牧場の土曜マーケット Saturday Market at the Farm

私たちの街には史跡に指定されている牧場があります。 There is a farm designated as an historic park in our town.

昨日、私達はそこで新しくスタートした土曜のマーケット、サンライズマーケット、に参加しました。　We attended the newly started Saturday market, called the Sunrise Market, there yesterday.

熱気球も空に上がり、牧場の動物たちもいて、とても気持ちがいい日でした。 It was a beautiful day with hot air balloons in the sky and farm animals.

バンちゃんの足は、1月3日に手術してから順調に回復はしているものの、まだ100％ではないです。だから、保護ブーツを履いて設置と撤収も含めると7時間にも及ぶマーケットを乗り切りました。 Banchan’s leg is still not 100%, although he has been recovering well since his surgery on January 3. So he survived the 7-hour market, including setup and tear down, wearing a protective boot.

彼の今日の成果は大きな写真の特注が一枚です。新しい場所でのスタートとしてはまずまずでした。 His result today is one large photo special order. It was a good start in a new place.

私は何もすることがなかったので、牧場散策をしました。 I had nothing to do, so I took a walk around the ranch.

新鮮なイチゴを買ったり、ココナッツオイルを買ったり、お昼のサンドイッチやちょっとエキゾチックな食べ物を買ったりと、それなりに楽しかったです。でも、今日の1番の収穫はついに出会えたローカルの蜂蜜です。 It was fun in its own way, buying fresh strawberries, coconut oil, sandwiches for lunch, and a few exotic foods. But the best part of the day was the local honey I finally came across.

まさにこの町のこの牧場の近くで養蜂されているハチミツです。花粉症がひどいので、地元の花からとれているハチミツは最高に効くと言われています。もちろん、ハチミツの効能はそれだけではないので、どのハチミツでもいいでしょう。でも、花粉対策には断然地元産です。早速、今朝のコーヒーにセイロン産シナモンと共にこのハチミツを入れて、美味しかった〜！　This honey is harvested from bees raised near this farm in this town. I have severe hay fever, so honey from local flowers is said to work best for me. Of course, that is not the only benefit of honey, and any honey will do. But for pollen control, it is definitely locally produced honey that is the best. I immediately put this honey in my coffee this morning along with Ceylon cinnamon, and it was delicious~!

先々週、バンちゃんのお抱え運転手の私は、待ち時間にトレーナーの家の近所を歩き回っていました。鳥が気になったからです。 The week before last, as Banchan’s chauffeur, I was walking around his trainer’s neighborhood while waiting. I was curious about the birds.

不審者だと思われたのかもしれません。私が立ち止まっていた前の家から住人がでてきました。 They may have thought I was suspicious. A person came out of the house in front of which I was standing.

そこでアオサギに興味がある旨を話したら、それじゃあということで、庭の奥の方まで案内してくれました。　I told him that I was interested in the heron, and he offered to take me to the back of the garden.

そこからは、勿論、オオサギが近くで見えたので、大喜びした。でも、それ以上に私を興奮させたのは、農家の動物たちでした。 From there, of course, I was delighted to see the great blue heron up close. But what excited me even more were his farm animals.

その日は、カメラを持っていなかったので、翌日お邪魔して撮らせていただきました。 I did not have my camera with me that day, so I visited the next day and took these pictures.

この日は、なんと産みたての卵まで頂いてしまいました。新鮮卵、最高です。 I even got freshly laid eggs that day. Fresh eggs are the best.

どの鶏の卵だったんでしょうね。 I wonder which hen’s eggs they were.

こんな思いもかけない出会いがあるなら、お抱え運転手業もたまにはいいかもね。　With unexpected encounters like this, a chauffeur-driver business might be a good idea once in a while.

