Hike 16: ミソサザイを求めて Search For Canyon Wren

昨日の午後、久しぶりの日差しが嬉しくて、スノーキャニオン州立公園に出かけました。　Being so happy to see sunshine after a long time, we went to Snow Canyon State Park yesterday afternoon.

2kg以上ある重いレンズを2本担いで8.3km歩いたので少々疲れましたが、疲れを吹き飛ばすほど嬉しい事がありました。 I was a little tired after walking 8.3 km carrying two heavy lenses weighing more than 2 kg, but there was something that made me so happy that it blew away my fatigue.

その理由は、ムナジロミソサザイに出会えたからです。 The reason for this is that I was able to see Canyon Wrens.

コロラド川沿いのリーズフェリーを訪れた時、一羽を発見して追いかけましたが、雨が降ってきて、いい質の写真が撮れませんでした。 When I visited Lees Ferry along the Colorado River, I spotted one and chased it, but it started raining and I was unable to get a good quality photo.

可愛いでしょ？目下、一番好きな鳥です。 Aren’t they cute? They are my favorite birds at the moment.

でも、翼を広げても17.5cmぐらい、14グラムしかない小さな鳥で、見つけるのは至難の業です。 But it is a small bird, measuring only about 7 inches with its wings spread, and weighing only 0.5oz. It is extremely difficult to spot.

ただ、そんなに小さい鳥なのに、鳴き声はとても大きくて、渓谷に響き渡ります。その鳴き声を頼りに、声の方に歩いて行き、飛んで来そうな岩壁を見つめてじっと待ちました。But for such a small bird, its cry is very loud and echoed through the canyon. We walked toward the voice with the call as our guide and waited patiently, staring at the rock wall where it was about to fly to.

ひとしきり美しく鳴いた後、更に高い岩壁の方に飛び去って行きました。 After beautiful singing and chirping, they flew away toward the higher rock walls.

Hike 15: Top Of The World

スノーキャニオン州立公園は、私の大好きな場所です。この日はその中にあるホワイトロックの一番高い場所、トップオブザワールドロックに登りました。 Snow Canyon State Park is one of my favorite places. We climbed the highest point of the White Rocks called which we called “Top of the World” on the day of the hike.

雨が降り続いていたので至る所に水溜りができていました。 It had been raining so hard the past few days that there were puddles of water everywhere.

巨大な亀の甲羅のようなナバホ砂岩の上を、慎重に慎重に歩いてドンドン高度を上げました。　We walked carefully and cautiously over Navajo sandstone that looked like the shell of a giant turtle, and gained altitude rather quickly.

目指す頂上が見えてきました。 The summit we were aiming for was now in sight.

最後の登りの前、眺めはすでに最高です。　Before the final climb, the view was already great.

でも、この岩場はとりわけ慎重に歩きました。　We were especially careful on the final rocky area.

これが頂上からの眺めです。 This is the view from the top.

狭いので、立つのもちょっと怖いほどでしたが、ハイクリーダーのジムはロッククライマーなのでマウンテンゴートのように軽やかに歩いてました。 It was so narrow at the top that it was scary to stand on for me, but Jim, the hike leader, is a rock climber, so he walked like a mountain goat.

平地に戻ってからトップオブザワールドロックを見上げ、「よくやったね！」と、自分を褒めてあげました。 When we got back to level ground, I looked up at the Top of the World Rock. I said, “You did great!” praising myself.

距離は6kmぐらいしかありませんでしたが、一歩一歩慎重に歩いたので、時間がかかりました。 The distance was only about 3.7 miles, but it took a long time because we walked carefully step by step.

雨あがりの後のハイキング、気持ちよかったです。 It was a nice hike after the rain.

Hike 37: ヒーラ トレイル Gila Trail

ヒーラ トレイルはスノーキャニオン州立公園内で多分最も長いトレイルです。 Gila trail is one of the longest trails in Snow Canyon State Park.

私たちはすでに南半分を歩いているので、今回は北の入り口から入り、日没までの2時間、往復6.5kmを歩きました。 We have already hiked the south end and middle of the trail before. This time, we started hiking from the north. We had only two hours until sunset. It was a 4 mile roundtrip hike.

もう毎日氷点下の日が続きます。だから日陰の雪は溶けません。 The snow on the trail hasn’t melted in shady places because we have had below freezing nights and cold daytime temperatures recently.

チョイアが光を浴びて気持ちよさそう。 A Cholla cactus looks happy getting sunlight.

