Delish Macaroons

Hmm, the appearance doesn’t look as good as the picture. But it is sooooo yummy.

They became so flat. I am wondering if I didn’t give enough time for the macaroon batter to chill in the refrigerator before baking. Could this be the cause of the flat macaroons?

The recipe called for “Matzo meal” which I had never heard of before. Is it a common item to keep in the pantry? After a web search, I understood that I could substitute the matzo meal with crackers. So I crushed some crackers and used it. Could it be the cause of the flat macaroons?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In any case, I am so happy because it’s been a while since I could bake a delicious dish. The Coconut & Almond Macaroons, you are worthy of five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Green-tailed Towhee

How many birds are in the yellow bush?

I don’t have an answer for that, but my guess is more than one bird is in there.

Oh? Whose legs are they?

I followed it so hard for a while but it didn’t reveal its face. But I know it is a Green-tailed Towhee. It has a deep olive colored tail, and an orange cap, or orange colored mohawk hair. Can you see the orange hair?

The Green-tailed Towhee is secretive and hard to find although Banchan has captured it successfully already. I know I can get it someday soon!

Captured by Banchan.

Meaning of Snake Plant Flowers

The Spanish broom right outside of my study is fully blooming. The creosote plant also looks happy with yellow flowers. Aren’t they pretty? But I never open the window for viewing them because I have pollen allergy unfortunately.

On the contrary, the house plants don’t bloom and make me feel very safe.

That’s what I thought all this time. But I was so shocked to see flowers growing from my snake plant. I have never seen anything like it and didn’t know what to do with it.

I quickly searched through websites and found this:

You consider it as a lucky sign and as a rare incident. However, at the same time, the plant is telling you that it is so tight in the pot and needs more water. In other words, it is screaming, “Re-potting please!”

。。 Got it. “I will re-pot you soon.”

Ironman Ended

My impression of the Ironman World Championship was that it was completed successfully because of both the athletes and the volunteers.

The women’s champion, Daniela , on the very right in a white dress.
The men’s champion, Kristian Blummenfelt, on the very right in a dark shirt.

I didn’t really know the whole story of why this event was moved to St. George until yesterday. It was held here in St. George as a replacement for last year’s 2021 race in Hawaii which was canceled due to the covid-19 shutdown.

I was wondering about it, but now it makes sense. Our volunteer shirt design and the building decorations were Hawaian.

In any case, Congratulations everyone!!!

Awesome Ironman

The Ironman World Championship ended, though some athletes may be still running. The event came to St. George from Hawaii for the first time this year.

Yesterday’s Ironman Village

I volunteered last year for the half Ironman race at the goal line. It was such a memorable moment. This time, I helped at the aid station near our house.

The first athlete (maybe)

The job was to hand off a water bottle to an athlete. Easy, right? Well, actually, not so easy. See the video below. He dropped the first bottle and got the second bottle successfully.

I will be volunteering at the celebration banquet tomorrow night.

Mountain Blue Bird

This is a male Mountain Blue Bird. I am so moved by the refreshing blue color. The female Mountain Blue Bird is unfortunately gray. They live in western part of North America.

By the way, the Ironman World-championship is tomorrow.

I will volunteer starting in the morning again. I am so excited about it already, and looking forward to see the dramatic moments.

Ash-Throated Flycatcher

The Ash-throated Flycatcher is, as the name says, a bird that catches insects while it is flying. It’s an early riser and finishes its chores in the early morning. That way it can stay quiet during the day to avoid hot weather. Oh, another important fact about it is that it doesn’t drink water. It takes liquid from the bugs that it consumes.

I wish I could capture an image of it catching a bug, but it’s nearly impossible with my camera skill.

These are my best shots for the bird flying. Although we can’t see its face, let’s imagine that it has a bug in its beaks.

Black-Chinned Sparrow

The Black-chinned Sparrow lives in the southwest United States to Mexico.

We were lucky that we could capture the male bird clearly showing black color on his chin. The male shows the black chin during the breeding season only. They look very much like female birds without the black chin outside of breeding season.

Juniper Titmouse

The Juniper Titmouse is a tiny bird with a crested head living in pinyon or juniper trees。

They look very much like the Oak Titmouse but its color is more pale gray compared to the Oak Titmouse which are more brownish. They also live in different places. The Juniper Titmouse lives in the region of 2,250-8,000 feet elevation in juniper woodlands. On the other hand, the Oak Titmouse lives in Oak trees in California.

Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay

The Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay is similar to the California Scrub-Jay, but the chest color is more grayish and the beak is narrower.

Some say that they can be seen standing on the backs of mule deer. They pick off and eat ticks from the deer, so deer don’t mind them on top of them. How nice to know they help each other. I sure hope to see such a sight one of these days.

Spotted Towhee

The Spotted Towhee belongs to the sparrow group and it lives in North America. It’s not a rare bird. I have spotted it even in our backyard when we lived in Northern California.

The red eyes, aren’t they impressive?

We don’t see them around St. George, but they are in the surrounding higher elevations at about 6,000 feet and above.
