シッポの話 The Tale of a Tail
それはローズマリーの木の横で突然起こりました。 It happened right next to the rosemary bush.
- 登場人物：サバクハリトカゲとゴーファーネーク（多分）
- Characters: Desert spiny lizard, and Gopher snake (maybe)
トカゲがガレージの横を注意深くローズマリーの木の方向に歩いて来ました。そして、ローズマリーの木の30ｃｍぐらい前で立ち止まりました。何か躊躇しているような催眠術にかかったような様子。 A lizard was walking along the garage door towards our rosemary bush. And he froze about 10 inches in front of the rosemary bush. It seems that he was hypnotized by something.
その間1秒、ヘビが突然木の中からジャンプしてトカゲに襲いかかりました。Only a second or so later, a snake jumped out from the rosemary bush and attacked the lizard.
トカゲは地面から30ｃｍ以上ジャンプして去っていきました。ヘビはスルスルとローズマリーの木の中に消えていきました。 The lizard jumped up high as well about 10 inches and ran away. The snake also slithered away into the rosemary bush.
私には一瞬の出来事で何がどうなったのかわかりませんでした。ただ、ヘビはトカゲを捕まえ損ねたことは理解できました。 I couldn’t comprehend exactly what had just happened. I understood however that the snake failed to catch the lizard.
そして、残ったものは、このシッポ。 And the only thing left at the scene was this lizard tail.
ヘビはトカゲのシッポに噛み付いていたんですね。折れた所がその証拠です。その先の先端はトカゲ自身が命をかけて自分で切り落とした切り口です。 The snake actually bit the lizard tail. The bent section is the proof of it. The tip of the tail is the section the lizard himself released to protect his life.
家のガレージの前での短くも一大格闘劇でした。 It was a very short but grand drama in front of our garage.
スノーキャニオン州立公園 Snow Canyon State Park
ヒーラモンスターを求めて再びスノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。 We went to Snow Canyon State Park again to find a Gila monster.
ノドグロヒメドリさん、ヒーラモンスター見かけませんでしたか？ Hello, Black-throated Sparrow. Have you seen a Gila monster?
見かけませんね。No, I haven’t seen it.
白い尾のアンテロープリスさん、ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？ Hello, White-tailed Antelope squirrel. Have you seen a Gila monster?
No, I haven’t. 見てないよ。
サバクハリトカゲさん、いつもと違って面白いところにいますね。ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？遠い親戚ですよね？Hello, Desert Spiny lizard. You are at such an interesting place today. Have you seen a Gila monster? Isn’t it your distant cousin?
見てないよ。ところで、時々野菜も食べなくちゃいけないからこんな所にもも来るんだよ。No, I haven’t. By the way, I need to eat vegetables sometimes, so I come up here.
イワミソサザイさん、朝ご飯の最中ですか？お取り込み中失礼します。ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？Hello, Rock wren. Sorry to bother you in the middle of your breakfast. Have you seen a Gila Monster?
見てない。もう、いい加減にして！あっちに行って！No! That’s enough. Go away!
共存する Coexist
おはよう！ Good morning!
朝8時なのに既に36度を超えています。 Wow, it’s 8 am, already 98F today.
ズアカカンムリウズラのお父さんは、子供達がまだ起きる前から警護していました。Gambel’s quail dad was already up and guarding on the backyard fence even before his family wakes up.
ウズラに餌をあげ始めてから気づいたことがあります。同じ餌を食べに来る他の住人がいることです。 I found something since I have started feeding quails. There are more residents in the backyard coming to eat the same food and drink other than quails.
トウヒ（多分、メグロトウヒチョウ） Abert’s Towhee
ウェスターンウィップテイル (ムチのように長い尾を持っているトカゲ） Westernwhiptail lizard
トカゲは昆虫類が主食だと思ってたので意外でした。買ってきたウズラフードの中に、トカゲが好きそうなものが入っているんでしょうか。 Lizards eat insects. So, I was surprised that they also eat quail food. I am not sure the ingredients of the quail food from the pet-shop, but there must be something lizards also like to eat included in it.
メチャクチャ暑いので、ウズラもトカゲもぐったり。だから日影もシェアしています。今日も45度になるそうです。水の補給をしっかりして、生き延びてね。 It’s so hot that chicks, as well as lizards, don’t want to move. So they share the shade for resting. It will be 110F again today. Drink plenty of water and live through today!
