C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) 見えた！ – I Could See It!

カメラ設定練習と場所の選定のため、昨夜、NEOWISE コメットを見に行って来ました。レンズの焦点を星に設定するのって、無限大だとばかり思ってたら、違ったのね。バンちゃんに設定方法を教えてもらった結果、こちらがコメットの写真。- We went out to see the NEOWISE comet last night to find a good location for viewing and to practice setting up the camera for astrophotography. I thought the infinity focus setting should work for, but I was wrong. Banchan showed me how to set the focus in a few steps, and this is the result of my first comet shot!

10時半頃から天の川が見えて来ました。- Around 10:30pm, the milky way became visible nicely.

もっと撮っていたかったんですが、コヨーテのような野生動物の遠吠えが1-2匹どころか、たくさん聞こえて来たので、怖くなって逃げ帰って来ました。最後に見たコメットは、山に沈む寸前でした。ジョシュアツリーのシルエットが、なぜかピカソのドンキホーテの絵を連想させてくれた。- I wish I could stay there longer, but I heard some wild animals like Coyotes howling. It wasn’t one or two of them, but many. So I got quite scared, and ran back to our car. This is the last shot of the comet. It was almost touching the hill. The Joshua Tree silhouette reminded me of Picasso’s Don Quixote pictures somehow.

野草ビンゴ – Wildflower Bingo

先週金曜日にシーダーブレイクス国定公園で野草フェスティバルがあったので、すでにピークは過ぎていましたが、行って来ました。- We went to the Wildflower Festival at Cedar Breaks National Monument on Friday last week. The peak of the wildflower season had passed, but it was still nice.

特別な催しがあるわけではなく、野草ビンゴの花を求めて散策するというものでしたが、楽しかったです。- There wasn’t any special organized event. People simply walked around the park and, based on the Wildflower Bingo sheet shown below, marked off flowers you saw.  But it was surprisingly fun.

Oregon Fleabane を見落としましたが、他は全てカバーしました！以下、私バージョンのビンゴシートですが4枚の代用写真があります。- We missed Oregon Fleabane but we covered all other items.  The pictures below show my version of the bingo sheet where I had replaced four items.

  • Oregon Fleabane の代わりに Orange Sneezeweed。- Orange Sneezeweed in place of Oregon Fleabane.
  • ビジターセンターの代わりにマーモットの赤ちゃん。- A Yellow-bellied Marmot baby in place of the Visitor Center.
  • パークレンジャーの代わりにバンちゃんの足跡の上に立つマーモット。- A Yellow-bellied Marmot on top of Banchan’s footprint in place of a Park Ranger.
  • 星条旗の代わりにブリスタルコーン。- Bristlecone pine in place of American flag. 

これだけの野草の名前を覚えたら、これからのハイキングがもっと楽しくなりますよね。- If I could memorize all these flower names, it will make my hiking even more fun.  

ところで、ハイマツとトウヒの区別ができてなくて、前回のブログでも逆に名前をつけてました。でも、今回のビンゴゲームで少し学習できたようです。ハイマツの松かさは上に付き、トウヒは下に付きます。幹も横と縦など、違いが少しわかるようになりました。- By the way, I mixed up Subalpine fir with Engelmann Spruce in my previous blog and labeled them backwards.  With this bingo game, I studied more the differences between these two.  For example, pine cones grow upwards on Subalpine fir and downwards on Engelmann spruce.  And the tree trunks also have horizontal lines on Subalpine fir and vertical lines on Engelmann spruce.

ビー玉ゴロゴロ -Marbles Everywhere

早朝、スノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。このビー玉を撮るためです。ぎっしりと歩く場所もないほども積もった小さなビー玉より少し大きめの丸い石。- I went to Snow Canyon State park early morning because I wanted to take pictures of marbles.  They were everywhere leaving so little space for me to step.

こちらはまだ岩から分離されてない状態。- These are still attached to the rock.

これはコンクリーションと言います。一度、この事を書きました。私の中ではまだ未消化だったので、もう少し調べてみました。Moqui Marblesとも言うそうです。そして、思いがけない記事を発見しました。- It’s called concretions. I wrote about it once before, but I felt I needed to research more, so I did.  It’s also called Moqui Marbles.  And I found an interesting article.

発見した記事は、火星探査機、ローバーが送ってきた数枚の写真についてです。ＮASAは画像の物体を不思議がり、ブルーベリーというニックネームをつけました。そこにはスノーキャニオンのビー玉のようなものが写っていたんですね。確かにこんな光景だったらブルーベリーと名付けてもおかしくない。- The article is about a few pictures from NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity.  The researchers at NASA were so puzzled with the objects in the images, which they called “Blueberries”.  They have found small rocks like Snow Canyon’s Moqui Marbles in them.   Indeed, in the picture below, they do look like blueberries.  