ボビーの訪問 Bobby’s Visit

土曜日は夜明け前に起きて、暗いうちから土曜のマーケットに行っています。この日もまさに出かけようとしていたら、裏庭にボビーを発見。なんという、タイミングの悪さ。 On Saturdays, we get up before dawn and go to the Saturday market in the dark. On this very day, just as we were about to head out, we spotted Bobby in the backyard. What a bad, bad timing.

ボブキャットのボビーは2年前、初めて訪れてくれた時には、まだ子供でした。 Bobby the Bobcat was just a cub when he first visited us two years ago.

どうやら、お食事中だったようです。 Apparently, he was having a meal.

久しぶりに来てくれてありがとう！ Thanks for coming here again after so long!

朝日を浴びて、美しい。立派に成長しましたね。 You are beautiful in the morning sun. You have grown splendidly.

後ろ髪を引かれる思いで、ボビーを残して家を出ました。 We reluctantly left home leaving Bobby behind.

池の中の主 Ruler In The Pond

シーダーブレイクス国定公園のアルパイン レイク トレイルは3-4kmの短いトレイルです。 The Alpine Lake Trail at Cedar Breaks National Monument is a short 2 mile long trail.

花が咲き乱れて美しい季節でした。それと同時に数億の虫が空中を飛び交かう、というか、虫だらけの中を、目も鼻も口もあまり開けないように我慢して歩いていきました。 It was a beautiful season with flowers in full bloom. At the same time, hundreds of millions of insects were flying through the air, or rather, I walked through the air full of insects, trying patiently not to open my eyes, nose, or mouth too much.

鳥たちは嬉しそう。食べ物が彼らの周りを飛んでいるからです。 The birds seem happy. Because food is flying around them.

虫地獄を我慢した甲斐がありました。視界がパッと開け、静かなアルパイン レイクがありました。 It was worth putting up with the bug hell. The view opened up and there was the Alpine lake.

倒れた木もそのままで、トレイルもあるようでないような、手入れが全くされていない自然そのままの池でした。その中に動いているものを発見しました。 The pond was pristine and unkempt, with fallen trees intact and no trails. We found something moving in the middle of the pond.

これは、なんと、サンショウウオです。初めて見ました。 This is, by golly, a salamander. I saw it for the first time.

前足には4本の指、後ろ脚にも4本の指がありました。種類によっては後ろ脚に5本の指があるものもあるそうです。 They had four fingers on their front legs and four fingers on their hind legs. Some species have five fingers on their hind legs.

小さいものから、大きいものは多分直径25cmぐらいあるものもいました。 Some were small and some were large, perhaps 12 inches in length including the tail.

このサンショウウオについての記述は公園のガイドやあらゆるウェブサイトを調べても載っていません。 There is no mention of this salamander in any of the park guides or any websites I have checked.

まだ公園のビジターセンターが工事中なのでウェブサイトもアップデートできていないんでしょうか。こんな貴重な生き物についての記述がないのは残念です。でも、記述がないから観光客に知られず、ひっそりと生きていけるのかもしれません。 I guess the park visitor center is still under construction so the website has not yet been updated. It is a pity that there is no description of such a precious creature. On the other hand, perhaps the lack of description allows them to live quietly and unnoticed by tourists.

水中の生物を水上から撮るのは、難しいですね。以下のビデオの質は良くないですが、雰囲気がわかると思います。 It is difficult to photograph or video underwater life from above the water. The quality of the following video is not great, but it gives you an idea of this amazing creature.

ナキウサギ Pika

ナキウサギは高原に住むウサギ科の動物です。ウサギ科なのに、耳が長くなく、丸い形をしています。標高3,350メートル以上、夏なのにまだ雪が残っている丘の岩場に住んでいました。 The Pika is a member of the rabbit family that lives in the highlands. Even though it is a member of the rabbit family, it does not have long ears, but they are round in shape. At an altitude of over 11,000 feet, they live on the rocky slopes of the hills where snow still remains even into summer.

