季節が変わる – Changing of the Season

私たちの MV Rock が煙っていた。- Our MV Rock was misty.

レッドロックが雲に隠れてる。こんな景色はこの地に引っ越して来てから初めてだ。- Red Rock mountain is covered by clouds.  It’s my first time to see such a sight since I’ve moved to this place.

昨夜から雨が降り続いている。庭に植えたかったカクタス達は来年の春までポットの中にいたほうがいいらしい。雨が止んだら零下の温度になるからだ。夜になったらガレージの中に移動できるようにワゴンに移動した。すでに植えてあるカクタスはバーラップ布で覆って寒さをしのぐことになるらしい。- It’s been raining since last night.  It seems that my cactus plants need to stay in pots until next spring.  It is because the temperature will drop down to freezing temperature at night.  I put them in a wagon so that I can pull them inside the garage at night.  For those cactus already in the ground will be covered by burlap cloth.

ビーバーダム山脈もほどんどが雲に隠れてしまった。雨は明日まで降り続くらしい。 Beaver Dam mountains are also covered by clouds. The rain will last till tomorrow according to the weather report.  

そんな雨の中でも、いつもの裏庭警備隊長のミスターＱはスクッと立っている。雨の中でも、寒くても、塀の上からみんなの安全を見守っている。- Even on such rainy days, our friend Mr. Q, the chief of backyard security, is proudly standing there.  Rain or shine, cold or hot, he watches over everyone’s safety from the top of the fence.

アメリカツリスガラ – Verdin

10月半ばごろのショットです。- These shots are taken around mid-October.

アメリカツリスガラは、北米大陸の南の方にのみ生息する最も小さい鳥の仲間です。体長約10ｃｍ、黄色い頭に赤い肩が特徴です。小さくてじっとしていない鳥、私にとって撮影するのに難しい鳥の部類です。将来は黄色か赤い花、もしくはカクタスの中にいるところをバシリと撮りたいです。  – Verdin lives only in the southern part of North America.  The body length is only about 4 inches, one of the smallest birds in North America.  The yellow head and red shoulder patches are its characteristics.  In my opinion, it is one of the most difficult and challenging birds to take pictures of. It is in my Want To-Do list to take pictures of Verdin in a scene with yellow or red flowers, or cactus.

渡り鳥ではないので、冬用の巣を小さいけれど夏の巣よりがっしりと作るそうです。もう見かけないのですが、もう一度家の周りを観察して見ましょう。 – It’s not a migratory bird, so it builds a roosting nest for winter.  It’s smaller, thicker and more robust compared to the summer nest.  I have not located the nest so far. I should look around the house for their nest one more time.

そんなに隠れてもシッポが出てるよ。お顔見せて！ – I understand that you think you are hiding, but your tail is sticking out.  Can I see your face?

あ、出てきた。私たち、会ったことあるよね？  – Thank you for showing your face.  Have we met before?

やっぱり、そうだ。あなた、ここで生まれたミソサザイのレンちゃんでしょ？ – Yes, it is you, isn’t it?  Aren’t you the Bewick’s wren who was born here?

元気してた？もう寒くなったけど、大丈夫？ – How have you been?  Are you all right?  It’s getting cold these days.

また来てね。他の兄弟達にもよろしくね！ – Come again.  Say hi to your siblings!

続きがあります。上の写真は8月末のものです。 – The story doesn’t end yet.  The pictures above are from the end of August.

たぶん同じミソサザイが10月末にもう一度来てくれました。そのときの写真は以下です。 – The same wren, I guess, visited our backyard again at the end of October.  Here are images from then.

ところで、ラップトップと写真エディタの互換性がなくなってしまい、新しい写真の編集ができなくなってしまいました。新しいラップトップか、新しい編集ツール、どっちにしようか考えています。 – By the way, I have encountered a laptop and photo editor compatibility issue recently.  It means that I can’t edit new pictures!!!  My laptop is old, but it’s still working fine.  I’ve been thinking whether I should get a new laptop, or a new editor.

レンちゃんどう思う？ – Wren, do you have any suggestions for me?

