この地に引っ越してきてから3年以上経ちました。毎日見える私たちの岩、MVロックは毎日私たちを励ますように見守ってくれていました。 It’s been more than three years since we moved to this place. Our rock, MV rock, that we see everyday protected us and encouraged us since then.
今年最後の日のMVロックは雨のため、雲の中に隠れていました。 MV rock was hidden in thick clouds due to the rain today, the last day of the year.
時折姿を見せてもほんの一瞬だけ。 Every once in a while, it revealed its face but it was only for an instant.
そこで、過去に撮ったMVロックの写真を探してみました。 So I searched the MV rock images I took in the past.
2021年の1月、雪が降った時。 Snow covered MV rock in January 2021.
2020年、6月。 In June 2020.
そして、引っ越してきたばかりの頃、2019年7月の夕暮れ。 Lastly, an image around sunset time in July 2019. It was around the time we moved here.
来年も一緒に心が震えるほどの思い出をつくろうね！ Let’s make many more marvelous memories together in next year as well!
雨のため、ハンキングが中止となり、思いついてザイオン国立公園の西側に行ってきました。 We went to the west side of Zion National Park spontaneously because our group hike was cancelled due to rain.
私の好きなレッドビュートが煙っていました。 My favorite Red Butte was smoky.
更に奥へ向かいます。 We went on further.
雪が止んでいて、ラッキーでした。 We were lucky that the snow stopped.
渓谷の中とは違う美しさです。 West Zion has a different beauty from the valley.
木々が嬉しそうに踊ってます。 The snow covered trees were dancing happily.
それも束の間、霧が立ち込めてきました。 But then, the weather changed quickly and the fog set in.
もう何も見えなくなってきたので引き返すことにしました。 We couldn’t see much any longer, so we decided to go back home.
雷もゴロゴロ鳴り始めました。 The thunder started rumbling, too.
雷の写真を撮るのが好きなバンちゃんは、名残惜しそうでしたが、フロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雹の攻撃に遭い、早々に退散しました。 Banchan who loves to take lightning pictures seemed sad to leave there, but super strong hail poured onto our car, so we left there quickly.
ザイオンの西の景色は、私たちをホクホクさせてくれました。でも、実はもっとホクホクするものに遭遇しましたが、その話は明日書きます。 West Zion pleased us and we were content with it. But actually, we received a big surprise from there. I will write about it tomorrow.
たくさんのお地蔵さんの集会のようで、面白い。 笠地蔵のおとぎ話を思い出しました。 They looked like many Jizo statues (see Note 1) at a convention. The scene reminded me of a folktale in Japan, Kasajizo. (see Note 2)

Note 1: You can see Jizo statues along country roads throughout Japan. They are guardian deities of children in Japan. They also protect travelers. Long ago, when we didn’t have transportation like cars and trains, people couldn’t visit temples. Therefore, Jizo statues were made nearby their homes. You often see them wearing red hats and bibs. It used to be believed that they would ward off evil. For more information, see this web site.
Note 2: The moral of the folktale is that pure kindness and generosity without expecting any reward will be rewarded. Kasa is translated as “Straw hat”. Here is an English version of the story at YouTube.
早朝、私たちは再びザイオンを訪れました。まだ暗かったので公園の入口近くのクリスマス用のイルミネーションが綺麗でした。 We visited Zion National Park again the following morning. We saw pretty Christmas illuminations near the park entrance because it was still so dark.
この日はザイオンの東側に行き、朝日を浴びたザイオンの写真を撮るのが目的でした。 Our purpose this day was to see the morning sunrise from the east side of Zion.
トンネルの向こうの東ザイオンの風景は渓谷内とは少し違います。 The scenery is different once you go through the tunnel because it is no longer in the valley.
渓谷ではないので、なだらかです。 Because of that, peaks and slopes are more gentle.
クロスベッドの地層がよくわかります。 We can see the cross-bed strata very well.
まだ早朝だったのでラッセル車の前後を走りました。仕方がないので東の公園入り口まで走り、見送りました。 Because it was so early, we drove pretty much together with a snowplow. So we waited a little for it to drive ahead at the east entrance so we wouldn’t block it.
少しづつ朝日が差し込んでくる予感がします。 We sensed that the morning light was gradually coming through the thick clouds.
遠くの崖の上に私のクリスマスツリーを見つけました。見えるでしょうか。いつかこの木が朝日に照らされている写真を撮りたいです。 I found my Christmas tree at the tip of the rock. Can you see it? I decided that I will take pictures of the tree illuminated by the morning light one of these days.
ところで、このツララ、何かがおかしい。重力の法則に従ってない。まっすぐ下に伸びてないんですね。どうしてでしょうか。 By the way, look at these icicles. Do you agree with me that something is wrong? It’s against the law of gravity. They were not hanging down straight. Why did such a thing happen?
