It is still a little cold, but spring has already begun.
Today was the day to have the gardener prune large bushes. This is an Oleander before pruning.
And this is the Oleander after pruning. It is much clearer and ready for summer.
This time, however, we were a bit nervous as we watched the pruning. Not only us, but also the dove was anxiously watching the pruning.
It’s because there is a Mourning Dove nest in the rosemary bush in front of the Oleander.
Two weeks ago there was one egg, now there are two. Two heartbeats survived today’s crisis. From now on, we can only pray for their safety to avoid being attacked by birds of prey.
Patagonia is the general term for the land south of the southern 40 degrees in South America. So it straddles both Chile and Argentina.
More than three weeks ago, I visited Patagonia on the treadmill and completed a four-week series of Patagonia Running.
However, about the second week, I felt a problem on my right leg, but ignored it, and continued running. The situation seemed to get worse.
I feel pain around my hip joint depending on how I move it. I have already had an X-ray and there seems to be nothing wrong with the bone.
I went to see a sports specialist, but there was some uncertainty, so I am going to have an MRI scan in a week.
I have not been running since that happened. Well, my body is already aging, so I don’t intend to push myself too hard. But I enjoy running and walking, so I want to keep doing it. That is why I want to fix it now for sure if I can.
We were supposed to go there this December but it has been postponed to next year. If it is just the view from the ship, we could go, but since it is a photo trip, we would like to land in Patagonia and in Antarctica.
I hope that in another 20 months, the animals will be immune and healthy. By then, I will recover my leg and make it even stronger.
A local sculptor commissioned me to photograph his work. He wanted to create a portfolio and a book.
Untouched rough stone
I first visited his studio to get a preliminary look at his work and the light conditions.
I brought two speedlights and 2-3 reflectors on the day of the photoshoot.
I think the shooting at his studio went quite smoothly, even though there were a lot of sculptures to photograph. Of course, Banchan’s support was significant.
In comparison, as expected, it was difficult to photograph the sculptures displayed in his living spaces. Because the 41 kg/90 lb sculpture could not be moved, I had to experiment with different light and angles to complete the project.
This is the second time for me to photograph art work. The last time was mainly monotype, a challenge to photograph a flat surface, but this time it was a sculpture, a task to create a three-dimensional effect with shadows, while at the same time making sure that the shadows were not too harsh.
It was a valuable photo session where I could learn many things while getting paid.
There is a farm designated as an historic park in our town.
We attended the newly started Saturday market, called the Sunrise Market, there yesterday.
It was a beautiful day with hot air balloons in the sky and farm animals.
Banchan’s leg is still not 100%, although he has been recovering well since his surgery on January 3. So he survived the 7-hour market, including setup and tear down, wearing a protective boot.
His result today is one large photo special order. It was a good start in a new place.
I had nothing to do, so I took a walk around the ranch.
It was fun in its own way, buying fresh strawberries, coconut oil, sandwiches for lunch, and a few exotic foods. But the best part of the day was the local honey I finally came across.
This honey is harvested from bees raised near this farm in this town. I have severe hay fever, so honey from local flowers is said to work best for me. Of course, that is not the only benefit of honey, and any honey will do. But for pollen control, it is definitely locally produced honey that is the best. I immediately put this honey in my coffee this morning along with Ceylon cinnamon, and it was delicious~!
I found one egg in a rosemary shrub in a corner of our backyard. It was a small egg, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long.
I had seen two Mourning Doves busily carrying dead branches, so I knew what to expect.
The snow in the Pine Valley Mountains has not yet melted, but the white flowers of the pears are beginning to bloom.
The pulse of spring has already begun to beat fiercely. The restless season has begun!
Tax filing day (April 15) is never forgotten and it will be here again this year. With the results of last year’s income and expenses already in hand, we spent three days finishing sorting through our expenses. It’s a painful task and I can never get used to it, but it is a big relief when it is over.
According to our tax accountant, last year’s tax bill was unexpectedly low.
Great Horned Owl
Hooded Oriole
In addition, we have completed our spending forecast for this year.
I was concerned last year because our expenses were much higher than we had anticipated. But now that I have a clearer idea, I know how to deal with it. And my peace of mind has returned. Organizing your money is just as important as organizing your home and your mind.

Now we are all set. Let’s spend lots of money this year in good spirits, and contribute to the revitalization of the economy!
We volunteered last spring to fall as a research volunteer for the survival study of the tortoises.
The reason for this is that recently there has been a growing movement for tourism to open up even the most desolate wilderness areas. Specifically, we have heard that the BLM (The Bureau of Land Management) is considering to designate an off-road trail to a major recreational tourist road through the land under their jurisdiction near our house. The tortoises are in danger.
So under https://conserveswu.org (Conserve Southwest Utah), we began researching to prove that this is an important habitat for the recluse tortoises.
Tortoise dropping
First, we looked for a place that would be the burrow of a tortoise, and installed a camera that works with a motion sensor there. About 10 units in all. Then, we replaced the memory card once a month, and after that, we reviewed and reported the resulting pictures.
It was no big deal to go out into the vast expanse of land to set up cameras and change memory cards.
But the photo-review and reporting process was something that required enormous patience. This was my first time participating in such a survey and observation activity, and I really felt that it is a tough job.
So you scrutinize 20,000 – 30,000 photos to see what is in them and write it all down on a spreadsheet. If it was a tortoise, I would be motivated, but on the cards I reviewed, 60% had wind-driven grass, 30% had kangaroo and wood rats, the remaining 10% only had ground squirrels and birds, and a dismal 0% had tortoises.
