未完成の家 Our Incomplete House

すでに春真っ盛りです。 Spring is already in full swing.

雪が降って一度死んでしまったけど、復活したバタフライブッシュと黄色いデイジー。 Butterfly bush and yellow daisies. The daisies died when it snowed, but they came back to life.

Desert Bird of Paradiseももうすぐ花が咲きそうです。その向こうのスパニッシュブルームはすでに真っ盛り。 Desert Bird of Paradise will soon be in bloom. Behind it, the Spanish broom is already in full bloom.

ということで、家のペンキ塗り替えをしました。この家は築20年だそうで、4年前に購入した時にはすでに塗り替えが必要な時でした。 So we painted the house. The house is 20 years old, and when we bought it 4 years ago, it was already in need of a fresh coat of paint.

同じ色を塗り替えただけなのに新品の家になったみたいです。気持ちいい！ It’s like a brand new house even though we just painted it the same color as before. It feels good!

私たちの家はこの火山のような噴水を中心に、渦巻くように丸く立っています。そんな曲線美が気に入って購入しました。この中心も綺麗になって、家が花と一緒に春を楽しんでいるみたい。 Our house stands in a swirling circle around this volcanic fountain. We bought it because we like such curving beauty. This center is now beautiful, too, and it looks like the house is enjoying spring with the flowers.

ただ、砂漠地帯ということもあり、修理が常に必要です。そして修理し始めると、またさらに別の問題が浮上して、ますます修理することになったりします。 However, being in a desert area, repairs are always needed. And when we start repairing one thing, other problems surface and we end up repairing more and more.

このパティオの大きくカーブしたヒサシが水害で剥がれてきました。作り替え必要となり、家の塗装工事も90％完成で、後の10％はもう少し待つ必要がありそうです。 The large curved eave over this patio is pealing off due to water damage. It needs to be rebuilt, so the house painting is 90% complete, with the remaining 10% needing to wait a little longer.

ところで、一昨年スタートしたバスルームのリモデルですが、99％完成。1％は未だにコントラクター待ちという「いつまで待てる？」ゲームみたいな世界です。 By the way, the bathroom remodel we started the year before last is 99% complete, with 1% still waiting for a contractor. It’s a waiting game.

焦らず気長に待ちますが、このヒサシもそんなことにならないようにポジティブに待ちます。 I will wait patiently, but I will wait positively so that this eave project will not be like the bathroom project.

昨日は快晴だったのに、今日は再び雲が空を覆い、強風が吹いていて、寒いです。 Yesterday was clear, but today the sky is once again covered with clouds, strong winds are blowing, and it is cold!

でも、すでに、確かに春です。 But, indeed, I know it’s already spring.

先週、雪がパラつく中、ハヤブサを見に出かけました。肉眼では絶対に見えないけれど、大きな声で泣いていた方角に望遠レンズを向けると、いました。かろうじてそれらしき姿を収める事ができました。遠い、遠い崖の上です。 Last week, we went to see a falcon although there were snow flurries in the air. We couldn’t see them with the naked eyes, but when I pointed my telephoto lens in the direction where they were crying loudly, there they were. I was barely able to capture what appeared to be a falcon. It was far, far away on the cliff.

このキツツキ、日本語名はわかりません。2羽、忙しく古い木を突いてました。 Two Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were busily pecking at an old tree.

こちらわお馴染み、スクラブジェイです。寒そうですね。 Here is a familiar face, a Scrub Jay. It looks cold.

でも、昨日は良い天気。リスが日向ぼっこをしに出てきました。 But yesterday was a beautifully sunny day. A squirrel came out to enjoy the sun.

こちら、スクラブジェイさんは地面をゴソゴソと掘り返して、何かを探しているようです。 Here, Mr. Scrub Jay is rummaging around in the ground, looking for something.

「すみません、何を探してるんですか？」 “Excuse me, what are you looking for?”

「もう4月だというのに何にも準備できてなくて忙しいんだ。」 “It’s April already, but I haven’t done anything yet, so I am so busy.”

「何の準備をしているの？」 “What are you getting ready for?”

「決まってるでしょ。産卵のための巣作りだよ！」 “Don’t you think it’s obvious? It’s nest material to lay our eggs!”

それを聞いて私たちも慌てて植木屋さんに駆け込んで、新しい花や木を買ってきました。鳥や蝶々や蜂たちが喜びそうなものばかりです。 Hearing this, we also rushed to the nursery, and bought new flowers and trees. I have chosen plants that birds, butterflies and bees would love.

中でも、以下の木は今年初めて試してみる直物です。ロイヤルレッドバタフライブッシュと言います。　このウェブサイトに花の写真があります。 Among them, the following tree is the first trial this year. See the pictures on this website.（https://www.monrovia.com/royal-red-butterfly-bush.html）私の背丈より高く成長するそうです。 They say it will grow taller than I am.

まだ小さくて花が咲いていないので、成長するまで前にマリーゴールドを植えて見ました。 As it’s still small and not yet flowering, I planted marigolds in front of it.

中庭の門脇に収まりました。 It fits by the gate of the courtyard.