ビッグホーンシープ – Bighorn Sheep

長いトンネルを抜けると、メサの世界が広がっていた。（本当の名前がわからないので勝手につけた名前ですけど）- After a long tunnel, the Mesa world appeared before our eyes. (I am calling it as “Mesa” but don’t know the real location name.)

そこで出会った。- And then, we met her.

モグモグ、何か用？ – Munch munch, what’s up?

つぶらな瞳で見つめられると、「失礼しました」と言いたくなってしまう。 – I have to say “Sorry for disturbing you!” when she looks at me with such big cute eyes.

ザイオン国立公園内、西口から入り東口に抜けるためにはトンネルを通過する。通過した直後ぐらいでビッグホーンシープに遭遇した。たぶんメスです。同じ場所、これで3回目。お気に入りの場所なんでしょうか。 – From the west entrance of Zion National Park, you go through a long tunnel in order to get to the east entrance.  I met Bighorn Sheep on three separate visits right after the tunnel.  It must be the place they like.  This particular sheep is female by looking at the horns.

メサの世界は穏やかに美しい。荒い流れでザイオン渓谷を作り上げたバージンリバーが流れていないせいだろう。 – The world of Mesa is gentle and beautiful.  I wonder if it’s because the Virgin river does not run through this part of the park.

成長したコンドル – Condor Has Grown Up

カリフォルニアから友人が訪ねてきてくれたので、ザイオン国立公園に行ってきました。 – We went to Zion National Park again because our friends visited us from California.

勿論、1K (コンドルの名前) がハイライトでした。(コンドルの赤ちゃんのブログ参照）遠くから見るだけなのでわからないはずなのに、仕草でしょうか。成長したなと感じました。前回見たときの岩には停まっていないし、もう大きな子供という感じ。 – Of course, we went to see 1K the Condor.  (see my blog about Condor baby) as a highlight.   We can see it only from far away, so we can’t see great detail, but we still could recognize that it has grown up to be a juvenile by the way it acts.  It (we still don’t know the sex yet) wasn’t perched on the rock where we saw it last time anymore.

こんな風に飛べたりするし。- It can fly like this already.

コンドルは食べ物を求めて1日に200km以上も飛んで行けるそうです。青年になって自分で餌を探すようになったら、もう、ここでは見られなくなるのかと思うと寂しいです。- A Condor can fly more than 100 miles a day in search of carrion.  When it becomes a young adult and is able to search for food by itself, we most likely won’t see it here anymore.  I’ll miss you, 1K.

1K、もう一度会えるかな？  – Can I see you again…?

ところで、何か言っていますが遠すぎて聞こえません。 – By the way, it is saying something, but can’t hear it as we are so far away.

そうか、自己主張の強い時期になってきたんですね。- I see.  It has reached the age where self-assertiveness appears.

フードゥーが起きる時 – When Hoodoos wake up

早朝のブライスキャニオン国立公園。さあ、太陽が見えてきた。 – Early morning at Bryce Canyon National Park.  Sun is coming up now.

そして、フードゥー達も起きてきた。- And Hoodoos are getting ready to wake up.

わー、真っ赤に燃えてるみたい。 – Wow, it’s like they are on fire.

おや？エッサホイサ誰かが掛け声と共に登ってくる。- Oh? Heave-ho hop hop, someone is coming up from the hoodoo canyon.  

あ、チップモンク君か。もう寒くなっちゃったけど、早朝は気持ちがいいね。- Ahh, it’s you, Chipmunk. It’s so cold, but doesn’t it feel good in the early morning?

写真家達も寒い中、夢中になってる。アシスタント(友人)は寒そうだな〜。- Photographers are also enjoying the morning.   But I am sorry for you, photographer’s assistant (our friend).  You look cold.

The Fab Four コンサート

昨夜、The Fab Four ファブフォーのコンサートに行って来ました。きゃ〜！ – I went to The Fab Four‘s concert last night.  Yeah!

