今日は黄色いハイライトの鳥たちについてです。 Today I will write about the birds with yellow highlights.
カワセミはブッポウソウという目の中に分類されている動物食の鳥です。全体的に鮮やかな色の鳥たちです。水辺に生息し、水面に急降下して魚類を捕食します。その他、虫や爬虫類も食べます。 The Kingfisher is a zoophagous (flesh eating) bird classified in the order Coraciformes. Overall, these birds are brightly colored. They live near water and prey on fish by swooping down to the surface of the water. They also feed on insects and reptiles.
数回カワセミを見かけましたが、写真に収められたのは、この2枚だけです。アメリカヤマセミです。 I saw Kingfishers several times, but these are the only two I was able to photograph. They are Belted Kingfishers.
この地に引っ越して来たばかりの頃、鳥の会の人たちと公園を歩いていた時に見つけました。鳥の会の人たちは高性能の双眼鏡を持っているので、遠いところの鳥も発見し教えてくれます。この時も興奮して早速撮りましたが、豆粒のようなイメージだったので忘れていました。 When we first moved here, I found this bird when I was walking in a park with a group of birders. The bird club members have high-performance binoculars, so they can spot and tell us about birds at a distance. I was so excited at this time that I immediately took a picture of it, but I had forgotten about it because the image was as small as a pea.
カワセミは気合を入れて撮ろうとしないと撮れません。今度は川辺でまさに魚を捕獲したばかりの時とかをキッチリと撮りたいです。 I can’t take pictures of Kingfishers unless I put a lot of effort into it. Next time, I would like to take a picture of a Kingfisher when it has just caught a fish by the riverside.
次にご紹介するのはキツツキです。 The next bird is the Woodpecker.
今回、キツツキ科を調べていたら、無数の種が含まれている事を知り驚きました。私の鳥分類表もさらに巨大化してきたので、ここでは私が撮影できたキツツキのみをリストします。 In researching the Woodpecker family this time, I was surprised to learn that it includes a myriad of species. Here I will list only the Woodpeckers I was able to photograph because my bird taxonomy list has grown even larger.
ちなみに、ゲラとかブッポウソウという分類名も鳥の観察歴が短い私には聞いたことがなく、不思議な名前でした。でも、日本語名としては普通に使われているんだと学習しました。 Incidentally, I had never heard of the taxonomical names “gera” and “buppoosoo” in Japanese language, which were also strange to me, having only a short history of bird observation. But I learned that they are commonly used as Japanese names.
以下、参考として、これらの名前の由来を説明します。 The following is an explanation of the origin of these names for reference.
「ゲラ」は「ケラ」から来ていて、「ケラ」とは木の中に住む虫のことです。江戸時代前から使われていたようです。まさにキツツキのことです。 “Gera” comes from “Kera”, and “Kera” is an insect that lives in trees. It has been used since before the Edo period. It is exactly what a Woodpecker is.

ブッポウソウは日本にやって来る渡り鳥で、5-６月ごろ、たった3週間ほどしか滞在しません。 また、コノハズクは5-６月ごろしか鳴かないフクロウです。The boubou is a migratory bird that comes to Japan and stays for only about three weeks around May and June. The Oriental Scops Owl is also an Owl that only hoots around May and June.
昔の人たちは、この２種の鳥たちを混同し、まだ見た事のない鳥が、まるで「ぶっ・ぽう・そう」と鳴いているようだと思いました。そこでこの幻の鳥をブッポウソウ（仏法僧）と名付けました。 People in the past confused these two species of birds and thought that the bird, which they had not yet seen, sounded as if it were calling “Buh-poh-soh”. Therefore, they named this phantom bird “Buppoosoo” (Buddha’s Prayer).
その後、ラジオが普及してきた1935年頃、この鳥の鳴き声をラジオで放送したところ、反響があり、鳴き声の主はコノハズクであったことが判明しました。でも、すでに定着していた２種の鳥の名前を変えるのは大変なので、そのままの名前が残っているということです。 Later, around 1935, when radio became popular, the bird’s call was broadcast on the radio, and the response from listeners was so strong that it was discovered that the bird call was that of an Oriental Scops Owl. But it would be difficult to change the names of two birds that were already well-established, so the names have remained as they are.

