Hike 7: Temple Quarry Trail

5.96km、88m の登り。簡単な半日ハイキングコースでした。私たちは、横道に逸れて別ルートも歩いたので、距離は少し長めです。 It is a half day hiking trail, 3.7 miles and 289 feet elevation gain. We went off on a side trail at the end, so the distance is little longer than the trail itself.

かつて使われていた飛行場を左に見ながら歩くコースです。今はレストランや学校などができてきます。この10年間、この街がいかに変わって来たのかを話しながら歩きました。The old St. George airport was on the left side of the trail. It’s now used for variety of purposes. We talked about the town and how it has changed in the past 10 years while walking.

このトレイルは石碑ができるほど由緒ある道です。写真にあるように、1871年から3年間、溶岩を切り出すために使われました。The trail has an historical background, and a monument plate was attached to a rock. According to the description, it was used to carry lava rocks from 1871 to 1874.

セイントジョージの街の中心にあるセイントジョージ寺院はモルモン教の開拓者が建立しました。その際、地盤として溶岩を使う必要がありました。The Mormon pioneers needed lava rocks for the foundation of the Saint George Temple standing in the center of town.

溶岩が必要だった理由は、この地域の土壌はアルカリ成分を多く含んでいるので、その浸透を防ぐためだと、石碑には書かれてありました。 According to the monument description, they needed to use the lava rock because the soil at the temple site is an alkali soil, and lava rock was impervious to alkali soil.

この道を切り開くためにダイナマイトが使われました。道脇には、ダイナマイトが差し込まれたであろう穴が残る石塊がまだ残っていました。The pioneers used dynamite charges to make the trail. We found rocks still containing holes for the dynamite charges on the side of the trail.

大きな機械がなかったころ、半端じゃない困難な作業だったに違いありません。Can you imagine how hard it was to carry such huge rocks down without any machinery?

でも、「不可能に立ち向かう」、それが人間の歴史でしたよね。だから宇宙にも行ける様になったんだ。思考が飛躍しました。でも、すごくない、私たち？人間万歳だ！ But our history was always like that, wasn’t it? We kept challenging ourselves against impossibles, didn’t we? That’s why we could go to space. My thought leaped high from this, but, aren’t we great or what? Yes, Banzai human!

レモンタルト Lemon Tart

バンちゃんは美味しいと言って食べてくれましたが、私の採点はもう少し厳しい。Although Banchan said it was very good, my score for this dessert is lower than his.

オーブンの温度も関係してレシピの3倍以上の時間をかけてもタルトが固まらなかったし、レモン汁が少し多すぎたかも。 I spent three times longer for the baking time than the recipe called for, but it still didn’t come out looking right. The oven temperature didn’t go high enough, or I might have added too much lemon juice.

簡単かと思ったレモンタルトは意外に難しかったです。 I thought it was easy enough, but the Lemon Tart was much more difficult than I expected.

「お父さん、昨夜はお疲れ様でした。」”You worked hard last night by the lake.”

「いやいや、いつもの事だから平気だよ。子供が2羽もいるからね。」”Oh, no, that’s nothing. I have two kids. So, I have to get fish for them all the time.”

「こちらの2羽ですね。逞しそう。」”I see these are your children. They look quite healthy and tough.”

「まだ心配で目がはなせませんよ。」”I still can’t leave them alone.”

「下の子はまだ飛ぶのが下手で、お兄ちゃんにいつも揶揄われてますよ。」”Especially the younger one needs more attention. He is not so good at flying. So his brother always teases him.”

「何してるの？」と、お兄ちゃん。”What are you doing?” said the older brother.

「これ、ラクーンの残り。どうしよう？」と、弟。”Um, what should I do with the leftovers of this Raccoon?” said the younger brother.

「もう食べ終わったんなら、こうやって飛ぶ練習した方がいいよ。」”If you are done with it, you should practice flying more like this.”

「飛べるんだけど、木の上に止まるのがちょっと怖いよー」”I know. I can fly, but I am a bit afraid of landing on a tree.”

「私たちは見守るだけで、あまり口出ししない様にしてます。」と、お父さん。”We, as parents, simply observe them, and try not to interfere with their communications,” said father.

「なるほど。ところでお父さん、太陽を背に受けて飛んでる姿、格好よかったですよ！」”I see. By the way, you looked so cool flying with the light shining on your back.” 　

白頭鷲の家族 Bald Eagle Family

ある白頭鷲家のお話、その1です。 This is a story of one Bald Eagle family.

