MV Rock

思い立って、MV Rock に接近して見た。 – Suddenly, the idea of going closer to MV Rock came to us.  So we did.

わー、こんな砂地なんだ。歩きにくい。ナバホ砂岩層の砂のたまり場みたい。 – The area around it is covered with sand so it becomes difficult to walk.  I wonder if it’s a place where sands of the Navajo Sandstone layer were carried by wind and piled up.

足跡がたくさんあるけど、みんなここに住む動物たちのものだね。- There were many footprints on the sands from all the animals’ living around here.

Gila （ヒーラと発音する）トレイルまで来ると、シンとして風の音だけが聞こえる。 – It’s so quiet.  I could hear only the sound of wind when we got to Gila trail.

ヒーラモンスターは（日本語でアメリカ毒トカゲと呼ばれる）まさにこの地に住んでいる巨大なトカゲです。「突然でて来たらどうしようか？」とバンちゃんに聞いて見ました。 – Gila Monster is a gigantic lizard which lives around this area.  I asked Banchan, “What should we do if a Gila monster suddenly appears now?”

「まず写真を撮って・・」ここまでは同じでしたが、その後は逃げる私とは反対に、「もっと近づいて写真を撮る」が彼の答えでした。- “Take pictures first…” Yes, I will do same, but he said opposite answer to mine, “go closer to it and take more pictures.”  I will definately run away from it.

MV Rock と回りのトレイルマップです。今回は緑色でハイライトされたパラダイスリム を登って見ました。前回はオレンジ色のタートルウォール。急な道だけど、距離が短くなり、それだけ早くたどり着く事ができるんです。- See the map of MV Rock and trails below.  We took the orange highlighted trail once before, but we took the green highlighted trail this time.  It’s steeper, but the distance is so much shorter so we could get there in less time.

このルートなら3-4時間あれば往復できる事がわかりました。MV Rock が心の中でも近くなったよ。- With this route, we could get there and back in 3 hours.  MV Rock becomes closer to my soul, as well.

カレー中華まん – Chinese Curry Bun

土曜の朝のファーマーズマーケット。わけのわからないものがたくさんあって、それが楽しい。 – Saint George’s farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning.  It’s fun to see so many things that I have no idea what they are.

もちろん、農園から野菜も運ばれて来ているので、私たちは玉ねぎ、アボカド、りんご、カナリアメロン、そしてカボチャを買いました。多分バンちゃんはカボチャを食べた事がないので、私の唯一知っている調理法、和風で挑戦してみます。 – Of course, veggies were there from the farms, so we got onions, avocados, apples, canary melon, and buttercup/kabocha squash.  I assume Banchan has never eaten buttercup squash.  So it will be a challenge, but I will try cooking it the one and only way that I know how, Japanese style.

カナリアメロンはお店のお兄さんの指示通り、紙袋の中で熟成するまで眠らせてあります。 – I am keeping the Canary melon in a brown bag as the store person told me to do until it get’s ripe.

パンプキンクリームパイも美味しかった！ – A pumpkin pie with cream cheese in it was also good.

でも、ハイライトは何と言ってもカレー中華まん。めっちゃ美味しかった。あいにく、ポークは売り切れ。次回は断然もっと早く行ってポークとカレーを二つづつゲットするぞ！ – But most of all, the highlight of the day was the Chinese Curry bun/Baozi.  It was so good.  We wanted to get a pork bun but they were sold out already.  So we got curry buns.  I am determined next time to go there earlier and get two pork buns and curry buns each.

ところで、中華まん屋さんのご主人はハワイ出身の半分日本人。日本語も上手に話せていました。これで、この町に日本人が2.5人いるという事がわかりました！ – By the way, the husband of the Chinese bun stand is a half Japanese who came from Hawaii.  He still speaks Japanese quite well. This makes the Japanese population in Saint George to be 2.5.  Yay!

このマーケットは10月末で終了です。寂しいな。ザクロが駐車場の横でたわわに実っていました。やっぱり、今年のマーケットはもうおしまいなんだ。 – The market will end for this year at the end of this month.  I will miss it.  It seems so early to end, but the nearby Pomegranates were hanging from the trees already so ripe.  So it is time.

アスペンのある景色 – Aspen and Images

アスペンが大好き。アスペンのある景色はどれもおとぎの国の世界のように見えてくる。 – I love Aspen trees.  Any images including Aspen look like Fairyland to me.

コロラド高原の中で最も高度の高いCedar Breaks 国定公園は、夏でも寒い。前回来たのは6月23日。まだ雪があり、トレイルは通行止だった。その時のアスペンは、これ。 – Cedar Breaks National Monument, which is the highest park on the Colorado Plateau, is cold even during Summer.  We visited here on June 23rd of this year, and still couldn’t walk trails due to the snow.  Here is a shot I took of Aspen then.

