There are a surprisingly large number of flightless birds. For example, penguins, ostriches, and chickens. The theory seems to be that they evolved and became flightless due to their various environments and the specific niche they occupy in the web of life.
There are birds that can fly but do not fly. This “flightless bird” visits our house quite often. He is a roadrunner and we named him Roger.

He is not flightless, but he doesn’t fly so often because he doesn’t need to. In the distant future, he may evolve and become a “flightless bird”.
The reason he does not need to fly is that he can run so fast; he has been recorded to run at speeds of up to 27 mph, making it the fastest bird on earth.
Roger is an omnivore, but is often seen preying on lizards, frogs, and insects. All of today’s photos show him trying to catch a sphinx caterpillar.

Do you see the caterpillar? It is right above Roger. It looks just like a leaf, so you wouldn’t normally notice it.

The video is a bit cruel, but it shows Roger banging the caterpillar on a rock until it stops moving after capture. Witnessing this kind of behavior makes me feel like I’ve seen a little bit of the animal kingdom in our backyard.

I’m busy with over 30,000 photo images. The reason for this will be explained later.

Today I will share with you 3 out of 30,000 images.
Around the beginning of June, we came across Desert tortoises. There were a whopping 20 or so of them, ranging from young tortoises to those that were reasonably mature. It was like hitting the jackpot of the tortoise habitat area.

Among them, this tortoise was looking out from its burrow.

We were just looking for tortoise burrows and this was a rare encounter.
The past couple months have been full of interesting things. I will introduce some of them tomorrow.
I finished the 5K race in 32:33. In my age group, I was first again, as I was last year. I was also able to fulfill my goal of breaking my record by shaving 4 minutes off my time.

Last year was my first time running long distances and I just ran. Compared to that, I think this year’s race was the result of a well-developed physical fitness and training program. Additionally, I gained experience running at an altitude of 8,000ft, to train for the higher elevation the race was at.

The day before the race, I stayed at an inn near the race site.

The decor of the B&B was very interesting, a mix of Southern American style and Rococo style.

After the race, the food served at the B&B was delicious. They served us even though it was already past their normal breakfast time. I really felt that my efforts had not betrayed me. My hard work really payed off!

Lastly, I would like to thank Banchan for his support and encouragement.
The race day is only three days away.
What should I do? I bought a book of trainer recommendations.

If it were a book in Japanese, I could read it in about two days, but since it is in English, I don’t know if I will finish it by the end of the third day. It has the feel of Taoist philosophical thinking applied to sports.
Last weekend I ran at a place that was over 8,000 feet in elevation. It was a vacation home area west of Zion.

Almost no one was around, perhaps because it was still cold, but a horned lizard came out in front of me to greet me.
These are Banchan’s pictures as I didn’t have my camera with me then.

“Thanks for your support, Mr. Horned Lizard. I will do my best!”
I ran 6.8 miles with an easy pace in 90 minutes.
I also added a single, clear, purple highlight to my bangs. I just thought it would be fun to do something different.

Yesterday morning I ran 3.7 miles in 47 minutes around the neighborhood.

As I came to the front of our house and looked at this view, I thought that if I didn’t try to run fast, I might even be able to run a half marathon.

Last Saturday, I simulated a 5km on the treadmill. It includes warm-up time, so the distance and time is longer for that. But it’s 35:53 minutes, so I think I can beat my time from last year, which is my goal.

It seems to be quite a nervous bird. They fly away as soon as we come out from the car even if it’s a distance away.
We decided not to go observe for a while so that the eggs could hatch safely.
It has a yellow bill and legs, and a tail with a white band. Please take a look at the short video of the flight of this bird.
The 5K race is only 12 days away now. The course is at an altitude of 6,000ft. Above 4,900 ft it is considered to be “high altitude,” and the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere seems to drop dramatically. This means that the amount of oxygen entering the lungs is lower.
Our house is at 2,900 feet. Although the race is only an hour’s drive away, it is more than twice as high as our house.