「早く帰って来なさい〜！もう、日が暮れかけているのよ〜！」と、お母さん。 “Hurry! Come back home now. It’s almost sunset.” said mother.

「まだ獲物探ししてたいんだけどなー。」と、子供。”Aww~, I want to keep hunting food a little longer…” mumbled her child.

「聞こえてるでしょ？早く帰ってらっしゃ〜い！」”I know you can hear me. Hurry, come back home!”

「母さん、私が呼んでこようか？」と、お父さん。”I could go and bring him back home, my dear.” proposed father.

「そうね、お願いします。」「よっしゃ！」”Thank you, please do.” “Got it!”

「でも、やっぱり私が行きます。お父さんは魚を釣って来てください。」”Oh, I will take him back home. Would you go and get a fish for us?”

その後日が沈んだ後も、お父さんが一人、湖畔の氷の上で獲物が来るのをじっと待っていました。Later on that day, the father was sitting by an icy lake even after sunset. He was waiting patiently for a fish to catch.

零下11度の夜はこうしてふけていくのでした。寒い！ The night went on like this down to 11 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. Soo cold!!!

5K: 40分を切った！ Breaking 40 minutes!

昨日、マラソン優勝歴が何回もある方と一緒に走る機会がありました。しかも屋外。彼女のアドバイスを聞き、美しい景色を眺めながら風を切るのは気持ちがいい。もう、春の風の匂いがする。その結果、なんと40分の壁を切った！ I was lucky yesterday because I could run with a person who has numerous winning records in races. It was an outdoor run. While listening to her advice and gazing at beautiful scenery, I felt so good with the wind going through my hair. It was already a nice spring wind. And believe it or not, the result was shocking. I broke the 40 minute wall!!!

補足です。上のスクリーンショットは 4.84km になってるよ！？とご指摘されるかもしれませんね。はい、以下、説明です。You may be wondering why I say I broke 40 minutes for 5K since the screen shot above shows only 4.84 km. Good question. I will explain below.

こちらは違う日のトレッドミルの結果です。距離は5.32kmです。Here is a previous treadmill result for a different run showing 5.32 km.

こちらの記録は、同じランですが、アップルウォッチの記録です。距離はいつも 0.2 – 0.3 km 短めに記録されるのは、歩幅のキャリブレーションをしてないからだと思います。The data below is from my Apple watch on the same run. I know that Apple watch always records 0.2 – 0.3 km less than the treadmill because I haven’t done the calibration.

私の時計、キャリブレーションしなくちゃ。I better calibrate my Apple watch real soon.

コンドルのタグ Condor Tags

マウントカーメルジャンクションは大きな鳥の好きな場所らしい。It seems that Mt Carmel Junction is a favorite place for big birds.

白頭鷲やイヌワシを目撃できただけで既に大満足でしたが、それに加えて更に違う鳥を発見した時は、鼓動がドキドキでした。三脚なしで重い望遠を空に向けるのは難しい。それでもキャノンのオートフォーカスが捕らえられた数枚です。 My heart was pounding when I found other large birds besides Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles because I was already so happy with just those eagles. It’s so hard for me to hold my heavy long lens towards the sky and focus on tiny things like grains of sand. But thanks to Canon`s auto-focus system, I could capture a few of them.

ズームインしてみると、カリフォルニアコンドルでした。 The other big birds were California Condors.

飛翔している時のコンドルの特徴の一つは、巨大な翼に比べ、頭が極端に小さいことです。ある程度の距離までくると、翼にタグが付いているのが見えるのも、特徴といえない事もありません。One of the condor’s characteristics when they are flying is that their head is so tiny compared to their wings. Also, you may be able to see tags on their wings when they come close enough. If you are not sure what kind of bird it is and find tags on their wings, that’s probably a condor. From this point of view, I could say that tags are also one of their identifying characteristics.

コンドルは絶滅危惧種なので、殆ど全てにタグが付けられ、成長過程をモニターされています。(どうやってタグが付けられるのかは、別の機会に書きます。) Condors are an endangered species. So all condors are tagged and monitored for their protection. (I will write about how biologists attach tags to them later in a separate entry.)

以下、コンドルのタグ情報です。3羽ともポートランドとアイダホと、遠いところで生まれていますが、1日に300km以上（東京から新潟ぐらいの距離）も飛べることを考えると不思議ではありません。 The chart below shows the condor/tag info. These condors were hatched in Portland and Idaho. Although they are far away for us, it is not so far for them considering that they can fly up to 200 miles a day.

どうやって見分けますか？ How do you identify which is which?

