白頭鷲の家族 その2 Bald Eagle Family 2
「お父さん、昨夜はお疲れ様でした。」”You worked hard last night by the lake.”
「いやいや、いつもの事だから平気だよ。子供が2羽もいるからね。」”Oh, no, that’s nothing. I have two kids. So, I have to get fish for them all the time.”
「こちらの2羽ですね。逞しそう。」”I see these are your children. They look quite healthy and tough.”
「まだ心配で目がはなせませんよ。」”I still can’t leave them alone.”
「下の子はまだ飛ぶのが下手で、お兄ちゃんにいつも揶揄われてますよ。」”Especially the younger one needs more attention. He is not so good at flying. So his brother always teases him.”
「何してるの？」と、お兄ちゃん。”What are you doing?” said the older brother.
「これ、ラクーンの残り。どうしよう？」と、弟。”Um, what should I do with the leftovers of this Raccoon?” said the younger brother.
「もう食べ終わったんなら、こうやって飛ぶ練習した方がいいよ。」”If you are done with it, you should practice flying more like this.”
「飛べるんだけど、木の上に止まるのがちょっと怖いよー」”I know. I can fly, but I am a bit afraid of landing on a tree.”
「私たちは見守るだけで、あまり口出ししない様にしてます。」と、お父さん。”We, as parents, simply observe them, and try not to interfere with their communications,” said father.

白頭鷲の家族 Bald Eagle Family
ある白頭鷲家のお話、その1です。 This is a story of one Bald Eagle family.
「早く帰って来なさい〜！もう、日が暮れかけているのよ〜！」と、お母さん。 “Hurry! Come back home now. It’s almost sunset.” said mother.
「まだ獲物探ししてたいんだけどなー。」と、子供。”Aww~, I want to keep hunting food a little longer…” mumbled her child.
「聞こえてるでしょ？早く帰ってらっしゃ〜い！」”I know you can hear me. Hurry, come back home!”
「母さん、私が呼んでこようか？」と、お父さん。”I could go and bring him back home, my dear.” proposed father.
「そうね、お願いします。」「よっしゃ！」”Thank you, please do.” “Got it!”
「でも、やっぱり私が行きます。お父さんは魚を釣って来てください。」”Oh, I will take him back home. Would you go and get a fish for us?”
その後日が沈んだ後も、お父さんが一人、湖畔の氷の上で獲物が来るのをじっと待っていました。Later on that day, the father was sitting by an icy lake even after sunset. He was waiting patiently for a fish to catch.
零下11度の夜はこうしてふけていくのでした。寒い！ The night went on like this down to 11 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. Soo cold!!!
白頭鷲とイヌワシ Bald Eagle And Golden Eagle
どうやって見分けますか？ How do you identify which is which?
白頭鷲の大人は誰でもわかりますよね。I assume you can tell easily that this bird is a Bald Eagle.
こちらは犬鷲の大人。違いははっきりしてますね。This is a Golden Eagle. They look very different.
ただ、巣立ってから完全に成長するまでの5年間、この鳥たちは姿を変えていきます。クチバシと羽の色が変わっていくので、遠い上空を飛んでいる鳥を見ても、はっきりと見分けられない時の方が多いかもしれません。The problem is that they transform their appearance until fully grown for about five years after they fledge. So, many people can’t identify what they are for sure when they are flying up high in the sky.
白頭鷲の幼鳥。This is a juvenile Bald Eagle.
イヌワシの幼鳥の写真は残念ながらありません。その代わり、こちらのリンクをご覧ください。両者を比較しています。 Unfortunately, I didn’t find even one juvenile Golden Eagle on this trip. So, I found this site instead, a very useful website comparing both juvenile birds.
白頭鷲の幼鳥は成長するにつれて徐々に頭が白くなります。また、嘴も黒から黄色に変わっていきます。The head of juvenile Bald Eagles changes from dark brown to white gradually. The beak also changes from dark to yellow.
方や、イヌワシの変化は羽を広げた時の白い部分が少しずつなくなっていくことと、嘴の根本部分の鮮やかな黄色が徐々に焦茶色になる。つまり、脚をのぞいて全体が焦茶色になっていくことだと理解しています。On the other hand, the juvenile Golden Eagle has some white patches on their wings that will go away. The base of the beak is yellow but will become dark brown later. In fact, their entire body will become dark except for their feet.
こんな風に比較しても識別はまだまだ難しい。写真を撮ってズームアップしてみないとわからない。例えばこんな写真、どっちだかわかりますか？ヒントは、尻尾の羽の色と、胸のまだら色、それに嘴です。Although I summarized the comparison, it is still very difficult to identify them until you capture them and zoom in close. For example, refer to the picture below. Which bird is this? The hint is tail and chest, and beak.
