最近バンちゃんは雷を撮ることにハマっています。で、私もついでにストームチェイサーに参加しました。Banchan is into Lightning Photography these days. So I joined him and became a storm chaser.
そしてこれが私のデビューショット。And this is my debut shot.
479回シャッターを押して、この一枚だけ辛うじて雷を捉える事ができた貴重なショット。I pushed the camera’s shutter button 479 times, and this is the only shot that captured lightning.
ピカッと光る10分の1秒前にはシャッターボタンを押していないと撮れない。つまり、未来を予測することに等しい。そんな事、できる？ To capture any lightning, you have to start pushing the shutter button one tenth of second before it lit the sky. In other words, you need to predict the future. Can you do such thing?
今朝、夜明け前の空。 This is the sky from right before sunrise this morning.
ザイオン国立公園や、近隣の街では激しい雷雨がありました。バンちゃんは雷の写真を撮るのが好きなので、落雷、豪雨注意報のある場所を目指して出かけました。 We had a thunderstorm near by town and parks like Zion National Park. Banchan likes taking pictures of lightning. So we drove out to places there the weather alerts were on.
389号線、車のフロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雨の中、道路も洪水状態です。It rained so hard that we worried if the front-shield on the car could survibe from it while we run on highway 389. The road was flooded.
雨が治まるのを待ちながら落雷の光る瞬間を捕らえようとしましたが、全滅。タイミングよく光を捕らえるのは、小さな鳥を撮るより難しい。We tried to capture the lightnings when the rain died down time to time, but couldn’t get any of them. It was much harder to capture lightnings than small birds in our cameras.
帰り道、ザイオン国立公園を東口から入って帰路につく計画でしたが、公園内での洪水のため入園止め。思いっきり想定外でした。つまり、再び大きな弧を描いて帰らなければならなくなったのです。 We planned to go back home through Zion National Park from the east entrance, but it was closed off. We didn’t think about it al all, but the park was flooded here and there. So we needed to go back home the way we drove up there by drawing a large arch.
家にたどり着いた時はすでに夜10時すぎ。バンちゃんは疲れ切っていましたが、気分は悪くない。なぜなら、帰途、これまた想定外の自然のプレゼントをもらったからです。そのことに関しては、明日書きます。It was after 10pm when we got back hom. Banchan was so tired from driving but he was rather happy based on my observation. It’s because we’ve received an unexpected present from nature. And I will write all about the present tomorrow.
たった 1.5 時間走っただけで、雪がまだ残っている山道を歩けるなんて最高です。It takes us only 1.5 hours of driving to get here where we could enjoy hiking the trail where snow still remains. How lucky we are!
1500 年も生きている老木は、いつ見てもダンスしてるように楽しそう。The old trees that have lived 1500 years look always to be so happily dancing.
月とダンスしている Dancing with Moon
雨が時折パラつく日でしたが、時々光る景色を求めて清々しいひと時を過ごしてきました。It was a day with an occasional sprinkles, but we enjoyed it very much by looking for shining places illuminated by sunset light.

先週、ネバダ州にあるバレーオブファイヤー州立公園で14番目の月の撮影をしてみました。太陽が沈む前、風景がまだ明るく照らされている時、月を風景の中に入れるのがアイディアでした。アイディアは良かったけれど、出来栄えは50％で、反省点は2つとなりました。We tested shooting one day before the full moon at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. The idea was that we capture the Moon with a well lit landscape before sunset. The satisfaction rate is 50%, and here are the reasons.

