モンゾニ岩 – Monzonite

セイントジョージには興味深いものが盛りだくさん。パインバレー山脈もその一つです。- St George, UT has many interesting things and places, and Pine Valley Mountains is one of them.

この山脈は、おそらく世界一大きいとされるラコリスがある事で有名です。ラコリスとは、簡単に言えば、地表に出きれなかったマグマが地中横長に広がってできた巨大岩盤です。- It’s famous for being the largest laccolith in the world.  To explain laccolith in one sentence, it’s a large rock body that was created by magma that spread sideways because it couldn’t get to the surface. 

その多くは、モンゾニ岩となり地表に現れています。ライキン（地衣類）に覆われているモンゾニ岩。- Laccolith is now exposed on the surface as Monzonite rock.  Below is a Monzonite rock covered by lichen.

そして、これがサンプルとして持ち帰ってきたモンゾニ岩です。- And this is a sample rock I brought back home.

モンゾニ岩はラコリスによってできた石なので火成岩です。クラロン層の上に流れ込んだマグマは長い時間をかけてその近辺の石を巻き込んで固まっていきました。- Monzonite is an igneous rock.  Magma intruded into the Claron formation, melted the surrounding rocks, and hardened over a long, long time.

約2,200万年前のこと。想像できますか？この近辺一帯の地中も高温でグニャグニャで、地上でも火山噴火もあったりと、とにかく熱い場所だったんですね。- It happened about 22 milion years ago.  Can you imagine that this entire area was so hot underground, and so hot with volcanic eruptions above ground.

今では、一番高い山頂は3,000メートル以上もあり、夏でも涼しい場所となっています。- Now, 22 million years later, it’s one of the cool places around here even during the summer months because of the high altitude. The highest peak is over 10,000 feet.

モンゾニ岩は、私のサンプル石ガーデンの14番目に収まりました。 – The Monzonite rocks are now at spot number 14 in my sample rock garden.

念願のサンプル石ガーデンが完成しました！ – My sample rock garden is finally finished!

中庭を抜けて、裏庭とゴルフ練習の庭への通路の中間。私たちのＭV Rockのある丘もも見える、丁度いい場所です。- I picked a pathway to between the backyard and a golf practice garden.  I can view our MV Rock on the hill as well.  What a perfect location it is!

植え込みを引き抜いて、地面も平らにし、石を並べてと、全部一人で頑張ったぞ！久しぶりにプロジェクトを完成させた充実感があります。もちろん、バンちゃんのモラルサポートもありました。- Removing plants, flattening the area, laying rocks, I worked all of them by myself.  It gave me a sense of accomplishment that I haven’t have for a while.  Of course, Banchan gave me a lot of moral support.

そして、亀の亀太郎に見張り番になってもらいました。- And for the last touch, I asked “Kametaro”  to be the watch tortoise.

ハチドリのヤキモチ -　Hummingbird’s Jealousy

「さわやな朝。ハチドリさん、おはよう。」 – ” Good morning, Mr. Hummingbird.  What a great morning it is today!”

「おや？見かけない顔。まだ若鳥みたい。かわいいですねー。」- “Look, a new face is there.  Who could that be?  It could be a fledgling.  How cute…!”

「ちょっと！かわいいのは僕。いつも僕でしょ！」 – “Hey, it’s me.  I am always the cute one.  Remember?!”

「そうそう、ハチドリさんが一番ね。」 – “Yes, yes, Hummingbird, you are always the most cute bird around here.”

「いつも私を追いかけてくれなかったら、もう遊んであげないよ。」- “I won’t play with you anymore if you don’t chase me all the time.”

夕日の中の魚 – The Fish in Sunset

夕日を追いかけて、15号線沿いの無名のキャンプサイトにたどり着いた。 – Chasing the sunset, we had come to an unknown campsite off HWY 15.

8:22pm

こんにちは、ウェストテンプルの魚君。- Hello again, Mr. Fish, on the West Temple wall.

夕日は 8:40pm だから、もうあまり時間がない。- Sunset time that day was 8:40 pm.  We didn’t have much time to search for a good place or setup our camera.

8:34pm

光はすでにウェストテンプルの上の方しか当たってない。- It goes by so quick.  The sunlight is only at the top of the West Temple.

8:41pm

振り向いたらすでに日は暮れていた。The sun was set already when I looked back to the west.

もうあたりは暗くなっていた。バンちゃんが立っている方を見ると、彼は腰を据えている。そう、写真家はこれからの色の変化を期待する。 – It was already dark when I looked in the direction of Banchan.  It seems he was ready to take more pictures.  That’s right.  Photographers look for the subtle color changes after sunset.

