セイントジョージに去年引っ越して来て以来、ありとあらゆる物から感動をもらいました。小さな生き物から、大きな生き物、大自然の美しさ、怖さ。毎日が驚きと感動でいっぱいでした。一年後の今でも自然は深く魅力的です。中でも最近特に心を奪われているものが石です。- I have lived in St George, Utah for about a year now.  Since then, nature gave me a variety of impressions, and I am awed by them.  I have found something new every day from tiny bugs, to large creatures, the beauty, and the power of nature.  They are still so mysterious and fascinating to me.  And now, I have discovered a new thing on top of these things. Rocks.

石、そんな物に興味を持つようになるとは想像もしていませんでした。- I never imagined that I would be interested in rocks this much.

ここで見られる石は主にナバホ砂岩層とケヤンタ層の堆積岩です。ジュラ紀の1.7 – 1.9 億年ごろに形成されました。- St Goerge and nearby areas expose mainly Navajo Sandstone and Kayenta formations.  They are from the Jurassic period, about 170 – 190 million years ago.

それが、少し場所を移動すると三畳紀からカンブリア紀、2 – 5 億年まで遡ってできた地層を見ることができます。- If you go farther out from St George, you could see many more strata from Triassic to Cambrian periods, 200 – 500 million years ago.

つい先日訪れた秘密の場所では（地質学者の間では有名ですが。）なんと、原生代の地層に出会うこともできました。10億年以上も前、単細胞がようやく生まれてきた頃。ここ、セイントジョージが所属するコロラド高原は、まだ海の中でした。- We were so lucky that we could find strata from Proterozoic period where we visited a secret place, although it’s not secret among geologists.  This period is from one billion years ago, the time single or multi cellular living things started appearing on earth.  The Colorado plateau where St George belongs, was still in a water.

こんなに長い歴史の中では、私の存在どころか人間の存在などぶっ飛んでしまいます。少し大げさに言えば、宇宙の誕生につながる、地球の始まりに近い痕跡のある石に出会った！そんな石を眺めると胸が弾けてしまうほど感動します。 – In such a long earth history, our human history is a flicker of imagination.  To stretch the expression a little, the rock allows us to trace the beginning of earth, and expand our imagination to the beginning of space.  Such a notion blows my mind, and when I gaze at rocks my heart starts pounding faster with joy.

地質学の知識ゼロの私が、高校の地学のクラスでは居眠りをしていた私が、今、石の物語が知りたくて、手探りで勉強し始めました。これから、不定期的にサンプルとして持ち帰って来た石の話を少しづつ書いていきたいと思っています。 –  I never cared about geology and slept through the geology classes during high school.  Therefore, I still have nearly zero knowledge of geology.  But I have started studying about it because I want to know the stories of rocks. So I will write about my findings based on my sample rocks that I have brought back home a little at a time.