答えは、白頭鷲の幼鳥です。羽を大きく広げてもらえるとわかりやすいですね。The answer is a juvenile Bald Eagle. It’s so much easier to identify it when it spreads its wings.
白頭が帰ってきた – The White Heads Are Back Again
白頭ワシが今年ももう帰ってるって聞いたから、１８号線を北上して行った。そしたら道路脇にいた。
We’ve heard that Bald Eagles are back here already. So we went on Hwy 18 up north. And there he was on the side of the road.
わー、やっぱり大きな鳥は存在感があって、見ているだけで興奮しちゃいますね。
Large birds like Bald Eagles have a strong presence and make me excited.
近づこうとするとすぐに飛び立っていってしまうので、なかなか近くで見られなけど、白い頭は遠くからでも見つけやすい。They fly away if we try to go closer than their comfortable distance. So we can not see them from close distance, but it’s easy to find them because of their white heads.
場所争いかな？やっぱりカラスが白頭ワシを追い出そうとしてる。どの動物の世界もみんな大変ね。Could it be a territorial fight? Crows always attack other birds. Well, I guess it’s all the same for birds, other animals, and even for humans, too. We all work hard to survive everyday.
ともあれ、今年もまた出会えてよかった。In any case, I am glad to see you again this year!
空中の戦い – Battle In The Air
HWY26 をスネイク川沿いに北上中の出来事です。休憩所で景色を眺めていたら、鳥が三羽空中を舞っていました。- It happened when we were driving up north on HWY 26 by the Snake river. We were at a rest area. When I was looking at the nice river view, I found three birds in the air.
それが2羽になり、大きな白頭鷲の青年と小さい鳥が追いかけ回っているようなんです。なんと、小さい鳥が白頭鷲をアタックして、白頭鷲はさっさと退散してしまいました。- One of them disappeared, and another one of them started chasing the third. To my surprise, the one chased by the smallest bird was a juvenile Bald Eagle. I realized that the small bird was actually attacking the eagle. At the end, the eagle flew away.
なんか、おかしい。次の瞬間、今度はアカオノスリがアタックされ、空中を落ちていくところを目撃しました。でも、勇敢にも体制を立て直し、小さい鳥に向かって生きます。- Something was very strange with this situation. The small bird was stronger than the large bird? The next moment, a Red-tailed Hawk was attacked by the same small bird. I couldn’t believe my eyes. But the Red-tailed Hawk repositioned himself quickly and started chasing the small bird.
かなり怒ってますよね。- The Red-tailed Hawk was quite upset.
ところが、またしても直撃攻撃を受けてしまいました。- But he was again attacked.
ウソ、頑張れアカオノスリ！- Oh, no. Come back Red-tailed!
ようやく体制を取り戻し、再び小さい鳥と向かい合います。- He finally repositioned himself, faced to the small bird again. He was so brave.
それにしても、この小さい鳥は何者？- Man, who is this small bird anyway?
ただ者じゃない。ということは、この鳥しか考えられません。- He must be something. I can think of only one bird like this.
そう、ハヤブサです。- Yes, it’s a Peregrine Falcon.
主に自分と同程度のサイズの鳥にアタックするようですが、時に大きな鳥にも猛突進するようです。飛翔速度、時速 400 km の記録保持者ですから、体当たりされたらダメージは交通事故以上かもしれません。- Usually, they attack other birds about the same size or smaller, but they will attack even larger birds if it’s necessary. Their well-known weapon is the speed, they can fly 250mph. If they attack you with that speed, it could be worse than a traffic accident.
生死をかけての空中の戦いは、良いとか悪いとかではなく、鳥の生態そのものです。それはわかっていることですが、見ているのが苦しくなったので、結果を待たずに退散しました。- I understand that the fight in the air is not a matter of good or bad, but rather it’s natural behavior. Still, it was painful to watch. So we left there without waiting for the result of the battle.
若鶏を見分ける – Identifying Immature Birds
春の嵐、風の強い日にワシを求めて出かけました。たどり着いた所はセイントジョージより硬度が高いので、まだ寒い。そして強風と曇り空、天候はよくありません。- On a strong windy day like a spring storm, we went out to look for eagles. The place we went to was much higher altitude than Saint George, so it’s still very cold. With strong wind and cloudy weather, it wasn’t a good day at all.