スノーキャニオンのコンクリーションは、火星のものとは違い赤鉄鉱でできていますが、出来方は同じなのではないかという仮説があります。ここの Moqui Marble、火星のブルーベリー。遠く離れていても、自然の仕組みは同じなのでしょうか。そうだとしたら、とても面白い！- The concretions in Snow Canyon are made of hematite, unlike the ones at Mars. Some researchers think, however, that the process of creating them is the same.   We call them as Moqui Marbles on Earth and Blueberries on Mars.  It is very exciting to think that the mechanism of nature is the same even though Earth and Mars are worlds away.

マーモットの丘 – Marmot’s Hill

午後5時過ぎ、シーダーブレイクス国定公園に再びやってきました。マーモットをしっかり撮るためです。だから、重い望遠レンズや三脚を背に高度 3,000m もある山道を登りました。- We visited Cedar Breaks National Monument again yesterday, because I wanted to take better quality pictures of Yellow-bellied Marmots.  So I hiked up the hill with several lenses, including a heavy long telephoto lens, and a tripod.

ブリスタルコーンパインを撮るために来たバンちゃんと別れ、静かに、ゆっくりと歩きます。すると、マーモットがピョコリと姿を現しますが、2度も撮り損ねてしまいました。そこで、三脚を設置してじっくり待つことにしました。- After saying goodbye to Banchan who went there to take photos of Bristlecone Pine Trees, I walked slowly and quietly.  A marmot popped his head up twice but I missed both opportunities.  So I decided to set up my tripod and wait until it showed up again.  

20分経過。ついに出て来てくれました。野草や木の芽などを食べに来たんですね。- Twenty minutes passed by. Finally, a marmot appeared on a slope to eat wild flowers and nuts.  Yay!

その後8時半過ぎまでブリスタルコーンパインを撮りに行った帰り道、まだいてくれるに違いないという気がしていました。そして、やっぱり、いました。でも、なんと驚いたことに家族全員勢ぞろいです！ – Then, I joined Banchan to photograph pine trees till a little after 8:00pm.  On the way back, I had a feeling that the marmot was still there.  And, indeed, he was there. But this time, he had company. The entire family was there as well!

マーモットの赤ちゃんたちが崖の上から夕日を眺めています。こんなクリスマスと誕生日が一気にやって来たような幸運ってあるでしょうか。- Two baby marmots were enjoying the sunset view from the cliff.  We were so lucky to have had such a golden opportunity.  It’s like Christmas and my birthday combined.

もちろん、左右の崖からお父さんもお母さんも子供達を見守るように座っていました。- Their mother and father guarded them, sitting on rocks to the  left and right side of the rock that the babies were on.

以下、マーモット家族の夕暮れ時のお話です。- And now, a short story of the Marmot Family Around Sunset.

夕日を眺めていた赤ちゃんのマーモットたちは、眠くなって寝てしまいました。そこへ、お兄さんたちがやって来ます。- Marmot babies, looking at the sunset, got tired and went to sleep soon after.  Their brothers then came over.

「もうすぐお母さんが来るんだよ。起きろ〜！」- “Wake up!  Mom will come over soon.”

お兄さんが言ったとおり、お母さんが来てくれました。みんな嬉しそう。- Their brother was right that their mom came over soon after.  Everyone looked so happy with her.

「お母さん、大好き！」”I love you Mom!”

その後、お母さんはお父さんと合流します。Mom then joined Dad on his rock.

「お父さん、子供たち、お腹が空いているから、食べ物調達して来てくださいね。」”Dear, would you go and get food for them now?  They are quite hungry.”

「はいよ！」と、お父さんは毎日の日課なので気軽に腰を上げて出かけます。- “Sure thing!” said he without any hesitation and started walking.

その間、崖に残っていた3匹のうち2匹の子供達は寝てしまいます。でも、1匹はまだ遊びたくて仕方がありません。- In the meanwhile, of the three baby marmots left on the hill, two went back to sleep again. But one of them still had a lot of energy and wanted to play some more.

そこで、お兄さんの所へ。まだ歩き方がしっかりしていないのか、後ろ足の上げ方が変ですが、御構い無しです。- So, he went to see his older brother.  Is it because he was still young that his hind leg doesn’t look right when he walked?  But he didn’t care.

「遊ぼう！」 -“Let’s play!”