そんな疑問は突然眼前に現れた景色に吹き飛ばされ、息を呑みます。 In any case, we were awed by the sight that suddenly appeared right in front of us.
ついに朝日が雲間から現れました。 The morning light had finally broken through the clouds.
景色が再び一変します。 The scenery had changed its look again dramatically.
The hills breathed again for a new day with the light.
再びトンネルを抜けて渓谷に帰ってきた時には車の量も増えて数珠繋がり状態になっていました。でも、景色の素晴らしいこと！ When we exited the tunnel on our way back to the valley, we found so many cars already lined up on the road. Ugh! But what a stunning view it was!
車を止めて、朝の渓谷の写真を撮ることにしました。 So we stopped our car and started taking pictures.
午後には用事があるので帰途を急ごうとしていた私たちですが、サイドビューミラーを見ても、素晴らしい景色が私たちを引き止めようとします。 Because we had an errand in the afternoon, we were hurriedly going out from the park. But even the reflection of the side view mirror tried to stop us leaving there because it was so gorgeous.
しばらくサイドビューミラーの景色を楽しんでいたら、セルフィーが撮れました。微かにカメラを構えている私が見えます。 I enjoyed the view through the side view mirror for a while. Later, I realized that I took a selfy shot capturing views from the side view mirror. Can you see me faintly holding my camera?
帰途、遠くに見えたビーバーダムマウンテンにも雪が積もっていました。美しい景色は見るだけで幸せ度をグンとあげてくれるんですね。 On the way back home from the road, we saw the snow covered Beaver Dam mountains. It is very true for me that my happiness gauge goes up so high when seeing beautiful views like this.
ザイオン国立公園に雪が降るとの天気予報を聞き、初雪の写真を撮りに出かけました。 We went to Zion National Park to take pictures because the weather report said it was going to snow.
近くなるにつれて雪がドンドン降ってきました。 As the park got closer, the snow got heavier.
期待した通りでした。公園に着いたら雪の世界が広がっていました。 And just like we wanted, the park changed to a snow wonderland.
とりあえずザイオンロッジに向かいました。 We went to the Zion lodge first.
深い雪雲で大きな岩壁は見えないものの、時折の雲間から見える渓谷の景色に大満足です。 We enjoyed the grand views from the lodge very much even though we couldn’t see the peaks as the thick clouds covered them.
ロッジからバージンリバーを渡り、トレイルを歩きました。 We crossed the Virgin river from the lodge, and walked on a trail.
雪に覆われるとどうしてこんなに風景が美しくなるんでしょうね。 Why is that scenery becomes so beautiful once snow covers the land?
魔法の杖が一振りされたんですね、きっと。 I guess someone had waved a magic wand.
トレイルはツルツルで、アイゼンを持ってくるのを忘れてしまったことに後悔しました。While we walked the slippery trail, we regretted that we didn’t bring our crampons.
早々に引き上げ、車に戻ってきた時には私たちにも雪が積もっていました。 So we soon gave up walking and came back to our car. When we got to the parking lot, we realized that the snow was on us as well.
牡鹿の立派な角にも雪が積もっていました。 The snow was on the buck’s gorgeous antlers as well.
いつからでしょう。氷点下になる日々が始まっていました。 Below freezing morning temperatures have started. When did the weather change?
ある日、外を見たらロードランナーのロジャーが冬を前にぷっくりしていました。 When I looked out into our backyard, I found Roger the roadrunner already puffed up before Winter.
すでに爬虫類の友達はみんな冬の住処へ引っ越して、フワフワと夢を見ながら眠っている事でしょう。 All reptile friends have moved into their winter homes. I bet they are comfortably in their cozy beds now.
ところが、なぜかタランチュラの Mr. T がまだ庭の奥の方にいるではないですか。 Only Mr. T, the tarantula was out in our backyard.
冬の家がどこだかわからなくて迷子になってるのかな？ I wonder if he couldn’t find his winter home.
毎日様子を伺っていましたが、昨日から Mr. T の姿がありません。きっと冬の住処に避難したんでしょう。 We watched him everyday for a couple weeks to see how he was doing. But since yesterday, we couldn’t find him. I think he finally found his winter home.
感謝祭も嵐のように過ぎ去っていきました。 Thanksgiving had come and gone like a storm.
そして、今日、私たちのダンスを披露する日となりました。 And finally today. It’s the day for us to perform our dance in front of people.
諸々の行事でほとんど練習できず、ダンスルーティンもようやく数日前に決まった有様です。 We were so busy for various events so that we really didn’t have time for dance practice. In fact, it was only a few days ago that our dance routine was finalized.
