サンスベリアの植え替え Repotting Snake Plants

昨日は9月1日。新しい月を迎える前に、昨日サンスベリアの植え替えをしてあげました。　Yesterday was September 1st. Before welcoming the new month, I repotted my snake plant yesterday.

このサンスベリアは10年以上生活を共にしてきました。そんなに長い月日が流れていることを思うと、感慨深いです。　This snake plant has been part of my life for over ten years. Thinking about how much time has passed since then fills me with emotion.

植え替え前　Before repotting

室内の空気を濾過して解毒してくれるサンスベリア、自然の室内清浄機なんですね。だから、感謝の気持ちを込めて新しい鉢に植え替えてあげました。　Snake plants filter and detoxify indoor air—it is nature’s indoor air purifier. So, with my gratitude, I repotted it into new containers.

植え替え後、４つの鉢のうちの一つは玄関の横におきました。 After repotting, I placed one of the four pots next to the entrance.

実は、1年以上前からサンスベリアの「早く植え替えてくれ〜！窮屈すぎるよ〜！」という悲鳴を聞いていました。でも、鉢が重すぎて動かすことすらできなかったんです。 Actually, for over a year now, I’ve been hearing my Snake plant’s cries of “Please repot me soon! I’m way too cramped!” But the pot was just too heavy to even move.

鉢からはみ出していた。 It was sticking out of the pot.

でも、2ヶ月前、今年の独立記念日パーティーに来てくれた筋肉マンさん達に助けてもらって、ようやく株分けをすることができました。 But two months ago, with the help of the muscle-bound guys who came to this year’s Independence Day party, I was finally able to divide the plants.

元気がなさそうな葉はどんどん捨てて、元気そうなものだけを選び4つの鉢に植え替えてあげました。でも、この植え替えは失敗しています。 I discarded all the wilted leaves and selected only the healthy ones to replant into four pots. But this replanting was actually a failure.

どうやら水のやり過ぎが原因のようでした。 It seems overwatering was the cause.

そこで、ネット検索の結果、今回はまず水栽培にして、根の成長の観察をすることにしました。1ヶ月が経ち、サンスベリアの根も生えてきたので、鉢植えに再挑戦しました。　So, after searching online, I decided to start with hydroponics this time to observe root growth. After a month, the Snake plant roots had grown, so I tried potting them again.

昨日は9月1日。自己満足ですが、清々しい月初めとなりました。きっと、サンスベリアも無事に根付いてくれると信じます。 I am quite pleased with myself, but yesterday, September 1st, was a refreshing start to the month. I am confident the snake plants will take root just fine.

この葉からはまだ根が出てきていなかったので、しばらく様子を見ます。 Since no roots have emerged from this leaf yet, I’ll wait and see for a while.

バーティザン アーチ Bartizan Arch

標高 10,000 フィート（3,000m) 以上、コロラド高原の西端に位置するのがシーダーブレイクス国定公園です。石灰化されたクラレン層で覆われています。 Cedar Breaks National Monument is located at an elevation of over 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) on the western edge of the Colorado Plateau. It is covered by the calcified Claron Formation.

この公園の南端にあるバーティザン アーチを目指して歩き始めました。 We began walking toward the Bartizan Arch at the southern end of this park.

途中から雨が降り出したので引き返そうかと思いましたが、続行してよかったです。 It started raining partway through, so we thought about turning back, but I’m glad we kept going.

なぜなら、アーチの近くでこの青紫色の松ぼっくりに再会できたからです。ブリスタルコーンパインのコーン。 Because we were able to reunite with this blue-purple pinecone near the arch. The cone of the bristlecone pine tree.

10年前にカリフォルニアのホワイトマウンテン (14,252 ft, 4,344m) 、凍える寒さの中で初めて出会いました。その後、また会えることはないと思っていたので、ここで再開できたことは、とんでもなく意外で嬉しいご褒美でした。 Ten years ago, I first found it in the freezing cold on California’s White Mountain (14,252 ft, 4,344m). I never thought I’d see it again, so it was a completely unexpected delightful reward to see it here once more.

こんなにヒョロヒョロとして頼りない枝の先で頑張って生きていました。ブリスタルコーンという名前は硬い毛でできているボトルブラシのような形からきているようです。 It was struggling to survive on the tip of such a spindly, flimsy branch. The name “Bristlecone” seems to come from its bottlebrush-like shape made of stiff hairs.

青く硬いコーンは、上の写真のように2年かけて茶色のコーンに成長します。 The snall blue, hard cone grows into the larger brown cone over two years, as shown in the photo above.