そして、これが一昨日の同じ場所。 – And this is a shot from two days ago at the same location.

アスペンは紅葉のように綺麗な赤い葉の時期がない。黄色がピークでその後は枯葉色のオレンジ色になって散っていく。Cedar Breaks のアスペンの夏は短い。 – Aspen aren’t like maple trees whose leaves turn into a gorgeous red.  Instead, Aspen’s autumn peak is yellow.  The leaves whither and turn into orangeish, then fall off.  The summer for Aspen at Cedar Breaks is short.

散り終わったアスペンも素敵。冬の前の雪景色のよう。 – I love Aspen even after it has lost all its leaves.  It’s like a snow wonderland before the actual snow of winter.

散りゆく時はまるで春の桜のよう。風に乗って葉が舞い踊る。 – When the leaves fall, it’s just like cherry blossom petals falling.  The leaves swirl, and dance away with the wind.

サラサラと風になびく音を聞きながら目を閉じると、懐かしいイメージが浮かんでくる。アスペンのある景色はどれも私の心を暖かくしてくれる。 – When I close my eyes while listening to the gentle fluttering sound of Aspen leaves, old familiar memories come back to me.  Images including Aspen trees always make my heart very warm.

ブルーバードがいた – Found a bluebird

いつの間にか気温が下がり、最低気温が摂氏0度に近くなっていました。昨日の朝、裏庭に見慣れない鳥が来ていました。モッキングバードかな？でも、やせ衰えています。「冬に向けてもっと元気になっていないと越冬できないよ。」と心配します。 – It’s been near freezing temperatures recently without us even noticing the weather changed.  I saw a new bird that I haven’t seen throughout the summer in my backyard yesterday morning.  Could it be a mockingbird?  But it looks awfully thin and beaten up.  “You better eat more and be healthier before winter comes.  Otherwise, you cannot see the next spring.”

それはさておき、うかうかして入られません。秋を見逃す前に秋探しに出かけなければ！ – In any case, I can’t be zoned out so long.  We better be hurry up and go out to look for “Fall” before we miss the fall season completely.

向かった先はCedarbreak 国定公園。大好きなアスペンの秋は明日書きます。今日は、氷点下の中で見つけたブルーバードです。  – The driving destination was Cedar Break National Monument.  I will write about my favorite Aspen tree tomorrow, but for today, I want to show you a Bluebird we saw in the freezing temperature yesterday.

ジャジャ〜ン！  – Heit is!

失礼しました。まさかの出会い。カメラの準備ができていなかったので、こんなのばっかり。 – Sorry!  but most of my shots are like this because it was such a surprise and I wasn’t ready for it.

指が凍りつく中、ようやく撮れた数枚です。 – I could manage to take a few pictures, though my fingers were numb.

確かに、青い。成長したオスのマウンテンブルーバードは初めてです。 – It is blue, indeed.  This is my first time to take a picture of a grown male Mountain Bluebird.

こんなに寒い高所に住んでいるんですね。日本語ではムジルリツグミと言うらしいですが、メーテルリンクの「青い鳥」で有名ですよね。 – It lives in cold and high altitude like in Cedar Breaks.  It became known as the “Bluebird of Happiness” since “The Blue Bird“, written by Maurice Maeterlinck, was published.

これで、きっと早くバンちゃんの背中や足が治りそうだよ! – I have a feeling that Banchan’s back and foot pain will go away soon since we have seen such a pretty bluebird!

 

 

ディスコナイト – Disco Night

ディスコボールライトがぐるぐる回っているとじっとしていられなくなるのは、私だけでしょうか？  – Is it only me whose body starts moving when a disco ball starts spinning?

土曜の夜、Entrada のクラブハウスで Saturday Night Fever ディスコパーティーがありました。 – There was a Saturday Night Fever disco party at Entrada’s clubhouse last Saturday.

ハッスル大好きカップルと一緒に。 – Together with a couple who love to hustle.

みなさん、ノリノリでダンスフロアはすぐに満杯になりました。バンちゃんの背中の回復がまだということもあり、ハッスルはあまり踊らないんですが、久しぶりに体を動かせて大満足です。 – The dance floor became full immediately as the music started.  We don’t dance Hustle so much especially since Banchan’s back is still not completely recovered, but it was sooo fun shaking and moving my body.

予期せぬことは突然起こるものです。突然起こるから予期せぬ事になるので重複した表現ですね。そんな事件が起こりました。 – An unexpected thing happened suddenly.  Of course, it’s called “unexpected” as it happened suddenly. In any case, such an incident had happened.

