Condor Has Grown Up

– We went to Zion National Park again because our friends visited us from California.

– Of course, we went to see 1K the Condor.  (see my blog about Condor baby) as a highlight.   We can see it only from far away, so we can’t see great detail, but we still could recognize that it has grown up to be a juvenile by the way it acts.  It (we still don’t know the sex yet) wasn’t perched on the rock where we saw it last time anymore.

- It can fly like this already.

- A Condor can fly more than 100 miles a day in search of carrion.  When it becomes a young adult and is able to search for food by itself, we most likely won’t see it here anymore.  I’ll miss you, 1K.

– Can I see you again…?

– By the way, it is saying something, but can’t hear it as we are so far away.

- I see.  It has reached the age where self-assertiveness appears.

When Hoodoos wake up

– Early morning at Bryce Canyon National Park.  Sun is coming up now.

- And Hoodoos are getting ready to wake up.

– Wow, it’s like they are on fire.

- Oh? Heave-ho hop hop, someone is coming up from the hoodoo canyon.

- Ahh, it’s you, Chipmunk. It’s so cold, but doesn’t it feel good in the early morning?

- Photographers are also enjoying the morning.   But I am sorry for you, photographer’s assistant (our friend).  You look cold.

The Fab Four

– I went to The Fab Four‘s concert last night.  Yeah!

– They are as the name represents, a tribute band of The Beatles.

– I didn’t know this, but they are already quite famous.  They have appeared on TV and performed all over the world.

- I was luckily invited to go to a live concert of this rock band.  The picture below is a group shot at the end of the concert.  I am there in the center of the crowd.

Group Photo.

- As you can see, the average age of the audience is quite high.  It’s because it was in 1960’s when the Beatles were active, and a majority of the audience last night were fans from that era. But still they were groovy and singing along.  I think the best part of the concert is the dynamics that is created by the performers and audience together.  This was present for sure last night.

– The concert was held at the Tuacahn Center of Arts.  It’s such a magestic location itself having red cliffs around the amphitheatre.  On top of that, it’s only 10 minutes away from our house.  My friend picked me up at my house because Banchan was out of town, so I didn’t need to drive in the dark.  I was indeed lucky to have such a night last night.

- Below, pictures and video were taken by my cell phone.  The quality is not good, but I hope you can get the atmospher.

Condor Baby

California Condor’s baby hatched in May this year.

- We visited Zion National Park without knowing such big news.  Although we didn’t prepare well for the condor viewing, I must say we were so lucky to see them for the first time, and we enjoyed it fully.

- As I wrote about it yesterday, you need to use a shuttle bus to go places inside the park.  I hopped on the shuttle carrying only 24-70-mm lens originally.  But we needed to go back to our car, spending 1.5 hours round trip, using other shuttles to get the 400mm lens once we saw the condor baby.  (See the map below.)  The baby is standing on a rock against the wall below Angel’s Landing trail.  From Big Bend viewpoint to the baby is about 1500 feet.

- This is a view from the viewpoint.  The nest was made at much higher place, but the chick couldn’t get back to the nest after it fledged.  A ranger told us that it was too soon for the baby to take off.  So, baby is standing about 500 feet below on a rock since then.

- Baby’s name is “1K”.  It’s because it’s the 1000th baby successfully hatched since California Condor Recovery Program started in 1992.  The chick still needs to learn so many things like how to fly, find food, make a nest, etc.

- The parents will bring food back to 1K for the next few months or even up to one year.  Therefore, the chance to see the chick is very high in the next few month.

- We stayed there observing the baby until the sun moved behind the cliff.

- The baby will be alone in such a place throughout upcoming winter.  I really hope he can survive all right.

- Then, suddenly a raven flew over.  Condor Mom immediately started chasing it at full speed.  It was like a National Geographic nature drama in front of us.  As you can see it on the picture, Condor is so big.

- By the way, all condors have numbering tags.  The conservation program can monitor each bird in this way.  We can see number “9” on her wing.  It means she is 409th condor.

What a sight, it is too magnificent!  We totally enjoyed the drama in front of 150 million years of strata on the cliff face.

- On the other hand, it’s funny that some people don’t know how close a condor is to them.  On the left, a human with a camera on Angel’s Landing trail.  On the right, a condor looking at the human.

- The wall of Angel’s landing is one of the attractions at Zion for climbers.

- It looks like this is a woman climber.  I hope she made it to the top. It looks like it is still a long way to go..

強く逞ましく成長していってね!- The baby’s height is about 4 feet and the wingspan is 9 feet.  Please be stronger and live long!

– I want a 1000mm lens!!!

Zion NP in Fall

– We went to see the Fall colors at  Zion National Park last Thursday.

– You must ride a bus to move from one end to the other end of the valley which takes about 40 minutes.  So, it’s quite inconvenient especially if you forget to bring things with you from your car.

- I brought the 100 – 400 mm lens only on the shuttle bus.  So all of my shots were super zoomed landscape images.  At one point, I couldn’t take it any longer not being able to capture gorgeous views. So I borrowed Banchan’s 16 – 35 mm lens for 5 minutes and took a few nice shots with it.

- It was challenging with super zoom lens for the landsapes, but I am happy with the results because I discovered something new.

- You may ask me why I brought only the 100 – 400mm lens to take landscape pictures.  I will write about the reason tomorrow!

2 – Farmer’s Market 2

- We went to the Saint George Farmer’s Market again because we wanted to eat the Chinese steamed buns again.

- I like both Pork and Curry flavors equally.

- “When you talk about Chinese buns, it’s best to eat hot right there, so buy only the amount you can eat right now.” said Banchan.  But I bought a lot.  Of course, it’s best to eat right there when they are fresh, but it’s still good if I freeze them asap.

