朝、7時過ぎ。窓の外が大変なことになっていた。7 o’clock in the morning, I saw an unbelievable sight outside the window yesterday.
自然の不思議と美しさに感謝。I simply thanked the mysterious beauty of nature.

5K: 平均時間 Average Time

当然優勝を目指します。ウソ、ウソ、嘘です！ でも平均値ぐらいで終了できたら良いと思っています。 Needless to say, I aim for the first place. Just kidding!!! But I want to finish it in average time.
このチャートでは、初級で私の年齢だと44.5分 から 47 分の間にゴールすれば平均値ということになります。 According to this chart, I should finish between 44.5 minute – 47 minutes as a beginner.
前回の私の記録。残園ながら5kmの通過地点での証拠写真はないんですが、45分になってなかったんです。つまり、初めて45分を切ったことになります。トレッドミルで上り坂があまりない状態ですけど。でも、レースで走れる予感がしてきました。This is my last run. I remember that I reached 5k before the 45 minute mark. It’s the first time I broke 45 minutes!!! Although the distance climb is not much, I still did it. Now I feel like I can run the race.
Hike 4: Green Valley Gap
ギャップの谷はロッククライミングのビギナー向けの場所として有名です。The Gap is known to be a good rock climbing practice place for beginners.
Up For Anything (何でもやっちゃう) という面白い名前のグループのメンバーになって初のハイキングでした。6.1 km (3.8 miles) We joined another new group, “Up For Anything.” It was our first hike with them. It was 3.8 miles total including walking through the rocky bottom of the gap.
チャレンジするような事は何もなかったのですが、新しい事を二つ学習しました。We didn’t find it to be challenging, but we learned two new things.
Cryptobiotic soil （クリプトバイオティック：クリプトとは隠れていること、バイオティックは生物、隠れた生物が生息する土壌のこと）
目に見えないバクテリアが土の中で一生懸命生きてます。そのため、土はこんな風にクラスト化します。だから「土が生きている」と表現する人もいます。踏んでしまえば壊れてしまいますが、それなりに硬くなっているので雨や風に流されにくくなり、風化や侵食を防いでいるんです。Bacteria live in the soil. Therefore, the soil becomes crusty like this. Some people say it is a living soil because of the presence of the bacteria. It is very easy to destroy by stepping on it. But it is somewhat hard so normal processes of erosion don’t destroy it.
水がなくても何ヶ月も何年も生き延びられるよう、死んだように活動を停止してただひたすら雨が降るのを待ち続けられる苔です。だから表面は枯れて死んでいるように見えるんですが、水を注ぐとまるで生き返ったように鮮やかな緑になります。だからそんなニックネームがついたんですね。 Moss can live many months and years without water. In order to do that, it has to save energy. In other words, it looks dead from the outside, but it is actually living as long as it contains at least 5% moisture within.
下の写真は生き返った苔です。ハイキングをし始めた頃に水をかけておいて、4時間後にみたら緑色になっていた証明写真です。The picture below is the proof of the resurrection moss. We poured a tiny bit of water on the moss that was brown at the beginning of the hike. The picture below is the same moss four hours later showing as bright green.
逞しい! Very hardy!
恐竜の足跡 Dinosaur Tracks
Warner Valley Dinosaur Track には、夥しい恐竜の足跡があり、思わず息を呑みます。ジュラ紀の初期、1.95億年前のものです。 Warner Valley Dinosaur Track is quite an impressive place with many dinosaur tracks. They are from 195 million years ago, the beginning of the Jurassic period.
残念ながら、足跡からだけでは恐竜を特定する事はきませんが、おおよその検討はつくようです。Unfortunately paleontologists can’t specify who’s footprint they are with certainty. They can only guess who made them.
人間の歴史の何百倍も時を越えるのは大好きです。 I love to jump back hundreds of times older than human history.
Hike 3: White Dome Nature Preserve
毎朝ハイキングをするグループに参加してみました。このグループ初のハイキングは約 6km のなだらかなコースでした。We joined a hiking group that hikes every early morning. This was our first time joining them. It was 3.7 miles and a moderately easy hike.
多分、左に見えるのがホワイトドーム。I think the White Dome is on the right in the below picture.
ここで特記する事は、Dwarf Bear-Poppy という植物。世界中でもここにしか生息しない希少植物です。冬なのでこんな姿ですが、春には美しい白い花を咲かせます。けなげに厳しい冬の寒さを耐えているんですね。The special note on this hike is that it is the home of the Dwarf Bear-Poppy plant. It lives only in this area of the world. Because it’s winter, it looks like this, but you can see pretty white flowers in Spring. How admirable it is to live through such cold winter days!
ここはMoenkopi という地層で石膏岩を含んだ荒地です。そんなユニークな場所に生きているのがこの植物なんですね。国の絶滅危惧種に指定されています。This is a badlands area composed of the Moenkopi formation. This plant likes to live in such places that include gypsum everywhere.
5K: 今週 This week
5Kを約46分半。登り下りはほどほどの設定です。そろそろフィットネスセンターから卒業して外を走ってみようかな。It took about 46.5 minutes to complete 5K run. I am wondering if I should start going out on the roads instead of the treadmill soon.
暗かったシャワー室 The Shower Room Was Dark
改装の理由1、電気をつけても暗かったし、外の景色が見えなかった。それに尽きます。 One of two reasons for us to do the bathroom remodeling was that the shower room was so dark. We couldn’t see any outside view either.
しかも物を置く棚が一つだけ。It had only one shelf in it as well.
改装後、視界が開けて電気をつけなくても明るくなった。After the remodeling, it became so bright even without turning on the lights. The view is fantastic.
棚も3つに増えた。満足！ We have three shelves now. I am so satisfied with it.
Hike 2: カバの洞窟 Hippopotamus Cave
約8.5 km (5.3 miles) 700feet 標高差の簡単なハイキング。 St George の南にギャップ (Gap = 裂け目、まさに断層で亀裂が起きた部分) という場所があります。その右側をギャップに沿って歩いていくと洞窟があります。It was an easy hike, 5.3 miles and 700 feet elevation gain. You can find Hippo’s cave after a 2-3 mile walk along the Gap in St. George UT.
洞窟内部で見つけた不思議な物体。We found a strange object in the cave.
「コウモリのフンが固まった物？」「古い木の樹液？」小さなカケラを洞窟の外に持ち出して観察しましたが未だに謎です。”Could it be bat droppings?” “Or could it be old tree sap?” etc. Although we observed a piece of it outside of the cave, it’s still unknown.
ギャップの崖の上から南方の景色。今度はこの下のルートを歩きます。Looking down the southern direction from the cliff. We will be hiking the trail down below in a week.
Honey-Olive Oil Cake
蜂蜜でカラメル状にしたオレンジをケーキパンの下に敷いて焼いたケーキ。作り方はパイナップルアップサイドダウンケーキと同じみたい。Lay caramelized orange slices at the bottom of a cake pan, then add batter and bake. It’s similar to a pineapple upside-down cake.
オリーブオイルを使っているから味がすっきりしている。I think it’s refreshing because it uses olive oil rather than butter.

