鳥の分類表 Bird Classification Table

前回のブログで水禽類を紹介しました。これからいよいよ待ちに待った陸の鳥の分類に入ります。 In my last blog I introduced water fowl. I will now finally begin the long awaited classification of land birds.

その前に、復習も兼ねて全体像を見てみましょう。以下の表が今現在の分類です。小さすぎて、読めないですかね。Excelシートを使っているので折りたたんで小さくしたんですが。全体像は分かっていただけると思います。 Before I begin, let’s do a review and overview. The following table is my current classification. Is it too small to read? I tried to make it smaller by using Excel’s collapse feature. In any case, I hope you get the overall picture.

ここで一番注目していただきたいところは、表の一番下の列のルリノジコ属です。ここまで掘り下げるのが目標です。 The most noteworthy part here is the genus Passerina in the bottom row of the table. The goal is to dig down till this layer.

この属には、つい最近追いかけていたムネアカルリノジコが入っているんです。 This genus includes the Lazuli Bunting, which I have been chasing just recently.

しかも、見てみたいゴシキノジコも入っている！ And it also includes Painted Bunting that I would like to see!

ということで、これからも陸の鳥類の中、深い階層を潜り抜けていかなければなりません。 旅は長いです。 So I must continue to dive through the deep hierarchy among land birds. The journey is long.

警告！うっそー！　Warning! Oh, no!!!

突然、私のコンピュータの画面上に警告のポップアップが表示されました。HDの残りの許容量が30GBを切っていたんですね。マズイです。これでは写真やビデオの編集ができません。大至急データを外付けHDに移動して整理する必要があります。 Suddenly, a warning pop-up appeared on my computer screen: the remaining allowance on my HD was less than 30 GB. No way! This means I cannot edit my photos and videos. I need to move and organize my data to an external HD ASAP.

水禽類 Waterbirds

鳥類の分類も水禽類まできました。この分類が終われば、最初から一番分類したかった次のグループ、陸の鳥類が待っています。 The long process of classifying birds has come to Aequomithes, the waterbirds. Once this clade classification is complete, the next clade that I wanted to classify the most, Teliurarves, Landbirds, awaits.

私の分類は、ただ単に私が撮りためた鳥の写真の整理のための区分です。水禽類は全部まとめて1つのグループにして5番目のグループとしました。 Rather than detailing all the different types of waterbirds, I have grouped all of the waterbirds together into one group, the fifth group from the top of the list.

このグループで私が撮りたい鳥はペンギンです。どの種も南半球に住む鳥たちなので、なかなか目撃する機会がありません。 The most important birds I would like to photograph in this group are penguins. All of these species live in the southern hemisphere, so I don’t get many opportunities to see them.

ガラパゴス諸島を旅した時、ガラパゴスペンギン、グンカンドリ、アオアシカツオドリを目撃しました。25年前に一生に一度の夢のような旅をした時の事です。でも、まだ写真に興味を持っていない時だったので、使い捨てカメラを持って旅をしていました。残念なことに、現像された写真も引っ越しの最中にどこかに消えていってしまいました。だから、写真はありません。涙！！！ Many years ago, I traveled to the Galapagos Islands and saw Galapagos Penguins, Great frigatebird, and Blue-footed Boobies on a once-in-a-lifetime dream trip 25 years ago. But it was a time when I wasn’t yet interested in photography, so I traveled with disposable cameras. Unfortunately, the developed photos disappeared somewhere during the move. So I have no photos. Good grief!!!

ペリカン目の中にはトキやサギなども含まれています。ちょっと以外でもありますが、水中の生き物を食するという共通項が同じグループになる理由なんでしょうかね。ともあれ、この目の鳥の写真はすでにたくさんあるので、満足です。 The order of Pelicans also includes Ibis and Herons. It is a little bit strange to me, but I guess the common denominator is that they all prey on underwater creatures. Anyway, I am satisfied with these birds because I already have many photos of them.

サンスベリアの春 Spring Has Come To Snake Plant

もう十年以上も一緒に生活している観葉植物のサンスベリアです。This is a houseplant, Sansevieria, Snakeplant, that has been living with us for over a decade now.