- By the way, I cooked the Kabocha, Japanese squash that I bought two weeks ago at the Farmer’s market.

ガックリ・・- I know how to cook Kabocha only this way,  Japanese Nimono (simmered dish).  I used less sugar because wanted to have its own sweetness out from Kabocha.  I thought it was very good, but Banchan didn’t even try it.  Sad…

– October is nearly over.  Do you know what it means?  Halloween!!!

– We will attend two parties. The first with our dance studio and the second with the Entrada community.  It’s our first time attending both of them.  It means we will discover something new!

The other side of the ridge

– I hiked to MV Rock alone.

– I might have had too much energy today.  I ran for part of the hike and got to the bench in a half hour.  The red highlighted line was today’s trail.

- The purpose of the hike was to have my picture taken at the bench from home. – I continued along the ridge to Scout Cave after that.

– It felt so good!  This is another shot taken from home right before going down to Scout Cave.

– This is the view from the ridge looking out towards our house.  You can’t compare with Tokyo, but houses and roads are there.

– The other side of the ridge is all open space, untouched nature.

- I realized that nature is right there, so close to our house.  I am glad we moved to this beautiful location.

Encounter while Traveling

– I don’t like traveling alone, but I often find unexpected things and meet interesting people when I do.

- It was my first time staying at a Bed & Breakfast alone.  The hospitality of the staff at the B&B was beyond my expectation, and sharing stories with guests was quite comforting. Despite my low expectation, the trip by myself to Denver became one of my favorite trips to retain in my memory.

MV Rock

– Suddenly, the idea of going closer to MV Rock came to us.  So we did.

– The area around it is covered with sand so it becomes difficult to walk.  I wonder if it’s a place where sands of the Navajo Sandstone layer were carried by wind and piled up.

- There were many footprints on the sands from all the animals’ living around here.

– It’s so quiet.  I could hear only the sound of wind when we got to Gila trail.

– Gila Monster is a gigantic lizard which lives around this area.  I asked Banchan, “What should we do if a Gila monster suddenly appears now?”

- “Take pictures first…” Yes, I will do same, but he said opposite answer to mine, “go closer to it and take more pictures.”  I will definately run away from it.

- See the map of MV Rock and trails below.  We took the orange highlighted trail once before, but we took the green highlighted trail this time.  It’s steeper, but the distance is so much shorter so we could get there in less time.

- With this route, we could get there and back in 3 hours.  MV Rock becomes closer to my soul, as well.

Chinese Curry Bun

– Saint George’s farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning.  It’s fun to see so many things that I have no idea what they are.

– Of course, veggies were there from the farms, so we got onions, avocados, apples, canary melon, and buttercup/kabocha squash.  I assume Banchan has never eaten buttercup squash.  So it will be a challenge, but I will try cooking it the one and only way that I know how, Japanese style.

– I am keeping the Canary melon in a brown bag as the store person told me to do until it get’s ripe.

– A pumpkin pie with cream cheese in it was also good.

– But most of all, the highlight of the day was the Chinese Curry bun/Baozi.  It was so good.  We wanted to get a pork bun but they were sold out already.  So we got curry buns.  I am determined next time to go there earlier and get two pork buns and curry buns each.

– By the way, the husband of the Chinese bun stand is a half Japanese who came from Hawaii.  He still speaks Japanese quite well. This makes the Japanese population in Saint George to be 2.5.  Yay!

– The market will end for this year at the end of this month.  I will miss it.  It seems so early to end, but the nearby Pomegranates were hanging from the trees already so ripe.  So it is time.

Aspen and Images

– I love Aspen trees.  Any images including Aspen look like Fairyland to me.

– Cedar Breaks National Monument, which is the highest park on the Colorado Plateau, is cold even during Summer.  We visited here on June 23rd of this year, and still couldn’t walk trails due to the snow.  Here is a shot I took of Aspen then.

– And this is a shot from two days ago at the same location.

– Aspen aren’t like maple trees whose leaves turn into a gorgeous red.  Instead, Aspen’s autumn peak is yellow.  The leaves whither and turn into orangeish, then fall off.  The summer for Aspen at Cedar Breaks is short.

– I love Aspen even after it has lost all its leaves.  It’s like a snow wonderland before the actual snow of winter.

Just like a Winter scene.

– When the leaves fall, it’s just like cherry blossom petals falling.  The leaves swirl, and dance away with the wind.

– When I close my eyes while listening to the gentle fluttering sound of Aspen leaves, old familiar memories come back to me.  Images including Aspen trees always make my heart very warm.

Found a bluebird

– It’s been near freezing temperatures recently without us even noticing the weather changed.  I saw a new bird that I haven’t seen throughout the summer in my backyard yesterday morning.  Could it be a mockingbird?  But it looks awfully thin and beaten up.  “You better eat more and be healthier before winter comes.  Otherwise, you cannot see the next spring.”

– In any case, I can’t be zoned out so long.  We better be hurry up and go out to look for “Fall” before we miss the fall season completely.

– The driving destination was Cedar Break National Monument.  I will write about my favorite Aspen tree tomorrow, but for today, I want to show you a Bluebird we saw in the freezing temperature yesterday.

– Heit is!

– Sorry!  but most of my shots are like this because it was such a surprise and I wasn’t ready for it.

– I could manage to take a few pictures, though my fingers were numb.

– It is blue, indeed.  This is my first time to take a picture of a grown male Mountain Bluebird.

– It lives in cold and high altitude like in Cedar Breaks.  It became known as the “Bluebird of Happiness” since “The Blue Bird“, written by Maurice Maeterlinck, was published.

– I have a feeling that Banchan’s back and foot pain will go away soon since we have seen such a pretty bluebird!