それにしても、ブルブルブル、今日はまた寒い日に戻ってしまいました。日本で言う三寒四温のような現象なんでしょうか？ In any case, gosh! it’s so cold. It went back to a cold day today. Is this a phenomenon like the “3 days cold and 4 days warm” in Japan?

春の贈り物 – Spring Gift

ラップトップの故障でしばらくお休みしていたら、春はどんどん過ぎていってしまいました。ここ、セイントジョージはもう夏のように暑い日が時々訪れますが、まだ春の名残も残してます。While I was taking time off from writing posts for a while because my laptop broke down, Spring has almost gone away. It is nearly summer already, but I can still find some signs of Spring remaining here and there.

6月初め、裏庭の手入れをしていたら、急にウズラお母さんが低木の中から大慌てで飛び出してきました。私の勘が当たっていれば、嬉しい贈り物。早速 Ring カメラを設置してみました。以下、6月3日の午後1時の映像です。It was the beginning of June. When I was gardening in backyard, a quail came out from a bush suddenly as if it was startled. I immediately took it as a lovely present. So we set up a Ring security camera there. The video below is from around 1:00 pm on June 3rd.

思いがけない春の贈り物に、久しぶりに興奮しました。日本語名はズアカカンムリウズラといいます。ヒナを数えたら11匹もいました。I was so excited with the unexpected gift from Spring. I counted the Gambel’s quail chicks. There were 11 of them total.

北カリフォルニアに住んでいた頃は、毎年春先になると庭にたくさん来てくれたロビン（コマツグミ）。春を告げて幸せを呼ぶ鳥とされています。St. George に引っ越して来てから、初めての春、まだ見かけてないんですよね。これから来るのかな？ – Many American Robins visited our garden in the early Spring every year when we lived in Northern California. Robins are known to be a symbol of Spring and happiness. This is our first Spring in Saint George, I haven’t seen them yet. I wonder if they will migrate here soon.

その代わり、別の春と幸せを呼ぶ鳥、ツバメを発見しました。日本語名はわかりません。　Northern Rough-Winged Swallow です。そこで尋ねて見ました。- However, I have found another symbolic bird for Spring and happiness, the Norther Rough-Winged Swallow.

「春だよ〜、春だよ〜！」と、ツバメ。-“Spring…! Spring has come!!!” said the swallow.

「ツバメさん、春を告げてくれてありがとう。ロビンさんを見かけませんでしたか？」- “Thank you, Mr. Swallow for telling us that Spring has come. Have you seen Mr. Robin by any chance?”

「わからないなー。多分見てない。」 – “I don’t know. Maybe I haven’t seen him yet.”

「じゃあ、会ったらこっちの方にも来てくれるよう、伝えてください。」- “Would you tell him to come over here when you meet him?”

「わかった。でも、この空、見て。広いからどうかな。春だよ〜！」- “OK, but look at this sky. It’s so big. The chance is slim to see him. Spring! Spring has come!”

iPhone で見つけた春

モクレンの花が道脇に咲きはじめてからどのぐらいたったのでしょうか。気がついたらお隣のナシの木にも白い花が咲きはじめていました。そんな風景を見ると気はそぞろ。方や近くの家先には、まだクリスマスの飾り付けがあったりします。清少納言ちゃんがそんな風景を見たら、どんな形容をするのでしょうか。

2月3日、節分か〜と思いながら、今日は久しぶりにiPhone 片手に裏山に登りました。ダンスのための体力作り。

iPhone も悪くない。こんなに咲きはじめてしまった桜を見つけてくれました。

木々も光を受けて嬉しそう。
ハンターズポントへ向かう途中で見つけてくれたカタバミ。きっと、あっという間に丘一面を黄色くしてくれることでしょう。

春はやっぱりいいなぁ。ウキウキ、ソワソワしてきちゃう。行き交う人達もなんとなく嬉しそう。遠く、Lick Observatory も見えていました。ブログには、iPhone の写真で十分なんでしょうかね〜。そこそこいい。

ただ、家に向かう途中のフクロウの森。（勝手に名付けてますが。）遠くからフクロウのホーホーという鳴き声。こんな日中に見えるわけないよねぇ？と思いつつも見上げたら、なんと、目の悪い私にも見えた！　久しぶりに味わった悔しさ・・・　一眼レフで500mm のレンズじゃないと絶対無理なのはわかってます。・・・そう、写真家よ、チャンスを逃したくなかったら、カメラを忘れるべからず。

草むらのずーっと向こう、幸せを呼ぶ青い鳥を発見！

ハンターズポイントからはクパチーノの街が見渡せます。まさか、と思いましたが、建設中のAppleのHQ、スペースシップがしっかりと見えました。何しろ、直径が500メートルもあるという建物ですから、遠くからでも見えて当然かな。生徒の一人は仕事で毎日この中を歩くそうですが、一周歩くのに20-30分はかかるそうです。

かつて市役所の近くに住んでいたので、しっかり覚えています。スティーブ・ジョブスが市役所に建設申請をしに来た日のこと。その日のビデオ映像。何しろ道には車が溢れていて大混雑だったんですから。
彼がこの光景を見られないのが本当に残念です。