ウェストコースト スウィングを2.5分間、舞台の上で踊ります。 It’s a west-coast swing routine for 2.5 minutes on stage.
ここまできたら、胸を張って楽しく踊るのみ。 Well, at this point, we simply keep chin up, and enjoy dancing with music.
まるで金でできているように輝いていました。 They were shining like they were made out of gold.
パウエル湖は人気スポットなのに、この日は誰もいない。私たちだけでこの黄金郷を独占です。 Lake Powell is a popular spot, but we didn’t find anyone yesterday. We had the El Dorado (Golden land) all to ourselves.
月が見えてきました。 The moon had come up already.
夕日をどこで見ようか迷っている間に、太陽はスピードを増して沈んでいきます。 We were looking for a place where we could wait for the sunset, but couldn’t find a place. In the meantime, the sun was going down so quickly.
サイドミラーを見ると、同じ岩壁がほんの少しだけ光っています。 When I looked in the side mirror, the same rock we passed by before was shining only on the top portion of it.
もう、ここしかない！ This was it.
日が暮れてから1時間ぐらい、空の色が変わっていくのを観察しました。 For about an hour after the sunset, we observed how the sky was changing.
ピンクに染まった雲が高く登って行った月を追いかけて、ダンスをしている様でした。 The clouds, painted in pink, were dancing and chasing the moon as it went up higher.
“Toadstool” は主に有毒キノコのことです。直訳すれば Toad=カエル+Stool=腰掛け「カエルの腰掛け」となりますが、それがなぜキノコを指すのかわかりませんでした。 A toadstool is a mushroom. I didn’t know it until now. I didn’t know why Toad + Stool become a mushroom either.
語源はイギリスの中世のおとぎ話にある様です。キノコの上にカエルがよく座っていたということから、「カエルが座る腰掛け」という名前になったらしいです。 Based on my research, the origin of the name came from fairytales from 17th century England. Frogs often sit on top of mushrooms as their stool, so it was named as “toadstool”.
ユタ州にあるトッドスツールズと名付けられたこの場所は、駐車場から1.3km 歩けばつける場所です。でも、面白い場所が奥の方まで続いているので、ぐるりと回ると往復4kmぐらいになります。 The Toadstools in Utah is about a 0.8 mile hike away from the parking lot of the highway. But you can keep going to deeper sections of the park where there are even more interesting toadstools. So, it is about a 2.5 mile round trip hike.
ここは白亜紀に形成されたダコタ砂岩層でできています。それが、浸食と風化作用により、土柱となり、その上に帽子が乗っている様な姿、もしくはキノコに似ているので、”Toadstool”と名付けられたらしいです。 The geological formation of this area is the Dakota sandstone formation. It was formed during the Cretaceous period. Many years of rain and rivers carved the ground and wind eroded away the excess sands. It is like Hoodoos at Bryce Canyon national park, but the difference is these have a rock sitting on top of it like a hat. Or some people say it’s a mushroom.
“Toadstool”がキノコのことだとは知らなかったので、見るまで全く違う解釈をしていました。 Because I didn’t know that a toadstool is a mushroom, I imagined a completely different thing until I saw it.
でも、語源を知って「サルノコシカケ」と同じようだと思いました。木の幹に生えている半円形のキノコです。日本語の語源は猿が腰掛けるのに丁度いいサイズに見えるから、そう名付けられたそうです。 But now I know the origin of it, I thought it’s just like a shelf fungus that grows on the side of trees. In the Japanese language, the name “Sarunokoshikake” is “Saru = Monkey + Koshikake = Stool”, Monkey’s stool. The origin of the word was simply the shape of it and the size of it looks perfectly good for a monkey to sit. So it was named that way.
多分、1ヶ月前にサソリのスコットがいなくなりました。これはいなくなる前に蜘蛛を食べているところです。 Probably about a month ago, Scott the scorpion disappeared. The picture below is him eating a spider before he went.
こちらはカエルのフランクです。彼は地上レベルの小さな池で暮らしていました。 This is Frank the frog. He lived in a small pond at ground level.
それが、少し前ごろから、地面レベルの池から 1m ぐらい上で日向ぼっこしているフランクを発見しました。 But then, a little before Scott disappeared, we found Frank at a terrace about three feet above the ground. He looked like he was enjoying the warm sun light.
その後、彼は大胆にもスコットが住んでいる頂上の大池までジャンプして、大海を満喫している様でした。手前にスッコット、その向こうの水の中にフランクがいます。 Soon after that, Frank jumped boldly to the top level, and was enjoying the larger pool even more.
涼しい顔をしているフランクです。 This is Frank with a cool face.