美しい日本人女性二人が会場に出現した！ – Two beautiful Japanese ladies suddenly appeared at the party!

日本人は私一人だけかと思ってましたから、奇跡の遭遇です。一人はここに家を所有していらっしゃる事がわかりました。ここには年に1ヶ月ほどしかいらっしゃらないそうです。なぜなら、世界を股にかけてお仕事をバリバリされているので、ＮY、ロンドン、東京のそれぞれに家を持っていらっしゃる。私には想像がつかないランフスタイルです。彼女たちは翌日すでに飛行機に飛び乗って、それぞれの地に向かわれました。 – Because I thought I was the only Japanese in the Entrada community, it was truly a shocking encounter.  One of them owns a house here, but lives here only one month during the year because she and her husband also own houses in Tokyo, London, and New York due to their worldwide businesses.  Their lifestyles are beyond my imagination.  They have already left on a plane for business travel.

またぜひ会いましょうと言ってお別れしました。本当に、ぜひね！！！ – We said “fairwell” to each other agreeing to meet again in the future.  Yes, for sure indeed, meet again!!!

Toe Trail

雲が流れている日に Toe というトレイル を歩いた。  – We hiked the Toe trail in a day that clouds were moving in the sky.

Ivinsという隣町からTuacahnという野外劇場への道に抜ける Toe という短いトレイル。バンちゃんの背中の手術後の経過を待ちながら少しづつ体力作りができたらいいと願う。  – The trail is a short trail that starts from Ivins and leads to the road to get to the Tuacahn Theatre.  After Banchan’s back surgery,  we are patiently waiting for the recovery.  The recovery is slow but his physical strength is better day by day.

このトレイルで陸ガメがよく見られるというウワサを聞いて、今回で2回目。でも、シンとしてカメどころか鳥もあまり見かけなかった。冬眠に入る前に見たかったけど、もう時間切れでしょうか。  – It’s been said that tortoises have seen on this trail.  So it was the second attempt for us, but unfortuanatly we had no luck seeing any tortoises.  Actually there weren’t very many animals at all. It was simply very quiet.   I am afraid we will run out of time before the tortoises go down deep in the ground for hybernation this year.  

雲の隙間から流れ出る太陽の光、それを受けた稜線は輝き、空高く導かれていた。 – Beams of sunshine breaking through the clouds shined down on the ridge.  It was as if those beams of sunshine were coaxing the ridge higher and higher into the sky.

久しぶりのランドスケープ写真と散歩、のどかに過ぎました。It was simply peaceful.  We casually walked and stopped from time to time to take landscape pictures.  The time passed by very quietly.

スイスの日 – Swiss Day

先週末、隣町サンタクララでスイスの日のパレードがありました。  – There was a Swiss day parade in Santa Clara, the town next to Saint George.

私のヘアスタイリストのブリトニーがキャンディーを配るからぜひ来てとのことで、行って来ました。  – My hairstylist Britney insisted I should be there because she would be tossing out candies from her float to spectators.  So we went.

ローカルのパレードはいいですね。まだ引っ越して来てから日が浅い私たちにも、数人の顔を確認することができました。みんなのんびりしていて、楽しそう。  – I felt comfortable and could easily relate to the parade and people. That’s because I could recognize a few people’s faces, even though it has been only 5 months since we’ve moved in to this area, and everyone was very relaxed.  I think that’s why I like local parades.

祇園祭はチマキをばらまきますが、ここではキャンディーや水、果物など、ありとあらゆるものがばらまかれます。だから沿道の子供達は忙しい。  – The famous Gion festival in Japan tossed out “Chimaki (a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves)” to  the spectators.  On this parade, all sorts of things were tossed out. Mainly candies, but also bottles of water, apples, etc.  All the kids were so busy catching or picking them up.

ローカルとはいえ、催し物が盛りだくさんです。19年前にスイス人の末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会はのメンバーによってスタートされたそうです。だからスイスの日なんですね。  – Even though it is only a local event, there were so many exhibits, entertainments, and events.  The annual event began 19 years ago by Swiss members of LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).  I see, that’s why it’s called “Swiss Day.”

夏が終わりスコットが消えた – Summer and Scott are gone

強い風が吹いていました。サソリのスコットは風を避けるためにジャバザハットの横の方に避難していました。冬になったらどうするのだろうと思っていたところで す。  – We had strong winds these past few days.  Our scorpion, Scott, moved to the side of the water-fountain, Jabba the Hutt, to avoid cold winds.  I was wondering what he would do when the winter comes.