When I ran last year, I wasn’t aware of the elevation gain at all, so I didn’t know why I couldn’t run as well as usual.
To be on top of everything this year, I ran the predicted course yesterday, although the course has not yet been announced.
As a result, I think the goal of “surpassing my time from last year” can probably be done.

Banchan went with me, and after the run we went to the nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument.
To be precise, we tried to go, but we couldn’t.

Since the altitude here is over 9,900 feet, the snow has not yet melted.
So we drove to Navajo Lake. The view that opened up took my breath away.

The water surface and snow with ice floating on it is dazzling.

The reward after a hard run was an unexpected and wonderful one.

We found a nesting Common Black Hawk.

It is a rare bird that is rarely seen in the United States, although it is said to be seen in Central and South America.

The nest was built in a cottonwood grove along a river.

Common Black Hawk We plan to go back tomorrow to see it again. Hopefully I will be able to get better pictures. For a detailed description, please click here. Common Black Hawk
We were so busy and weren’t home much for the last few weeks. So before I knew it, there were so many flowers in the backyard.

That’s not all.
Before we knew it, the Gambel Quail’s offspring had been born.

The year before last, we saw a little slow baby quail being eaten by a roadrunner. So Banchan set up this box at the back of the yard. We made a small hole in it so that they could escape if something happened to them.

We also prepared water in a shallow bowl.

It is a harsh natural world. Everyone is struggling to survive. That is why I want you to enjoy “living” for as long as possible. Thank you again for coming!

I started “running” last year.
I always wore this cap when I ran. So it has gotten stained with my sweat. I washed it once, but it is discolored and cannot be restored to the original nice color.

Here is a new cap I bought last month. I will wear it this year.

Will the color of the new cap fade with my sweat like last year’s by the end of this October? I have two races scheduled: a 5k in June and a 10k in October.
Last year’s cap seems to be encouraging me to “go for it!”
Spring is already in full swing.

So we painted the house. The house is 20 years old, and when we bought it 4 years ago, it was already in need of a fresh coat of paint.
It’s like a brand new house even though we just painted it the same color as before. It feels good!

Our house stands in a swirling circle around this volcanic fountain. We bought it because we like such curving beauty. This center is now beautiful, too, and it looks like the house is enjoying spring with the flowers.

However, being in a desert area, repairs are always needed. And when we start repairing one thing, other problems surface and we end up repairing more and more.

The large curved eave over this patio is pealing off due to water damage. It needs to be rebuilt, so the house painting is 90% complete, with the remaining 10% needing to wait a little longer.

By the way, the bathroom remodel we started the year before last is 99% complete, with 1% still waiting for a contractor. It’s a waiting game.
I will wait patiently, but I will wait positively so that this eave project will not be like the bathroom project.
The 2023 Half Ironman Race ended yesterday. This is a grueling race that requires swimming, cycling, and running to complete a total of 70.3 miles. It is an annual event here in Saint George. Here is the website.
https://www.ironman.com/im703-st-george
I also participate as a volunteer every year. Because this Ironman race has moved me and inspired me to change the course of my life a bit.

I usually work the early morning shift, around the time the professional Ironmen run, but this time I chose the last shift. I wanted to see the general public challenging hard.

Perhaps because of this, the shift was very relaxed.

We watched the last runner cross the finish line, cleaned up, and then got lots of leftovers when we left.

This is not the brand I refuel with when I run, but since they gave it to me, I will give it a try.

My training for the next event started a week ago.
I started doing 5K and 10K runs last year. I thought I had done enough after last fall’s race, but as the weather warmed up, I felt the urge to give it another try. I had the regretful feeling that I could have done a little more.

First up is the Utah Summer Games on June 10. Last year I won first place in my age group. But there were only two of us, so I just had to dash for the last 100 meters to win.
Personally, my challenge this year is how to deal with the 6500 feet elevation. Also, I would like to shorten my time by 6 minutes.