1. レンズの選択: これは最悪。24mm-70mm レンズしか持っていかなかったので、月の小ささに対処できなかった。70mm-200mm、もしくは 100mm-400mm レンズがあったら何とかなった。The selection of lenses: This is unforgivable. I didn’t think that the Moon was that tiny, so I brought only my 24mm-70mm zoom lens.
2. 光と焦点の調節: 地平線近くに見える月は、まだ太陽が沈む前だと焦点を合わせられない。空もまだ明るすぎからなのかな。夜空の星を撮る時のようにマニュアル調整してもだめ。でも、せいぜい100キロぐらいしか離れていない山でも、そこに焦点を充てると、地球から38万キロも離れている月もちゃんと撮れる。一定以上の距離の場合は、ｆ値をそんなに上げなくてもいいということをバンちゃんに教えてもらった。The control of light and focus: I am not sure of the exact reasons, maybe because the sky was still so bright, so I couldn’t focus on the Moon at all when it was around the horizon before sunset. I tried manual focus, but it didn’t work. Banchan told me to focus on the most distant mountains although they were only 60 miles away. The Moon is more than 230,000 miles away, yet it worked. We don’t need to raise f-stop so much either for the same reason when it’s beyond a certain distance.

こうして書き並べてみると、自分の準備不足に呆れてしまう。カメラ技術が限りなくゼロに近いように思えます。As I listed up above, I feel I have almost no knowledge of technical photography. I really regretted that I didn’t prepare for this.

とは言え、バンちゃんのアドバイスとLiteRoomの編集で、ある程度のレベルまで持っていけたと思います。Having said that, I still recovered some shots up to a certain level with Lightroom editing.