グループの名前の通り、（Fab はFabricate の略で”模倣”)ビートルズの模倣4人組、ビートルズを記念、賞賛しての4人組というところでしょうか。トリビュートバンドです。 – They are as the name represents, a tribute band of The Beatles.

私は知りませんでしたが、彼らはすでにかなり有名で、テレビ出演も海外公演もバンバンしています。 – I didn’t know this, but they are already quite famous.  They have appeared on TV and performed all over the world.

そんなバンドのコンサートに突然招待されて、行ってきたというわけです。コンサート最後に撮ったグループ写真。私も完璧にど真ん中に写っています。- I was luckily invited to go to a live concert of this rock band.  The picture below is a group shot at the end of the concert.  I am there in the center of the crowd.

ご覧の通り、観客の平均年齢は高いです。ビートルズの活動は1960年代ですよね。その頃にファンだった人たちが圧倒的に多いわけです。でも、みなさんノリノリで久しぶりに楽しいひと時を過ごさせていただきました。コンサートの醍醐味は、観客と共に作られるダイナミクスにあるんですよね。- As you can see, the average age of the audience is quite high.  It’s because it was in 1960’s when the Beatles were active, and a majority of the audience last night were fans from that era. But still they were groovy and singing along.  I think the best part of the concert is the dynamics that is created by the performers and audience together.  This was present for sure last night.

コンサート会場は Tuacahn Center of Arts。ここには野外コンサート会場があり、レッドキャニオンをバックに会場自体がとても魅力的な所です。我が家からは車で10分の所。バンちゃんがいなかったので、友人ご夫妻がピックアップしてくれて、夜の道を運転することもありませんでした。まさにラッキーな夜でした。 – The concert was held at the Tuacahn Center of Arts.  It’s such a magestic location itself having red cliffs around the amphitheatre.  On top of that, it’s only 10 minutes away from our house.  My friend picked me up at my house because Banchan was out of town, so I didn’t need to drive in the dark.  I was indeed lucky to have such a night last night.

コンドルの赤ちゃん – Condor Baby

カリフォルニア コンドルの赤ちゃんが5月に生まれました。（英語版ですが、そのニュース）– California Condor’s baby hatched in May this year.

そんな大ニュースを知らずに訪れたザイオン国立公園だったので、準備不足でした。でも、十分感動して帰ってきました。- We visited Zion National Park without knowing such big news.  Although we didn’t prepare well for the condor viewing, I must say we were so lucky to see them for the first time, and we enjoyed it fully.

昨日書きましたが、ザイオン公園内はバス移動です。最初は風景を撮るために24 – 70 mmのレンズを持ってバスに乗りました。でも、コンドルを見てしまったら、どう考えてもレンズ交換せずに入られません。そこで、1時間半かけて車に戻り、再びコンドルの場所、エンジェルスランディングのまで戻りました。ビッグベンドの停留所がビューポイントになります。(下の地図参照）そこから約 0.5 KM ぐらいの場所に赤ちゃんがいます。- As I wrote about it yesterday, you need to use a shuttle bus to go places inside the park.  I hopped on the shuttle carrying only 24-70-mm lens originally.  But we needed to go back to our car, spending 1.5 hours round trip, using other shuttles to get the 400mm lens once we saw the condor baby.  (See the map below.)  The baby is standing on a rock against the wall below Angel’s Landing trail.  From Big Bend viewpoint to the baby is about 1500 feet.

これがビューポイントからの眺め。巣は高い所に作られたんですが、あまりにも早く巣立ちしすぎて、巣に戻れなくなってしまい、今の場所、巣から多分 0.25km ぐらい下の岩の上に住むようになったとレンジャーが話してくれました。- This is a view from the viewpoint.  The nest was made at much higher place, but the chick couldn’t get back to the nest after it fledged.  A ranger told us that it was too soon for the baby to take off.  So, baby is standing about 500 feet below on a rock since then.