それでも、白い頭に黒いボディーは遠くからでも見つけられました。というか、遠すぎます。- But still, we could see Bald Eagles with white heads and black bodies from far away. And they were very far away.
ここにも。Here it is.
ここにも。There it is.
そして、ここにも。And there it is, too.
でも、みんな飛んでないんです。なぜか。- But for some reasons, none of them were flying. Why?
彼らはエネルギー節約のために、グライドするのが好きなんです。だから、地面が温められた午後、上昇気流に乗って、あまり羽をパタパタさせることなくグライドするんですね。だから、こんな日は、頑張らない。カラスやタカたちは風に向かってパタパタしても、全然前に進んでいませんでした。成長した白頭鷲はそんなバカなことは最初からしないんですね。 – It’s because they like to glide in the air to save their energy. To do that, they go out in the afternoon, because an ascending air current is created by the Sun heating the ground. Ravens and some hawks were trying to fly but were mostly blown away by the wind or struggled just to stay in one place. So adult eagles didn’t fly on such a day.
「残念だけど、もう帰ろう。今日は期待できないよ。」と私。ところが突然、ジャーン！遠くからでもちゃんと認識できる大きな鳥。こっちに向かってこようとしている。- “Let’s go home. We can’t expect to see any eagles today,” said I. But suddenly a large bird appeared in front of us. Although it was far away, we could recognize that it’s trying to come our way. Here it is.
「これは、何？イヌワシ？それとも・・・」と、私。 - “What is this? Is it a Golden eagle? or…” said I.
ばんちゃんが「白頭鷲の若鶏だよ。」- “It’s an immature Bald Eagle” said Banchan.
一気にテンションが上がります。 – Immediately, I felt invigorated with those words.
もう一羽見つけました。- We found another one.
これも白頭鷲の若鳥かな？と思っていたんですが、よくよく観察して見ると、違う。- We thought this was also an immature Bald Eagle. But after a careful observation, we concluded that, in fact, it wasn’t.
これは、イヌワシの若鳥です。やった〜！！！ついにイヌワシも撮れた！- This is an immature Golden Eagle. Woohoo!!! Finally, I’ve gotten a Golden Eagle, too!
ところで、若鳥の見分けは難しいですよね。そこでウェブでお勉強して見るとわかりました。腕を広げた時の脇の下が白いのは白頭鷲で、そうじゃないのはイヌワシ。そして、尾の模様が違います。茶色の部分がイヌワシの方が広いです。- By the way, it’s very difficult to identify immature eagles. So I studied up on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles. And these are my findings. Immature Bald Eagles have white underwing sockets when they open their wings. But immature Golden Eagles don’t. The tail patterns are also different. Golden Eagles have wider brown tips than bald eagles.
最初の2枚は2-3年成長した白頭鷲の若鳥。次の2枚は1-2年成長したイヌワシの若鳥じゃないかなーと思います。- The first two pictures are 2 or 3 year immature Bald Eagles. The following two pictures are 1 to 2 year immature Golden Eagles. That’s my educated guess based on my study.
それにしても、こんな嵐の日に元気に飛んでいるのは若鳥だけなんて、人間も同じね。- By the way, it’s funny that only immature eagles (young) were flying even in the strong wind. It’s kind of same with humans, isn’t it?
おまけ版。これがこの日のイヌワシのベストショットでした。力強く風に向かって飛ぶ姿、いいですよね。でも、これを最初から使うのには気が引けました。- This is an extra. The shot below is an immature Golden Eagle flying against the wind, the best shot of the day. But I wasn’t comfortable using it.
なぜなら、フォトショップで電線を取り除いたからです。これがオリジナル。言わなければわからない。フォトショップ、すごいね。- That’s because there were electrical lines crossing in front of it’s left wing which I removed using Photoshop. This is the original. I know you might never have noticed it if I didn’t say so, right? Photoshop is indeed powerful.
白頭鷲との遭遇 – Close Encounters With a Bald Eagle
家の近くの小さな池のほとりから、ビーバーダム山脈方向を見渡します。すると、小さい黒い物体を発見。写真中央左め。 – Looking out in the direction of the Beaver Dam Mountains from a small pond near our house, Banchan found a small black object in the air.
ドローン？カラス？ – A drone? A Raven?
いや、白頭鷲だ！ – No, it’s a Bald Eagle!
こっちに向かって飛んでくるぞ！ – It’s coming this way!
やばい、すごい接近！ – No kidding, it’s coming too close…!
私たちの背面の岩に舞い降りたと思ったら、こんな風に翼を広げて再び飛び立ちました。- It landed on a rock behind us, but took flight again by opening its wings like this.