白頭鷲の大人は誰でもわかりますよね。I assume you can tell easily that this bird is a Bald Eagle.

こちらは犬鷲の大人。違いははっきりしてますね。This is a Golden Eagle. They look very different.

ただ、巣立ってから完全に成長するまでの5年間、この鳥たちは姿を変えていきます。クチバシと羽の色が変わっていくので、遠い上空を飛んでいる鳥を見ても、はっきりと見分けられない時の方が多いかもしれません。The problem is that they transform their appearance until fully grown for about five years after they fledge. So, many people can’t identify what they are for sure when they are flying up high in the sky.

イヌワシの幼鳥の写真は残念ながらありません。その代わり、こちらのリンクをご覧ください。両者を比較しています。 Unfortunately, I didn’t find even one juvenile Golden Eagle on this trip. So, I found this site instead, a very useful website comparing both juvenile birds.

白頭鷲の幼鳥は成長するにつれて徐々に頭が白くなります。また、嘴も黒から黄色に変わっていきます。The head of juvenile Bald Eagles changes from dark brown to white gradually. The beak also changes from dark to yellow.

方や、イヌワシの変化は羽を広げた時の白い部分が少しずつなくなっていくことと、嘴の根本部分の鮮やかな黄色が徐々に焦茶色になる。つまり、脚をのぞいて全体が焦茶色になっていくことだと理解しています。On the other hand, the juvenile Golden Eagle has some white patches on their wings that will go away. The base of the beak is yellow but will become dark brown later. In fact, their entire body will become dark except for their feet.

こんな風に比較しても識別はまだまだ難しい。写真を撮ってズームアップしてみないとわからない。例えばこんな写真、どっちだかわかりますか？ヒントは、尻尾の羽の色と、胸のまだら色、それに嘴です。Although I summarized the comparison, it is still very difficult to identify them until you capture them and zoom in close. For example, refer to the picture below. Which bird is this? The hint is tail and chest, and beak.

答えは、白頭鷲の幼鳥です。羽を大きく広げてもらえるとわかりやすいですね。The answer is a juvenile Bald Eagle. It’s so much easier to identify it when it spreads its wings.

大きな鳥たち Big Birds

マウントカーメルジャンクションの近く、空は雲に覆われ暗い。そこで4種類の大きな鳥に出会った。以下、地図なんですが、わかるかな？HWY9と89がぶつかる所がお勧めのカーメルジャンクションです。 The sky was dark with thick clouds on that day around Mt. Carmel Junction. I made a map of the area east of Zion. I hope you can read it. The junction of Hwy 9 and 89, is called Mt. Carmel Junction. It is my recommendation to visit there if you like birds.

2000枚の中から10枚程度を選ぶのって、本当に大変です。だから今日はこの鳥だけご紹介します。I’ve been reviewing my bird pictures, but it’s quite time consuming to choose 10 to 20 pictures out of 2000 pictures. So today, I will only introduce one bird below.

89号線を北上して行った途中、道端で出会いました。特別な鳥ではないんですが、声をかけてみました。Going up north of Hwy 89, we found them on the side of road. They are not so special, but I decided talk to them.

「すみません、ワイルドターキーさん。質問です。その胸から出てるものはなんですか？」”Hello, Mr. Turkey! Can I ask you something? What is that thing coming out from your chest?”

「あ、これ？ヒゲ。邪魔しないでくれる？今日は他の鳥の警護係りなんだから。」” What, this? This is my “beard”. Don’t bother me now. I need to guard my family today.”

カメラの救助 Rescuing My Camera

朝起きたらビーバーダム山脈方面に雪が積もっていました。I found the snow covered Beaver dam mountains when I woke up.

右のパネルに雪山が写ってます。The snow covered mountains are on the right side panel.

さっそく私のカメラ、キャノン EOS R5 で雪山を撮るぞ！とカメラを構えたら、なんか変。設定操作ができない！シャッターは押せてもLCDスクリーンで見ることも出来なければ他の設定が全て不能になっていました。Of course, I had to take pictures of it. So I grabbed my camera, Canon EOS R5, and tried to capture them, but felt something wrong. I couldn’t change the camera settings at all. All I could do was to push the shutter release button. That was it.

携帯ショット A cellphone shot

先週のザイオンの東での脱出不能事故から無事救助された事、本当にありがたく思ってます。私たちの命さえ無事なら、それだけでいいと思いました。でも、今私のカメラが壊れてしまった事に気づいて、かなりショックです。命さえ無事ならいいと思ったのにね。We were rescued from our four-wheel drive adventure east of Zion last week. I know the reason the camera didn’t work was because of this. I am so grateful that we came out ok and I did not ask anything more than our lives being safe. But now I found my camera is not working at all. I am so depressed from it although I still remember I did not ask for anything more at the time.

