ビーバーダム山脈に再び雪が積もりました。大晦日から降り続いていた雨は、山の上では雪になっていたんですね。 The Beaver Dam mountains are covered by snow again. We had rain continuously since new year’s eve here but the rain changed to snow above a certain elevation.

近くのレッドロックの上にも雪がうっすらとかぶっています。こんな景色を目撃したのは、引っ越してきたから2回目です。 The red rock nearby our house also has snow at the top. This is my second time to see such a scene since we moved out here.

買い物に行く前の景色でしたが、帰ってきた時は濃い霧に包まれてしまい、何も見えなくなっていました。 It was visible before I went out for grocery shopping, but I could see nothing when I came back home because they were covered by thick clouds again.

これをラッキーと取るか、残念と取るか、意見が分かれるかもしれません。でも、私は断然ラッキーです。 Some people may say I was lucky to see it, but some may say it was unlucky because I can’t see it any more. But I say I was definitely lucky.

今年もたくさんの選択があって、色々な結果があって、多くの葛藤があるはずです。でも、私はいつもラッキーです。そんな今年を作っていきます。 I will have many choices, results, and conflicts this year as well. But I will be always lucky. I will make it such a year this year.

この地に引っ越してきてから3年以上経ちました。毎日見える私たちの岩、MVロックは毎日私たちを励ますように見守ってくれていました。 It’s been more than three years since we moved to this place. Our rock, MV rock, that we see everyday protected us and encouraged us since then.

今年最後の日のMVロックは雨のため、雲の中に隠れていました。 MV rock was hidden in thick clouds due to the rain today, the last day of the year.

時折姿を見せてもほんの一瞬だけ。 Every once in a while, it revealed its face but it was only for an instant.

そこで、過去に撮ったMVロックの写真を探してみました。 So I searched the MV rock images I took in the past.

2021年の1月、雪が降った時。 Snow covered MV rock in January 2021.

2020年、6月。 In June 2020.

そして、引っ越してきたばかりの頃、2019年7月の夕暮れ。 Lastly, an image around sunset time in July 2019. It was around the time we moved here.

来年も一緒に心が震えるほどの思い出をつくろうね！　Let’s make many more marvelous memories together in next year as well!

冬の贈り物 A Winter Present

雪の中からひょっこり現れたあなたは、誰？ Who are you popping out from the snow?

ハエトリツグミさん。初めまして！　ところで、何か持ってますね。何ですか？ Oh, you are a Townsend’s Solitaire bird. It’s nice to meet you!

ウウァー、キレイ！水晶みたい。 How pretty that is! It’s just like a crystal ball.

あなたが冬の贈り物だったんですね。雪の中でキラキラ光ってます。 You look delightful shining in the snow. I got it. You, yourself is the winter present for us.

ありがとう！ザイオン国立公園の西側でもらったプレゼント。 Thank you for such a lovely present from the west side of Zion National Park.

ウェストザイオン West Zion

雨のため、ハンキングが中止となり、思いついてザイオン国立公園の西側に行ってきました。 We went to the west side of Zion National Park spontaneously because our group hike was cancelled due to rain.

私の好きなレッドビュートが煙っていました。 My favorite Red Butte was smoky.

更に奥へ向かいます。 We went on further.

雪が止んでいて、ラッキーでした。 We were lucky that the snow stopped.

渓谷の中とは違う美しさです。 West Zion has a different beauty from the valley.

木々が嬉しそうに踊ってます。 The snow covered trees were dancing happily.

それも束の間、霧が立ち込めてきました。 But then, the weather changed quickly and the fog set in.

もう何も見えなくなってきたので引き返すことにしました。 We couldn’t see much any longer, so we decided to go back home.

雷もゴロゴロ鳴り始めました。 The thunder started rumbling, too.

雷の写真を撮るのが好きなバンちゃんは、名残惜しそうでしたが、フロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雹の攻撃に遭い、早々に退散しました。 Banchan who loves to take lightning pictures seemed sad to leave there, but super strong hail poured onto our car, so we left there quickly.

ザイオンの西の景色は、私たちをホクホクさせてくれました。でも、実はもっとホクホクするものに遭遇しましたが、その話は明日書きます。 West Zion pleased us and we were content with it. But actually, we received a big surprise from there. I will write about it tomorrow.

サイバークリーニング Cyber Cleaning

サイバー空間の掃除をしています。10年以上溜め込んだサイバー上のファイルを整理整頓するのは並大抵の作業ではありません。 I am in the middle of cleaning my cyber space. I don’t even want to know how long it will take to go through everything and tidy up because there are more than 10 years worth of accumulated information and files.