今まで見たこともなかったのに、この地に引っ越してきてから花が咲くようになりました。観葉植物にも花が咲くんだと、その時知りました。 I had never flowered before we moved here. But, now I have learned that even houseplants can bloom.

これからこの蕾が開いて、小さな白い花が咲きます。 From now on, these buds will open and small white flowers will bloom.

下の写真、水滴のように見えるものがついていますが、家の中なので、もちろん違います。触るとネバネバするので、花の樹液なんでしょうか。 In the photo below, there are what look like water droplets on it, but of course they are not, since it is inside the house. It is sticky to the touch, so I wonder if it is flower sap.

家の中にずーっといるだけなのに、サンスベリアにも春が来るんですね。 Spring is coming for the snakeplant, even though it is just inside the house all the time.

サンスベリアは植物の分類学上、キジカクシ科に属しています。実は、前庭に咲いているユッカも同じくキジカクシ科に属しているんです。こちらも花が咲く準備が整ってきました。 The Snakeplant belongs to the family of Asparagaceae in terms of plant taxonomy. In fact, the Yucca blooming in the front yard also belongs to the same family. My Yucca is getting ready to bloom as well.

ところで、キジカクシ科には野菜のアスパラガスも入っているそうです。そう言われると、似ているような気がします。 By the way, Asparagaceae family also includes the vegetable asparagus. That being said, they seem to be similar.

私の鳥の分類は、新鳥類の下、アマツバメ目、ヨタカ目、カッコウ目まで整理できました。　I have been able to organize my bird taxonomy under Neoaves, the new bird orders, the Amatiformes, the Ictinidae, and the Cuckoos.

以下の表には、ハト目、ツル目、フラミンゴ目、チドリ目と続きます。でも、この3目に関しては、見てみたい鳥リスト（水色ハイライト）の中のタンチョウとニシツメドリについて書きます。ちなみに、黄色のハイライトは注目したい目、科などです。ベージュ色はすでに目撃した鳥たちですが、大切にしたい鳥です。　The following table continues with the Doves, Cranes, Flamingos, and Plovers. But for these three orders, I will write about the Red-crowned Cranes and Puffin in the list of birds I want to see (light blue highlights). By the way, yellow highlights are the orders, families, etc. that I want to focus on. The beige colors are birds that I have already witnessed but want to cherish.

タンチョウは残念ながらアメリカ大陸には存在せず、日本の北海道、ロシア東部、韓国北部、中国北東部に生息しています。だから、観察するためには北海道まで行かないとみられません。Unfortunately, red-crowned cranes do not exist in the Americas, but are found in Hokkaido in Japan, eastern Russia, northern Korea, and northeastern China. Therefore, I have to go to Hokkaido to observe them.

しかも、あの美しいタンチョウのダンスを見るためには雪の中でなければなりません。そんな機会が来るかどうかわかりませんが、ぜひとも見てみたいトップ10に入る鳥です。 Moreover, I have to be in the snow to see that beautiful Red-crowned crane dance. I don’t know if such an opportunity will ever come to me, but it is one of the top 10 birds I would love to see.

もう一種はニシツノメドリです。この鳥も残念ながら大西洋の北極圏近くまで行かないと見られません。しかも飛んでいない時は岸壁に作られた巣に止まっているので陸力では観察しにくいです。アラスカを旅した時にはツノメドリが飛んでいる姿を目撃しましたが、揺れている船上からの撮影はとても難しく、一枚も撮れませんでした。いつかニシツメドリをぜひ見てみたいです。 The other species I want to see is the Common Puffin. Unfortunately, this bird can only be seen near the Arctic Circle in the Atlantic Ocean. When not flying, they perch on nests built on the shore, making them difficult to observe from land. When we traveled to Alaska, I saw Horned Puffins flying, but it was very difficult to photograph them from a rocking boat. So, I have no pictures of this bird. I would very much like to see the Common Puffin someday.

フタオビチドリは飛べないフリをするのが上手な鳥と言われています。地面の上で羽をばたつかせ、もがいているように見えました。　Killdeer is said to be a bird that is very good at pretending to be unable to fly. It appeared to be flapping its wings and struggling on the ground.

