真夜中のパーティー – Midnight Party

ステルスカメラと小さな水瓶を前庭に設置しました。野生動物を観察するためです。- We have set up a stealth camera and a water bowl in our front yard in order to observe wild animals.

まずはロードランナー。- The first character was a roadrunner. 

ウズラの家族。- Then a quail family.

夜にはカンガルーラット。- A kangaroo rat appeared at night.

でも、昼夜問わず、なんと言ってもウサギが大半でしょうか。　- But almost always rabbits appear all day and all night at any hour of the day.

ステルスカメラは一日約1000枚撮影しますが、そのうち990枚がウサギです。こうしてまさに井戸端会議状態です。- The stealth camera takes about 1000 shots per day, and 990 shots are rabbits. They are socializing by the bowl like this.

ところが、この夜は特別でした。- But then, last night was very different.

ウソ！ネコ？違うよ。ボブキャットが夜食を咥えて歩いてる！ – What? Is it a cat?  No!!! A bobcat is walking with a mid-night snack in his mouth!

ウサギばかりでうんざりしていたら、一気に大逆転ホームランです。噂に聞いていたボブキャットですが、やっぱりいたんですね。この家が建っている場所、カエンタ層にちなんでカエンタと名付けました。- We had grown tired of deleting the rabbit pictures. But this exciting incident changed our enthusiasm for the stealth cam.  We’ve heard from neighbors that there are bobcat here, but didn’t take it seriously until now.  Bobcats really exist!  We decided to call him Kayenta as our house sits on Kayenta formation.

そして、再び平和にウサギの井戸端会議が再開しました。- Then, the rabbit social started peacefully again.

 

 

 

マーモット – Marmot

キバラマーモット、目撃したのは2回目、写真に収めたのは初めてです。シーダーブレイク国定公園を散策中に崖から登ってきました。- A Yellow-bellied marmot.  This is my second time witnessing, but the first time capturing this animal in my camera.  It came out from a cliff at Cedar Breaks National Monument while we were hiking on a trail.望遠レンズがなかったので、質は悪いんですが、雰囲気わかりますよね。- Unfortunately, the quality is not good because I didn’t have a telephoto lens.  Even so, I think you can still understand the general features.

キバラマーモットはシーダーブレイク (富士山と同じぐらいの高度）のような高所に生息し、約80%を巣穴で過ごすそうです。20％の外出中に出会えて良かった。- Yellow-bellied marmots live at higher altitude places like Cedar Breaks, 10,000 feet, and spend 80% of their lives in their burrows.  I am glad we met him during the 20% of the time he was out.

秘境 – Hidden Gems

ヤントフラットはほとんど知られていないため、人が訪れることはあまりありません。しかも、夏、40度を超えるような時に行く人はいないでしょう。- Not many people visit Yant Flat because it is not widely known.  On top of that, who wants to be there in the summer when it is over 100 degrees? 

トレイルヘッドから往復で約8ｋｍ、着いてから歩き回ることを考えると9ｋｍほど。暑くなる前に帰ってきたかったので、朝6時半に出発しました。- The hike was about 6 miles, including wondering around the cliffs.  We set out at 6:30 am in order to get back before it got too hot.   

そして突然姿を表す光景に、たいていの人は「わ〜！！！」と感嘆の声を上げるはずです。- I am sure that most people can’t help it but say “Wow~!” when they see the site suddenly appear in front of them.

でも、こんなものではなく、その先に行くともっと息を飲む光景が現れます。- But that’s not all.  If you walk deeper into the flat, you can’t find words to say about the site.

その昔、海底だったこの地の岩はみんな流線型です。- All rocks around there are streamlined shapes because it was under the sea once upon the time.

ナバホ砂岩の鉄分が酸化されてできた赤やオレンジなどの色。それが綺麗な模様を作り出してきたんですね。- The red and orange color on the Navajo sandstone are from iron oxide.  It creates beautiful designs.

2億年という長い年月を経て、大地が揺れるたびに形を変え、風雨が滑らかな形を作り上げてきました。- It changed shape every time earth shakes, and rain and wind refined the shapes over 200 million years.

静かにただそこに在る秘境、ヤントフラットでした。My hidden gem, Yant Flat, simply exists there quietly.

宇宙のことを考えていたら、頭の中がグニャグニャになってしまった。だから、久しぶりに友人に撮ってもらった写真でもご紹介します。- I’ve been thinking about Space to the point that my head is going to explode!  So, I am going to show pictures of me that my friend took, for a change.

一昨日、Yant Flat に行きました。(明日、その時の写真をご紹介します。) こんな所に身を置くと、アリになっような気がします。- We went to Yant Flat two days ago.  (I’ll write about it tomorrow.)  I was an ant in such a vast place.