グレナディン色が夜の青に消されていく幻想的な時。- After the sunset, when the night blue gradually invades the Grenadine pink, it creates a mystic world.

そして、最後の力を振り絞っているかのように、なぜか、東の空が一瞬だけ明るくなる。不思議な一瞬。Then, the east sky became suddenly brighter about 10 seconds as if the sun squeezed out the last bit of light.  A magical moment it was.

アカオノスリのランチ – Red-tailed Hawk’s Lunch

突然現れたアカオノスリ。でも、もう何枚も撮ってるから今回はパス・・・と、思っていたら何か持ってる。 – A Red-tailed Hawk appeared suddenly.  I thought I could ignore it this time because I have taken many pictures of them.  But then, I noticed that it was carrying something with his feet.

やったねー！ガラガラヘビみたい。アカオノスリのランチ。質は必ずしも良くないですが、獲物を持って飛んでるアカオノスリは初ショットです。 – OMG, it’s arattlesnake!  It must have been his lunch.  Although the quality of the shots aren’t good, I am quite happy as it’s my first time capturing a Red-tailed Hawk with his prey.

フォーカステスト – Focus test

ずーっと先延ばしにしていましたが、ついに我慢できずレンズのフォーカステストをすることにしました。 – I have been postponing it for a while, but finally checked my lens’ focus with the focus test kit.

その後、早速、キャリブレーションの成果を試します。一番気になっていた100〜400ｍｍのズームもスクッと良くなって快適です。こちらのショットは100ｍｍです。- Then I made test shots to see the improvement of the calibration.  The lens that most concerned me was the 100-400 mm zoom lens. Calibration improved the image focus drastically.  The below image is taken at 100mm.

Apache Plume いい感じ。Apache Plume looks pretty good.

Bunny Ear サボテンにとまっていたこの虫は何でしょうね？ – I wonder what kind of bug this is on a Bunny Ear cactus.

フォーカスしたいところに焦点が当たってるのは気持ちがいいです。 – It gives me great satisfaction when I can get the exact focus on where I want to focus.

虫を発見したと言ったら、Bunny Ear たちがワサワサと心配顔で集まって来ました。虫は無害だから無視していいのよ。む、む。む。。 – Bunny Ear cacti looked at me with concerned faces because I said the word “bug”.  “Don’t worry, it’s a harmless bug” I said.

ウソをついてしまった。この虫に食べられてしまう前になんとかしなければ。- I lied. This bug actually does feed on these type of cacti. I will have to do something about it.

あ、これがいい。このてんとう虫で、キャリブレーションの成果をじっくり試して見ましょう。- Oh yes, I found it.  This ladybug is a perfect object to check the result of the lens calibration.  

小さいから難しい。でもなんとか撮れたかな？ – You are so small.  It was quite challenging, but I could somehow manage a few shots.

わっ！てんとう虫さん、意外なお顔立ち。それに、ちょっと怖い。 – No kidding!  You!  Your face is a bit unexpected and scary.

ともあれ、てんとう虫の顔が撮れたので、レンズのキャリブレーション成功ということですね。 – Well, in anycase, I must say that it was a success because I could capture the ladybug’s face.

カップヌードルの宇宙 – Space in a Cup O’Noodles

宇宙の誕生は、カップヌードルみたいだ。- The birth of Space was like a Cup O’Noodles.

ビッグバングが起き、空間と時間が生まれ、さらに最初の水素とヘリウムができた。その間、約3分。カップヌードルにお湯を入れて、食べられるまで3分待っている間に宇宙ができた！ – With the Big Bang, space and time, then hydrogen and helium, the low-mass elements, were produced.  It took three minutes.  Space was born while we wait for a Cup O’Noodles to be ready to eat after pouring hot water in!

セイントジョージに去年引っ越して来て以来、ありとあらゆる物から感動をもらいました。小さな生き物から、大きな生き物、大自然の美しさ、怖さ。毎日が驚きと感動でいっぱいでした。一年後の今でも自然は深く魅力的です。中でも最近特に心を奪われているものが石です。- I have lived in St George, Utah for about a year now.  Since then, nature gave me a variety of impressions, and I am awed by them.  I have found something new every day from tiny bugs, to large creatures, the beauty, and the power of nature.  They are still so mysterious and fascinating to me.  And now, I have discovered a new thing on top of these things. Rocks.

石、そんな物に興味を持つようになるとは想像もしていませんでした。- I never imagined that I would be interested in rocks this much.

ここで見られる石は主にナバホ砂岩層とケヤンタ層の堆積岩です。ジュラ紀の1.7 – 1.9 億年ごろに形成されました。- St Goerge and nearby areas expose mainly Navajo Sandstone and Kayenta formations.  They are from the Jurassic period, about 170 – 190 million years ago.