遠くには雪で覆われたパイバレーマウンテンが見えます。 We saw the snow covered Pine Valley Mountains from a far distance.

渓谷内はもう暗くなっていましたが、それでもいい眺めです。 The inside of the canyon was already dark, but the view was still great to me.

帰り道もルンルンと半分走っていました。でも景色に見惚れて、前のめりにドーンと転んでしまいました。 I was enjoying it very much simply being there. I was running on and off, but fell forward onto the ground hard while looking at the fascinating view.

カメラを持っていなくてよかった！ I am glad I didn’t have my camera.

携帯が一番大きな打撃を受け、右のつま先と膝と手のひらを打撲しました。 My cell phone got the most damage, and I got a bruise on my right toe, knee, and palm.

そんな怪我をしてもなお、楽しい夕暮れのハイキングでした。 It was *still* a fun sunset hike although I hurt myself.

Hike 30: 天国への階段 Stairway To Heaven

10Kレースの後、何だかんだと忙しくしていました。そんな中久しぶりに山登りに出かけることができました。 I was busy with chores after the 10K race, butwe did go on a hike last week

スノーキャニオン州立公園内の道なき道、知る人ぞ知る天国への階段トレイルです。 The trail is called “Stairway to Heaven” inside Snow Canyon State Park, but it’s not on any map because it’s not an official trail.

登ったり、降ったりして奥地に向かいます。 We walked up and down, and went to a deeper section of the park.

ガイドがいたから来られた場所です。ちょっと話がそれますが、ガイドさんの二人もトレイルベストを着ていました。勿論私も。断然、楽！ We couldn’t have found the way without our guides. This is off tangent, but both our guides were wearing trail vests which made me happy. Of course, I was wearing mine. It’s so much easier than a backpack in many ways. I love it.

そして、ここが「天国への階段」と呼ばれるようになった所以の階段のような場所です。 And finally this is the “Stairway to Heaven”. Can you see it looks like a staircase?

馴染みのある風景。そこでみんなでバンザイ。影の記念写真です。 After we got to a familiar place on a ridge, we took a shadow group picture all doing a Banzai pose.

砂丘の様なうねりを見せるナバホ砂岩。こんな景色を後何回見られるのかなと考えると、涙が出てきそう。 Navajo Sandstone shows many different faces. The fine lines like this reminded me of a sand dune and it made me feel a little sentimental. How many more times can I see such beauty?

ところで、ここは有名な映画「明日に向かって撃て！」のシーンにもなった場所です。まさにここにロバートレッドフォードとポールニューマンが立っていたそうです。 By the way, this particular place was used for the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were right here during filming.

映画の中にはザイオン国立公園も遠くに見えるシーンがあります。ロバートレッドフォードの家が公園の近くにありますが、きっと映画の撮影の時、好きになったんですね。I could recognize Zion National Park in the move as well. I can easily imagine that Robert Redford fell in love with this area so much during the making of this movie, and that’s why he built his house near the park.

5kmの登り降りのたくさんある中級者向けコースです。 The hike was only 3.1 miles but it’s an intermediate hike because you need to go up and down a lot over steep slopes of sandstone rock.

キャンプを試す Camping Trial

キャンプはしたいけれど、いくつかの障害があると思っている人は結構いるはずです。私もその一人です。 I think that there are many people who want to do camping, but several issues prevent them from doing so. I am one of those people.

そこで、障害解決のため、近場のスノーキャニオン州立公園で一泊キャンプのテストをしてみました。 So we did a camping trial near our house to test solutions for those issues. We stayed in Snow Canyon State Park for a night.

バンちゃんは全然問題なくテントに寝られます。 Banchan can sleep in a tent.

でも、私はもうテントには寝たくない。過去の経験を思い返すと避けたい。RVを借りたら快適に過ごせるはずですが、バンちゃんはRVを運転したくない。ま、RVが走り込めない場所に行くとしたら、今の車を使ってテストするしかないわけです。 But I don’t want to sleep in a tent anymore. Remembering back to when I did it before, I want to avoid sleeping in a tent as much as possible. If we could rent an RV, I would love that. But Banchan doesn’t want to drive it. Come to think of it, it may be a good idea to test camping with our current SUV to prepare for a place where an RV cannot go.

そこで、xTerraの後ろに寝ることにしました。So, I had an opted to sleep in the back of the xTerra.

そして、空調の問題は4つの窓と後ろのハッチバックドア全部に網を貼り、解決しました。We solved the air circulation problem by attaching screens on all four window plus the back door.