一緒に行った友人と。わー、すっかり日焼けしてる。- With my friend.  Wow, I got tanned a lot.

そして、こちらはセルフィー。気持ちいい〜！- And this is a selfie.  I feel good!

おかえりロジャー　- Welcome Back Roger

ふと庭を見ると、オオミチバシリ、ロードランナーのロジャーがチョコンと芝の上に座っています。- When I looked outside, to my surprise, a roadrunner was sitting on the lawn.

今までこんなにくつろいでいるロジャーを見たことがありません。- I have never seen him relaxing like this before.

しばらくして、塀の上に飛び乗るのを躊躇していたようでしたが、ベンチに乗って、ようやく飛び乗りました。- He hesitated a little, but hopped on a bench, and hopped on the fence finally.

ふーん、仕草といい、この羽の状態といい、もしかして、この子は今年生まれたばかりかもしれません。- Hmmm, this one could still be young, born this year, based on the behavior and the condition of the feathers.

こちら、二日前に来てくれた別のロードランナー。やっぱり、羽も綺麗で目の当たりも格好いい。おかえり、ロジャー！子供のロジャー、元気に成長してね！- The picture below is another roadnunner who visited us two days ago.  Indeed, he is good looking with nicely covered feather and decorated eye.

ヘビの求婚ダンス – Courtship Dance of the Snakes

五月のある昼下がり、訳のわからない物体が道の真ん中で動いていました。- One afternoon in May, we saw a strange creature in the middle of a dirt road.

近づいて見ると、なんと2匹のムチヘビです。ケンカをしているのかと思ったら、どうやら求婚ダンスの真っ最中だったようです。- As we got closer to it, we realized that it was not one, but two coachwhip snakes.  I thought they were fighting, but actually it was a courtship dance.

2匹は、お互いの動きに合わせてダンスをしているよう。しかも延々と続きます。- The two snakes danced, moving their bodies synchronously together for a long long time.

ついに彼らのダンスは道から逸れていきましたが、こういう時は周りが見えてないのかもしれません。私たちのことも、あまり気にしてなかったみたい。どうぞ、タカなどに注意してくださいね。- Thank god they moved out from the road finally, even though they didn’t care about anything around them.  They didn’t even care about us taking pictures from such a close distance.  Please pay attention to things around you, especially predators like hawks.

トカゲの国の大相撲 – Sumo Wrestling in Lizard Country

日本語名はわかりません。こちらシマウマ縞のシッポの Zebra-tailed lizardです。- This is a Zebra-tailed lizard.

大抵は、こんな姿をしてますが、先日は様子が変でした。喉が大きく膨らんだり、しぼんだり、また、体の色も結構鮮やかです。- You see it like this normally, but it was very strange the other day.  The throat swelled so large and shrunk repeatedly.  Look at the color of the body.  It looks brighter.

その後まもなく2匹のトカゲの登場です。私とばんちゃんの朝ごはん中、奇妙な動きを始めました。2匹ともオスのようなので、求婚行動ではないです。- Soon after that, two of them appeared in front of us while we were eating breakfast.  It’s not mating since both of them were male.

お互い、見合ってます。- They were looking at each other.

近づいていきますが、物別れに終わったようです。どうやら片足を立てるのが先頭準備のしるしのようですが、両者ともに準備できていません。- They got closer, but nothing happened.  Apparently they both need to be ready for action to begin.  One of them had one hind leg raised. It’s a sign of being ready for a fight. The other did not, and it means he wasn’t ready.

また、見合ってます。- They were looking at each other.

でも、やはり物別れに終わりました。- Oh, again, nothing had happened.

どうやら、タイミングが合ってないようです。こんなことを何度も繰り返して、延々30分以上です。- It seems they weren’t sync’d yet.  They repeated the same actions over and over for more than a half hour.

さて今回は両者とも、結構いい感じ。何がいいのかわかりませんが気合が入っているようです。- Let’s see, it looks good this time.  I am not sure what is good for them, but both looked ready to go.

ハッケヨイ、のこった、のこった*！- (Note*: Sumo wrestling words used by the referee at the beginning of fight meaning roughly “Ready, fight well, go!”)

どちらが勝者かわかりませんが、終了しました。（ばんちゃんによると、長いシッポの方が勝ったとのこと。）- It ended although I didn’t understand which one won.  (according to Banchan, the long tail won.)