一つのサイトの8,000以上のファイルを、なんと900以下まで減らし、分類し直しました。 One of my sites had over 8,000 files, but now it is less than 900. They are nicely sorted.

また、アカウントも二つ、閉じました。軽くなったようで、気持ちいい！ I also closed two accounts for internet web sites. It made me feel so light and good.

昨日の朝焼け Yesterday’s morning glow

もう残り少ない年末ですが、これが私の年末の大掃除。心身共に、来年から爽やかスタートを切りたいです。 I plan to tidy up my cyber space as much as I can until the last moment of this year. This is my end of the year cleaning, so that I can start the new year with a fresh mind.

パイ生地で包んだカマンベール Camembert En Croute

友人宅のクリスマスディナー用に用意しました。たまらなく美味しくできた前菜、パイ生地で包んだカマンベールです。 This is Camembert en Croute I baked for a Christmas gathering at our friend’s house. It was irresistibly delicious.

オーブンの温度がなかなか上がらなくて、でも時間はどんどん無くなって焦りまくり。だから友人の家の最新オーブンで30分焼いたカマンベールです。 I was quite frustrated though, because my kitchen oven didn’t go up high enough quickly, yet my time was also running out quickly. So, this was baked in our friend’s new oven.

丸ごとカマンベールを二つ。それを4等分にして、その間にドライフルーツ、ナッツ、それにローズマリーを入れてパイ生地でラップして出来上がり。 The preparation was quite simple. I used two chunks of Camembert cheese, cut both chunks in half horizontally. Then I sandwiched chopped dried apricots, cherries, nuts, and rosemary leaves. After that, I wrapped it up with pie dough. That’s it.

8人分の予定でしたが、4人でペロリと食べてしまいました。 It’s supposed to serve 8 people, but the four of us finished it so quick.

中に何を入れても美味しくできそう。パイ生地を作るのが面倒なだけで、あとは簡単。絶対また作ります。およばれパーティーに持って行く「定番の一皿」にしてもいいかも。 It seems that anything can go with Camembert. As long as you have a pie dough ready, the rest is simple. I will bake it again for sure. I may bring this dish from now on to any party that I may be invited to.

Hike 38: 白い岩礁 White Reef

5.5km と100ｍ以下の登りの短いハイキングでした。It was a 3.4 mile loop, 300’ gain, short hike.

早朝、まだ朝日が差し込んでいなかった丘ですが、あっという間にオレンジ色に輝いてきました。 Although the red rock hadn’t yet gotten morning light when we arrived at the trailhead, it changed so quickly and brilliantly into orange color once the light hit the rocks.

白く連なった岩礁がわかるでしょうか。長く長く連なっていました。 Can you see the white reef rock? It was extending very far in both directions.

パインバレー山脈 Pine Valley Mountains

買い物の帰り道、パインバレー山脈が久しぶりに顔を見せてくれました。 On the way back home from grocery shopping, the Pine Valley Mountains came out of the clouds, and showed her face.

標高 3,000m 以上の山々が連ねているので、冬はたいてい雲の中です。200万年前にできた、世界一大きい一枚岩のラコリスでできています。 It’s covered by clouds most of the time during the winter because many peaks are over 10,000 feet. It was formed 20 million years ago and is the largest laccolith in the world.

一度登りましたが、美しい姿を見て、来年、再び登ろうと思いました。 We hiked up one of the peaks once before, but the beautiful view invited me again. I want to hike there again next year.

お地蔵さん Jizo statues

たくさんのお地蔵さんの集会のようで、面白い。 笠地蔵のおとぎ話を思い出しました。 They looked like many Jizo statues (see Note 1) at a convention. The scene reminded me of a folktale in Japan, Kasajizo. (see Note 2)

Note 1: You can see Jizo statues along country roads throughout Japan. They are guardian deities of children in Japan. They also protect travelers. Long ago, when we didn’t have transportation like cars and trains, people couldn’t visit temples. Therefore, Jizo statues were made nearby their homes. You often see them wearing red hats and bibs. It used to be believed that they would ward off evil. For more information, see this web site.

Note 2: The moral of the folktale is that pure kindness and generosity without expecting any reward will be rewarded. Kasa is translated as “Straw hat”. Here is an English version of the story at YouTube.

リンザークッキー Linzer Cookies

マーサのリンザークッキーは見た目がとてもクリスマスっぽいのでチャレンジしてみました。 I tried baking the Linzer cookies from Martha Stewart’s recipe because it looked very Christmasy.