離陸。 – Lift-off. 
両足を下ろしたままの姿って、ハンググライダーをしている人みたい。- It didn’t tuck in both legs for a while, reminded me of a hang gliding person.
急接近された時は突然のことで、カメラを向けても早くてピンボケ、しかも画像内に収まらない。大興奮の遭遇でした。- When it approached so close to us, it should have been a perfect opportunity for great shots, but most of the shots are out of focus and too large to fit within the viewfinder. It happened suddenly and too fast, but a great moment of a close encounter with a Bald Eagle.
白頭鷲、やっぱり迫力ありますね！もう北に向かっていく時期なのでしょうか。 – The Bald Eagle is indeed quite powerful. Could it be almost time to migrate north?
クエイルクリーク貯水池 – Quail Creek Reservoir
クエイルクリーク貯水池に白頭ワシがいると聞いて行ってみました。 – We’ve heard that Bald Eagles are at Quail Creek Reservoir, so we went.
なんとザイオン国立公園の岩山が見えます。 – Surprisingly, we could see the peaks of Zion National park.
そして、期待通り白頭ワシに出会うことができました。空高く飛行していたので、私の400ｍｍレンズではこれが精一杯でした。- And we could indeed see a Bald Eagle. It was flying so high in the sky, this is my best shot with my 400mm lens.
こんにちは。- Hello!
アカオノスリもいました。- A Red-tailed hawk was also there. 
地層が作る綺麗な模様。地質学者じゃなくても嬉しくなる場所。- The rock strata create a pretty design on the hills. You don’t need to be a geologist to enjoy the view. 
白頭鷲 – もう少しかな
どうやら一羽は巣立って行きましたが、もう一羽はまだのようです。巣の近くに止まっていたのは、巣たちできない方でした。
ずーっと一人。寂しそう。
二本の枝を交互に行ったり来たりしているようです。でも、まだコワゴワと歩いて登ってます。羽を広げて飛びたそうな気配なんだけど、まだまだ。
お母さんは来てくれるのか心配していましたが、今朝、お母さんが食料をくわえてきてくれていた所を目撃。安堵しました。
この子は甘えん坊で、お母さんがいると、まだ口うつして食べ物をもらってます。一人でも食べられるのにね。
面白いです。鳥にも色々な性格があるんですね。
それにしてもですよ。この怖がりで甘えん坊さんは、果たして野生の世界で生きていけるのでしょうか。
こういう鳥は野鳥保護協会のような所で保護された方がいいんじゃないかなんて思っちゃうのは、やはり勝手な考えなんでしょうねぇ？
追伸：こんなことを書いた数時間後、飛び立っていった兄弟が帰ってきました。ほほ〜！嬉しいよね、やっぱり。
白頭鷲 – 巣立ちました
寂しいです。
この3ヶ月間、いえ、産卵から数えると4ヶ月弱、慣れ親しんだ巣は、空っぽです。
子供たちの巣立ちは、嬉しいことのはずなのに、手放さなければならない親の感情面からは寂しい。
クルクルとカメラを回して、近くの枝に止まっている一羽を発見。（私が発見したわけではないですが）
しばらくはこの巣に頻繁に帰ってくるとか。
一羽はこの通り、まだいるんですが、もう一羽は見当たりません。
もう獲物の確保の仕方など、知っているんでしょうか。魚の釣り方、もう覚えたのかな。
ほとんどの若鳥は次の春を迎える前に死んでいってしまうということです。寒い冬が来る前に、いえ、食べ物が豊富なこの夏に体力をつけて、強くたくましくなっていないと越冬ができないんですね。
ただただ、祈るのみです。
白頭鷲の赤ちゃん – その後
3月末に孵化してから2ヶ月が経ちました。2羽の白頭鷲の赤ちゃんたちは無事に成長を遂げています。4月11日、12日の頃。 
そして、これが今日5月30日の姿。翼を広げると、巣の幅と同じぐらい。サイズもすでに両親と同じぐらいです。
片足で立つこともできるし、横の幹に止まることもできるようになりました。
この成長ぶりは驚きです。でも、まだ巣立ちできないので、両親が運んできてくれる魚を待つのみです。多分、飛び立つ時はきっと近い。その瞬間を見逃したくなくて、毎日サイトにアクセスしています。

ちなみに、クチバシはまだ黄色くなく、頭もまだ白くないです。色の変化は3-5年とされています。その後、15年以上生き続けるのだそうです。ただ、綺麗に変身できるまで生きのびられるのは10羽のうち1羽ぐらいなんだそうです。自然の厳しさ、切ないですね。