翌朝、ジャバの回りを丁寧に探しましたが、スコットの姿はどこにもありませんでした。いつかこんな日が来るとは思っていましたが、実際に来てみると、予想以上に悲しい。 – Sadly, the day came.  We looked for Scott everywhere around Jabba, but had no luck finding him.  I mentally prepared for the last day, but it’s still very sad.

暗闇でもブラックライトを当てるとこんな風に見えます。With a blacklight, you can see it even in the dark.

夏が終わったからサソリのスコットがいなくなったのか、スコットがいなくなったから夏が終わったのか?  – I wonder what the relationship is between summer and Scott.  The summer has gone and, or is it because Scott has gone?

水面を見つめるようにじっとしていたのでナルシストかと思いました。Because he positioned himself to see his own reflection on the water surface, I thought he is a narcist.

念のため、ジャバの回りのアイビーを刈り取って見ました。それでも見つかりませんでした。- Just in case, I cleared the Ivy around Jabba, but no luck finding him.

Before

様々なウェブサイトによると、冬は暗く暖かい場所を見つけて冬眠すると言われています。ふーむ・・・  – According to websites, Scorpions hibernate by moving into a dark and warm place.  Where could he find around here?

After

まさか家の中に入って来てるなんてことないと思いますが、少し気になる。先日のタランチュラがどうやってベッドルームに入って来たのか、未だに不明だし、トカゲはどうやって家の中から脱出したのかも不明です。  – I hope Scott did not come inside our house.  We liked watching him on top of Jabba, but definitely not inside!!!  I can’t remove this possibility 100% because we still don’t know how the Tarantula came inside the bedroom, plus it’s still unknown how the lizard disappeared from the tightly closed room.

日本の諺だけじゃなく、私の尊敬する例の「アルケミスト」で有名なパウロ コエーリョも言っていますね。「2度あることは3度ある。」- Not only is there a saying in Japan, but Paulo Coelho who I respect and is known for the book “Alchemist”, is also saying “Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time.”

ない、ない、絶対にない〜！    No! Not for this case, it won’t happen!

夏の終わりを告げるためでしょうか。ベッドルームの脇、名前がわからない低木がラベンダー色の花を一斉に咲かせました。夏の終わりに最後の力を振り絞っているようです。 – We still don’t know the name of the bush right by our bedroom window.  It suddenly started blooming so gorgeously as if it used the last bit of mighty power to show off its beauty at the end of summer.でも、1-2週間ほどで散っていきました。秋バージョンの桜みたいな咲き方ですね。 – But the petals fell off onto the ground in 1-2 weeks.  It is like the Autumn version of Cherry blossom the way it came and went so quickly.

 

夏が過ぎようとしている – Summer is almost over

セーターが欲しい朝夕の冷え込み、もう最高気温 27 度を超える日はない。  – I need a sweater in both mornings and evenings these days, since the high temperatures these days are in the 70’s or 80’s.

夏が過ぎ去ろうとしている。ちょっと寂しい。  – The summer is ending.  It gives me a little melancholy feel.

私のオフィスの窓に映った夕日。A sunset image reflected on my office window.

ユタ州セイントジョージでの初めての夏。セミの抜け殻は夏中たくさん見て来た。  – It was the first summer for us at this gorgeous place in Saint George, Utah.  I saw many Cicadas’ husks during summer.

大きく成長した虫たちは鳥にたくさん食べられて、だんだん静まって来た。  – It’s so much quieter these days as many grown bugs are eaten by birds.

わーい、これは、きっとカリフォルニアキング蛇のジェイク（9月9日のジェイクのブログ）の抜け殻にちがいない。私の仕事部屋の窓の外に置き去られていたから。  – Oh my gosh!  This must be Jake the snake’s skin that he shed while molting, which he left right outside of my office window.  (Jake is a California Kingsnake, see my Sept. 9 post.)  

すごいですね。なるほど、ここはお腹の部分ね。  – Wow…!  This part must have covered Jake’s tummy.

よくもまあ、抜け殻はこんなに完全で残るものなんですね。これ、一体どうしたらいいでしょう。ジェイクからのプレゼント？  – It’s amazing that the shell could keep its form so well after the snake molted.  Anyway, what am I going to do with it now?  Is this a present from Jake?  

ジェイク、来年の夏も会えるかな？  – Hey  Jake, can I see you again next summer?