追記です。以下の写真はアメリカオオバンの親子です。オオバンは北アメリカ全土、湖や池があれば大抵見られる鳥です。しかも何十もの群れをなしています。真っ黒の体に白い嘴で、大きさはアヒルより小さいです。足は短くて太っています。そんな風貌はツルとは真逆なのに、ツル目に属しています。面白いですね！　

Note: The following photos show a Mother and chick American Coot. The American Coot is a bird that can be seen in most lakes and ponds throughout North America, and usually found in flocks of dozens. They are smaller than ducks, with black bodies and white bills. Their legs are short and fat. Despite their appearance being totally unlike cranes, they belong to the order of cranes. Interesting!

サバクゴファーガメとアメリカドクトカゲを探しに出かけました。 We went out to look for Desert Tortoises and Gila Monsters.

もう十分暖かくなっているので、亀が歩き始めている季節です。また、一年に一回しか出てこないアメリカドクトカゲも、今頃出ていると聞いています。 It has already warmed up enough that it is time for the tortoises to start walking. I have also heard that the Gila Monsters, which only come out once a year, is out about now.

去年行った場所と同じ所を歩きました。その時はデザートウィローの花が満開の時期で、柔らかな花弁はサバクゴファートカゲの大好物なか、10匹以上のカメがお食事中でした。今回もまたそんな風景を期待して出かけたのですが1匹も見る事ができませんでした。花が全く開花していなかったので、まだ早すぎたのかもしれません。　We walked in the same area as we did last year. At that time, the Desert Willow flowers were in full bloom, and the soft petals were a favorite of Desert tortoises, and more than 10 tortoises were feeding. We went out hoping to see such a scene this time again, but we did not see a single tortoise. It may have been too early to see them because the flowers had not bloomed at all.

アメリカドクトカゲも見つけられませんでした。もう5年間も、探し続けています。忍耐強く、見つけるまで探し続けます。 I couldn’t find any Gila Monsters either. Banchan and I have been searching for 5 years now. I cannot stop now. I will keep looking for it until we find it.

その代わり、ゼブラのように縞のシッポを持つトカゲがたくさん走っていました。 Instead, there were many Zebra-tailed lizards.

ゼブラテールは駿足なので、なかなかいいショットが撮れません。とりわけシッポをカールさせて走る所は可愛いので、写真の代わりにビデオに収めました。質は悪いのですが、雰囲気がわかると思います。

早すぎてよく見えないので、4分の1のスピードに落としました。腕立て伏せをしているところで終了です。　It was too fast to see well, so I slowed this video down to a quarter of the speed. The video ends at the push-ups scene.

紙袋の低木 Paperbag Bush

鳥の分類を少しお休みします。 I will take a short break from classifying birds.

小さな紙袋をたくさん付けているように見えるからなんでしょうか。ベーパーバッグの木と名付けられました。 Is it because it looks like it has many small paper bags attached to it that it was named Paperbag Bush?

1ｍぐらいの低木で、ポコポコとフクロをたくさん付けています。昨日のハイキングでたくさん見かけました。 It is a shrub about 1 meter long with many small round bags all over it. I saw many of them on yesterday’s hike.

袋の直径は1-2cmぐらいです。この袋の中には種が4粒入っていて、枯れ落ちた後、風に吹かれて散らばる事ができるという生存能力を持っています。 The diameter of the bag is about 1-2 cm. This bag contains four seeds, which have the ability to be scattered by the wind after they die off.

みんな賢いですね。名前がショボイですが花と袋のコンビネーションは結構愛らしいです。 They are all clever. The name is dull, but the combination of flower and bag is quite lovely.

オオミチバシリの秘密 Secrets Of Greater Roadrunner

オオミチバシリは、新鳥類直下にあるカッコウ目、カッコウ科に分類されています。 Greater Roadrunners are classified in Cuckoidae family under Cuculiformes order, directly under Neoaves.

タイトルが大げさでした。秘密でもなんでも無いです。ただ、オオミチバシリの特徴で私が知らなくて驚いた事を3点挙げたかったんです。 The title was exaggerated. It’s no secret or anything. I just wanted to mention three things about Greater Roadrunners that I didn’t know and was surprised by.