この日の目的はナキウサギを撮ることでした。だからズームレンズが必須でしたが、歩く距離を考えて泣きながら断念し、軽い100mmマクロレンズだけを持っていきました。 The purpose of the day was to photograph the Pika. So a zoom lens was a must, but considering the distance I had to walk, I gave up in tears and brought only a lightweight 100mm macro lens.

ここがナキウサギの住む場所です。 This was where the Pika lives.

広い岩場を見渡していても、岩と同色をした20cm足らずのナキウサギを見つけるのは至難の業でした。バンちゃんが、「あそこに居るよ」と囁いてくれましたが、どこに居るのか分からずシャッターを押し続けました。下の写真には、ナキウサギが写っています。どこだかわかったら拍手を送ります。 Looking around the large rocky area, it was extremely difficult to find a Pika since they are less than 8 inches long and the same color as the rocks. Ban-chan whispered to me, “There he is,” but I couldn’t see him. So I kept pressing the shutter button, not knowing where he was. In the photo below, you can see a pika. I will applaud if you can find out where it is.

初めまして！私の人生で初めて見るナキウサギでした。 Nice to meet you! It was the first Pika in my life.

この画像を見て、800mmレンズを持ってこなかったことを後悔しました。 Seeing this image made me regret not bringing my 800mm lens.

またいつか、会えるでしょうか。 Will we meet again someday?

ま、このショットは結構いいので、これでいいことにします。草のお食事を前にして、満足そうなナキウサギです。 Well, this shot is pretty good, so I’ll leave it at that. This is a Pika looking satisfied with its meal of grass in front of it.

もう少しで食べ終わりそう。 It was almost done eating.

ところで、ナキウサギはどちらかと言うと、ハムスターに似ているのになぜウサギ科に属するのでしょうか。 By the way, why does the Pika belong to the rabbit family when it looks more like a hamster?

もしかしたら、その食性がウサギのようであるからかもしれません。植物を食べ、まず、緑色の柔らかい糞を出します。その後、その柔らかい糞を栄養を取るため再び食べ、丸い糞を出すそうです。ウサギも同じ事をするそうです。 Perhaps it is because its diet is rabbit-like. It eats plants and produces soft green feces. But then they eat the soft droppings again for nourishment and produce round droppings. Rabbits do the same thing.

冬が来た！ Winter Has Arrived!

ザイオン国立公園に雪が降るとの天気予報を聞き、初雪の写真を撮りに出かけました。 We went to Zion National Park to take pictures because the weather report said it was going to snow.

近くなるにつれて雪がドンドン降ってきました。 As the park got closer, the snow got heavier.

期待した通りでした。公園に着いたら雪の世界が広がっていました。 And just like we wanted, the park changed to a snow wonderland.

とりあえずザイオンロッジに向かいました。 We went to the Zion lodge first.

深い雪雲で大きな岩壁は見えないものの、時折の雲間から見える渓谷の景色に大満足です。 We enjoyed the grand views from the lodge very much even though we couldn’t see the peaks as the thick clouds covered them.

ロッジからバージンリバーを渡り、トレイルを歩きました。 We crossed the Virgin river from the lodge, and walked on a trail.

雪に覆われるとどうしてこんなに風景が美しくなるんでしょうね。 Why is that scenery becomes so beautiful once snow covers the land?

魔法の杖が一振りされたんですね、きっと。 I guess someone had waved a magic wand.

トレイルはツルツルで、アイゼンを持ってくるのを忘れてしまったことに後悔しました。While we walked the slippery trail, we regretted that we didn’t bring our crampons.

早々に引き上げ、車に戻ってきた時には私たちにも雪が積もっていました。 So we soon gave up walking and came back to our car. When we got to the parking lot, we realized that the snow was on us as well.

牡鹿の立派な角にも雪が積もっていました。 The snow was on the buck’s gorgeous antlers as well.

もう冬が来ていました。 Winter had come already.

今日！ TODAY!

いつからでしょう。氷点下になる日々が始まっていました。 Below freezing morning temperatures have started. When did the weather change?