相撲は呼吸が合うまで仕切り直しをするので、時間がかかる競技です。でも、いざ始まると一瞬で勝負がつきます。クビワトカゲの戦闘シーンはまさに相撲です。そうか、これがトカゲの国の相撲なんですね。- Sumo wrestling requires a long time to start fighting because both wrestlers repeat the get ready position until they are in sync.  Once they are sync’d, the fighting is done really quickly. Some end in a second.  The Great Basin Collard lizards’ wrestling was just like Sumo wrestling.  I see, this is how Sumo wrestling goes in the lizard country.

苦灰岩 – Dolomite

サンプルロックガーデンの#30にあるのは、苦灰岩です。偶然見つけた苦灰岩採掘場から拾って来ました。- These rocks at #30 in my sample rock garden are Dolomite. I picked them up from a Dolomite mine that we found accidentally.

ローンパインからデスバレーに向かうカリフォルニア州道136 から左に伸びるドロマイトループを行くと採掘場があります。1869年に発見されてからの歴史が綴られている立派な碑が建っています。– It’s located at Dolomite loop off of California State Road 136 between Lone Pine and Death Valley. A great looking plaque is standing there explaining the history of the mine.

早速立ち寄って見ることにしましたが、あいにくオフィスには人がいなくて、話を聞くことはできませんでした。- We visited the mine, but no one was in the office so we couldn’t talk to anyone about the mine.

その代わり、クビワトカゲがご挨拶してくれました。「その石も苦灰岩ですか？」- Instead, a Collared lizard greeted us on a rock. “Is that also a dolomite rock?”

苦灰岩とは、私の理解をそのまま簡単に書くと、石灰岩の中のカルシウムがマグネシウムに置き換えられた石のこと。ここがまだ海底だった頃の出来事です。地球の46億年の歴史の中で、海抜1,600ｍもあるこの地が地表に現れ始めたのは、白亜紀海路の後、たかだか 6千万年前なんですね。ちなみに、ヒトは諸説あるようですが、約200-700万年前にアウストラロピテクスが誕生していたとされています。– Based on my understanding (not 100% sure), Dolomite is a rock originally a limestone, but one of the elements, Calcium, has been replaced by Magnesium over many years. It happened when this area was still under the sea. Can you imagine that? The mine is currently about 5,000 feet above sea level, yet it was under the sea. FYI, it was only about 60 million years ago, after Western Interior Seaway, that it startEd to rise above the sea in the 4.6 billion years of Earth history. And if you ask, human history is only 2 – 7 million years, Australopithecus was born.

採掘場全体が真っ白でした。遠い地球の歴史と遥か彼方の宇宙にめまいを覚え、私の頭の中も真っ白になりました。- The Dolomite mine was white everywhere. My brain became white* as well, trying to think about something that is way beyond my capacity to imagine involving huge amounts of time and space. (*Note: “My brain became white” is a Japanese language expression for “My mind went blank” in English.)

 

ホイットニー山とアラバマ ヒルズ – Mt. Whitney and Alabama Hills

395号線沿いのローンパインという町は、アラスカを除くとアメリカで一番高い山、ホイットニー山 (4,421m) の登山道入り口があることで有名です。- Lone Pine is a small town famous for the entrance to the Mount Whitney Portal. Mount Whitney (14,505 feet) is the tallest mountain in the US, not including Alaska.

もう一つ、この町はアラバマヒルズがあることでも有名です。私たちはカリフォルニア州から帰る途中で立ち寄りました。- This town is famous for one more thing, the Alabama Hills. We stopped by this town on the way back from California.

なぜ、アラバマヒルズは有名かというと、かつて、多くのハリウッド映画がここを使い、多くの映画スターたちが訪れていたんですね。- You may ask “Why are the Alabama Hills famous?” It was used for many Hollywood films because of the unique landscape, and brought many Hollywood movie stars here.

私たちの泊まった部屋はかつてジョンウェインが泊まっていた部屋だと言われました。窓からホイットニー山が見えます。- We were told that our hotel room used to used by John Wayne. I simply took the word for fun without questioning it. We could view gorgeous Mt. Whitney from the room window.

翌朝のアラバマヒルズは静かでした。コロナ騒ぎのおかげで、キャンプをしている人たちをちらほら見かけましたが、見渡す限りほんの数人しか歩いていませんでした。- It was quiet at Alabama Hills the next morning. Due to Corona chaos, only a handful of people were camping, and a few people were walking there.

前回来た時には、人だらけで撮れなかった有名なアーチ。- This is the famous arch rock. It was impossible to take pictures of it last time we visited because people were everywhere.

今回は私たちだけで、こんなに綺麗にホイットニー山を中に収めてパチリ！- For yesterday, there was only us, so without any effort, I could capture Mt. Whitney in the arch.