赤ちゃんの名前は 1Ｋ。なぜなら、 California Condor Recovery Program が1992年にスタートしてから 1000番目の赤ちゃんだからです。まだお母さんとお父さんに教えてもらわなければいけないことがたくさんあるそうです。飛び方も、餌の探し方も、巣の作り方も、みんな大切なことです。- Baby’s name is “1K”.  It’s because it’s the 1000th baby successfully hatched since California Condor Recovery Program started in 1992.  The chick still needs to learn so many things like how to fly, find food, make a nest, etc.

向こう、数ヶ月から一年ぐらいは確実に餌を運んで来てもらうので、この場所に行けばかなり高い確率でコンドルの赤ちゃんが見られます。- The parents will bring food back to 1K for the next few months or even up to one year.  Therefore, the chance to see the chick is very high in the next few month.

私たちは日が暮れて太陽の光が隠れるまで観察していました。- We stayed there observing the baby until the sun moved behind the cliff.

こんな所に一人、これからも寒い冬を過ごすのかなぁと思うと、とても心配になります。- The baby will be alone in such a place throughout upcoming winter.  I really hope he can survive all right.

ちょうどその時 Raven というカラスの大きいのが飛んで来ました。それを見たお母さんはカラスを追い出しにいきました。遠くから見ていても迫力のあるドラマでした。また、サイズの差がこんなにあるのねと、改めてコンドルの大きさを確認しました。- Then, suddenly a raven flew over.  Condor Mom immediately started chasing it at full speed.  It was like a National Geographic nature drama in front of us.  As you can see it on the picture, Condor is so big.

ちなみに、全てのコンドルの羽には番号タグがつけられていて、モニターできるようになっているとのことです。このお母さんの羽には”9”の数字が見えます。409番目のコンドルなんですね。- By the way, all condors have numbering tags.  The conservation program can monitor each bird in this way.  We can see number “9” on her wing.  It means she is 409th condor.

1億5000万年間に堆積した地層をバックグラウンドに、この追跡ドラマはあまりにも雄大すぎる！- What a sight, it is too magnificent!  We totally enjoyed the drama in front of 150 million years of strata on the cliff face. 

そして、面白いことにコンドルがこんなに近くにいるのに気がつかない人もいる。左、カメラを持った人間。右、人間を見つめるコンドル。- On the other hand, it’s funny that some people don’t know how close a condor is to them.  On the left, a human with a camera on Angel’s Landing trail.  On the right, a condor looking at the human.

このエンジェルスランディングの絶壁にはクライマーもいます。赤ちゃんの右の方の壁を登っていたクライマーたち。- The wall of Angel’s landing is one of the attractions at Zion for climbers.

この方は、どうやら女性のようですよ。まだ先が長いですが、頂上までたどり着けたでしょうか。- It looks like this is a woman climber.  I hope she made it to the top. It looks like it is still a long way to go..

コンドルの赤ちゃんは身長1.2m、翼を広げると 3m ぐらいだそうです。強く逞ましく成長していってね！- The baby’s height is about 4 feet and the wingspan is 9 feet.  Please be stronger and live long!

1000mmのレンズ、欲しいな!!!  – I want a 1000mm lens!!!

秋のザイオン国立公園 – Zion NP in Fall

先週の木曜日に秋のザイオン国立公園に行って来ました。 – We went to see the Fall colors at  Zion National Park last Thursday.

公園内はバス移動しか許されていないので少々不便ですが、忘れ物などをするととても不便です。渓谷内の端から端まで40分、確か10ぐらいのバス停を通過します。 – You must ride a bus to move from one end to the other end of the valley which takes about 40 minutes.  So, it’s quite inconvenient especially if you forget to bring things with you from your car.  

今回のザイオンは 100 – 400 ｍｍのズームを持ってバスに乗り込みました。だから、ほとんどのショットが景色というより景色の切り取りショットになりました。途中、ついに我慢できなくて、5分だけバンちゃんに借りた 16 -35 mm レンズでワイドビューを数枚撮りました。- I brought the 100 – 400 mm lens only on the shuttle bus.  So all of my shots were super zoomed landscape images.  At one point, I couldn’t take it any longer not being able to capture gorgeous views. So I borrowed Banchan’s 16 – 35 mm lens for 5 minutes and took a few nice shots with it. 