もう一つの問題はトイレです。キャンプ場のトイレまで3分25秒。この距離は夜中に行きたい時は問題です。そこで、ポータブルトイレを購入しました。 Another issue is the restroom. It takes 3 minutes and 25 seconds in this campsite to walk to the restroom. This distance is a problem for me in the middle of the night. So we bought a portable toilet.

それにしても暑い。40Cを超えていました。 In any case, the afternoon temperature was so hot, above 104 F.

こんな暑い時にテントに寝ていた人たちは私たちだけでした。他の人たちはRVで来ていたので、クーラーのある車内で快適な夜を過ごしていたことでしょう。 We were the only ones with a tent at the tent sites. The rest of the people there were comfortably inside their RVs with the air conditioning on.

それでも、日が暮れると涼しい風が気持ちいい。 It became somewhat cooler with an occasional breeze after sunset.

いやいや、車の中はやっぱり暑かった。暑すぎて頭が痛くなり、夜中過ぎまで寝付けませんでした。 I’ll take my word back. It was still hot inside the car. I got a headache because of the heat and couldn’t sleep until after midnight.

翌朝、トイレ。24Cぐらいで快適でした。 It was about 75 F the next morning. We went to the park restroom comfortably.

太陽が昇る前の景色は素晴らしい。 The views before sunrise were gorgeous.

こんな景色に出会えるからキャンプするんですね。 We want to camp because we can see such majestic views.

でも、こんなに暑い時は、やはり避けましょう。ハイキングの計画もしていましたが、それもやめて、さっさと退去しました。 I say we should still avoid such a hot season. We planned to do an early morning hike, but we decided to go home right away instead.

第一回目のキャンプテスト、65％成功でした。 Our 1st camping trial was 65% successful.

Hike 24: パドレ渓谷 Padre Canyon

パドレ渓谷はスノーキャニオン州立公園内からトゥアカーン野外劇場に通じる渓谷です。私たちは、公園内からスタートして、トゥアカーン側に降っていく出前の尾根まで登り、同じ道を帰ってきました。往復7.8kmの山道でした。The Padre Canyon trail runs from Snow Canyon State Park to Tuacahn Amphitheater. We started from the Snow Canyon State Park side, hiked up to the saddle where sat at the highest point before going down to the Tuacahn side. It was a 4.8 mile long hike.

早朝の光を受けて金色に輝く岩壁が美しい。 The morning light shined on the red rock turning it golden.

朝6時半の空気はまだ優しい。 The air was still so gentle around 6:30 in the morning.

この後長い砂地を歩き、急な登りとなります。 We walked on a long sandy wash, then hiked up the steep trail.

スノーキャニオンはどこを見ても美しい。疲れは飛んでしまいます。Snow Canyon State Park is so pretty no matter where we go. Our fatigue disappeared in front of the views.

たった3時間のハイキングでこんなに素晴らしい景色が見られるなんて、私たちはなんてラッキーなんでしょう。。It took only three hours to go up and back to see this beautiful view. How lucky we are to be able to do so.

ヒーラモンスターを求めて再びスノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。 We went to Snow Canyon State Park again to find a Gila monster.

ノドグロヒメドリさん、ヒーラモンスター見かけませんでしたか？ Hello, Black-throated Sparrow. Have you seen a Gila monster?

見かけませんね。No, I haven’t seen it.

白い尾のアンテロープリスさん、ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？ Hello, White-tailed Antelope squirrel. Have you seen a Gila monster?

No, I haven’t. 見てないよ。

サバクハリトカゲさん、いつもと違って面白いところにいますね。ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？遠い親戚ですよね？Hello, Desert Spiny lizard. You are at such an interesting place today. Have you seen a Gila monster? Isn’t it your distant cousin?

見てないよ。ところで、時々野菜も食べなくちゃいけないからこんな所にもも来るんだよ。No, I haven’t. By the way, I need to eat vegetables sometimes, so I come up here.

イワミソサザイさん、朝ご飯の最中ですか？お取り込み中失礼します。ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？Hello, Rock wren. Sorry to bother you in the middle of your breakfast. Have you seen a Gila Monster?

見てない。もう、いい加減にして！あっちに行って！No! That’s enough. Go away!

雪　- Snow

夕方から降り始めた雪。Snow started falling near sunset.

夜中前には止んでしまったので、それほど積もりませんでした。でも、あたりはみんな雪化粧。It didn’t piled up that much because it stopped before midnight. But still, it covered everything.

早起きをして、外に出ました。裏庭をチェックしようと思いましたが、すでに太陽が登り始めています。We woke up before sunrise and went outside. I wanted to check out the backyard but by then, the sun was already rising.