ある日、外を見たらロードランナーのロジャーが冬を前にぷっくりしていました。 When I looked out into our backyard, I found Roger the roadrunner already puffed up before Winter.

すでに爬虫類の友達はみんな冬の住処へ引っ越して、フワフワと夢を見ながら眠っている事でしょう。 All reptile friends have moved into their winter homes. I bet they are comfortably in their cozy beds now.

ところが、なぜかタランチュラの Mr. T がまだ庭の奥の方にいるではないですか。 Only Mr. T, the tarantula was out in our backyard.

冬の家がどこだかわからなくて迷子になってるのかな？ I wonder if he couldn’t find his winter home.

毎日様子を伺っていましたが、昨日から Mr. T の姿がありません。きっと冬の住処に避難したんでしょう。 We watched him everyday for a couple weeks to see how he was doing. But since yesterday, we couldn’t find him. I think he finally found his winter home.

感謝祭も嵐のように過ぎ去っていきました。 Thanksgiving had come and gone like a storm.

そして、今日、私たちのダンスを披露する日となりました。 And finally today. It’s the day for us to perform our dance in front of people.

諸々の行事でほとんど練習できず、ダンスルーティンもようやく数日前に決まった有様です。 We were so busy for various events so that we really didn’t have time for dance practice. In fact, it was only a few days ago that our dance routine was finalized.

ウェストコースト スウィングを2.5分間、舞台の上で踊ります。 It’s a west-coast swing routine for 2.5 minutes on stage.

ここまできたら、胸を張って楽しく踊るのみ。 Well, at this point, we simply keep chin up, and enjoy dancing with music.

サソリとカエル The Scorpion and the Frog

多分、1ヶ月前にサソリのスコットがいなくなりました。これはいなくなる前に蜘蛛を食べているところです。 Probably about a month ago, Scott the scorpion disappeared. The picture below is him eating a spider before he went.

こちらはカエルのフランクです。彼は地上レベルの小さな池で暮らしていました。 This is Frank the frog. He lived in a small pond at ground level.

それが、少し前ごろから、地面レベルの池から 1m ぐらい上で日向ぼっこしているフランクを発見しました。 But then, a little before Scott disappeared, we found Frank at a terrace about three feet above the ground. He looked like he was enjoying the warm sun light.

その後、彼は大胆にもスコットが住んでいる頂上の大池までジャンプして、大海を満喫している様でした。手前にスッコット、その向こうの水の中にフランクがいます。 Soon after that, Frank jumped boldly to the top level, and was enjoying the larger pool even more.

涼しい顔をしているフランクです。 This is Frank with a cool face.

フランクがスコットに食べられちゃうんじゃないかと心配していましたが、どうやらスコットは冬眠のため、噴水から降りて行った様です。残ったフランクは俄然大きな池を行ったり来たり。スコットが暮らしていた所で夜を過ごし、ついに主となりました。 I was worrying about Frank being eaten by Scott, but luckly the time came for Scott to go find a place to hibernate for the winter. So then, the water feature became Frank’s playground entirely on his own. He spent time between rocks where Scott used to live at night.

その後、私たちは忙しくてフランクの観察ができないでいました。でも、ある日、フランクが私たちを観察しているような感じで家の中をうかがっていました。 Then, we forgot about him because we became busy. But one day, I noticed that Frank was sitting close to the edge of the water feature and looking inside the house.

そこで、何ですか？と尋ねると、 So, I asked him, “what’s up?”

どうやら、記念撮影をして欲しそう。 He didn’t say a word but I understood that he wanted me to take portrait pictures.

恐竜のデイノニクスと一緒にいるところや、おすまし顔を撮ってあげました。 I took several pictures like the one being with Deinonychus, and doing a big boy pose.

その後、私たちの留守中にフランクは噴水を降りてどこかに行ってしまいました。きっと、また来てね！ We don’t know when he left the water feature, but I haven’t seen him since the last portrait. Come again next year!