それが、少し場所を移動すると三畳紀からカンブリア紀、2 – 5 億年まで遡ってできた地層を見ることができます。- If you go farther out from St George, you could see many more strata from Triassic to Cambrian periods, 200 – 500 million years ago.

つい先日訪れた秘密の場所では（地質学者の間では有名ですが。）なんと、原生代の地層に出会うこともできました。10億年以上も前、単細胞がようやく生まれてきた頃。ここ、セイントジョージが所属するコロラド高原は、まだ海の中でした。- We were so lucky that we could find strata from Proterozoic period where we visited a secret place, although it’s not secret among geologists.  This period is from one billion years ago, the time single or multi cellular living things started appearing on earth.  The Colorado plateau where St George belongs, was still in a water.

こんなに長い歴史の中では、私の存在どころか人間の存在などぶっ飛んでしまいます。少し大げさに言えば、宇宙の誕生につながる、地球の始まりに近い痕跡のある石に出会った！そんな石を眺めると胸が弾けてしまうほど感動します。 – In such a long earth history, our human history is a flicker of imagination.  To stretch the expression a little, the rock allows us to trace the beginning of earth, and expand our imagination to the beginning of space.  Such a notion blows my mind, and when I gaze at rocks my heart starts pounding faster with joy.

地質学の知識ゼロの私が、高校の地学のクラスでは居眠りをしていた私が、今、石の物語が知りたくて、手探りで勉強し始めました。これから、不定期的にサンプルとして持ち帰って来た石の話を少しづつ書いていきたいと思っています。 –  I never cared about geology and slept through the geology classes during high school.  Therefore, I still have nearly zero knowledge of geology.  But I have started studying about it because I want to know the stories of rocks. So I will write about my findings based on my sample rocks that I have brought back home a little at a time.

青紫 – Blue Purple

何色と言うのでしょう。この色に出会った。今、特に好きな色。 – What would you call this color?  I met this color, my favorite color now.

サルビア ガラニティカ ブラックアンドブルームと呼ばれているらしい。小さな花だけど、清しさを与えてくれる。- The flower is called Salvia guaranitica, Black & Bloom.  Each flower is small but gives me a feeling of serenity.

うちの庭の新しいメンバー。 – It’s a new member in our garden.  

オオミチバシリの贈り物 – Roadrunner’s Gift

窓の外に突然現れたオオミチバシリ。しかも近すぎ。カメラの準備が出来てなかった私にはこれが唯一のショット。 – A roadrunner appeared right outside of the window suddenly.  Nooo!  It’s too close!  This is the only shot I could get as it was so sudden.

口にくわえているのは孵化する前の卵のようです。さっさと食べずにくわえているところを見ると、彼女へのプレゼント、もしくはひなたちへの食べ物。でも、前回、カエルを加えているところを目前にして撮れなかった事を思うと、オオミチバシリから私への贈り物です。 – The thing he is holding in his beak looks like an egg almost ready to hatch.  Could it be a gift for his girlfriend or food for his baby?  In any case, it is a gift to me from the roadrunner because I missed a Kodak chance when he had a frog the last time.

アナホリフクロウ – Burrowing Owl

昨日は現実とは思えないほとラッキーでした。初めて見たアナホリフクロウ。 – It was so unreal, my first time seeing a Burrowing owl yesterday.

ビーバーダムワッシュ国立保護区のジャシュアツリーの森の中でした。 – He was standing in the Joshua tree forest at Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area.

花粉バスケット – Pollen Basket

知らなかった花粉バスケットの話。ハチが花から花へ移動しながら集めるのは蜜だけじゃない。花粉も大切に集めて持ち帰るんです。 – Until now, I had never heard of bee’s pollen baskets.  Bees gather nectar from flowers but they gather pollen as well.

集めた花粉をお団子にして後ろ足に串刺しにして持ち帰るそうです。その花粉団子を花粉バスケットと呼ぶらしい。しかもメスバチだけ。- They gather pollen, wet them with nectar, and shape them as a ball so that they can stick it onto their legs and carry it back home.  That’s called a pollen basket.  And it’s done only by female bees.

裏庭に咲いたバラの森はハチたちの天国です。 – The rose field in our backyard is their heaven.

わー、羽の上からもお団子が見えますね。花粉がやけに花びらに散乱していると思ったら、メスバチたちが花粉集めをしてたんだ！ – Wow, I can see pollen baskets even through their wings.  Now I understand why I see bits of pollen scattered about on the flower petals sometimes.