「わーい！」-“Yahoo!”

急に賑やかになったので、お母さんから「崖から落ちないように気をつけてね！」と注意されます。- “Just pay attention to the cliff!” said their mom noticing them rolling around and having fun.

もう1匹も目を覚まして、仲間に入れてもらいに来ました。- One more baby woke up and joined the fun.

「何してるの？」「あのね、ナイショ、ナイショ。」- “Whatcha doing?” “Can’t say, it’s a secret.”

一人残された一番小さい赤ちゃんは、少し不安げです。- The smallest and youngest looked worried because he was left alone.

大丈夫。きっと、もうすぐお父さんが帰って来てくれるよ。- That’s all right.  Dad will come back real soon.

ここがマーモット家族の住むシーダーブレイクス国定公園の丘。マーモットたちはこうして暖かい陽を浴びて一日の最後を送るのでした。おしまい。- This is the hill where the marmot family lives in Cedar Breaks National Monument.  They end each day in this way, enjoying the warmth from the last rays of the sun.  The End.

世界で一番古い木 – The Oldest Tree In The World

コロラド高原の西南端に位置するシーダーブレイクス国定公園は高度 3000メートル以上もあります。だから、まだ雪が所々に残っていますが、ようやく春がやってきました。- Cedar Breaks National Monument is located at the west edge of the Colorado Plateau. The elevation of the rim is over 10,000 feet.  So snow is still on the ground here and there, but Spring has finally come as well.

トウヒ – Engelmann Spruce

そんな寒い場所でもちゃんと育っている木々は5種類ぐらいあるそうです。- There are five kinds of trees that live under conditions in this park. Two of them are Engelmann Spruce and Subalpine fir.

ハイマツ – Subalpine fir

そして、2,000年以上も生きてきたブリスタルコーンという松の木もその中の一つです。- Another are Bristlecone Pine Trees, some of which have lived more than 2,000 years.

ブリスタルコーンパインといえば、カリフォルニアのホワイトマウンテンが有名です。5,000年も生きてきたものもあるそうです。ここと同じような生息環境で、高所で寒い。そして地質も同じように悪く、石灰岩や苦灰岩を含むクラロン層です。だから他の植物は生えにくい。灰の中から生まれる木、ちょっと不死鳥を連想させますね。- When we talk about Bristlecone Pines, the White Mountains in California is famous.  In one grove there, some individual trees have lived more than 5,000 years.  The habitat is the same, high altitude, very low precipitation, and nutrient poor rocks and soil (limestone and dolomite in Claron formation.)  Because of such harsh environments, not many plants can live there.  A tree born from ashes… it reminds me of a Phoenix which is re-born from ash.

松かさが生長するまで2年かかります。-It takes two years to grow pine cones fully.

降水量もわずかなので、エネルギーを究極まで節約しながら、ゆっくりと生きています。  – Because the precipitation is also very low, they save energy to the ultimate, and grow amazingly slowly.

モコモコと松葉で覆われてで可愛い枝。こちらはまだ若い木で、私より少し高い木です。でも、すでに私よりずーっと長く生きているはずです。40年間で15ｃｍというゆっくり生長速度で計算すると、多分400年以上生きていることになります。- Aren’t they cute fluffy branches full of pine needles?  This is a young tree only a little taller than me.  But its age is much older than I am.  It grows less than 6 inches in 40 years.  Based on this fact, the simple calculation tells me it is older than 400 years old.

何千年もの時を超える想像は、私を優しくしてくれる気がします。- Thoughts of an organism living thousands of years makes me ever so humble.

ブリスタルコーンの影とフードゥー -a shadow of Bristlecone pine and hoodoo.

白いドロマイトに落としたぶりスタルコーンの影。シーダーブレイクのフードュー達とブリスタルコーンはこんな風に対話しながら、私たちの世代がいなくなった後もずーっと生き続けていくんですね。- The shadow of a Bristlecone on white dolomite makes me think that Hoodoos and Bristlecone Pine Trees at Cedar Breaks have communed with each for thousands of years, and will continue to do so for a long time even after all of us die.

 

風を撮る – Capture wind

風の強い日、アスペンの木がたくさんある場所に行ったので、アスペンと風を撮りたくなった。日本語名は「ヤマナラシ」。由来は風が吹くとサラサラと葉がこすれあうところから、山をならす木というところでしょうか。- On a strong windy day, we went to a place with many aspen trees.  So I tried to capture the wind.  The Japanese name of the tree indicates it very well, “the trees ring the mountain with the rustling of leaves” by winds.

