Bug Catching Service

- Good news!  A verdin has visited us in our backyard.

- It landed on a rose branch I nicely pruned in January.

- Better than just one, it was a pair.

- It is indeed a good year for me.  As I observed them more, I have discovered that they especially like rose bushes for some reasons.  It seems they are eating something.

– Could it be “a bug?”

– It is, indeed!

- Pay attention to the aphid bug inside the pink circle.

Gulp!

- The bug is gone, eaten by the Verdin.

- How lucky I am!  I never imagined that I could get a free bug catching service by Verdins.

- I didn’t see them yesterday or today.  I wonder if they have eaten all the bugs already.  But I am sure they are on the job whether we are watching or not.

Smart Bird

– I have found a female Great-tailed Grackle by the shore of a lake.  It’s considered to be one of the smart birds.

- They eat everything and can be found very commonly.  It looks like she has found a crab today.

- Their breeding area has expanded quite a lot, 5500% between 1880 to 2000 according to Wikipedia.  Is it because they are smart?  Corina Logan’s videos about behavioral flexibility studies with them at UC Santa Barbara are well known.  She has published several research papers, but more research is needed to confirm her conclusions.  Here is her website.

Symbol of Spring

– Many American Robins visited our garden in the early Spring every year when we lived in Northern California.  Robins are known to be a symbol of Spring and happiness.  This is our first Spring in Saint George,  I haven’t seen them yet.  I wonder if they will migrate here soon.

- However, I have found another symbolic bird for Spring and happiness, the Norther Rough-Winged Swallow.

-“Spring…!  Spring has come!!!” said the swallow.

Thank you, Mr. Swallow for telling us that Spring has come.  Have you seen Mr. Robin by any chance?”

– “I don’t know.  Maybe I haven’t seen him yet.”

- “Would you tell him to come over here when you meet him?”

OK, but look at this sky.  It’s so big.  The chance is slim to see him.  Spring!  Spring has come!”

– A Big Catch, Coot!

– What are you eating, Coot?

– It’s a secret.

– Come on, I won’t tell anyone about it.  Show me.

- Well then, here it is.

- OMG, it’s a big catch!  I didn’t know you eat such a big fish also.

- Yes, I do.  It’s an outstandingly lucky day today for me, but I won’t share it with anyone.

- FR006 is a Forest Service Road also known as Veyo Shoal Creek Road running from Utah State Route 219 to the town of Veyo.  It’s paved up to Enterprise Reservoir but after that, it becomes an unpaved road.  You need an offroad vehicle to take this road.  We didn’t plan it but decided, on the spur of the moment, to check it out on the way back from the the town of Enterprise.

- Views from Enterprise reservoir.

- OK, we are ready for an adventure.

– We were moved so much by the unknown road.

- Is it because few come here?  The beauty of the views took our breath away.

- The amazing view made me realize that you can get a great experience close to home, not just far away.

- The unexpected reward of an experience like this makes me so happy.

- Yes, happiness is also right here next to me because I am the one who creates it.

Red-tailed Hawk’s Portrait shot

– Thank you for being patient with me today in such bad weather, Red-tailed Hawk!

– Let’s get down to business.  Make a pose for a shot.

– Not bad with that squared face staring right at the camera.

- Let’s try another with your old standby pose.

- You nailed it!  You’re fan club members will love it!

- On a strong windy day it is hard for me to hold a camera. At the same time, birds like you can’t fly well either.  So I must thank the bad weather for being able to get closer to you, Mr. Hawk.

Identifying Immature Birds

- On a strong windy day like a spring storm, we went out to look for eagles.  The place we went to was much higher altitude than Saint George, so it’s still very cold.  With strong wind and cloudy weather, it wasn’t a good day at all.

- But still, we could see Bald Eagles with white heads and black bodies from far away.  And they were very far away.

Here it is.

There it is.

And there it is, too.

- But for some reasons, none of them were flying.  Why?

– It’s because they like to glide in the air to save their energy.  To do that, they go out in the afternoon, because an ascending air current is created by the Sun heating the ground.  Ravens and some hawks were trying to fly but were mostly blown away by the wind or struggled just to stay in one place.  So adult eagles didn’t fly on such a day.

- “Let’s go home.  We can’t expect to see any eagles today,” said I.  But suddenly a large bird appeared in front of us. Although it was far away, we could recognize that it’s trying to come our way.  Here it is.

- “What is this?  Is it a Golden eagle? or…” said I.

- “It’s an immature Bald Eagle” said Banchan.

– Immediately, I felt invigorated with those words.

- We found another one.

- We thought this was also an immature Bald Eagle. But after a careful observation, we concluded that, in fact, it wasn’t.

This is an immature Golden Eagle.  Woohoo!!! Finally, I’ve gotten a Golden Eagle, too!

- By the way, it’s very difficult to identify immature eagles.  So I studied up on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles.  And these are my findings.  Immature Bald Eagles have white underwing sockets when they open their wings.  But immature Golden Eagles don’t.  The tail patterns are also different.  Golden Eagles have wider brown tips than bald eagles.

- The first two pictures are 2 or 3 year immature Bald Eagles.  The following two pictures are 1 to 2 year immature Golden Eagles.  That’s my educated guess based on my study.

- By the way, it’s funny that only immature eagles (young) were flying even in the strong wind.  It’s kind of same with humans, isn’t it?

- This is an extra.  The shot below is an immature Golden Eagle flying against the wind, the best shot of the day.  But I wasn’t comfortable using it.

- That’s because there were electrical lines crossing in front of it’s left wing which I removed using Photoshop.  This is the original.  I know you might never have noticed it if I didn’t say so, right?  Photoshop is indeed powerful.

Close Encounters With a Bald Eagle

– Looking out in the direction of the Beaver Dam Mountains from a small pond near our house, Banchan found a small black object in the air.

– A drone?  A Raven?

– No, it’s a Bald Eagle!

– It’s coming this way!

– No kidding, it’s coming too close…!

- It landed on a rock behind us, but took flight again by opening its wings like this.

– Lift-off.

- It didn’t tuck in both legs for a while, reminded me of a hang gliding person.

- When it approached so close to us, it should have been a perfect opportunity for great shots, but most of the shots are out of focus and too large to fit within the viewfinder.  It happened suddenly and too fast, but a great moment of a close encounter with a Bald Eagle.

– The Bald Eagle is indeed quite powerful.  Could it be almost time to migrate north?

The First Verdin

- Yes, I found you, Verdin, beyond many branches!  Be still just a little.

– I got you!  You are so cute with the yellow head and chestnut shoulder patches.  I have a feeling that I am lucky this year.

- By the way, this is a Verdin nest found in our garden.  The entrance to the nest is at the side near the bottom of the nest.

The first Anna’s Hummingbird

– How pretty you are!  Please look this way.

– Who, me?

- Yes, you.  May I take a picture?

No, never~!!!

- It takes only less than a minute. Please!

– Well, then.

- Wow, what a beautiful color.  You look like a completely different bird.

– You don’t know anything about us?  Our heads are covered in iridescent colored feathers.  So the color changes depending on the direction of the sunlight and how you look at us.

- You should study more about us before taking a picture of me.

- I see.  I will do that.

- I am tired now, I will go back to sleep.

Thank you for the shots and a quick bird lesson.  You are the first Anna’s Hummingbird I have seen this year!

The third eye

– An Extraordinally stunt!

- I see, two lizards.

– Nice trick Side-blotched lizards!

– By the way, I wrote about this already last year, but can you see the third eye on top of the head?