獲物

裏庭の奥の方、滅多に行くことのない場所に、ローズマリーの低木が生えています。その枝の中に大きくて綺麗なクモの巣ができていました。 A very large rosemary bush grows at the very back corner of our backyard. I rarely go there. A large spider web was shining beautifully in between rosemary branches.

コガネグモの親戚グモがその中央に住んでいます。どうやら、せっせと何かしているようです。あら、口のあたりから何かが出ている。 A Banded Garden Spider is the owner of the web. When I saw her, she was busy at work doing something. Something was sticking out from around her mouth.

もっと近寄ってみると、どうやクモの糸を獲物に絡ませているようです。 I tried going closer to her, and found that she was wrapping her thread around her prey.

お腹側。いや、もしかして、獲物を食べてるのかな？ This is a ventral view. It’s also possible that she was eating it.

翌日もう一度見てみると、もう獲物は無くなっていました。 I went there again the next day, but the thing around her mouth was gone then.

巣の近辺を観察してみると、巣の下の方に糸に絡められた何かを発見しました。 I searched for the thing she was working on the day before, and found a thing wrapped by spider web at the bottom of the web.

これから食べられる獲物が入っているのか、すでに食べられてしまった残骸なのか不明です。たった一本の細い糸で巣と結ばれていました。 I have no idea what’s in it. Either her prey is still in it or it’s simply a leftover. It was connected by a thin thread to the web.

自然界は本当に面白い。不思議な事、面白いことが満載です。 Nature is full of mysterious and interesting things that I never get tired of it.

長期滞在の客人 Long Term Guests

8月半ばから、サソリのスコットが噴水の上に滞在中です。気温が下がってきたのでもうさよならの時期かなと毎日観察してきました。 Since mid August, Scott the scorpion has been staying at our house fountain. Because the temperature is getting lower, everyday I’ve been thinking it’s time to say good-bye to them for the year.

でも、去る様子はなく、夜はこんなに勇ましい姿で噴水の上を活発に動いています。そして、ある日、2匹目のサソリがいることを発見しました。 But it seems it’s not the time yet. In fact, he is quite active at night like this. And one day recently, we found another scorpion on the fountain.

害虫駆除の人たちが、2mmぐらいの子供たちが生まれてくるかもしれないから要注意だと警告してくれました。 Our pest control people warned us that we may start seeing 2mm tiny babies crawling around.

日中はこんな感じ。 His daytime activity is like this.

石の下に潜り込もうとしています。 He goes under a rock.

こうして暗くなるまで動きません。どうりで25年も生きられるわけです。 And doesn’t move at all until dark. No wonder he can live 25 years.

夜になると再び活動し始めるという生活。 He comes out again at night. This is his night life.

スコットも友達も、こんな風にして越冬できるできるのでしょうか。冬眠するとしたらもっと暖かい場所、つまり、家の中を選ぶらしいです。「外にいる限り」何年もいてもらって構わないんですが、家の中まで入ってこられると「困った客人」になってしまいます。害虫駆除の人達が家をガードするためにスプレイしてくれましたが、どこまで効果があるのでしょうか。観察を続けなければ！ I have been wondering a lot if Scott and his friend can live like this throughout the winter. So this is my finding. If they hibernate, they choose warmer places like inside somebodies house!!! For me, that’s absolutely not acceptable. They can be our guests for as many years as they want as long as they are outside. If they want to come in, they will be “Go away now!” guests. The pest control people spray well to guard the inside of our house. Let’s see how well it works. I should continue to monitor them carefully.

10K: ラストラン　Last Run

「レース中にアメリカドクトカゲを見つけたらどうする？」と、バンちゃん。 “What do you do if you see a Gila Monster during the 10K race?” said Banchan.

即答できず、「今日走ってから考える。」と、私。 I really couldn’t reply immediately, “I will think about it while I am running today.” I said.