走っている車の中からのショットなので、画質悪い。それでも、この写真を見ていると風の音、アスペンの葉擦れの音が蘇ってくるよ。- The quality of shots are bad because they were from a moving car, but it refreshed my memory and I could hear the “ringing mountain” sounds.

次回は三脚を使わなくちゃ。シャッタースピードを落として、私のイメージしたものを撮るぞ。- I have an image now of what I want to capture. The challenge accepted.  I will use a tripod and set the shutter speed low, and try again.

真夜中のパーティー – Midnight Party

ステルスカメラと小さな水瓶を前庭に設置しました。野生動物を観察するためです。- We have set up a stealth camera and a water bowl in our front yard in order to observe wild animals.

まずはロードランナー。- The first character was a roadrunner. 

ウズラの家族。- Then a quail family.

夜にはカンガルーラット。- A kangaroo rat appeared at night.

でも、昼夜問わず、なんと言ってもウサギが大半でしょうか。　- But almost always rabbits appear all day and all night at any hour of the day.

ステルスカメラは一日約1000枚撮影しますが、そのうち990枚がウサギです。こうしてまさに井戸端会議状態です。- The stealth camera takes about 1000 shots per day, and 990 shots are rabbits. They are socializing by the bowl like this.

ところが、この夜は特別でした。- But then, last night was very different.

ウソ！ネコ？違うよ。ボブキャットが夜食を咥えて歩いてる！ – What? Is it a cat?  No!!! A bobcat is walking with a mid-night snack in his mouth!

ウサギばかりでうんざりしていたら、一気に大逆転ホームランです。噂に聞いていたボブキャットですが、やっぱりいたんですね。この家が建っている場所、カエンタ層にちなんでカエンタと名付けました。- We had grown tired of deleting the rabbit pictures. But this exciting incident changed our enthusiasm for the stealth cam.  We’ve heard from neighbors that there are bobcat here, but didn’t take it seriously until now.  Bobcats really exist!  We decided to call him Kayenta as our house sits on Kayenta formation.

そして、再び平和にウサギの井戸端会議が再開しました。- Then, the rabbit social started peacefully again.

 

 

 

マーモット – Marmot

キバラマーモット、目撃したのは2回目、写真に収めたのは初めてです。シーダーブレイク国定公園を散策中に崖から登ってきました。- A Yellow-bellied marmot.  This is my second time witnessing, but the first time capturing this animal in my camera.  It came out from a cliff at Cedar Breaks National Monument while we were hiking on a trail.望遠レンズがなかったので、質は悪いんですが、雰囲気わかりますよね。- Unfortunately, the quality is not good because I didn’t have a telephoto lens.  Even so, I think you can still understand the general features.

キバラマーモットはシーダーブレイク (富士山と同じぐらいの高度）のような高所に生息し、約80%を巣穴で過ごすそうです。20％の外出中に出会えて良かった。- Yellow-bellied marmots live at higher altitude places like Cedar Breaks, 10,000 feet, and spend 80% of their lives in their burrows.  I am glad we met him during the 20% of the time he was out.

秘境 – Hidden Gems

ヤントフラットはほとんど知られていないため、人が訪れることはあまりありません。しかも、夏、40度を超えるような時に行く人はいないでしょう。- Not many people visit Yant Flat because it is not widely known.  On top of that, who wants to be there in the summer when it is over 100 degrees? 

トレイルヘッドから往復で約8ｋｍ、着いてから歩き回ることを考えると9ｋｍほど。暑くなる前に帰ってきたかったので、朝6時半に出発しました。- The hike was about 6 miles, including wondering around the cliffs.  We set out at 6:30 am in order to get back before it got too hot.   

そして突然姿を表す光景に、たいていの人は「わ〜！！！」と感嘆の声を上げるはずです。- I am sure that most people can’t help it but say “Wow~!” when they see the site suddenly appear in front of them.

でも、こんなものではなく、その先に行くともっと息を飲む光景が現れます。- But that’s not all.  If you walk deeper into the flat, you can’t find words to say about the site.

流れる岩。The rock flows.

その昔、海底だったこの地の岩はみんな流線型です。- All rocks around there are streamlined shapes because it was under the sea once upon the time.

ナバホ砂岩の鉄分が酸化されてできた赤やオレンジなどの色。それが綺麗な模様を作り出してきたんですね。- The red and orange color on the Navajo sandstone are from iron oxide.  It creates beautiful designs.

2億年という長い年月を経て、大地が揺れるたびに形を変え、風雨が滑らかな形を作り上げてきました。- It changed shape every time earth shakes, and rain and wind refined the shapes over 200 million years.