ワイルドな訪問者 – Wild Visitor
今朝、ベッドルームの隅の方からカサカサという音が聞こえてきました。
なんと窓際に砂漠ハリトカゲ。
一心不乱に外に出ようとしていました。
A rustling sound came from a corner in our bedroom this morning. I was shocked to see a Spiny lizard there inside the window not so far away from me. I am sure he was also scared, because he was frantically scratching the window hoping to get out from there.
ヒェーと叫び声をあげて、出かけていたばんちゃんにテキストを送りました。その後、ドアを閉め、家を後にしました。
I screamed and run out of the room, closed the door, and sent a text to Banchan asking him to take care of it. And I left the house for my morning exercise class.
いつ入って来たんでしょうか。昆虫、爬虫類は外にいてほしい！
I wonder when the lizard came in. I want to keep all insects and lizards outside of the house!
捕獲された砂漠ハリトカゲ。
The spiny lizard was captured safely.
今年は自然の世界からの訪問者が少ないと思っていましたが、やっぱり来ましたね。プラスチックの箱カバーを外した後、超高速で去って行く前のトカゲ、スパイニー君です。いい顔してますよね。
I love to see wildlife outside around our house. We haven’t had many wild visitors this year, compared to last year. So I thought we would be safe inside the house, but I was wrong. Below is a nice portrait picture I took before he ran away at the speed of light.
おかえりスパイニィ – Welcome Back Spiny
「一年間のご無沙汰でしたね、サバクハリトカゲさん。」 – “Oh, it’s you, Desert Spiny Lizard. It’s been a year since I last saw you!”
「冬眠はいかがでしたか？」 – “How did your hibernation go?
「早速お出かけですね。どちらへ？」 – “You are going out already. Where to?”
「ところで、気がつかなかったんですが、口の横についている大きな溝は耳ですか？」 – “By the way, I didn’t notice it before, but what is the oval dent on the side of your mouth? Your ear?”
「あのさ〜」と、トカゲさん。- “Look!” said the lizard.
「そっとしておいてくれる？」 – “Can’t you leave me alone?”
「失礼しました。ともあれ、お帰りなさい！」 – “Oh, sorry! Anyway, welcome back!”
サバクハリトカゲの話 – Tail of Desert Spiny Lizard
おや？サバクハリトカゲ君ね。 – Oh? Ah, it’s you, Desert Spiny Lizard.
そんなもんくわえて何してんの？糸がついてるみたいだよ。 – Whatcha doin’ with such a thing in your mouth? Do you know a string is attached to it.
あれ、落としちゃったの？ – Oh no, you dropped it?
でも、それって、君の体から糸でぶら下がってるってこと？ – but it means that it’s hanging down from you by the thread? 
で、どうするの？ – Well, whatcha goin’ to do with it now?
はやっ！ – Wow, fast!
そっか、結局いらなかったのね。 – I see, you didn’t want it after all.
どうやら無くなったみたい。 – It seems it’s gone now.
良かったね。お疲れ様です。 – Thank god it’s done. Congrats.
Desert Spiny Lizard カップル
すでにお馴染みのDesert Spiny Lizard 砂漠ハリトカゲ君ですが、今日はやけにあごのあたりが膨らんでるかなぁと思っていたんですよね。
どうしちゃったのか、威嚇する相手も居なさそうだし・・・
と、思っていたら、彼女がいたんです。なーるほど！
色が若干オレンジ色なので、メスだと思います。
オスとメスの区別の記載がどのサイトにもないのですが、こうして仲良くしているところは、やはりカップルですよねぇ？
トカゲとウズラの関係
毎日が面白い。
窓の外を見ているだけで、いろいろなドラマが展開します。
今日もいつもの散策。ウズラのオスは一等警備隊長ですから、こうしてまだちびっこいウズラの子供達が無事散策できるよう、見張っています。そして、はて？
これは・・・なんと！トカゲの登場です。
さあ、ここからが緊張のドラマのスタートです。
警備隊長は早速トカゲ退治です。
野を超え山を越え・・・。
苦しいトカゲ君。必死に逃げて行きます。お腹やあごのあたりがやけに膨らんでいますが、威嚇しているのでしょうか？
しかし・・・突然、トカゲ君、ピタリと止まり動こうとしません。疲れてしまったのでしょうか。
これは・・・もしかして・・と、興奮しながら見守っていると、警備隊長は苦い顔をして通過して行ってしまいました。
えっと、何これ？拍子抜けです。こうしてドラマに幕がおりました。
