セイントジョージには興味深いものが盛りだくさん。パインバレー山脈もその一つです。- St George, UT has many interesting things and places, and Pine Valley Mountains is one of them.

この山脈は、おそらく世界一大きいとされるラコリスがある事で有名です。ラコリスとは、簡単に言えば、地表に出きれなかったマグマが地中横長に広がってできた巨大岩盤です。- It’s famous for being the largest laccolith in the world.  To explain laccolith in one sentence, it’s a large rock body that was created by magma that spread sideways because it couldn’t get to the surface. 

その多くは、モンゾニ岩となり地表に現れています。ライキン（地衣類）に覆われているモンゾニ岩。- Laccolith is now exposed on the surface as Monzonite rock.  Below is a Monzonite rock covered by lichen.

そして、これがサンプルとして持ち帰ってきたモンゾニ岩です。- And this is a sample rock I brought back home.

モンゾニ岩はラコリスによってできた石なので火成岩です。クラロン層の上に流れ込んだマグマは長い時間をかけてその近辺の石を巻き込んで固まっていきました。- Monzonite is an igneous rock.  Magma intruded into the Claron formation, melted the surrounding rocks, and hardened over a long, long time.

約2,200万年前のこと。想像できますか？この近辺一帯の地中も高温でグニャグニャで、地上でも火山噴火もあったりと、とにかく熱い場所だったんですね。- It happened about 22 milion years ago.  Can you imagine that this entire area was so hot underground, and so hot with volcanic eruptions above ground.

今では、一番高い山頂は3,000メートル以上もあり、夏でも涼しい場所となっています。- Now, 22 million years later, it’s one of the cool places around here even during the summer months because of the high altitude. The highest peak is over 10,000 feet.

モンゾニ岩は、私のサンプル石ガーデンの14番目に収まりました。 – The Monzonite rocks are now at spot number 14 in my sample rock garden.