さっそく修理してもらう事にしました。無事に帰って来られるかな。キャノンさん、どうぞ私のカメラを救助してください！ Of course, we shipped it to the Canon repair facility immediately. I really hope they can fix it. Please Mr. Canon, rescue my camera!

ザイオンの東 East of Zion

ザイオンの東はザイオン国立公園内の深い渓谷とは違い、コロラド高原の雄大さを感じる所です。 You can see the grand views of the Colorado plateau to the east of Zion, whereas inside Zion National Park you can enjoy the views of the deep cut majestic valley.

小さいながらも山や谷、池も点在するので大きな鳥たちが好む場所と言えるかもしれません。鳥については後で書きます。 Although the scale is small, there are mountains, valleys, and ponds. I think that is one of the reasons why large birds like eagles can be found there. I will write about the birds in a separate entry later.

光を求めて来たのに暑い雲が空一面に被っていました。でも、時々差し込む光を発見すると、その美しさに息を呑みます。Most of the day the sky was covered with thick clouds. Because of that, when you occasionally find light, you find the beauty right there.

翌朝、日の出前にザイオン国立公園内に入りました。イーストテンプルかな？月が沈む前にもう光を浴び始めています。We went inside Zion National Park before sunrise the next day. Could it be the East temple? The tip of it had already gotten the morning light even before the moon set.

渓谷の朝は凍りついていましたが、光を受けて輝く岩を見ると勇気が湧いてきます。The valley was frozen, but I’ve gotten a strong power by looking at the top of the golden rocks.

ちなみに、私たちの泊まったZion Mountain Ranch は場所的にお勧めです。ロッジからザイオンの山が見えていました。夕食のバッファローのフィレミニオンも美味しくいただきました。 By the way, we stayed at Zion Mountain Ranch. You could see the mountains of Zion NP from the lodge. One of the dinner entrees, buffalo filet mignon, I can for sure recommend.

Hike 6: 化石の谷Fossil Canyon

再び、早朝のショートハイク。We went to another early morning short hike in fossil canyon. The distance was 5 km (3 miles.)

カンボジアの寺院、アンコールワット、を思い起こさせる岩が両側を囲みます。The rocks around there reminded me of temples in Cambodia, Angkor Wat.

ここはペルム紀から三畳紀の頃の地層であるらしい。そしてこのトレイルの名前通り、化石の山、Fossil Mountain という地層群なんですね。This area is the Fossil Mountain member of the Kaibab formation. The time period ranges from the Permian to the early Triassic.

だからこんな化石を発見することができました。We found tiny fossils like this.

貝殻かな、それとも植物の一部でしょうか。 Could it be a shell or a part of a plant?

距離はないのですが、谷間を進むので、結構難しい場所でした。The trail is not so long but it was challenging because we needed to go through a narrow canyon.

助け合いながら岩を登っていくハイクはとても楽しかったです。All in all, it was a fun hike with the hike members helping each other to go up and down rocks.

5K: レースまでのプラン The Plan Until The Race Day

Cotton Day 5K というビギナー向けのレースにレジスターしました。4月30日、朝7時スタートです。I registered for a beginner race, Cotton Day 5K. It starts at 7:00 am on April 30.

当日は、あいにく、鳥の会のフェスティバルがあり、バンちゃんの応援はなく、たった一人で初参加となります。レースなんて一度も参加したことがないので、一体どうなることやらちょっと不安です。そうだ、ゼッケンは当日もらうのかな？だとしたら、かなり早く会場に行かないといけませんね。Unfortunately I need to be there alone without any support because there is a Bird Fest event on the exact same time and day. I have never attended any type of race, so I am worried about how the day will go. Come to think of it, I don’t know how I will get the race bib, where should I go to check in, etc. I better be there early.

何はともあれ、日時が決まり、私の中の迷いも無くなりました。あとは逆算でプランを立て、実行するのみです。In any case, the date is set, and my mind is set, too. All I need is to make a training plan.

レースの中間で高度が約73m (239 ft)、グッと上がるところがハイライトのようですね。このグラフを見る限り、大丈夫。走れます。急に硬度を増す所をトレーニングに取り入れてみます。I understand that the elevation will go up to a high point of 239 feet (73 m) around the mid point of the route. The starting altitude is about the same as our house. It’s all right. I can run. I will add the altitude change into my training.
