanted to capture it in its natural habitat somehow.
But it was too far away, and also taking pictures with a heavy 400mm lens without a tripod was quite a difficult task for me. Finally, I was able to take this photo of an first-year Vermilion Flycatcher. It is holding something in its beak.
This was where my paparazzi began. It was near a cow eating delicious wild grass. That means there are a lot of flies. The conditions for the location were great.
It is hard to tell just by listening to the Japanese name of this bird, but the English name of this bird means “a bird that catches flies.” So that is exactly what it was doing. Here are a series of shots, eating the fly afterwards. It is small, so I hope you can understand.
And here is the best shot of the day for me.
It has been some time since my last post. There were so many things going on that I am not sure where to start. For now, let me introduce you to the Screech Owl.
The Bird Fest by Red Cliffs Audubon club just ended, and I took these pictures on the first day out of three days. We walked around for three hours from 9 pm till midnight patiently. It was well worth it because I could see the Screech Owl.
We left there soon after we took these pictures as we thought we should leave him alone for his dinner.
We came back home after 1am, so I was very tired. But at the same time, I was very excited to see this kind of owl for the first time and the result of his hunt.
We left home at 5:30 am, and returned home at 7:30 pm. This hike, in the east side of Zion National Park, is a total of 10.5 miles, 2,300 feet elevation gain, and 10 hours of hiking.

It was probably the hardest hike of my hiking history.
However, the views were breathtaking.
There were two main reasons why this hike turned out to be more difficult than expected. The first was that there was still snow on the ground.
Second, it had been raining, so water was flowing out from the rocks, and by extension, usually dry washes, were flowing rivers.
We had the baptism of crossing a river with no bridge, and walked through the wash trying to avoid being swallowed by quicksand. I lost a lot of nerve here. The person in the photo below sank quickly above his knees.
It was extremely crowded in Zion because of Easter Vacation, but our hike was on a trail-less route, so of course we saw no one but us from the time we got out of the car until we returned.
We climbed the steep rocky terrain using each other’s legs to hold onto and sometimes getting a helping hand to push our butts up.
On the descent, we often slid down on our butts.
Water was flowing out of the crevices of the rocks, making the rock face slippery. And in fact, one of our group members slipped and fell. In doing so, she dislocated her shoulder and was taken down the mountain to the hospital by a couple of our hikers.
While our hike leader was having fun throwing snowballs, I made a little snowman for myself.
The top of Parunuweap is about 6,200 feet. So it is not that high. Even so, survival for the plants plants living on the summit must be very hard.
In the photo below, both temples fit together, with the West Temple on the left and the East Temple on the right.
Looking down from the top of the cliff, I saw the Virgin River flowing in what looked like a thin stream. far below.
Water that had accumulated in a pool at the top, will disappear once it gets hot.
Now that we’ve had enough of relaxing at the top (though usually less than 10 minutes), we will now descend beyond the lower white-headed hoodoo forest in the photo below.
Wherever you go here, the forms created by nature are beautiful.
We were humbled to walk in such beauty.
I dropped my phone several times and once it rolled down about 50 feet and I thought it was done for. My cell phone was somehow safe, but after this picture, the battery ran out.
Lastly, I would like to write about Zion’s Moqui Balls. They are big. The moqui balls near my house are about this big.
But Zion’s Moqui Balls are so much bigger.
About the same size as my face. Nature in Zion is huge!
It snowed again today. I had just planted flowers the day before yesterday for the summer.
I moved the flowers that could be moved to a place under the roof. But those that could not be moved, I had no choice, I can only hope that they will be safe.
This snow was a mix of hail and snow. It melts quickly though. The weather forecast for the next 10 days is sunny or cloudy, and the temperature is supposed to rise.
What a way to end the winter! Now, let’s go with clear skies from now on!
Yesterday was clear, but today the sky is once again covered with clouds, strong winds are blowing, and it is cold!
But, indeed, I know it’s already spring.
Last week, we went to see a falcon although there were snow flurries in the air. We couldn’t see them with the naked eyes, but when I pointed my telephoto lens in the direction where they were crying loudly, there they were. I was barely able to capture what appeared to be a falcon. It was far, far away on the cliff.
Two Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were busily pecking at an old tree.
Here is a familiar face, a Scrub Jay. It looks cold.
—
But yesterday was a beautifully sunny day. A squirrel came out to enjoy the sun.
Here, Mr. Scrub Jay is rummaging around in the ground, looking for something.
“Excuse me, what are you looking for?”
“It’s April already, but I haven’t done anything yet, so I am so busy.”