フードプロセッサーがなかったので、ブレンダーで代用したり、ハンドミキサーにしたり、結局、最終的には手でこねることになり、キッチンは久しぶりに大混乱となりました。 My kitchen became such a huge mess for the first time in a long time. I didn’t understand why I needed to use a food processor for this. Since I don’t own one, I used my blender. It didn’t work at all, then switched to a hand mixer, but that didn’t work either. So, I switched to using my hands only at the end.

フードプロセッサーを使う必要なし。最初からハンドミキサーでスタートしていいたらもっとすんなり出ていたことでしょう。 I still think I didn’t need a food processer for this. If I started with hand mixer from the very beginning, it would have been much smoother.

そのほかにも様々なハプニングで、ドッと疲れましたが、なんとかリンザークッキー完成まで辿り着きました。ローストしたアーモンドの香ばしい香りが私のストレスを拭い去ってくれました。お味もそれなりに美味。 I encountered many other tool related problems. All in all, it was quite a challenge bake, and it made me so tired. But at the end, the toasted almonds aroma took away my stress. The nutty flavor added also made the cookie pretty good.

36個できるはずが13個しかできませんでした。クッキーのサイズか厚さの違いでしょうか。だから、一軒にアプリコットとラズベリーを一個ずつ。 Although the recipe says I could make 35 cookies, I made only 13 of them. It must be the size and the thickness of the cookie differences. I wrapped one raspberry and one apricot per household as Christmas presents.

ご近所様への年末ギフトのペパーミントブラウニーが、まだ冷蔵庫の中にあった！ので、それと共に、何がなんでも今週中に配ります。明日、明後日しかないよ・・・ You won’t believe this but I still had my peppermint brownies in my refrigerator although they are ready to go. I have only two more days left till Christmas day!!! I will deliver them no matter what together with the Linzer cookies.

首の調整 Adjusting Neck

ディコンプレッション セラピーを始めました。手術しないで脊椎の痛みを治す治療方法です。 I started having Decompression therapy. It’s a method to cure the cervical vertebrae pain without surgery.

合計20回で背骨の上７個、頚椎を伸ばすというよりも、その間の椎間板を伸ばし圧迫を解放します。伸びてきたらオゾンを注入し、血流を良くするということらしいです。来年1月末までに完了の予定です。 By stretching the cervical vertebrae (decompressing), it releases the pressure on the disks. Once pressure is released on the disks, ozone gas will be injected for better blood circulation. The therapy will complete by the end of January next year.

私の場合、C5とC6に変形があり、その間の椎間板が圧迫されていて、痛みを感じているらしいです。 For my case, C5 and C6 vertebrae have minor deformations. So the disks around there are compressed. Therefore, I feel pain all the time.

定年退職前はコンピュータの前に座っぱなしでしたから、その頃からピリピリとした痛みがありました。 Before retiring, I was sitting in front of computers all the time everyday, and had aches for many years.

この治療に期待します。 I have high hopes for this.

Hike 37: ヒーラ トレイル Gila Trail

ヒーラ トレイルはスノーキャニオン州立公園内で多分最も長いトレイルです。 Gila trail is one of the longest trails in Snow Canyon State Park.

私たちはすでに南半分を歩いているので、今回は北の入り口から入り、日没までの2時間、往復6.5kmを歩きました。 We have already hiked the south end and middle of the trail before. This time, we started hiking from the north. We had only two hours until sunset. It was a 4 mile roundtrip hike.

もう毎日氷点下の日が続きます。だから日陰の雪は溶けません。 The snow on the trail hasn’t melted in shady places because we have had below freezing nights and cold daytime temperatures recently.

チョイアが光を浴びて気持ちよさそう。 A Cholla cactus looks happy getting sunlight.

遠くには雪で覆われたパイバレーマウンテンが見えます。 We saw the snow covered Pine Valley Mountains from a far distance.

渓谷内はもう暗くなっていましたが、それでもいい眺めです。 The inside of the canyon was already dark, but the view was still great to me.

帰り道もルンルンと半分走っていました。でも景色に見惚れて、前のめりにドーンと転んでしまいました。 I was enjoying it very much simply being there. I was running on and off, but fell forward onto the ground hard while looking at the fascinating view.

カメラを持っていなくてよかった！ I am glad I didn’t have my camera.

携帯が一番大きな打撃を受け、右のつま先と膝と手のひらを打撲しました。 My cell phone got the most damage, and I got a bruise on my right toe, knee, and palm.

そんな怪我をしてもなお、楽しい夕暮れのハイキングでした。 It was *still* a fun sunset hike although I hurt myself.