まずい、急がないと！We should hurry up!

MVロックの空にも光が差し込み始めました。Oh, no. The clouds above our MV rock were already lit.

朝日を受けて赤く見える丘も、白くなってる。The hill normally shows gorgeous red color with morning sun, but it’s golden white yesterday.

ビーバーダム山脈は、純白ね。Wow, the Beaver Dam Mountains were pure white.

急がないと。スノーキャニオン州立公園へ向かいます。5分ぐらいで着いてしまう近さは嬉しい。We’d better hurry up. We drove out to Snow Canyon State Park. We are so lucky that it’s only five minutes away from home.

わー綺麗。見るもの全部が新鮮です。Wow, everything is so refreshingly pretty.

雪は不思議です。Snow is mysterious.

一晩寝たら、みんな白。魔法をかけられたよう。It changes everything over night. It’s like magic.

馴染み深い岩も今まで見たことがないような景色に変身です。The familiar rocks looked so different with snow.

雪は黒い溶岩やカクタスも全部白く覆っていました。The snow covered everything, including the black lava rocks and plants.

みなさん、考えることは同じようです。早朝だというのに雪景色を見にもうたくさんの人が園内を走っていました。I guess everyone thinks the same way. It was quite early, yet many cars were already in the park.

帰路、Tuacahn野外劇場に立ち寄りました。わー、誰かがもう雪だるまを作ってる。雪は突然やってきて、みんなをワクワクさせてくれました。On the way back home, we stopped by Tuacahn Amphitheatre. How cute! Someone had already made a snowman. The snow came to us suddenly and made everyone excited.

ビー玉ゴロゴロ -Marbles Everywhere

早朝、スノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。このビー玉を撮るためです。ぎっしりと歩く場所もないほども積もった小さなビー玉より少し大きめの丸い石。- I went to Snow Canyon State park early morning because I wanted to take pictures of marbles.  They were everywhere leaving so little space for me to step.

こちらはまだ岩から分離されてない状態。- These are still attached to the rock.

これはコンクリーションと言います。一度、この事を書きました。私の中ではまだ未消化だったので、もう少し調べてみました。Moqui Marblesとも言うそうです。そして、思いがけない記事を発見しました。- It’s called concretions. I wrote about it once before, but I felt I needed to research more, so I did.  It’s also called Moqui Marbles.  And I found an interesting article.

発見した記事は、火星探査機、ローバーが送ってきた数枚の写真についてです。ＮASAは画像の物体を不思議がり、ブルーベリーというニックネームをつけました。そこにはスノーキャニオンのビー玉のようなものが写っていたんですね。確かにこんな光景だったらブルーベリーと名付けてもおかしくない。- The article is about a few pictures from NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity.  The researchers at NASA were so puzzled with the objects in the images, which they called “Blueberries”.  They have found small rocks like Snow Canyon’s Moqui Marbles in them.   Indeed, in the picture below, they do look like blueberries.  

スノーキャニオンのコンクリーションは、火星のものとは違い赤鉄鉱でできていますが、出来方は同じなのではないかという仮説があります。ここの Moqui Marble、火星のブルーベリー。遠く離れていても、自然の仕組みは同じなのでしょうか。そうだとしたら、とても面白い！- The concretions in Snow Canyon are made of hematite, unlike the ones at Mars. Some researchers think, however, that the process of creating them is the same.   We call them as Moqui Marbles on Earth and Blueberries on Mars.  It is very exciting to think that the mechanism of nature is the same even though Earth and Mars are worlds away.

ホワイトロック野外劇場 – Whiterocks Amphitheater

ホワイトロックはスノーキャニオン州立公園の北の方にあり、他の赤い岩とは対照的な存在です。 – Whiterocks is located at northern part of Snow Canyon State Park.  As the name indicates, its white color creates a contrast to the red rocks in the park.

私たちはその中心部にできた野外劇場と呼ばれる所にに行ってみることにしました。 – We decided to go to the Amphitheater naturally created in the Whiterocks.

駐車場から最短コースなら約 1.5 km ですが、私たちは溶岩流でできた洞窟側からの8 km ほどのコースを歩きました。 – It’s only 0.9 miles from the closest parking lot, but we took a longer way, about 5 miles through Lava Tubes Trail.  雨が降りそうで降らない、雲の変化が激しい日でした。途中で振り返ると、渓谷の景色が広がります。 – The cloud formations in the sky changed a lot from sunny to almost rain but it made our hike more interesting.  A gorgeous view spread out in front of us when I looked back.