世界一大きいハチ – The Biggest Wasp in the World

Tarantula Hawk、日本語でオオベッコウバチと言うそうです。

朝のコーヒーを飲みながらぼんやりと前庭を眺めていると、鳥にしては小さすぎる「何か」がデサートウィローの木のあたりを飛び回っているのに気がつきました。急いでカメラを持ち出してみると、この巨大なハチ。  – With a cup of morning coffee, we were admiring the pretty view in the front yard.  Then we realized that a large “something”, but not as large as a bird, was flying around the Desert Willow tree.  Quickly bringing out our cameras, we found this gigantic wasp.

ハミングバードが威嚇しに来ても平然としています。  – It was so calm, even when a hummingbird threatened it.

私の頭上近くにもブーンと飛んで来ました。しゃがんで避けただけでしたが、後で調べたら、ぞ〜と、怖くなりました。なんとタランチュラを見つけると好んで攻撃しに行って、勝率は100％に近いと言われています。タランチュラは殺されずに巣に運び込まれ、卵を産み付けます。幼虫は生きたままのタランチュラを食べて成長すると言われています。わ〜ぁ〜、怖〜っ。（詳しいことはウィキペディアを是非読んでください。）ベッドルームにいたタランチュラ、どうしてるかな・・・  – It flew around me once.  I just casually avoided it then, but later was filled with fear after I learned online what it was.  It especially likes tarantulas.  Whenever it finds a tarantula, it attacks.  The winning ratio over them is nearly 100%.  Tarantula is then carried into Tarantula Hawk’s nest while it’s paralized, and lay a egg inside the Tarantula.  The Tarantula Hawk’s larva grows up by eating the live tarantula.  No kidding!  (read Wikipedia for more detail.)  I wonder how the tarantula in our bedroom survived out there.

毒は持っていませんが、刺されたら痛〜いリストの二番目に位置するそうです。次回見かけたら絶対逃げる。ちなみに、痛いリスト一番はサシハリアリだそうです。  – Although the Tarantula Hawk isn’t poisonous, it ranks second place in the most painful sting list.  I will absolutely run away from it the next time.  By the way, the number one painful sting is the Bullet ant.

タランチュラ – Tarantula

昨日は小さいクモでしたが、今日は大きいクモの話です。  – It was a story of a small size spider yesterday, but today is about a large spider.

タランチュラ – Tarantula

ある晩のこと。すでに晩ちゃんは床に就いていました。私ももうそろそろ寝ようとベッドルームに一歩踏み入れた瞬間、見慣れない変なものが目に飛び込んで来ました。理解するまで1-2秒、その後、絶叫。  – It happened in the late evening.  Banchan was already in bed.  When I stepped in to the room, I thought something strange was there.  It took me 1-2 seconds to comprehend what was going on.  Then, I couldn’t help it, but simply screamed as loud as I could.

絵の真下にベッドがあります。 – Our bed is right below the painting.

バンちゃんは何が何だかわからず私の顔を見て「なに？！」  – Banchan didn’t understand what’s wrong with me. He said “What?  Speak!”

私はそれを指差して、「タランチェラ〜！！！」  – “Tarantula!!!” I said while pointing at it.

すったもんだの果てに捕獲、とりあえず容器ごと外に置いておくことにして、翌日空き地に放してあげました。  – After much difficulty, Banchan captured it in a container, kept the container outside overnight, just in case, then released it at a nearby open space on the next day.

かなり怒っていましたねー。容器を取り外したあと、バンちゃんの方をめがけて結構なスピードで接近して来ていましたから。  – I think it was quite quite upset.  After removing the container, it started coming toward Banchan with pretty good speed.

オスは命をかけてメスとメイトします。その後メスに食べられてしまうんですね〜。種の保存のためなのか・・・一方メスは25年以上も生きるようです。  – The male tarantula risks his life while attempting to mate with a female.  His fate is to be eaten by the female after that.  Wow, that’s the way it goes for the Species preservation…?  On the other hand, females can live more than 25 years.

クモは小さくても大きくても苦手だ〜！  – I really don’t like spiders regardless of the size, small or large!!!

飛び跳ねるクモ？ Jumping Spider

英語名は Red-backed Jumping Spider です。素早く動き、飛び跳ねているように見えます。
ハエトリグモの一種で、日本語名はわかりません。「赤い背中のハエトリグモ」としておきます。 この写真では四つしか見えませんが、目が八つもあるらしい。 – The English name is Red-back jumping Spider.  It moves so fast that it looks like jumping.  Although only four eyes are visible with this picture, it’s said that it has eight eyes.

1 cm もないほど小さいのに真っ赤な背中だと毒グモなのかと思いますが、そうではないらしいので安心しました。  – It’s so small, less than 0.5 inches, yet has a showy red back.  So I thought it’s poisonous, but thank god, it’s not.

でも、クモはやっぱり苦手だ〜。  – But still, I am not fond of spiders.