その1：足の指が対趾足（たいしそく）（＊注1参照）であること。対趾足とは、鳥の趾(あしゆび）4趾のうち、第1趾と第4趾は後ろを向いていて、第2趾と第3趾は前を向いていること。この特徴が秘密、その2にもなります。 #1: The toes are Zygodactyl [zī-gə-ˈdak-tᵊl ](see *Note 1). Of the four toes of a bird, the first and fourth toes point backward while the second and third toes point forward. This characteristic is also the secret, #2.

その2：カッコウ科に属していること。全てのカッコウ科は木の上で生活していますが、オオミチバシリが属するアメリカジカッコウ科だけは地面で暮らしています。だから、このグループに入っているのは、ちょっと不思議ですが、多分、カッコウも対趾足であることから同類と見做されているのかもしれません。 # 2: Belonging to the cuckoo family. All cuckoos live in trees, but only the American cuckoo family, to which Roadrunner belongs, lives on the ground. So it is a bit strange that they are in this group, but perhaps they are considered the same species because cuckoos also have Zygodactyl feet.

その3：カッコウ科の鳥のほとんどが托卵をしますが、オオミチバシリはちゃんと自分で温めて、自分で育てます。ちなみに、托卵とは、他の種の鳥の巣に卵を産みつけることです。 # 3: Most of the cuckoo family of birds engage in Brood parasitism, but the Greater Roadrunner properly warms its own eggs and raises them by itself. Incidentally, Brood parasitism is the act of laying eggs in the nests of birds of other species.

私の家の周りでは、オオミチバシリをよく見かけます。その鳴き声がとても特徴的で、近くにいる時はすぐにわかります。以下、前庭に設置したカメラに登場したオオミチバシリのビデオです。 I often see Roadrunners around my house. Their call is very distinctive and I can easily recognize them when they are nearby. Below is a video of a Roadrunner that appeared on a camera installed in my front yard.

また、爬虫類の他に、小さな動物も捕食します。過去にウズラのヒナを食べている所を目撃してしまいました。だから、裏庭で孵化したばかりのウズラたちが食べられないよう注意しています。ただ、それも自然の一部なので、ウズラたちには早く裏庭から出て野生社会で生きていけるようになってもらわなければいけません。（うずらの様子は後ほど、ビデオ作成後にアップします。） They also prey on small animals as well as reptiles. I have witnessed them eating quail chicks in the past. So we are careful not to let the newly hatched quail in our backyard get eaten. But that is part of nature, and we need the quail to get out of our backyard soon so that they can live in the wild. (I’ll post more on the quail later, after I make a video of them.)

ソワソワな季節 Restless Season

忙しくしてました。 I’ve been busy.

そして、まだまだソワソワしてしまう季節は続きます。春ですから。 And the restless season is still going on because it’s spring!

窓の外では興味深いとんでもない事が毎日起きているんです。後ほど、書いていく予定です。 Interesting and outrageous things are happening outside my window every day. I will write about it later.

とりあえず、大きな山場のバードフェスティバルが先週末に終了し、少しホッとしてます。 At any rate, I am a little relieved that the big event, the bird festival, ended last weekend.

でも、引き続き鳥探しは続くし、今週末はアイアンマンのレースがあり、ボランティアとして参加します。https://www.ironman.com/im703-st-george But the bird hunt continues, and this weekend there is an Ironman race, which I will be volunteering for.

いろいろな活動を通してたくさんの人達との出会いがありましたが、残念ながら、書く時間がなくなってしまいました。とりあえず、今日は5月1日なので、節目として、書いておきます。 Through various activities, I have met many people, but I have run out of time to write about them unfortunately. Anyway, today is May 1, so I am writing this as a milestone.

多分、来週あたりから落ち着くかな。　Maybe it will settle down in the next week or so.

あり得ない出来事 Unlikely Event

アマゾン通販大好きです。2日前にも玄関に配達物が届きました。 I love Amazon mail order. I received another delivery at my front door two days ago.

今日の配達は、ECOフレンドリーのトイレットペーパーでした。いつもはCharmin の Ultra Soft というものですが、ふと思いついて自分の体にも環境にも優しそうな物を試してみたくなって買ってみました。 Today’s delivery was ECO friendly toilet paper. I usually buy Charmin Ultra Soft Cushiony Touch Toilet Paper, but I suddenly thought I would like to try something that would be kinder to my body and the environment, so I bought it.