レースの日まであと9日となり、10kmレースのコースをもう一度走るためにスタート地点に向かう車の中での会話です。 It was a conversation from this morning when he drove me to the starting point for the 10K race. It’s 9 more days to the 10K race and it was my last run before the race.

アメリカドクトカゲはこの公園内で時折目撃されています。この地に引っ越してきてから3年経ちますが、私たちには未だに幻の動物、出会ってみたい動物ナンバーワンなんです。だから、彼の質問は、言い換えると「10Kレースとアメリカドクトカゲとどっちが大切？」という質問とも言えます。 It’s not common, but Gila monster is seen in this park. We moved to this area three years ago, but we haven’t seen one yet. So it became the number one animal we want to see. So, his question could be rephrased to “which is more important to me, Gila monster or the Race?”

レースの為、公園内の通行閉鎖のサインがすでに出ていました。The sign for the road closure during the race was up at the park already.

今日は一人だったので、コース状況にがよく見えました。トカゲやコットンテールが慌てふためいて目の前を横切っていくのに注意を払い、時折草むらを見てアメリカドクトカゲを探していました。 I could see the course condition well because I was alone during today’s run. I saw lizards, a cottontail frantically crossing the trail right in front of me, and I saw myself looking at the to the side of the trail occasionally, looking for a Gila monster.

結論、アメリカドクトカゲが現れたら、躊躇なく立ち止まって写真を撮る。 So, this is the conclusion. I will stop running and take pictures if I see a Gila monster during the race.

その為にには少なくとも携帯を持って走らないといけないし、30秒ぐらいのタイムロスになるけど、いいじゃん？両方大切なんだから。というか、そんなことがあったら、最高です。 I have to carry my cell phone for that. And I will lose about 30 seconds of time, but that’s ok. Both of them are important for me. In fact, if such thing happens, I will be very, very happy.

今日の結果は前回と比べて50秒遅いけど、十分OKです。 This is today’s result. It’s about 50 seconds slower than last time, but that’s all right. I am still happy with it.

2分割しない Not Half and Half

日本では9月23日、アメリカでは9月22日、今日が秋分の日です。 It’s Autumn Equinox today, September 22, in the US, and September 23 in Japan.

今日のスコット　Today’s Scot

昼と夜の長さが同じになる日とされています。 This is the day where the length of daytime and nighttime are the same.

でもね、日の出と日の入りの時刻を見ると、この町では7:22am と 7:31pm なんです。これ、騙されているような気がしませんか？ But it is not exactly true. Today’s sunrise was 7:22am, and the sunset will be 7:31pm in my town. The day is 9 minutes longer!!!

そこで調べてみると、納得する理由が見つかりました。 So I looked for an answer why it’s not half and half, and found it.

いくつかある理由の中で、一番わかりやすい理由は太陽の直径と関係があることです。 There are several reasons for it, but the easiest reason for me is related to the diameter of sun.

日の出は、太陽が地平線から見え始めた時を指しますが、太陽のほとんどはまだ登りきっていません。また、日の入りは、太陽が地平線に完全に隠れた時を指します。つまり、太陽の直径分のずれがあるんです。 We call “Sunrise” based on the time it first appears on the horizon although the majority of the sun itself is still not visible. On the other hand, we call “Sunset” based on the time it is completely hidden on the horizon. If we use the center of the sun for sunrise and sunset, then it would be equal. And that is why we have daytime longer by about “the diameter of the sun” time.

ところで、我が家を毎年訪れてくれる、サソリのスコット君は、まだ噴水の上で暮らしています。正式に秋になったことだし、もうそろそろさよならの時かなと毎日観察しています。 By the way, our house guest, Scott, the scorpion is still living on the fountain. It’s officially Fall now. So he could leave here any time now. Because I don’t want to miss him leaving, I am observing him everyday.

「サソリがいなくなることを寂しがってるの？」とバンちゃんに言われました。人は変わるものですね。 “Are you going to miss Scott the scorpion when he leaves?” said Banchan. It is funny how much I have changed since I’ve moved here.