月が出るのを待っている間のショットの中にはいいものもありました。I found some nice shots while we waited for the Moon to rise.
太陽の光を受けた岩の光の反射が作り出した仄かな光。The gentle reflection light created by rocks getting direct sunlight.
ウェブから10人、前日の抽選会から10人、1日最高20人までが入場を許可されます。 20 people per day total are allowed to enter, 10 from online applications and 10 in person the day before.
トレイルヘッドまでの道は砂地です。だから、オフロード車でも注意しないと埋れてしまいます。だから私たちは安全のためガイドさんを雇いました。 The road to get to the trailhead is through deep sand. Even off-road vehicles could , 8and do, get stuck in there if you don’t know how to drive in sand. So we hired a guide to take us there.
そこからおよそ 2.5 km 、道標もない砂原を歩いて辿り着いたナバホ砂岩のビュート群。ティーピーと呼ばれています。 After about 1.5 miles of hiking, we got to the buttes made of Navajo Sandstone. They are specifically called “Teepees”.
コヨーテビューツの砂岩は見るからに美しく、そして脆い。だから足を踏み入れるのも躊躇するほど。注意深く歩きます。 The sandstones in Coyote Buttes are so pretty and so fragile as you can see. So I hesitated even to step on them and had to be very careful where I stepped.
私たちはガイドに案内されてここまで来られましたが、ガイドがいない人たちは迷った挙句に予期せぬ行動に出るかもしれません。実際、有名な景観が最近破壊されたそうです。 We were able to come this far led by our guide, but I really wondered what people do without a guide. They may walk around not knowing where to go and destroy precious sandstone formations. In fact, this has happened not so long ago.
風化は避けられない。でも、放漫な破壊は避けたい。 The erosion of wind and water creates these fragile formations. That is why we want to avoid unnecessary damage.
ナバホ砂岩はジュラ紀の地層です。その頃、この辺一帯は川が流れる湿地帯でした。だから当然恐竜たちも歩き回っていたんですね。 The Navajo Sandstone is the geological formation formed during the Jurassic period. The area was marshy with a river running through it. So dinosaurs roamed around here as well.
ガイドが指摘してくれなければ存在すら知りませんでした。砂を払い除けると見えてきた恐竜の足跡。 Thank god we had our guide. We even didn’t know of the existence of dinosaur tracks. We blew sand off the surface and revealed many footprints.
2億年前に作られた足跡は、自然の偶然が重なり合って今も残っているんですね。私の想像の世界が4時現世界に入り込んでいました。 It is amazing that we could see the footprints made 200 million years ago because they were protected by layers of rock, until finally revealed again by erosion. My thoughts jumped into the fourth dimension again.
バーミリオンクリフ国定公園は広大で、コヨーテビューツはそのほんの一部でしかありません。見所はほかにもたくさんあり、私の人生の残り時間が気になります。 Vermillion Cliffs National Monument is vast. Coyote Buttes is only a small portion of it. There are so many other interesting places in there, that I wonder if we have time to visit them all during the remaining time in my life.
ともあれ、この素晴らしい自然を保護してくれるこの国に、新しい Canon EOS R5 に感謝して帰途につきました。 In any case, we went back home, being grateful that this country protects areas like this well. I was also grateful that my new camera, Canon EOS R5, worked so well for me.
往復 9km 弱という距離ですが、渓谷に入ると石の上を登ったり、小川を渡ったりするので、予想外に時間がかかります。でも、その分、素晴らしい景色が待っていてくれました。 It’s only 5.5 miles round trip but it took much longer because we needed to cross creeks and maneuver up and down rocks. But it was surely worth it because we could see the magnificent view at the end.
ここはすでにすっかり秋。黄色に光る色は春のように私をときめかせます。 The trail was already well into peak Fall. The golden color on trees makes me so restless like Spring time.
空の雲たちも嬉しそう。Even clouds in the sky looked happy.
渓谷が近い！遠くに見える渓谷がオレンジ色のランプのように見えてきました。 The Canyon must be near. We could see the orange grow like a lamp in the distant canyon.
期待にソワソワ。The orange glow makes me restless again with high expectation.
やっぱり息を飲む美しさ！ Wow, it’s indeed a breathless view!
渓谷は狭く、暗い。上を見上げるとこんな感じ。そんな中でも光を求めて生きようとする姿があります。 The canyon was dark and narrow. When I looked up, I found a little tree on a small shoulder of the wall trying to get every little bit of light to grow up.
どれも素晴らしく難しい選択でしたが、絞り込んだ結果の9枚です。 All shots from the day looked so good that I had a hard time choosing the best. These are the 9 finalists.
予想を遥かに超えた渓谷美でした。帰り道の空。雲たちも秋の青空で踊っていました。 The canyon view was far beyond my expectation, and I was happier than ever. The clouds in the fall blue sky were also dancing with joy .
また、EOS R5とRFレンズは、カメラ調整をすっかり忘れてしまうほど、シャカシャカと撮れて満足です。 By the way, the camera and lens were fabulous. I totally forgot to adjust the camera settings yet they gave me great results.
キャノンの EOS R5 は発売前から大騒ぎ。発売されてからもバックオーダーで、1ヶ月以上待たされました。 The expectation was so high for Canon’s new camera, EOS R5. Therefore, the demand was so high that I couldn’t get it for more than a month after I ordered it.
これが R5 です。 But now it’s here!
新しいミラーレスの世界。The world of Mirrorless has arrived.
今までのレンズもこのカメラに使えるんですが、アダプターが必要です。でも、そのアダプターも需要度が高すぎて、バックオーダーです。そこで唯一買った R5 専用の RF800mm レンズをつけてテストショットをしてみました。 We can use EF lenses for this camera as well but it requires an adapter. Because of the high demand, I don’t know when I can get EF to RF lens adapter yet. So, I decided to try out a new lens, the RF800mm.

三脚無し、800ｍｍレンズを手で持って撮れるって、今までは夢の世界でしたが、ミラーレスの軽さとスタビライザーのおかげでしょうか。ブレてない。It’s unbelievable that I can hold 800mm lens in my hands, and be able to take picture like this without tripod.

バンちゃんのミラーレス用のRF24-70mmレンズを借りて、さらなる手振れテスト。I took a few pictures to test the image stabilization by borrowing Banchan’s new mirrorless lens, the RF24-70mm.
ISO 100, 70mm, f/8.0, 1/80 sec. 中庭。EOS Mark IV での1/200秒ぐらいないとブレが出ることを考えると、全然悪くない。 A courtyard shot. Not bad at all comparing to my usual 1/200 sec. with EOS Mark IV.ISO 100, 70mm, f/8.0, 1/8 sec. 中庭。1/8 秒では流石にぶれてます。My favorite cortyard sitting area. It was too much to ask not to be blurry with 1/8 sec.
ところで、写真編集段階になって初めて気づきました。私の使っているLiterooomにはROW/CR ファイルはインポートできない！！！だから、JPEGで撮りました。 By the way, I realized that my Lightroom version doesn’t handle the R5 ROW/CR files when I wanted to edit them in Lightroom!!! Ugh. So I took these pictures with JPEG.