5Kへの道 The Way to Get To 5K
先週のランニングのトレッドミルの結果。6.03 km (3.75 miles) This is a result of last week’s run on the treadmill.
昨日のトレッドミルの結果。5.5 km (3.42 miles) This is yesterday’s result.
今年5K ランレースに参加するつもりです。勿論、10Kを目指しますが、まずはここから。なぜ今かって？「死ぬまでにしておきたい事、トップ100」に入っているからです。I want to attend a 5K race this year. My goal is to attend a 10K race eventually. You may ask why now? Because it is included in my “100 things I want do before I die” list.
浴室の改装 Bathroom Remodel
前 : Before
去年7月のある朝、浮かんだアイディアをiPadに描いてみた。I drew an idea on my iPad one morning in July.
6ヶ月後。Six months later.
去年7月にアイディアが浮かんできました。理由は「暗い」「使いにくい」の2点でした。まだ、窓、バスルームのドア、ベースボードなどの作業が残っていますが、待ちきれず使い始めています。何しろ作業を開始してからすでに6ヶ月も経ってますから。 I had the idea for this project in July last year. The main issues with the old bathroom were “not convenient” and “dark”. We still need to work on the window, the door to the bathroom, and baseboards, but we have started using it already. That is because it has already been 6 months since we started the project!!!
自然を部屋の中に取り込む事と、砂漠地帯の中で少し砂浜にいるような作れたら良いなと思いました。I wanted to bring the nature outside the window in to the room, and additionally create the feeling of being at a beach in the desert living.
Hike 1: Devil’s Fire Rock Art Loop
2022年1月2日、新年初のハイキング。約 13 km、333 ｍ の標高差。January 2nd, the first hike in the new year, 2022. About 8 miles, 1100 feet of vertical elevation change.
早朝、雨上がりで凍りついた砂丘。キラキラと光っていた。A small sand-dune was frosted and shining in the early morning right after a rain.
絶壁に描かれた物から洞窟近辺に描かれた壁画。There were numerous petroglyphs on high cliffs and walls.
リトルフィンランドの奇岩と流線形 Strangely shaped rocks together with streamlines were everywhere at Little Finland.
アリゾナ州のリトルフィンランドへ向かうルートの一つです。This hike was one of trails to get to Little Finland in Arizona.