ところで、この石は閃長閃緑岩（せんちょうせんりょくがん）という石です。驚くことに、ホイットニー山も同じこの石でできているんですね。地質学者によると、尖った山と丸い石は、長い年月をかけて、4,000m 以上の高い場所と1,600m の低地での風化の過程がこんなに違った形にしたのだろうとのことです。拾ったサンプルの石は、石ガーデンの29番目に治りました。- By the way, this rock is called Monzogranite. Believe it or not, the round rocks in Alabama Hills and sharp pointy rocks at Mt. Whitney are made with the same rock, Monzogranite. According to Geologists, many years of weathering at higher than 14,000 feet compared to 5,000 feet caused the difference. The rock I picked up from there (Alabama Hills, not Mt. Whitney) is now at my sample garden #29.

高校生の頃からの憧れ、ホイットニー山。その山をこんなに平和な気持ちで眺めることができたのは、本当にラッキーでした。- I have admired Mount Whitney ever since I was in high school in Japan. We were really lucky to have a moment to view it in such a peaceful setting.

夜の訪問者 – A Visitor at Night

この地では、爬虫類の話題には事欠きません。- We never run out of the reptile storiesin this area.

こちら、ヒキガエルさん。- Let me introduce you Mr. Toad.

去年もお風呂の常連客でしたが、今年も戻って来られました。夜な夜な、玄関前の噴水の下の小さな水溜りでリラックスされてます。- He was a regular guest at our hot spring last year, and he returned back again.  He relaxes nightly in a small pond under the fountain by the front door.

それが、どうしたわけか、昨日は 昼過ぎにやって来て、家の中をのぞいていました。- However for some reasons, he visited us in the early afternoon the other day.  He was looking inside the house carefully through a window at next to the front door.

その後、室内に誰も見当たらなかったので、玄関ドアの前に移動しました。チョコリと座り、誰かを待っておられるようでした。残念ながらカエル語は知らないので、要件を伺えませんでした。 – He gave up the window after a while as he didn’t see no one in there and relocated himself to right in front of the door.  He sat there nicely he was waiting for someone to come out patiently.  I couldn’t ask him what his important matter was because I didn’t know the toad language.

お風呂の湯加減の苦情でしょかねぇ。- I wonder he had a complaint about the temperature of the bath.

チョコレートフィンガーの花 – Chocolate Fingers flowers

日本語名がわかりません。英語名も不確かですが、多肉植物のコチレドンの仲間だと思います。 – I don’t know Japanese name for this plant.  Actually, I am not sure about English name either, but my guess is it is one of succulents in the Cotyledon family.

なぜなら、オレンジ色のベル状の花を咲かせるからです。去年は不作でしたが、今年初めてたくさん咲いてくれました。どうしてでしょうねぇ。見るだけで幸せな気持ちになります。 – It’s because it holds these pretty bell-shaped orange flowers.  It didn’t bloom at all last year, but this year it did, and with so many flowers.  I don’t know why, but it makes me so happy just seeing them.

お店ではチョコレートフィンガーという名前で売られていました。名前の通り、チョコレート色の指がたくさんランダムに生えてるのが特徴なんでしょうか。大好きなウィキペディアにエントリーがないのが残念です。- It was sold as “Chocolate fingers” plant.  As the name indicates, so many chocolate colored fingers grew out from only one plant.  It’s so unfortunate that this plant is not listed in Wikipedia.

中庭のトカゲ – Lizard in Courtyard

ガレージと母屋との間の中庭は、最近好きな場所の一つです。 – The courtyard from main house to garage is one of my favorite spaces these days.

石探索で仕入れてきた石の調査をしたり、庭の手入れの準備をしたり、はたまたあらゆる物の一時的な物置場でもあります。 – It’s a miscellaneous task place like checking out the rocks I picked up from somewhere, prepping for gardening, or putting things temporarily.

そこへ、時々ピョコりと現れるメスのサバクハリトカゲ。どうやら、このコーナーの下に住んでいるようです。- And there, a female Desert Spiny Lizard pops up from under the table time to time. My guess is that it lives down there at the corner.

最初に見た時は悲鳴をあげましたが、もう慣れてしまったので「また来たのね。」と声をかけられる余裕ができました。爬虫類はまだ苦手です。でも、触らなければ大丈夫。ここに住み始めてから一年間、頑張った成果です。- I screamed and ran away when I saw it for the first time, but I’ve gotten used to it and built up enough tolerance now, so I could talk to it, “Oh, It’s you again.”　I am still not fond of reptiles, but I am ok now as long as they don’t touch me.  

人は変われる！ – “People can change!”
