Nest Making is Everywhere

How are you doing since last time, Mr. Bewick’s Wren?”

- “It’s getting there but still a long way to go.”

– “What a Kodak moment Mr. House Finch!”

– “By the Way, is your nest making going well?”

– “He doesn’t help me so much.”

– “That’s not true.  See?  I am gathering twigs like this.”

Have you completed your nest already, Mr. Verdin?”

- “I wish I could say it’s complete, but I need a little more material.”

Oh, this is another Bewick’s Wren.  How do you like the new home?”

– “It’s all right.”

– “That’s good to hear.  By the way, have I told you that we will move this house a little bit?”

- “Are you serious?  I haven’t heard anything like that.”

I will tell you for sure later.”

2 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 2)

– Verdin is even more cheerful with blue sky today.

– I found their nest near the mail box.  A verdin brought a big chunk of some fluffy thing.

– Verdin repositioned for the next move.

–  Up you go!

– This time he brought a long twig.

– Wow, I am impressed the way he can carry it.

– I didn’t expect to see this because I have read somewhere that only the male Verdin makes the nest.  But that was wrong.  Both verdins participate in building the nest.

– It’s so much faster needless to say.

– It looks like the completion of the nest is near.

1 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 1)

– I had an epiphany since I started observing birds.

– Just live, it’s precious by itself!

– Now, Verdin are in the middle of making nests.  The pictures below are Verdins working hard, bringing twigs longer than themselves, and bringing fluffy stuff to the future nest.

– But a week ago, we had a very windy night.  I worried about the nest, and sure enough, the bundle of twigs fell apart with half hanging from the tree.  I haven’t seen the Verdin pair since then.  I wonder if they have given it up.  My heart aches.

– Going through many hardships, they will, make their nest somewhere, even if it’s not here anymore.  I will observe a little longer.

Easter Gift

– Our neighbor gave us a pot of Lilies two weeks ago.  The kitchen counter brightened up when I placed it on top of the kitchen counter.

– One by one, the buds started opening up, and now we have five flowers blooming.

– It’s quite refreshing to have lilies greeting us in the morning.

– By the way, this year Easter Sunday is April 12th.  I started worrying about whether the blooms will last that long.  We have two more buds to go.

Hooded Oriole

– I was inside the camouflage tent in the backyard.  I was so bored with no action in the morning, so I started playing a game on my iPad.  Then, I caught something with the left edge of my eye.  At the same time, I realized that it’s so noisy outside of the tent.

– So I looked around in a hurry, and found something.  My heart started pounding faster as my adrenaline flow increased.

– Could they be Hooded Orioles?

– Two Hooded Orioles flew around and around the space of about 10 houses with sonic speed.  It was so fast that I could almost hear the sound “zoom, zoom”.  It seems that the other birds stayed out of their way.

– This is my best shot of the day.

– I assume it will go back to normal around here once the spring love affair is over, and I hope I have more opportunity to take pictures of them.

Camouflage Tent

– I normally take backyard bird pictures from inside the house through double paned glass windows.  So the quality of the pictures naturally degrades.

– Some people may say, “You are not a professional photographer.  Don’t you care about your photo quality?”  So, we bought a camouflage tent.

– Preparing for a long wait, I brought in, of course, a camera, and other necessities like a chair, table, junk food, drink, ipad, etc.

。。 – One hour, then two hours passed by but nothing had happened.  I expected to see a lot of action.  What’s wrong???

– Is it because it was a cold, cloudy day?

– I had almost given up after three hours when it came!

– Indeed, the quality is much better.

– I can see good detail in the images even on a cloudy day.  Isn’t that great?

– Bewick’s wren will be busy for a while, and I will be too, following them.

After the Rain

– This is the Red Rock view from our backyard garden at sunset.  The gorgeous light lit the rock as it emerged from the clouds after the rain.

– The next day, we went up to Scout Cave.

- Make sure we stay 6 feet apart and it should be all right. The two in the middle are married, so it’s ok.

- Let’s do what we can until this COVID-19 crisis is over.

Flower Thief

– It’s quite shocking when you wake up one day, to see that flowers disappeared suddenly.

– These were pansies before they disappeared.  They recently started blooming and would be even prettier from then on.

-But I know why and how, because it wasn’t the first time.  This cottontail rabbit is the habitual thief.

– Even though the gate is carefully wrapped with wire, it comes in by pushing the bottom corner of the wire.

– Unfortunately, the flower thief can’t go out once it comes in because the wire won’t bend outward.

– Banchan and I spent a while chasing it all over the backyard. Finally we got it to successfully leave.  We have reinforced the corner of the wire.  It’s like a war between the cottontail and us.

– Daisy, it’s your turn now.  Live well!

Second House for Spring

- This is the second house for Spring.

– This is the Bewick’s wren pair who decided to lay their eggs here.

Yes, that’s it.  Bring it up here quick!” said the wife.

- “I am not sure if she knows how hard it is to find fluffy fuzz-balls like this.” said the husband.

– “Does this work?”

Nest making is a huge project for us.  We don’t have much time left.” said the wife to me.

- “That sounds tough.  You look quite stressed.  A few strings of fuzz are around your face and inside your mouth.  I hope you have time to rest a little.”

The coat

– “What a great looking coat! It must be very warm. Are you going out somewhere, Ms. Abert’s Towhee?”

– “Oh, her husband. You are here, too?”

- “Yes. I told her that it’s already warm so she doesn’t need to wear the winter coat.  What can I do, that’s her favorite coat.”

Sunset View in Between Rain

COVID-19のニュースも聞き飽きたし・・・ – It’s been raining every day.  We were tired of the COVID-19 news as well.

– We went up a hill when the clouds opened above us and the rain stopped briefly.

– Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Road goes up high enough that it was cold even with two jackets on.

– We kept pushing the shutter button repeatedly, even though our fingers became like frozen sticks.

– It was already dark when I realized that it was hard to control my camera.

– I though this was my last shot before packing things up to go back to our car.

– But suddenly Banchan said “Look behind you!”  I did.

Wow!  The sky was on fire.

– Bird Husk?

- Under a tree branch, one, two, two cicada husks.  And what is this?  Is it a bird husk?

– “That’s not funny!” said Bewick’s wren.

– “Sorry, but what are you doing?” said me.

– “I am so busy now because I need to find a house and a girl for me.  Ahem.”

「ら、ら、ら〜」 – ” La la la ~”

– Looking for a spring home and your future wife?  Now I know why you are so busy.  By the way, this is the house the wren was considering to move in.  It’s 10 years old, but the style is modern and most of all, safe.  I hope he will take it.

– But I wonder why Japanese name is “Shirohara misosazai (white belly wren)”.  It has white belly indeed, but the name came from Mr. Bewick who is a friend of John James Audubon (the famous ornithologist).  I want to keep Mr. Bewick’s name in there.  I just wanted to say it although no one care my opinion…