この製品の原材料は竹です。竹の原産国がどこかは不明です。とりあえず柔らかで良さそうですが、使用感は「良い」と「普通」の間ぐらいかな。お値段が高いので今後も続けて使うかどうかは微妙です。The raw material for this product is bamboo. The country of origin of the bamboo is unknown. At any rate, it looks soft and good, but the feeling is somewhere between “good” and “normal”. The price is high, so I am not sure if I will continue to use it in the future.

そんなことを思いながら箱の中を見ると動物の絵がたくさん描かれていました。興奮してトイレットペーパーをドンドン出していくと、 With this in mind, I looked inside the box and saw many pictures of animals. I was so excited and continued taking out more of the toilet paper.

わ〜？？？これ、何？？？ But what? What is this???

携帯が入っていた！ A cell phone was in it!

まさかこの訳のわからない携帯を再利用しなさいというわけでもないと思います。 I don’t think you are asking me to reuse this unknown phone.

あなたならどうしますか？ What would you do?

元の持ち主が知りたくて、充電してみたらパスワードなしに画面が出てきました。でも、簡体中国語でわからない。ということは、中国大陸からやってきた〜！　I tried charging it with the hope of finding out who owned it so I could return it and the screen came up without asking for a password. But I didn’t understand it in simplified Chinese. It means that it came from mainland China~!　

怖くなったので、捨てました。 I got scared and threw it away.

ところで、今日は皆既日食の日です。この為に今バンちゃんはアーカンソー州に行っています。私は既に体験しているし、何日もテントで寝るほど4分間の皆既日食に興奮しないので、60％隠れた太陽の観察でもします。　By the way, today is the day of the total solar eclipse. Ban-chan is in Arkansas right now for this. I’ve already experienced it, and I’m not excited about a 4-minute total solar eclipse enough to sleep in a tent for days, so I’ll just observe the 60% hidden sun.

アメリカエルクのツノ Elk Antlers

先週の土曜日のマーケットも気持ちがいい日でした。バンちゃんのブースです。なんか、とてものどかですね。　Last Saturday’s market was another pleasant day. This is Banchan’s booth. It’s kind of very peaceful.

さて、この日の発見は、こちらのアメリカエルクのツノです。　Now, the great find of the day was this American Elk antler.

トレーナーの犬はピットブルで、とても頑丈な歯を持っています。今までいくつもおもちゃをあげていますが、1時間もしないうちに噛みちぎられています。そこで、この骨です。 My trainer’s dog is a pit bull and has very strong teeth. I have given him several toys and he has chewed them off in less than an hour. So here is the antler.

絶対大丈夫と太鼓判を押されて、買いました。 I bought it because they gave me the stamp of approval that it would be absolutely fine.

2日前にあげたら、まだ見た事がないもののようで、クンクンと鼻をつけて物色していました。さて、来週まで持ち堪えているかどうか楽しみです。 I gave it to him two days ago and he was sniffing and sniffing and rummaging around, like he had never seen anything like it before. Now, I am looking forward to seeing if it holds up until next week.

アメリカエルクのツノはとても立派ですよね。そんなツノも毎年秋にはポロリと落ちて、新しいツノが再び生えてくるようです。1日に1インチ（2.5 cm) のスピードで伸びるそうです。それも驚きですね。　The horn of the American Elk is very magnificent, isn’t it? It is said that the horn grows at a rate of 1 inch (2.5 cm) per day. That is also amazing.

パタゴニア　Patagonia

パタゴニアは南アメリカの南緯40度以南の土地を指した総称です。だからチリとアルゼンチンの両国にまたがっています。　Patagonia is the general term for the land south of the southern 40 degrees in South America. So it straddles both Chile and Argentina.

もう3週間以上前になりますが、トレッドミルでパタゴニアを訪れ、4週間シリーズのパタゴニア ランニング プログラムを完走しました。 More than three weeks ago, I visited Patagonia on the treadmill and completed a four-week series of Patagonia Running.