フランクがスコットに食べられちゃうんじゃないかと心配していましたが、どうやらスコットは冬眠のため、噴水から降りて行った様です。残ったフランクは俄然大きな池を行ったり来たり。スコットが暮らしていた所で夜を過ごし、ついに主となりました。 I was worrying about Frank being eaten by Scott, but luckly the time came for Scott to go find a place to hibernate for the winter. So then, the water feature became Frank’s playground entirely on his own. He spent time between rocks where Scott used to live at night.
その後、私たちは忙しくてフランクの観察ができないでいました。でも、ある日、フランクが私たちを観察しているような感じで家の中をうかがっていました。 Then, we forgot about him because we became busy. But one day, I noticed that Frank was sitting close to the edge of the water feature and looking inside the house.
そこで、何ですか？と尋ねると、 So, I asked him, “what’s up?”
どうやら、記念撮影をして欲しそう。 He didn’t say a word but I understood that he wanted me to take portrait pictures.
恐竜のデイノニクスと一緒にいるところや、おすまし顔を撮ってあげました。 I took several pictures like the one being with Deinonychus, and doing a big boy pose.
その後、私たちの留守中にフランクは噴水を降りてどこかに行ってしまいました。きっと、また来てね！ We don’t know when he left the water feature, but I haven’t seen him since the last portrait. Come again next year!
裏庭の奥の方、滅多に行くことのない場所に、ローズマリーの低木が生えています。その枝の中に大きくて綺麗なクモの巣ができていました。 A very large rosemary bush grows at the very back corner of our backyard. I rarely go there. A large spider web was shining beautifully in between rosemary branches.
コガネグモの親戚グモがその中央に住んでいます。どうやら、せっせと何かしているようです。あら、口のあたりから何かが出ている。 A Banded Garden Spider is the owner of the web. When I saw her, she was busy at work doing something. Something was sticking out from around her mouth.
もっと近寄ってみると、どうやクモの糸を獲物に絡ませているようです。 I tried going closer to her, and found that she was wrapping her thread around her prey.
お腹側。いや、もしかして、獲物を食べてるのかな？ This is a ventral view. It’s also possible that she was eating it.
翌日もう一度見てみると、もう獲物は無くなっていました。 I went there again the next day, but the thing around her mouth was gone then.
巣の近辺を観察してみると、巣の下の方に糸に絡められた何かを発見しました。 I searched for the thing she was working on the day before, and found a thing wrapped by spider web at the bottom of the web.
これから食べられる獲物が入っているのか、すでに食べられてしまった残骸なのか不明です。たった一本の細い糸で巣と結ばれていました。 I have no idea what’s in it. Either her prey is still in it or it’s simply a leftover. It was connected by a thin thread to the web.
自然界は本当に面白い。不思議な事、面白いことが満載です。 Nature is full of mysterious and interesting things that I never get tired of it.
8月半ばから、サソリのスコットが噴水の上に滞在中です。気温が下がってきたのでもうさよならの時期かなと毎日観察してきました。 Since mid August, Scott the scorpion has been staying at our house fountain. Because the temperature is getting lower, everyday I’ve been thinking it’s time to say good-bye to them for the year.
でも、去る様子はなく、夜はこんなに勇ましい姿で噴水の上を活発に動いています。そして、ある日、2匹目のサソリがいることを発見しました。 But it seems it’s not the time yet. In fact, he is quite active at night like this. And one day recently, we found another scorpion on the fountain.
害虫駆除の人たちが、2mmぐらいの子供たちが生まれてくるかもしれないから要注意だと警告してくれました。 Our pest control people warned us that we may start seeing 2mm tiny babies crawling around.
日中はこんな感じ。 His daytime activity is like this.
石の下に潜り込もうとしています。 He goes under a rock.
こうして暗くなるまで動きません。どうりで25年も生きられるわけです。 And doesn’t move at all until dark. No wonder he can live 25 years.
夜になると再び活動し始めるという生活。 He comes out again at night. This is his night life.
スコットも友達も、こんな風にして越冬できるできるのでしょうか。冬眠するとしたらもっと暖かい場所、つまり、家の中を選ぶらしいです。「外にいる限り」何年もいてもらって構わないんですが、家の中まで入ってこられると「困った客人」になってしまいます。害虫駆除の人達が家をガードするためにスプレイしてくれましたが、どこまで効果があるのでしょうか。観察を続けなければ！ I have been wondering a lot if Scott and his friend can live like this throughout the winter. So this is my finding. If they hibernate, they choose warmer places like inside somebodies house!!! For me, that’s absolutely not acceptable. They can be our guests for as many years as they want as long as they are outside. If they want to come in, they will be “Go away now!” guests. The pest control people spray well to guard the inside of our house. Let’s see how well it works. I should continue to monitor them carefully.