ワイドレンズでの景色の切り取りは、難しいです。でも面白い発見があったと満足しています。- It was challenging with super zoom lens for the landsapes, but I am happy with the results because I discovered something new.

なぜ、400ｍｍを持って行ったのか。そのことについては、明日、書きます。- You may ask me why I brought only the 100 – 400mm lens to take landscape pictures.  I will write about the reason tomorrow!

ファーマーズマーケット2 – Farmer’s Market 2

肉まんが食べたくて、先週の土曜日にもう一度行って来た。- We went to the Saint George Farmer’s Market again because we wanted to eat the Chinese steamed buns again.

ポークとカレー味。両方とも好きだ。- I like both Pork and Curry flavors equally.

「その場でアツアツを食べるのがいいんだから、そんなに買っても食べられないでしょ？」とバンちゃんに言われても、たくさん買った。もちろん、その場の新鮮さには劣るけど、冷凍にしておけば、きっと美味しい。- “When you talk about Chinese buns, it’s best to eat hot right there, so buy only the amount you can eat right now.” said Banchan.  But I bought a lot.  Of course, it’s best to eat right there when they are fresh, but it’s still good if I freeze them asap.

ところで、先々週買ったカボチャ、調理して見ました。- By the way, I cooked the Kabocha, Japanese squash that I bought two weeks ago at the Farmer’s market.

日本人ですから、当然カボチャの煮物。自然な味を活かしたくて甘さ控えめにしました。美味しいと思ったけど、バンちゃんは食べようともしてくれませんでした。ガックリ・・- I know how to cook Kabocha only this way,  Japanese Nimono (simmered dish).  I used less sugar because wanted to have its own sweetness out from Kabocha.  I thought it was very good, but Banchan didn’t even try it.  Sad…

10月ももう終わりが近い。ということは、ハロウィーンだ〜！ – October is nearly over.  Do you know what it means?  Halloween!!!

ダンススタジオと、このEntrada コミュニティーでそれぞれパーティーがあるので行って来ます。どんな発見があるか、楽しみ！ – We will attend two parties. The first with our dance studio and the second with the Entrada community.  It’s our first time attending both of them.  It means we will discover something new!

稜線の向こう　- The other side of the ridge

一人でMV Rock の丘に登って見た。 – I hiked to MV Rock alone.

元気がありすぎて走ったりしたせいか30分ほどでベンチに到着。赤線が今日歩いた道。 – I might have had too much energy today.  I ran for part of the hike and got to the bench in a half hour.  The red highlighted line was today’s trail.

今日の目的はこれ。ベンチのある所に立っている自分を家から写真を撮ってもらう事。- The purpose of the hike was to have my picture taken at the bench from home.その後Scout Cave まで行って見た。 – I continued along the ridge to Scout Cave after that.

気持ちがいい。Scout Cave  へ向かう下り坂の前で。 – It felt so good!  This is another shot taken from home right before going down to Scout Cave.

私たちの住む家がある側は・・・東京と比べはいけません。でも、家や道路が見えます。 – This is the view from the ridge looking out towards our house.  You can’t compare with Tokyo, but houses and roads are there.

MV Rock のある稜線の向こう側は・・・自然のままのオープンスペース。 – The other side of the ridge is all open space, untouched nature.

自然がこんなに近い。この地に移り住んでよかった！感謝です。- I realized that nature is right there, so close to our house.  I am glad we moved to this beautiful location.

旅先の出会い – Encounter while Traveling

一人旅はあまり好きではないけれど、意外な発見や出会いはそんな時にある。 – I don’t like traveling alone, but I often find unexpected things and meet interesting people when I do.

ベッド＆ブレックファーストに一人で泊まったのは初めて。でも、暖かいおもてなしと宿泊のお客様達との和やかな会話のひととき。予想を超えて心に残る旅となりました。- It was my first time staying at a Bed & Breakfast alone.  The hospitality of the staff at the B&B was beyond my expectation, and sharing stories with guests was quite comforting. Despite my low expectation, the trip by myself to Denver became one of my favorite trips to retain in my memory.