石灰質の粗悪な地質、そして強風と寒さの中を生き抜いてきたブリスタルコーンの丘は、時間が止まったようにゆっくりと流れています。だからでしょうか。4000年以上も生き続けている木もあるということです。 The hills of bristlecone pines, having survived in poor limestone soil and enduring fierce winds and cold, seem to flow as if time has stopped. I wonder, is that why? Some trees have lived for over 4,000 years, like some in the White Mountains.

雨の中、一歩足を踏み込むたびに石灰の泥が登山靴にくっ付いて、久しぶりに泥まみれのハイクとなりました。車に乗る前、水たまりで靴を洗っているところ。　In the rain, with every step I took, chalky mud stuck to my hiking boots, making it a muddy hike for the first time in ages. Here I am washing my boots in a puddle before getting in the car.

招かれざる客人 Unwelcome Guest

突然、こられても困ります。昨日はバンちゃんはキャンプで留守、家には私一人だったので、最悪でした。 You cannot just show up out of the blue.　Yesterday was the worst day because Ban-chan was away camping and I was home alone.

招かれざる客人の名前はカリフォルニア キングスネークです。 The uninvited guest’s name was California Kingsnake.

昨日はハウスクリーニングの人たちが来ていたので、その時に侵入したのではないかと思っています。その後、夕食を作り、テレビを見ながら夕食を食べ、そろそろベッドルームに行こうと立ち上がり、そのタイミングで目の前の床を見たら、しっかりいたんです。　The housecleaners were here yesterday and I believe that was when it came in. I then cooked dinner, watched TV while eating dinner, and got up to go to my bedroom.
At that moment, I looked at the floor in front of me and saw that it was there.

誰たって、半端なく驚き絶叫しますよね？　15分ほど叫び続けました。そうしたら、少し落ち着きました。　And who wouldn’t be startled beyond belief and scream, right?　I kept screaming for about 15 minutes. Then I calmed down a little.

バンちゃんに電話したら、玄関のドアを開ければ出ていくと言われました。この時点で、あまりの恐怖に身動きすらできませんでした。でも、勇気を振り絞ってドアをあけたら、本当に出て行ってくれました。　I called Ban-chan, and he told me to open the front door so that it would leave. At this point, I was too terrified to even move. But I gathered up all my courage and opened the door, and it really did leave.

それにしても、ラッキーでした。もしもリビングルームで見つけていなかったら、そのまま寝ていたんですよね。このヘビをそのまま家の中に残して！！！ひぇ〜〜〜！　But still, I was lucky. If I hadn’t found it in the living room, I would have gone straight to sleep. With the snake still in the house! Aahhh!!!!

6年前、家の外で出会ったカリフォルニアキングスネーク。　Six years ago, I met a California Kingsnake outside our house.

追記：カリフォルニアキングスネークはガラガラヘビやネズミを食し、毒性でもないので良いヘビだと言われています。　Note: The California Kingsnake is said to be a good snake because it eats rattlesnakes and mice, and is not venomous.

追記2：日本では蛇は神の使いで、幸運をもたらす前兆だと言われています。　PS 2: It is said in Japan that snakes are messengers of the gods and omens that bring good luck.

さあ、6月だ！ Now, June!

昨日裏庭でデザートスプーンを発見してから、静かに興奮しています。　I am quietly excited after discovering the Desert Spoon in my backyard yesterday.

裏庭で朝食なんて、長いことしていなかったのに、デザートスプーンが見たいがため、外に出てみました。　I hadn’t had breakfast in the backyard in a long time, but I went outside to see the Desert Spoon.

そうしたら、一瞬でカメラを持って出なかったことを後悔しました。さっそくハチドリがすぐそばで咲いているユッカの花の蜜を吸い始めたからです。こちら、携帯のビデオ。　Then, in an instant, I regretted not having my camera with me. A hummingbird immediately started sucking the nectar from a yucca flower blooming nearby. This is my cell phone video of it.

もう6月なので、これからは30°C (86 °F) を下回る日はあまりありません。 Since it is already June, there will not be many days below 30°C (86 °F) from now on.

裏庭で孵化した鳥達もほとんど飛び立って行きました。 Most of the birds that hatched in the backyard have flown away.

この茂みの中に残っているのは、ハトだけだと推察しています。　I am guessing that the only thing left in these bushes are pigeons.