The enormous and monotonous work was agonizing to the point of drowsiness.
When we moved here 4 years ago, we saw them walking along a dirt. Naturally there should be many inhabiting the area, but they may be declining.
Although we didn’t see any tortoises, other volunteers saw plenty. Therefore, the project will continue to be funded for this year.
It has been 18 days since our oven and microwave broke down. No repairs have been scheduled yet.
In the meantime, I am still having trouble with some recipes that I can’t do without an oven.
I subscribe to a meal kit, so once a week I receive 8 servings worth of ingredients. The reason I started using the kits is to learn all kinds of cooking because before I retired I was working all the time and not cooking.
Four years later, I have changed meal kit companies three times. Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, and Marly Spoon, each with different recipes and different levels of difficulty, so I learned a lot.
And now I know the basics of cooking. And not only do I know how to cook, but I also know our food preferences, and I myself don’t want to cook something that takes at most an hour to cook, and no longer more than two hours. So I don’t mind quitting anytime, but it’s hard to give up the convenience of having the ingredients I need packed and delivered to my door.
I have now returned to Hello Fresh, which has the easiest recipes of the three companies.
However, some menu items were included that did call for using the oven to bake the food, so I had to change the method of cooking with my best improvisation. It is a bit tough.
It requires cooking with the oven again this evening. My lame cooking again… Are you laughing at me, Mr. Seal, who is making up the recipe stand.
By the way, this menu stand was originally made in 5 minutes using an empty box.
It’s just for my own use, so I didn’t really care about it, so it’s super sloppy. However, the sloppiness bothered me, so I used a photo of a seal I took a few years ago to make it look a little better.
On February 2nd, while cooking with the oven and microwave, their usual electrical noises stopped. Both just stopped working. Today is the 15th day of our lives without those appliances. What went wrong? We just replaced our old oven/microwave combo with a new one at the end of last year.
The repairman came, and he identified that we need a few parts but one of them is on back order and has not arrived yet.
Since it is an oven/microwave combo, we are unable to use either. We can manage to live without the oven, but for us the microwave is critical.
I use it 5-6 times a day. Here is the breakdown of daily usage.
Boil a cup of lukewarm water first thing in the morning.
Heat small things while cooking.
Heat up leftovers for lunches and/or dinners. I cook a large amount of food 3-4 times a week, and make lunch and dinner boxes out of the left overs.
Boil water for tea in the afternoon and for dinner.
We finally bought an inexpensive microwave because we have no idea how long we will have to wait. Modern conveniences provide us with free time, but it is very inconvenient when they are no longer available.
An oven and microwave that have become huge ornaments. Next to them is a newly bought small microwave. It is working well.
The repairman will probably be able to get it repaired when we forget about them. Well, I guess I should take this as another exercise in patience and calmly wait.
The week before last, as Banchan’s chauffeur, I was walking around his trainer’s neighborhood while waiting. I was curious about the birds.
They may have thought I was suspicious. A person came out of the house in front of which I was standing.
I told him that I was interested in the heron, and he offered to take me to the back of the garden.
From there, of course, I was delighted to see the great blue heron up close. But what excited me even more were his farm animals.
I did not have my camera with me that day, so I visited the next day and took these pictures.
I even got freshly laid eggs that day. Fresh eggs are the best.
I wonder which hen’s eggs they were.
With unexpected encounters like this, a chauffeur-driver business might be a good idea once in a while.
Early this year, on January 3, Banchan had surgery to cut his plantar fascia. The surgery only took an hour, but it will take about 3 months to fully heal. Today we went for a 6-week check-up after the surgery. Recovery is going well, no problems.
However, since the surgery was on his right leg, he is unable to drive or do any outdoor activities at all.
But it’s almost there.
In about 2-3 more weeks, I will be released from his chauffeur duties, too!
Now, the most common medical equipment in these situations is crutches and a knee scooter. He used those two types during his last left surgery.
But this time, instead of a scooter, he used a new product, iWalk 3.0. The best thing about it is that he can walk normally, albeit slowly.
The drawback is that it takes time to put it on. However, it only takes less than 30 seconds. I definitely recommend it.
I am more surprised that there has never been a product like this before. It doesn’t use much technology.
He can gradually put more and more weight on his right leg now, and was encouraged to walk a little more without crutches. So iWalk will no longer be around. Thank you for your service.
This past Sunday, as I was thinking about what I was going to do during my screen-free time, my eyes caught this view in the lower left corner of my desk.
So I decided to clean out the drawers of this file cabinet and move all the contents of the green drawers.
To do that, the drawers on the cabinet side needed to change a little.
I immediately started making boxes, a specialty of mine. Unfortunately, time ran out on Sunday.
The next day, I started it again, but stopped here because the water activated tape ran out.
Later, I became a chauffeur for Banchan’s errands. (He has been unable to drive since the beginning of this year due to foot surgery.) So that was it for yesterday.
And today, even though it’s not finished, I decided to put things in it anyway to see what it looks like. Everything went in nicely. And there is still room.
Under the desk is also a little cleaner now that the green box case is gone.
My huge geek desk is a bit tidier now.
By the way, it is a beautiful sunny day. I like the view from this window.
Here’s one more extra.
Here’s the pile of coasters I made all last year, I’m planning to start selling them again around April at the Saturday market. Until then, I can keep them in the closet, but I’ve been a bit lazy. I guess that’s the challenge for next week’s Screen Free Day.
Well, I’m going to go for a run now.