結構神経質な鳥のようです。遠くに車を停めても、車から出るとすぐに飛び去っていってしまいます。 It seems to be quite a nervous bird. They fly away as soon as we come out from the car even if it’s a distance away.
無事に卵が孵化できるよう、しばらく観察しに行かないことにしました。 We decided not to go observe for a while so that the eggs could hatch safely.

巣作りをしている黒いワシ (Common Black Hawk 日本語名はわかりません。）を目撃しました。 We found a nesting Common Black Hawk.
中南米に行くと見られるそうですが、アメリカ合衆国内ではほとんど見られないレアな鳥です。 It is a rare bird that is rarely seen in the United States, although it is said to be seen in Central and South America.
川沿いのコットンウッドの林の中に巣が作られていました。 The nest was built in a cottonwood grove along a river.

昨日の午後、久しぶりの日差しが嬉しくて、スノーキャニオン州立公園に出かけました。 Being so happy to see sunshine after a long time, we went to Snow Canyon State Park yesterday afternoon.
2kg以上ある重いレンズを2本担いで8.3km歩いたので少々疲れましたが、疲れを吹き飛ばすほど嬉しい事がありました。 I was a little tired after walking 8.3 km carrying two heavy lenses weighing more than 2 kg, but there was something that made me so happy that it blew away my fatigue.
その理由は、ムナジロミソサザイに出会えたからです。 The reason for this is that I was able to see Canyon Wrens.
コロラド川沿いのリーズフェリーを訪れた時、一羽を発見して追いかけましたが、雨が降ってきて、いい質の写真が撮れませんでした。 When I visited Lees Ferry along the Colorado River, I spotted one and chased it, but it started raining and I was unable to get a good quality photo.
可愛いでしょ？目下、一番好きな鳥です。 Aren’t they cute? They are my favorite birds at the moment.
でも、翼を広げても17.5cmぐらい、14グラムしかない小さな鳥で、見つけるのは至難の業です。 But it is a small bird, measuring only about 7 inches with its wings spread, and weighing only 0.5oz. It is extremely difficult to spot.
ただ、そんなに小さい鳥なのに、鳴き声はとても大きくて、渓谷に響き渡ります。その鳴き声を頼りに、声の方に歩いて行き、飛んで来そうな岩壁を見つめてじっと待ちました。But for such a small bird, its cry is very loud and echoed through the canyon. We walked toward the voice with the call as our guide and waited patiently, staring at the rock wall where it was about to fly to.
ひとしきり美しく鳴いた後、更に高い岩壁の方に飛び去って行きました。 After beautiful singing and chirping, they flew away toward the higher rock walls.
40-44℃の猛暑です。 It’s been so hot! The high temperatures have been between 105-110°F .
それでも早朝の1-2時間は25℃ぐらいになるので、トレッドミルを卒業し、外を走る方がいいかと思っています。 For one to two hours in the early morning, however, it is still 78°F. So I could graduate from using the treadmill and go outside for my 10k training in the early morning.
動物たちも早朝の涼しい時に活動しています。こちらはハチドリの写真です。いいショットとは言えませんが、ウワッと驚いたので紹介します。 Wild animals are also active in the early morning. These are pictures of a hummingbird in the early morning. They aren’t good quality shots but I was so shocked to see them after I processed them.

ハチドリの口がさらに大きく開きました。花のネクターを吸い取る動作じゃない。 The mouth is now opened much wider. It is not the behavior for them when they suck nectar out from flowers.