“What are you getting ready for?”
“Don’t you think it’s obvious? It’s nest material to lay our eggs!”
Hearing this, we also rushed to the nursery, and bought new flowers and trees. I have chosen plants that birds, butterflies and bees would love.
Among them, the following tree is the first trial this year. See the pictures on this website.(https://www.monrovia.com/royal-red-butterfly-bush.html)私の背丈より高く成長するそうです。 They say it will grow taller than I am.
As it’s still small and not yet flowering, I planted marigolds in front of it.
It fits by the gate of the courtyard.
In any case, gosh! it’s so cold. It went back to a cold day today. Is this a phenomenon like the “3 days cold and 4 days warm” in Japan?
Being so happy to see sunshine after a long time, we went to Snow Canyon State Park yesterday afternoon.
I was a little tired after walking 8.3 km carrying two heavy lenses weighing more than 2 kg, but there was something that made me so happy that it blew away my fatigue.
The reason for this is that I was able to see Canyon Wrens.
When I visited Lees Ferry along the Colorado River, I spotted one and chased it, but it started raining and I was unable to get a good quality photo.
Aren’t they cute? They are my favorite birds at the moment.
But it is a small bird, measuring only about 7 inches with its wings spread, and weighing only 0.5oz. It is extremely difficult to spot.
But for such a small bird, its cry is very loud and echoed through the canyon. We walked toward the voice with the call as our guide and waited patiently, staring at the rock wall where it was about to fly to.
After beautiful singing and chirping, they flew away toward the higher rock walls.
This is a view I saw on the way back home from a haircut. It’s been a long time since seeing such a nice view as the rainy days continued.
Many people said that it’s very unusual in this region for the rains to continue until the end of March.
MV Rock looks happy with the Pine Valley Mountains behind him.
Let me see… what shall I do this afternoon?
Snow Canyon State Park is one of my favorite places. We climbed the highest point of the White Rocks called which we called “Top of the World” on the day of the hike.
It had been raining so hard the past few days that there were puddles of water everywhere.
We walked carefully and cautiously over Navajo sandstone that looked like the shell of a giant turtle, and gained altitude rather quickly.
The summit we were aiming for was now in sight.
Before the final climb, the view was already great.
Photo credit: Jim, the hike leader. I am at the very right.
We were especially careful on the final rocky area.
This is the view from the top.
It was so narrow at the top that it was scary to stand on for me, but Jim, the hike leader, is a rock climber, so he walked like a mountain goat.
When we got back to level ground, I looked up at the Top of the World Rock. I said, “You did great!” praising myself.
The distance was only about 3.7 miles, but it took a long time because we walked carefully step by step.
It was a nice hike after the rain.
This is a virtual hike with a treadmill. Why not?!
The treadmill program I use lets me walk the Fujinomiya route, which is 4.3 km divided into 7 parts, each part lasting about 20 to 25 minutes.
I forgot to take a picture of the start screen of part 1, so here is the result screen instead.
Since it was the beginning of the walk, the uphill was gentle and I was a bit disappointed. So I changed to a faster speed.
Screen shot of the start of part 2.
In part 2, the gradient suddenly spiked to 30%, making it a bit dangerous to walk on the treadmill. This is the nice thing about virtual, you can change the gradient yourself, from 20% to 10%, and towards the end I was walking at about 8%.
Part 3.
I gained a lot of virtual altitude in part 3. This is actually the case for parts 2 to the end.
What I found out is that since the time is constant, increasing the speed will not get you there faster, it will only increase the distance. So it is better to keep both speed and gradient as programmed.
Most people climb the Fujinomiya route from the fifth station to the top, a distance of 4.3 km, in about 4-5 hours. The altitude ranges from 2,400 to 3,776 meters, so it is not possible for a normal person to walk fast.
More than 20 years ago, my son and I hiked to the top. I don’t think it was this route, but we both got altitude sickness and suffered until we descended.
—
Second day. I walked the remaining parts 4 to 7 and successfully made it to the top. Grin.
Part 4.
I gained altitude again in this part, but walked without changing the default gradient on the treadmill this day.
With a slope of 30%, it is enough to make you sweat a lot.
Perhaps because I was getting quite tired, I forgot to take a picture of the start screen for part 6.
Since I was near the crater at the summit, there was not much more climbing to do up here.
As I was walking up the steep 30% grade, someone asked me, “Are you aiming for Mount Everest?”
Thank you for the idea. Next time I can try for Everest!
On rainy days, it’s fun to do a virtual hike.