Lightroomを対応バージョンにアップデートする為には、まずMacOSをCatalinaにしなくてはいけないんです。ついにこんな日が来てしまいました。このMacBook Proは2014年に購入し、必要以外極力アップデートは避けてきたんですが、今回ばかりは仕方がない。次回からのブログ写真は、カタリーナからになります。Apparently, I need to update my MacOS to Catalina first before updating Lightroom. I know a day will come eventually that I have to update MacOS, but I refuse to update as much as I could for not only OS but other apps as well to avoid compatibility issues. I guess I can’t anything but surrender. My pictures for this blog will be uploaded via Catalina from next time.
こんな風景を目撃した時、私の世界はトキと共に時間を超えていると思いました。忘れられない心象風景のようです。- I was shocked to see such a sight. I thought I traveled back in time with an Ibis. The scene was like an image deep in my mind, a forgotten memory.
羽の色が何色もあるのに落ち着く色ですね。色ありでもシルエットでも美しい。どっちの方が私好みかな。そう、白黒写真にしたら、日本画になりそうです。- The Ibis feather’s contain so many colors, yet are so soft and calm. It’s beautiful in both color or as a silhouette. Let me think which one I like more. Yes, that’s it. It could be a Japanese painting if I make it a monochrome picture.
ベアレイク野生動物保護区でなくてもトキには出会えますが、じっくりと向き合ったのは今回初めてのような気がします。- We don’t need to come to Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge to see Ibis, but it happened to be the first time for me to face it like this.
このブログポストの日本語名、「トキ」と時間の「時」を掛け合わせてみました。- The Japanese blog post title is a pun. Ibis in Japanese is “Toki”. Time in Japanese is also “Toki”. The difference is the accent. And, of course, the written characters are different as well.
彗星、もういい加減見飽きたかなと思いながら、昨夜、シーダーブレイクス国定公園に行きました。ビジターセンターには10人から20人ほどの人がすでに三脚を並べて待っていました。夜9時半過ぎでもまだ明るい。- I asked myself, “didn’t I have enough with the comment already?” Still we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument last night. When we got there, 10 – 20 people were there already at the visitor center view point with tripods and cameras. It was still so bright even after 9:30pm.
10時過ぎ、誰かが「見えた！」と叫びました。それがかけ声となり、みんな一斉にカメラのファインダーを覗き始めました。- A little past 10:00pm, someone shouted “I can see it now!” And everyone started looking through the camera viewfinder.
スッキリとしたコメット。まだ日暮れどきの明かりがあるのに、肉眼でもキッチリ見えるのは、海抜 3,000m 以上だからですね。C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE)彗星が次に地球接近してくれるのは 7,000 年後だと言われています。- It was a crisp and clear Neowise comet. Because of the location, higher than 10,000 feet above sea level, we could see it with our naked eyes even before dark. C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) comet will come close to earth again in 7,000 years.
10時15分ごろ、回りを見渡すとまだ早いけど、天の川が幽かに見えます。そして、カメラマン達もまだまだ頑張っている様子。下の写真、左下に見えるのはブライアンヘッドピークです。峰に光が点滅しているところを見るとまだまだこぞってコメットを見に登っているようです。ここよりさらに450ｍも高い場所です。- Around 10:15pm, I could see faintly the northern end of the Milky Way. Many photographers were still there for even better shots. In the image below, you can see a little hill at the lower left with lights on it in two lines. It’s called Brian Head Peak, 450 feet higher than the visitor center. The lights outline the road going to the top. I can imagine that many more people were there than at the visitor center because it is higher.
コメットを撮るというより、この場所に行けたことに感謝したら、優しい気持ちになりました。- I was a little relaxed last night. Instead of taking the comet pictures, I was simply grateful for being there. I know, for sure, I cannot repeat seeing this particular comet in my lifetime and neither can all the people living on earth right now. Then I felt the kinship with all the people and living creatures of earth.
駐車場にて、最後のショットです。車が行き来する中、面白い効果が出ていた中での一枚です。中央少し下の大きく光る星は木星、そしてそのすぐ左横にあるのが土星。南側から流れ出る天の川が一番綺麗に撮れます。標高 3,000m の星は、爽やかに光っていました。- The image below is the last shot from the visiter center parking lot. I got interesting effects every time a car came by with headlights and taillights on. The shining star at the center is Jupiter, and Saturn is just to the left. I think that the southern end of the milky way shows the definition much better than the other end. The stars at 10,000 feet were shining clearer and crisper than ever.
明日から一週間ほどお休みします。- I’ll have a break for a week beginning tomorrow.
バンちゃんが「コメットが見えてるよ。」と叫んだので、裏庭に走りました。視力が良くない私の目ではうっすらですが、見えました。「なんだ、遠くまで出かけなくても見えるんじゃん。」と、私。 – “We can see the comet from here now!” said Banchan, so I ran to the backyard. My eyesight is not so good, but I could vaguely see it with my naked eyes. “Wow, we didn’t need to go out so far away after all.” I said.