ついつい見とれてしまいますが、いよいよホワイトロックに向かいます。- What a sight it was, but we should move on.

遠くの方で雨が降っているようです。でも、こんな風に風化された岩を見ると先に進まずに入られません。 – We could see that rain had started far away, but seeing a rock like this motivated us more to go forward.

だんだん傾斜も急になってきました。左側がナバホ砂岩層で右のボコボコしている方がカーメル層。私たちは違う2層の間を登って行きました。- The slope got steeper.  Navajo Sandstone is on the left and the Carmel Formation is on the right.  We walked through between the two formations.

ついに野外劇場に着きました。もちろん、十分にソーシャルディスタンスを取っています。音響効果がどんなものか知りたくて、つい歌ってしまいました。気持ちいい！ – Here is the Amphitheater.  We kept more than enough social distance while there.  I couldn’t resist the urge to test out the sound effects, so I started singing.  What a great feeling!

歩いてきた方を見上げると、まだ雪が残るパインバレー山脈が見えます。 – When I looked back, I could see the Pine Valley Mountains with snow on top.

下を見ると、ナバホ砂岩層。クロスベッドが水の流れによってゆっくりと形成されていった過程が想像できます。 – When I looked down, there is the Navajo Sandstone Formation.  I could imagine that the layers of cross-bedding by currents formed slowly.

遠い太古の出来事。 – It all happened at time immemorial.

今から1,000万年後にはどんなになっているのでしょうね。 – I wondered what would be happening 10 million years from now.

当然、私たちは生きていないんですが、ふぅ〜っと時空を超えた世界を想像すると世の中の雑念が消えていくようです。- Of course, we won’t be alive then, but imagining like that, going beyond the time and space, clears my worldly thoughts.

こんな表面も風化作用で砂になり、砂丘になり、もしかしたら新しいクロスベッドが形成されるかもしれない。 – The surface of the rocks like this could become a sand hill or new cross-bedding in the future.

しばらく意味のない思いに浸っていたかったんですが、遠くに見える雨雲に追い立てられて帰途につきました。 – Although I was enjoying my meaningless thoughts, the rain clouds told us to go home as they were approaching closer to us.  So we went home.

Toe Trail

雲が流れている日に Toe というトレイル を歩いた。  – We hiked the Toe trail in a day that clouds were moving in the sky.

Ivinsという隣町からTuacahnという野外劇場への道に抜ける Toe という短いトレイル。バンちゃんの背中の手術後の経過を待ちながら少しづつ体力作りができたらいいと願う。  – The trail is a short trail that starts from Ivins and leads to the road to get to the Tuacahn Theatre.  After Banchan’s back surgery,  we are patiently waiting for the recovery.  The recovery is slow but his physical strength is better day by day.

このトレイルで陸ガメがよく見られるというウワサを聞いて、今回で2回目。でも、シンとしてカメどころか鳥もあまり見かけなかった。冬眠に入る前に見たかったけど、もう時間切れでしょうか。  – It’s been said that tortoises have seen on this trail.  So it was the second attempt for us, but unfortuanatly we had no luck seeing any tortoises.  Actually there weren’t very many animals at all. It was simply very quiet.   I am afraid we will run out of time before the tortoises go down deep in the ground for hybernation this year.  

雲の隙間から流れ出る太陽の光、それを受けた稜線は輝き、空高く導かれていた。 – Beams of sunshine breaking through the clouds shined down on the ridge.  It was as if those beams of sunshine were coaxing the ridge higher and higher into the sky.

久しぶりのランドスケープ写真と散歩、のどかに過ぎました。It was simply peaceful.  We casually walked and stopped from time to time to take landscape pictures.  The time passed by very quietly.

夏の終わりに

まだ暑いんですが、もう夏じゃないと感じます。レイバーデーウィークエンドの真っ只中の今日、明日の撮影会の準備です。

IMA_5289　　久しぶりに持つカメラ。

4台のフラッシュ設定を時間をかけてしていくと、なんだかすごく懐かしい。そっか、これが多分カリフォルニアでの最後の撮影会になるからかもしれないんだ。

ユタ州の南端、Saint George という町に引っ越します。目下、準備中。この写真は Snow Canyon State Park で撮ったたった一枚の写真。買おうとしている家から10分ぐらいで行けてしまう。

これから、引越しに関するドタバタ騒動劇を少しずつ書いていきます。来年2月、3月ごろには引越し完了しているはずです。