静かにただそこに在る秘境、ヤントフラットでした。My hidden gem, Yant Flat, simply exists there quietly.

セルフィー – Selfie

宇宙のことを考えていたら、頭の中がグニャグニャになってしまった。だから、久しぶりに友人に撮ってもらった写真でもご紹介します。- I’ve been thinking about Space to the point that my head is going to explode!  So, I am going to show pictures of me that my friend took, for a change.

一昨日、Yant Flat に行きました。(明日、その時の写真をご紹介します。) こんな所に身を置くと、アリになっような気がします。- We went to Yant Flat two days ago.  (I’ll write about it tomorrow.)  I was an ant in such a vast place.

一緒に行った友人と。わー、すっかり日焼けしてる。- With my friend.  Wow, I got tanned a lot.

そして、こちらはセルフィー。気持ちいい〜！- And this is a selfie.  I feel good!

ヘビの求婚ダンス – Courtship Dance of the Snakes

五月のある昼下がり、訳のわからない物体が道の真ん中で動いていました。- One afternoon in May, we saw a strange creature in the middle of a dirt road.

近づいて見ると、なんと2匹のムチヘビです。ケンカをしているのかと思ったら、どうやら求婚ダンスの真っ最中だったようです。- As we got closer to it, we realized that it was not one, but two coachwhip snakes.  I thought they were fighting, but actually it was a courtship dance.

2匹は、お互いの動きに合わせてダンスをしているよう。しかも延々と続きます。- The two snakes danced, moving their bodies synchronously together for a long long time.

ついに彼らのダンスは道から逸れていきましたが、こういう時は周りが見えてないのかもしれません。私たちのことも、あまり気にしてなかったみたい。どうぞ、タカなどに注意してくださいね。- Thank god they moved out from the road finally, even though they didn’t care about anything around them.  They didn’t even care about us taking pictures from such a close distance.  Please pay attention to things around you, especially predators like hawks.

トカゲの国の大相撲 – Sumo Wrestling in Lizard Country

日本語名はわかりません。こちらシマウマ縞のシッポの Zebra-tailed lizardです。- This is a Zebra-tailed lizard.

大抵は、こんな姿をしてますが、先日は様子が変でした。喉が大きく膨らんだり、しぼんだり、また、体の色も結構鮮やかです。- You see it like this normally, but it was very strange the other day.  The throat swelled so large and shrunk repeatedly.  Look at the color of the body.  It looks brighter.

その後まもなく2匹のトカゲの登場です。私とばんちゃんの朝ごはん中、奇妙な動きを始めました。2匹ともオスのようなので、求婚行動ではないです。- Soon after that, two of them appeared in front of us while we were eating breakfast.  It’s not mating since both of them were male.

お互い、見合ってます。- They were looking at each other.

近づいていきますが、物別れに終わったようです。どうやら片足を立てるのが先頭準備のしるしのようですが、両者ともに準備できていません。- They got closer, but nothing happened.  Apparently they both need to be ready for action to begin.  One of them had one hind leg raised. It’s a sign of being ready for a fight. The other did not, and it means he wasn’t ready.

また、見合ってます。- They were looking at each other.

でも、やはり物別れに終わりました。- Oh, again, nothing had happened.

どうやら、タイミングが合ってないようです。こんなことを何度も繰り返して、延々30分以上です。- It seems they weren’t sync’d yet.  They repeated the same actions over and over for more than a half hour.

さて今回は両者とも、結構いい感じ。何がいいのかわかりませんが気合が入っているようです。- Let’s see, it looks good this time.  I am not sure what is good for them, but both looked ready to go.

ハッケヨイ、のこった、のこった*！- (Note*: Sumo wrestling words used by the referee at the beginning of fight meaning roughly “Ready, fight well, go!”)

どちらが勝者かわかりませんが、終了しました。（ばんちゃんによると、長いシッポの方が勝ったとのこと。）- It ended although I didn’t understand which one won.  (according to Banchan, the long tail won.)

相撲は呼吸が合うまで仕切り直しをするので、時間がかかる競技です。でも、いざ始まると一瞬で勝負がつきます。クビワトカゲの戦闘シーンはまさに相撲です。そうか、これがトカゲの国の相撲なんですね。- Sumo wrestling requires a long time to start fighting because both wrestlers repeat the get ready position until they are in sync.  Once they are sync’d, the fighting is done really quickly. Some end in a second.  The Great Basin Collard lizards’ wrestling was just like Sumo wrestling.  I see, this is how Sumo wrestling goes in the lizard country.