ただ、2週間目ぐらいに右足の不調を感じ、それも無視して走っていたら、状況はますます悪くなってしまったようです。 However, about the second week, I felt a problem on my right leg, but ignored it, and continued running. The situation seemed to get worse.

股関節あたりが動かし方によって痛みを感じます。すでにX線検査はしてあり、骨に異常はないようです。 I feel pain around my hip joint depending on how I move it. I have already had an X-ray and there seems to be nothing wrong with the bone.

スポーツ専門の医者に会いに行きましたが、不確かな部分があるので、1週間後にMRI検査を受けることになりました。 I went to see a sports specialist, but there was some uncertainty, so I am going to have an MRI scan in a week.

かれこれ、そんな事があったので、その後、走っていません。ま、すでに体の老化は進んでいるので、無理するつもりはありません。でも、走ったり、歩いたりする事は楽しいので、ずっとしていきたいです。だからこそ今、治せるものなら治しておきたいです。 I have not been running since that happened. Well, my body is already aging, so I don’t intend to push myself too hard. But I enjoy running and walking, so I want to keep doing it. That is why I want to fix it now for sure if I can.

さて、パタゴニアですが、今、鳥インフルエンザ（H1N1）がパタゴニアにもやってきてしまったので、旅行者も研究者も立ち入り禁止になっています。こちら、最新のニュースサイト、https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00807-0 So, back to Patagonia, now that the bird flu (H1N1) has come to Patagonia, it is now off limits to both travelers and researchers. 私達は今年の12月に行く予定でしたが、来年に延期されました。船上からの眺めだけであるなら行けそうですが、写真旅行なので、パタゴニアにも南極大陸にも上陸したいです。 We were supposed to go there this December but it has been postponed to next year. If it is just the view from the ship, we could go, but since it is a photo trip, we would like to land in Patagonia and in Antarctica.

あと20ヶ月後には動物たちにも免疫力がついて、元気な姿が見られるようになっていることを祈ります。それまでには、私の足の調子も回復させて鍛えておきます。 I hope that in another 20 months, the animals will be immune and healthy. By then, I will recover my leg and make it even stronger.

牧場の土曜マーケット Saturday Market at the Farm

私たちの街には史跡に指定されている牧場があります。 There is a farm designated as an historic park in our town.

昨日、私達はそこで新しくスタートした土曜のマーケット、サンライズマーケット、に参加しました。　We attended the newly started Saturday market, called the Sunrise Market, there yesterday.

熱気球も空に上がり、牧場の動物たちもいて、とても気持ちがいい日でした。 It was a beautiful day with hot air balloons in the sky and farm animals.

バンちゃんの足は、1月3日に手術してから順調に回復はしているものの、まだ100％ではないです。だから、保護ブーツを履いて設置と撤収も含めると7時間にも及ぶマーケットを乗り切りました。 Banchan’s leg is still not 100%, although he has been recovering well since his surgery on January 3. So he survived the 7-hour market, including setup and tear down, wearing a protective boot.

私は何もすることがなかったので、牧場散策をしました。 I had nothing to do, so I took a walk around the ranch.

新鮮なイチゴを買ったり、ココナッツオイルを買ったり、お昼のサンドイッチやちょっとエキゾチックな食べ物を買ったりと、それなりに楽しかったです。でも、今日の1番の収穫はついに出会えたローカルの蜂蜜です。 It was fun in its own way, buying fresh strawberries, coconut oil, sandwiches for lunch, and a few exotic foods. But the best part of the day was the local honey I finally came across.

まさにこの町のこの牧場の近くで養蜂されているハチミツです。花粉症がひどいので、地元の花からとれているハチミツは最高に効くと言われています。もちろん、ハチミツの効能はそれだけではないので、どのハチミツでもいいでしょう。でも、花粉対策には断然地元産です。早速、今朝のコーヒーにセイロン産シナモンと共にこのハチミツを入れて、美味しかった〜！　This honey is harvested from bees raised near this farm in this town. I have severe hay fever, so honey from local flowers is said to work best for me. Of course, that is not the only benefit of honey, and any honey will do. But for pollen control, it is definitely locally produced honey that is the best. I immediately put this honey in my coffee this morning along with Ceylon cinnamon, and it was delicious~!
