Western Chorus Frog

– This is a Western Chorus Frog which hopped out suddenly yesterday to our house.

– I didn’t know that frogs can live in desert locations like here.

– The black tube that he is holding onto is a part of the garden irrigation system that is less than 10 mm diameter.  So it means that the frog is about 4-5 cm.

– It is next to the fountain right outside of the front door.  It means that it’s in the territory of Woodhouse’s Toads.

– It became a daily routine for Mr. Toad to take bathe in the fountain every night.  Can they share the water fountain, and co-exist?

Red Cliffs Recreation Area

– It takes about 20 minutes to travel on hwy 15 from Saint George, UT to Red Cliffs Recreation Area.  I think it’s a part of Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA).

– This is a view from near the entrance.  Pine Valley is visible in a background.

– We spent about 4 hours in the morning there before it got too hot.  The green colored area in the below map is the picnic area, and 4-5 camp sites are around it.

– One of the special features of this area is the site of dinosaur tracks.

– I forgot the name of it, but it’s the foot print of a dinosaur.

– There were dinosaurs at the exact same place 190 milion years ago.  It’s such a far far long time ago that I can’t comprehend it, but I simply at awe about the fact that it has been there all this time.

– Here, it gave me a feeling of some similarity to Zion National Park that is also in the Colorado plateau.  I can easily guess that it will be a river during the rainy season.

– The reflection from the surrounding red rocks made the trees red as well.

– This NCA protects the Desert Tortoise which is nearly extinct.

– It’s not so far away from Snow Canyon State park which is right across a mountain, yet this area is so much quieter than Snow Canyon.  Definitely I want to come back here again.  I want to find Bearclaw Poppy next time which can be found only in this NCA and no other place in the world.

– The last Wren finally fledged!

– It was such a drama keeping me on my toes the past few days.

– This is the last chick I found in our backyard.

– The other chicks aren’t there anymore.  But the mother Wren repeats  carrying their food and flying into a bush near the bird house.

– “Are they all right?” I asked, but of course, she didn’t answer.

– But I hear the two older chicks’ chirping noises from this bush, so they must be in there.

– And this little one, what can we do?  It tried so hard to go up the fence by stretching its wings but couldn’t make it off the ground.  It simply keeps chirping.

– The challenge was going up on top of the fence where it’s mother’s voice kept calling from.  Every attempt was as if it was the last chance.

– The fence was too high for it.  Banchan and I discussed many times if we should attempt to help it or not because it might die if the attempt didn’t work.

– The only hope we had was that the parents were still there.  The mother was on top of the fence, and father was on a branch of a tree nearby and they both kept calling for their chick.

– After a while, suddenly, the chick succeeded to hop on a nearby bench, then hop onto the next level, and finally landed on the fence.  Hooray!  It was like a miracle.  We would never see the chick again after it went into that tree.

– It’s a big relief, but at the same time, we will miss it so much.  Thank you wren family for giving us excitement and hope from beginning of June till mid July!

Wren’s Chicks Grow Fast

– Wren’s chicks were so fragile and couldn’t do much but sleep and eat, but now they have started moving around more.

– It looks so cozy there in the sunshine.

– Wow, a new hairdue with hair decoration?

– Or, Einsteine style?

– Got it, it’s Uncle Scrooge style!

– Don’t tease me!  I already have feathers now but my old downy hair won’t come off yet.

– See?  I have already such a nice set of feathers.

– Here is my front.  Am I good looking or what?

– It’s time to get moving.  Oldest brother has already hopped onto a branch!

でも、難しそうだそ・・・ – but, it’ looks so hard…

– It’s so high.  Not sure how I can get up there…

– Hurry, come up, my younger brother!  It feels so good to be up on the branch with a nice breeze blowing.

– Wren’s story, to be continued tomorrow.

- Wrens are born safely!

– It was not a usual day in our backyard.

Somehow, the Wren didn’t want to fly away from one particular spot.  It looked in my direction and chirped…

– then turned left and chirped in that direction…

– Shhhh, looking into the lower part of a rose bush, ever so quietly, we found them!!!

– One, two, and three chicks!  The wren was protecting its babies.  Good job!

– They don’t do much, they simply sleep a lot.  By the way, I wonder why they didn’t use the birdhouse?  I thought they were using it.

– It seems somewhat safe down there at the deeper part of the rose bush, but there is no protection for them, although they are well hidden.  Can you see its pink skin under the wings?  No way they can run away from a snake, for example.

– To be continued tomorrow.

For a Pleasant Morning

– Russian sage goes so well for a pleasant morning,

– Swaying in the gentle breeze, it makes me feel so good.

– Hey, listen.  Let’s dance together.

– It will make you feel even better for the rest of the day.

– Lesser Goldfinches flew from one branch to the other in the Russian sage, which gave me the impression that they were dancing in the flowers.  It was such a pleasant morning today.

House Finches Everywhere.

– These are House Finches which I often found in our backyard when we lived in California as well.  They are quite sturdy and can adapt themselves into variety of environments.

– They are quite common birds, but it gives me new excitement as if they are different birds when I see them on Ocotillo branches in Saint George, which I like to call lizard country.

– I found a male House Finch on a branch of Creosote bush.  You better clean up around your beak.

– Oh, excuse me, it’s your lunch time.

– Now I understand why I find them in Creosote bushes often.  There are seeds inside the fluffy puff balls.  House Finches carefully extract the seeds and eat them.  That’s why the fluffy things are around his beak.

Hummingbird and Ocotillo

– Ocotillo is a shrub which produces red flowers at the tip of the long branches.  It’s not a Cactus, although its habitat is desert.  It’s been debated how long it can live, but not yet concluded; about 60 to 100 years.  According to our gardener, Devon, it revives even after totally dried up sometimes.

– I was lucky to witness the moment an Anna’s Hummingbird was challenging to get Ocotillo’s nectar the other day.  The tip of Ocotillo’s branch was full of delicious looking flowers!

Which one should I try first…

– How about here?

– It was good, but the higher flowers may be better.

– Yes, it looks good around here.  Oh no, they are still buds…

– Yummy, the top is always best!

– I felt somehow it was much easier to take these pictures.  It’s possibly because I was struggling to capture Verdins; Hummingbirds are slightly larger than Verdins, and on top of that, Hummingbirds hover around flowers.  So, it gives me a great still moment to take decent shots.

False Alarm Falcon Shots

– Although I was writing about Falcons with stars in my eyes, I discovered, by comparing my pictures on the trusted bird websites, it was, in fact, not a Falcon.  I was sooo disappointed, I didn’t feel like writing blog entries for the past two days.

– These are my shots.  The impression they gave me led me to believe it’s a falcon by looking at the tail, much rounder body shape, and the wings aren’t as wide as Hawks that I often see.

– I thought it was a Merlin Falcon, but it is most likely a Cooper’s Hawk, unfortunately.

– How silly I was to think it was a Falcon.  First of all, they should have migrated far north a while ago, avoiding a place like here where the daily temperature goes above 100 degree during the summer.  I still will look forward to seeing them during the winter time.

– In any case, the Cooper’s Hawk gave me an excitement as well, since it’s my first time capturing it.

– Look at how it flies. Isn’t it impressive? What do you think it found?

– On the other hand, this is a Red-tailed Hawk.

– In comparison to the Cooper’s Hawk, it doesn’t give me as much excitement, because I have more opportunities for seeing it. But still, it gives me a firm presence when it comes down closer to the ground as its wings are so much wider.

Addendum:  An English translation was added to the original Japanese post.  It’s been proofread by a native English speaker, my husband.  Thank you!

Desert Spiny Lizard