小鳥達はこの夏の間に十分体力をつけておかなければいけません。次の冬が乗り越えられるかがその後の鳥の生死を決定します。　Small birds need to build up their strength during this summer. The ability to survive the following winter will determine whether the birds live or die in the following years.

「僕たちだって同じだよ。」と、産まれたばかりのサバクゴファーガメ君が言いました。　”We’re the same way,” said the newborn Desert tortoise.

そうですね。すべての生まれたての野生動物は一生懸命です。 That’s right. Every newborn wild animal is hard at work.

生きる活力を感じます。同時に、命の尊さを教えてくれます。 I feel the vitality of life. At the same time, it teaches us the preciousness of life.

歩いて来たプレゼント My Present That Walked In

今年の私の誕生日はもうすぐですが、すでに嬉しくて仕方がない！！！なぜなら、6年間も願っていたプレゼントがすでに歩いてやって来きてくれたからです。　My birthday is coming up soon this year and I am already so happy! Because the present I have been wishing for for 6 years has already walked over to me.

はい、アメリカドクトカゲ君のご登場です。　Yes, Mr. Gila Monster, here you are.

つい先日、あと6年間待つから、ケ・セラ・セラでいこうと気持ちの整理をしたばかりでした。　It was only a few days ago that I had just decided to wait another six years, so I was ready to say, que sera, sera.

全長20インチ (50 cm) ぐらいはあったように思います。 I think it was about 20 inches (50 cm) long.

お昼寝をしているアメリカドクトカゲ。 The Gila Monster taking a nap.

ただ、ただ、うれしくて顔が自然に緩んでニンマリしています。 I am just so happy and my face is naturally relaxed and smiling.

ルーシー Lucy

バスルームの中から毎日見える景色。大好きです。 The view from inside the bathroom every day. I love it.

窓のすぐ外にデザートウィローの木の幹があります。ここに鳥箱を引っ越してきてから設置しました。長い間誰にも使われることなく、古いバードハウスがますます古くなり、放置されていました。 There is a Desert Willow tree trunk right outside the window. We installed a bird house here after we moved in. For a long time no one used it and the old bird house was getting older and older and neglected.

でも、今年の春は違います。ついに気に入ってくれた鳥が現れました。　But this spring is different. Finally, a bird that liked it showed up.

ルーシーアメリカムシクイです。 Lucy’s Warbler.

アメリカムシクイ科の中で最も小さい種です。私の人差し指の長さぐらいしかありません。 It is the smallest species of the American warbler family, and is only about the length of my index finger.

勿論、私たちは嬉しくて写真を撮りまくりました。そして、あることに気がつきました。このハイノドヒタキモドキがこの木の何処かにいつも止まっていました。そして、ルーシーが鳥箱から出てくる時に攻撃するシーンを目前に見てしまいました。　Of course we were happy and took a lot of pictures. Then we noticed something. This Ash-throated Flycatcher was always perched somewhere in this tree. And then we saw it attack Lucy as she was coming out of the bird house, right in front of us.

ルーシーは素早く飛び去っていき大丈夫でしたが、あまりのショッキングな光景に驚きました。野生の世界は本当に危険がいっぱいです。　Lucy quickly flew away and was fine, but it was such a shocking sight. The wild world really is full of dangers.

残念なことに、私たちのルーシーの観察はここまでです。なぜなら、毎日アメリカドクトカゲを探して出かけていたので、ルーシー家族が旅立った事に気づきませんでした。そこで、ルーシーの来訪を記念してショートビデオを作りました。ご覧ください。　Unfortunately, our observation of Lucy ends here. Because we were out every day looking for the Gila monster, we were unaware when Lucy’s family departed. So I made a short video to commemorate Lucy’s visit. Please take a look.

ルーシーの寿命は5年ぐらい。こんなに小さい体なのに毎年メキシコから産卵のために北上するそうです。来年も来てくれるかな。　Lucy’s lifespan is about five years. They say that even though she has such a small body, she travels north from Mexico every year to lay eggs. I wonder if she will come back next year.

近いのに、まだ遠い So Close, Yet So Far

結論から言うと、毎日の捜索の甲斐もなく、この日も再びアメリカドクトカゲに遭遇できませんでした。 As it turned out, despite our daily searches, we have not encountered the Gila monster again.

それでも、少し近づけたと思います。なぜなら、私たちと同じようにアメリカドクトカゲを一目見てみたいという人たちと情報交換をしているからです。 Still, I think we got a little bit closer. This is because we are exchanging information with people who, like us, would like to catch a glimpse of the Gila Monster.

