The Lifetimes

I went to see the bristlecone pines, which thrive at an altitude of 3,000 meters and in harsh weather and soil conditions.

I’ve mentioned this place a couple of times on my old blog.

This time, we went there because we wanted to show Maple a tree famous for its longevity.

Beyond Maple, you can see the white and orange-colored surface of the Claron Formation. Growing there are bristlecones. As this formation is composed of limestone, most plants cannot survive there. Yet it is precisely in this environment that the bristlecone—a plant of the pine family—thrives.

Another characteristic of this tree is that its roots spread out along the ground.

Even when they seem on the verge of falling off a cliff, you often see them growing vigorously, reaching up towards the sky.

It’s a steep climb, so let’s take a short break. These bristlecones are also twisted and gnarled. That’s one of their distinctive features. That’s why this place is known as “The Twisted Forest”.

“Maple, you mustn’t eat that. It’s a baby tree, you know.”

“Hmm, how old is it now?” asked Maple, with her usual simple curiosity.

“Hmm, I don’t know. But it’s been alive for ages, even before I was born. And yet it’s still so tiny. It grows incredibly slowly.”

“So, how old is this big tree over here?”

“That’s a huge tree, isn’t it? I’ve no idea at all. It just gives off the impression that it might have been around for about a thousand years.”

“A thousand years? Do you mean a thousand years old?”

“That’s right, it’s a tree that lives for a very long time. It grows slowly and lives for a loooong time. Maple, you’ve only been around for eight months, but you have already grown this big. Isn’t that interesting?”

“Hmm, I’m not quite sure. Is it that they live at a different pace? If they grew at the same rate as me, would this tree live for about as long as I do?”

I was taken aback when Maple suddenly asked me a rather philosophical question. Naturally, I didn’t want to think about her dying just yet, so I pretended I couldn’t hear her because the wind was blowing so loudly.
