先日、スノーキャニオン州立公園の化石の丘に登りました。　The other day, we climbed Petrified Dunes in Snow Canyon State Park.

2億年前、ジュラ紀には砂丘として存在していました。その後、何千万年もの間の堆積物はこの砂丘を覆い被していました。そして、1億年前、白亜紀には様々な要因で海底に沈み、そのおかげで砂丘の砂はセメント漬けにされたようにお互いに固定し合って砂丘全体がそのまま固まりました。時は流れ、さらなる地殻変動を経て砂丘は隆起し、風化作用の結果、堆積物は取り除かれ、固まった姿の元の砂丘が出現したわけです。　200 million years ago, during the Jurassic Period, this place was a field of sand dunes. Subsequently, over tens of millions of years, sediment accumulated and covered the sand dunes. Then, 100 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, it sank to the seabed due to various factors; as a result, the sand grains became firmly bound together, as if cemented, and the entire sand dune solidified in its original form. As time passed and following further tectonic activity, the dune was uplifted; as a result of weathering, the sediment above was eroded away, revealing the original dunes in their solidified form.

高いところまで登って休憩です。朝日を浴びて、メイプルも2億年前に思いを馳せていました。 We climbed up to a high spot to take a break. Basking in the morning sun, Maple’s thoughts wandered back 200 million years.

その後、小さな丸いボールをたくさん見つけてメイプルは興奮していました。 After that, Maple was thrilled to find lots of little round balls.

「これ、全部食べたい〜！」 “I want to eat them all!”

「これはモキボールだから食べちゃダメだよ。」 “They are Moqui Balls, so you mustn’t eat them.”

「一つぐらいいいでしょ？」 “Surely one won’t hurt, will it?”

「ダメ。ナバホ砂岩の中の鉄が沈澱してできたものだから、鉄の塊なんだよ。」 “No. It’s a lump of iron, formed when iron precipitated out of the Navajo Sandstone.”

納得いかないメイプルでしたが、まだ岩の表面に残っているモキボール予備軍を見て、少し納得したようです。 Although Maple wasn’t entirely convinced, she seemed to come round a little when she saw the potential Moqui Balls still clinging to the surface of the rock.

「これも化石なの？」 “Is this a fossil too?’”

「モキボールはコンクリーションって言われる鉄の塊だから、化石とはちょっと違う。」 “A Moqui ball is a lump of iron known as a concretion, so it’s not quite the same as a fossil.”

「ちょっと紛らわしいな。化石ってなに？石化って何？」　”That’s a bit confusing. What’s a fossil? And what’s petrified?”

「メイプル、いい質問だね。化石は地層の中に保存されてきた太古の生き物や生物のこと。石化は大昔の物が、その形は残していても中身がいれかえられて固まる事をいうんだよ。」 “Maple, that’s a good question. Fossils are ancient creatures and organisms that have been preserved within geological strata. Petrification is when something from a very long time ago retains its shape but has its contents replaced and solidified.”

. . . . . . . ?

丘を降り始めると、メイプルが目をキラキラさせながら言いました。「じゃあー、今が1億年前なら、今、私たち海の中を歩いているんだね！」　As we began to walk down the hill, Maple said, her eyes sparkling, “So—if it were 100 million years ago right now, that would mean we’re walking through the sea, aren’t we?!!!”