「見つけたら叫んで教えてあげるよ」と言って去っていく人たちを見ながら、少し嬉しくなりました。名前も知らないのに、同じ目的を持つことで同志のような感覚が生まれてるんだなーと気づいたからです。 I was a little pleased as I watched them leave, saying, “I’ll holler and let you know when I find them.” It was because I realized that even though we didn’t know each other’s names, we felt like comrades in arms by having the same goal.

この日も諦めかけていた時、遠くの方で私たちに向かって手を振っている人たちに気がつきました。走って近づいてくと、アメリカドクトカゲという単語が聞こえてきました。 We were about to give up on this day’s search when we noticed people waving at us in the distance. As we ran closer, we heard the word “Gila Monster.”

重いカメラを抱えながらも全力疾走でたどり着くと、ドクトカゲはすでに穴の中に入っていく所でした。 When we arrived at the spot, me running as fast as I could with my heavy camera, the lizard was already on its way into the hole.

なんと言いますか、私たちのアメリカドクトカゲへの道は遠いです。こんなに近くで見られそうなのに遠い。 What can I say, our road to the Gila Monster is a long one even though it seems to be so close to us.

6年間も待ち続けた末のシッポとの遭遇なので、喜んでもいいんですけどね。あと6年ぐらい探し続けたら、「目と目を見つめ合うような素晴らしい出会いができる！」と思っておけばいいでしょうか。 I should be happy, though, because after six years of waiting, I’ve encountered the tail of Gila Monster, twice. So, if I continue looking for another six more years, I am sure I will have a “wonderful, eye-to-eye encounter!” Haha!

サバクゴファーガメも住処の穴倉に帰ってくつろいでいたので、私たちも引き上げることにしました。 We decided to pull out as well, as the Mojave Desert Tortoises were already relaxing back in the burrows where they live.

初めて見た鳥の写真 First Bird Photos I Ever Saw

今年のバードフェスでは、初めて見つけられた鳥がたくさんありました。すでにご紹介した5種、クロツキヒメハエトリ、キイロアメリカムシクイ、ブラックホーク、アオライチョウ、グレースアメリカムシクイの写真はラッキーにもかなりマシに撮れました。 At this year’s Bird Fest, I could find many birds that I had never seen before. I was lucky enough to get pretty good photos of the five species I have already mentioned: Black Phoebe, Yellow Warbler, Black Hawk, Dusky Grouse, and Grace’s Warbler.

他にも初めて見つけられた鳥が何種かいたのですが、みんな遠い所にいたので良いショットがありません。それでも一応、来年のために記録として載せておきます。　There were several other bird species that I was able to find for the first time, but they were all so far away that I don’t have good shots of them. Still, I’ll put them up as a record for next year.

来年はいい写真が撮れるようにこれから少しずつ準備しておきます。　Now I will prepare a little more so that I can take good pictures next year.

オスのベニタイランチョウ（右）は鮮やかな色なので見つけられますが、メス（左）は特徴がないので、今回初めて撮ることができました。 　The male Vermilion Flycatcher (right) is easy to spot because of the bright colors, but the female (left) is not distinctive, so this was the first time I was able to photograph her.

とはいえ、いい鳥の写真を撮るためには、どんな準備をすればいいのでしょうか。　But what kind of preparation is needed to take good bird pictures?

私ができそうな準備二つ。 There are two things I might prepare for.

  • 鳥の鳴き声を聞き分ける。（1種ずつ覚えれば、できないこともない。）　Identify the sounds of birds. (If you learn one species at a time, it’s not impossible.)
  • 鳥の習性を知り、いそうな場所の見当をつける。（学習あるのみ）　Learn the habits of birds and get an idea of where they are likely to be. （Learning is the only way to learn.)
左からチャガタルリツグミ、ムジルリツグミのオス、ムジルリツグミのメス。 ムジルリツグミのオスは遠くから見ても鮮やかな青色で美しい。　From left to right: a Western Bluebird, a male Mountain Bluebird, and a female Mountain Bluebird. The male Mountain Bluebird is beautiful even from a distance, with its bright blue color.

グレース Grace

グレースアメリカムシクイです。バードフェスの最中にザイオン国立公園の西で見つけました。この鳥も私にとっては、初顔です。　This is a Grace’s Warbler. We found it in the western part of Zion National Park during the Bird Fest. This bird is also a new bird for me.