虫の羽が嘴の先に見えてます。ハチドリは虫も食べる！ The wings of the bug are sticking out from the tip of the beak. Hummingbirds eat bugs as well!
ヒーラモンスターばかり追いかけていた私たちですが（依然として目撃できてません）、今年になってからまだリクガメに出会っていなかったことに気がつきました。そこで早速チャックワラトレイルを歩いて来ました。約7km。 We’ve been preoccupied on the Gila Monster and forgot about the Desert tortoises. We haven’t seen them this year yet. So we decided to hike on the Chuckwalla trail for about 4 miles.
今日のレンズは 24-70mmです。リクガメですから 800mmレンズは必要ありません。でも、結局リクガメに出会うこともなく、鳥のざわめきも見逃して、ちょっとしょげていた時でした。I brought my 24-70mm lens today because I wanted to capture tortoises. I don’t need an 800mm lens for that. But we couldn’t find any tortoises. So then I was a little upset because I missed all the bird activity without the long lens.
こんな岩の中から鳥の鳴き声が聞こえて来ました。 But then, I heard constant chirping coming from this rock.
鳴き声が逃げて行かないように、そーっと、ゆっくり近づいていきました。岩の中に入って振り返ってみると、いた！産まれたばかりの幼鳥です。 We stealthily walked towards the sound, hoping that whatever was making it did not run away. When I looked inside, then from the inside looked back towards the entrance, OMG! The source of the noise was there, newly born chicks!
きっと孵化してからあまり時間が経っていないんですね。まだ、目が開いてません。でも、鳴き声は威勢よかったですよ。I assume they hatched not so long ago because their eyes weren’t opened yet. But their chirping voices were quite loud.
この子達は一体誰の子供でしょうか。それを確かめるため、洞窟から出てお母さんが餌を咥えてくるのを待ちました。 Whose babies were they? In order to find out who their parents were, we went out from the cave, and waited for the parents to come back to them with food.
もう〜、望遠レンズが無いことを再び悔やみました。この姿でわかるでしょうか。 I couldn’t express enough how much I regretted not bringing my long lens. Can you identify who it is with this shot?
とんがり帽子をかぶっているのが特徴の小さな鳥で、ピニョンやジュニパーなど、低木に住みます。日本には住んでいないので、日本語名がありません。一応ジュニパーティットマウスとしておきます。The Juniper Titmouse is a tiny bird with a crested head living in pinyon or juniper trees。
オークティットマウスにとてもよく似ています。でも、ジュニパーティットマウスは灰色で すが、オークティットマウスは若干茶色がかっています。また、住む場所も違い、ジュニパーティットマウスは700mから2,500ｍぐらいの高地に住みますが、オークティットマウスはカリフォルニアのオークの木に住みます。They look very much like the Oak Titmouse but its color is more pale gray compared to the Oak Titmouse which are more brownish. They also live in different places. The Juniper Titmouse lives in the region of 2,250-8,000 feet elevation in juniper woodlands. On the other hand, the Oak Titmouse lives in Oak trees in California.
日本語名は見つかりません。ウッドハウススクラブジェイはカリフォルニアのスクラブジェイにとてもよく似ていますが、胸の色がもっと灰色がかっています。また、嘴も細いです。The Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay is similar to the California Scrub-Jay, but the chest color is more grayish and the beak is narrower.
ミュール鹿の背中に乗っていることがよくあるらしいです。シカのノミをとってあげている様で共存できているんですね。そんなシーンを是非みてみたいです。 Some say that they can be seen standing on the backs of mule deer. They pick off and eat ticks from the deer, so deer don’t mind them on top of them. How nice to know they help each other. I sure hope to see such a sight one of these days.
４.2ｋｍの短いハイキング。コットンウッドの木々がしげる山道を辿っていくと、いた！ アメリカワシミミズクです。On a short, 2.5 mile long trail through cottonwood trees, we looked for Great-horned owls. There, we found them.

「静かにしてくれる？今、昼寝中。それに今年は子供なし。」 “Be quiet! We are in the middle of napping. And we have no babies this year.”