その後、レンズをワイドに切り替えて天の川にチャレンジしました。カシオペア座がレッドクリフの上に見えます。かすかに斜めに広がる天の川。ご近所さんの外套がたくさんありすぎて、やっぱりダメですね。レッドックリフの右横には私たちのＭVロックが小さく見えます。そしてその横の赤くなっている空は、なんと30km ほど北で起こっている火事です。月曜日から燃え続けていて、まだ鎮火されていません。- I changed the lens to wide angle and attempted to take the milkyway shots. I see Cassiopeia above the red cliff. The milkyway runs diagonaly from there but not so clearly. The illumination lights from neighbor’s houses made it too bright here for astrophotography. Going back to the picture below, our MV rock is visible right next to the red cliff. And next to MV rock on the right is red sky. It’s surprisingly from a fire about 20 miles north of here which started on Monday.

場所を移動して中庭から空を見上げると、ここでも星がわ〜っと降って来ています。北斗七星がオコティーヨの上に広がっているのが見えるでしょうか。- I relocated myself to the courtyard. Looking up at the sky, I thought so many stars are falling on me like rain, and I saw the Big Dipper right above an ocotillo plant.

昨日は夜になっても38度もある暑い日でした。オコティーヨに空から水をあげたらきっと喜びます。ついでに北斗七星さん、北の方の火事にもキラキラ光る星の水をかけて鎮火させてください。- The temperature was above 100F even after sunset last night. The ocotillo will love to have a shower from the Big Dipper. And please, Mr. Big Dipper, pour shining star water on top of the fire as well to extinguish it.
カメラ設定練習と場所の選定のため、昨夜、NEOWISE コメットを見に行って来ました。レンズの焦点を星に設定するのって、無限大だとばかり思ってたら、違ったのね。バンちゃんに設定方法を教えてもらった結果、こちらがコメットの写真。- We went out to see the NEOWISE comet last night to find a good location for viewing and to practice setting up the camera for astrophotography. I thought the infinity focus setting should work for, but I was wrong. Banchan showed me how to set the focus in a few steps, and this is the result of my first comet shot!

10時半頃から天の川が見えて来ました。- Around 10:30pm, the milky way became visible nicely.

もっと撮っていたかったんですが、コヨーテのような野生動物の遠吠えが1-2匹どころか、たくさん聞こえて来たので、怖くなって逃げ帰って来ました。最後に見たコメットは、山に沈む寸前でした。ジョシュアツリーのシルエットが、なぜかピカソのドンキホーテの絵を連想させてくれた。- I wish I could stay there longer, but I heard some wild animals like Coyotes howling. It wasn’t one or two of them, but many. So I got quite scared, and ran back to our car. This is the last shot of the comet. It was almost touching the hill. The Joshua Tree silhouette reminded me of Picasso’s Don Quixote pictures somehow.