グレースアメリカムシクイは、エリオット クーズという鳥類学者によって発見されました。新しく発見された鳥には大抵発見者の名前が付けられます。だからエリオットアメリカムシクイという名前になっていてもおかしくなかったんですね。でも、彼は妹のグレースの名前を使って欲しいと要求したので、彼の願いが叶い、グレースアメリカムシクイになったということです。 The Grace’s Warbler was discovered by an ornithologist named Elliot Coues. Newly discovered birds are usually named after their discoverer. So it could have been named the Elliot’s Warbler. But he requested to use his sister Grace’s name. So his wish was granted and it became the Grace’s Warbler.

なんていいお兄さんだったんでしょう。 What a great brother he was!

この顔を見ていると、エリオットアメリカムシクイと呼んでもいいような、ちょっと凛々しい雰囲気もします。　Looking at this face, it also looks a bit dignified, as if it could be called an Elliot’s Warbler.

おっと。前言撤回。そんなことを言ったら、世の中のグレースという名前をもち、しかもこの鳥が好きな多くの女性が悲しみそうですねからね。やはり、グレースアメリカムシクイがピタリ合っていそうです。　Oops. I take back what I just said. If I said that, many women in the world who have the name “Grace” and like this bird would be sad, right? I think Grace’s American Warbler is the perfect name for this bird.

とても優雅なアメリカムシクイです。　This is an elegant warbler.

アオライチョウ Dusky Grouse

アオライチョウのメスです。　This is a female Dusky grouse.

ザイオン国立公園の西側、標高2,890フィート (2.4km)にあるラバポイントというなの展望台近くで見つけました。 We found it on the west side of Zion National Park at an elevation of 2,890 feet (2.4 km) near an overlook called Lava Point.

この日の朝ブラックホークに出会って十分満足していた私は、その後、何も期待していませんでした。でも、この鳥との出会いに誕生日とクリスマスのプレゼントを一緒にもらってしまった気がしました。きっと、他のグループメンバー6人も同じように超ラッキーだと思ったに違いありません。　I was happy enough with my encounter with the Black Hawk that morning, so I had no expectations after that. But I felt like I had received a birthday and Christmas present together with this encounter with the bird. I am sure the other six group members must have felt super lucky as well.

この鳥に再び出会える確実はきっと限りなくゼロに近いと思いながら、アオライチョウが飛び去って行った後も、この出会いに深く感謝していました。 Even after the blue grouse flew away, I was deeply grateful for this encounter, knowing that the certainty of seeing this bird again was surely close to zero.

春は駆け足で通り過ぎていきます。 Spring is passing by at a runaway pace.

サバクゴファーガメも忙しく歩き回ってます。 Mojave desert tortoises are busy walking around.

毎年のことですが、野生動物たちのエネルギーに圧倒されています。私たちは目下、アメリカドクトカゲを探し求めて毎日歩き回っています。彼らは年に2回しか公の場に出てこない猛毒トカゲで、(一年の95％は穴倉で暮らすとされています。5月と9月に食料確保をするために穴から出てくると聞きました。）今がまさにその貴重な活動する時なんです。詳しくはこちらのサイトをご覧ください。https://a-z-animals.com/animals/gila-monster/10-incredible-gila-monster-facts/ Every spring we are overwhelmed by the energy of the wildlife. ゼブラテールリザードはよく挨拶してくれます。 Zebra-tailed lizard greets us often.

先日、その日も諦めて帰る道すがら、不思議な物体が不思議な動き方をして移動していました。それがまさにアメリカドクトカゲだと認識できた時には、低木の中に逃げていってしまいました。 The other day, on our way home after giving up the search that day, we saw a strange object moving in a strange manner. By the time I was able to recognize that it was indeed an Gila monster, it had fled into a bush.

かろうじて撮れた写真はこの尻尾だけでした。２０分じっと待ちましたがついに出てきてくれませんでした。 I barely managed to get a picture of it, just its tail. We waited patiently for 20 minutes, but it never came out.

年に2回しか巣から出てこないので脂肪をたっぷりと尻尾に蓄えている。 They come out of the nest only twice a year, so they have plenty of fat stored in their tails.

きっとまともな写真を撮れる時が来るはずです。だから、とりあえず、幻のように初めて目前に現れてくれたアメリカドクトカゲに感謝です。 There will surely come a time when I will be able to take decent pictures. So, for now, I would like to thank the Gila monster for appearing in front of me for the very first time, like a phantom.

 いつか、このサイドブロッチドリザードのようなポーズをしたアメリカドクトカゲを撮れるよう、しばらくは探索が続きます。 The search will continue for a while so that someday I can photograph an Gila monster in a pose like this Common Side-blotched Lizard.
