招かれざる客人 Unwelcome Guest

突然、こられても困ります。昨日はバンちゃんはキャンプで留守、家には私一人だったので、最悪でした。 You cannot just show up out of the blue.　Yesterday was the worst day because Ban-chan was away camping and I was home alone.

招かれざる客人の名前はカリフォルニア キングスネークです。 The uninvited guest’s name was California Kingsnake.

昨日はハウスクリーニングの人たちが来ていたので、その時に侵入したのではないかと思っています。その後、夕食を作り、テレビを見ながら夕食を食べ、そろそろベッドルームに行こうと立ち上がり、そのタイミングで目の前の床を見たら、しっかりいたんです。　The housecleaners were here yesterday and I believe that was when it came in. I then cooked dinner, watched TV while eating dinner, and got up to go to my bedroom.
At that moment, I looked at the floor in front of me and saw that it was there.

誰たって、半端なく驚き絶叫しますよね？　15分ほど叫び続けました。そうしたら、少し落ち着きました。　And who wouldn’t be startled beyond belief and scream, right?　I kept screaming for about 15 minutes. Then I calmed down a little.

バンちゃんに電話したら、玄関のドアを開ければ出ていくと言われました。この時点で、あまりの恐怖に身動きすらできませんでした。でも、勇気を振り絞ってドアをあけたら、本当に出て行ってくれました。　I called Ban-chan, and he told me to open the front door so that it would leave. At this point, I was too terrified to even move. But I gathered up all my courage and opened the door, and it really did leave.

それにしても、ラッキーでした。もしもリビングルームで見つけていなかったら、そのまま寝ていたんですよね。このヘビをそのまま家の中に残して！！！ひぇ〜〜〜！　But still, I was lucky. If I hadn’t found it in the living room, I would have gone straight to sleep. With the snake still in the house! Aahhh!!!!

6年前、家の外で出会ったカリフォルニアキングスネーク。　Six years ago, I met a California Kingsnake outside our house.

追記：カリフォルニアキングスネークはガラガラヘビやネズミを食し、毒性でもないので良いヘビだと言われています。　Note: The California Kingsnake is said to be a good snake because it eats rattlesnakes and mice, and is not venomous.

追記2：日本では蛇は神の使いで、幸運をもたらす前兆だと言われています。　PS 2: It is said in Japan that snakes are messengers of the gods and omens that bring good luck.

昨日裏庭でデザートスプーンを発見してから、静かに興奮しています。　I am quietly excited after discovering the Desert Spoon in my backyard yesterday.

裏庭で朝食なんて、長いことしていなかったのに、デザートスプーンが見たいがため、外に出てみました。　I hadn’t had breakfast in the backyard in a long time, but I went outside to see the Desert Spoon.

そうしたら、一瞬でカメラを持って出なかったことを後悔しました。さっそくハチドリがすぐそばで咲いているユッカの花の蜜を吸い始めたからです。こちら、携帯のビデオ。　Then, in an instant, I regretted not having my camera with me. A hummingbird immediately started sucking the nectar from a yucca flower blooming nearby. This is my cell phone video of it.

もう6月なので、これからは30°C (86 °F) を下回る日はあまりありません。 Since it is already June, there will not be many days below 30°C (86 °F) from now on.

裏庭で孵化した鳥達もほとんど飛び立って行きました。 Most of the birds that hatched in the backyard have flown away.

この茂みの中に残っているのは、ハトだけだと推察しています。　I am guessing that the only thing left in these bushes are pigeons.

小鳥達はこの夏の間に十分体力をつけておかなければいけません。次の冬が乗り越えられるかがその後の鳥の生死を決定します。　Small birds need to build up their strength during this summer. The ability to survive the following winter will determine whether the birds live or die in the following years.

「僕たちだって同じだよ。」と、産まれたばかりのサバクゴファーガメ君が言いました。　”We’re the same way,” said the newborn Desert tortoise.

そうですね。すべての生まれたての野生動物は一生懸命です。 That’s right. Every newborn wild animal is hard at work.

生きる活力を感じます。同時に、命の尊さを教えてくれます。 I feel the vitality of life. At the same time, it teaches us the preciousness of life.

今年の私の誕生日はもうすぐですが、すでに嬉しくて仕方がない！！！なぜなら、6年間も願っていたプレゼントがすでに歩いてやって来きてくれたからです。　My birthday is coming up soon this year and I am already so happy! Because the present I have been wishing for for 6 years has already walked over to me.

はい、アメリカドクトカゲ君のご登場です。　Yes, Mr. Gila Monster, here you are.

つい先日、あと6年間待つから、ケ・セラ・セラでいこうと気持ちの整理をしたばかりでした。　It was only a few days ago that I had just decided to wait another six years, so I was ready to say, que sera, sera.

全長20インチ (50 cm) ぐらいはあったように思います。 I think it was about 20 inches (50 cm) long.

結論から言うと、毎日の捜索の甲斐もなく、この日も再びアメリカドクトカゲに遭遇できませんでした。 As it turned out, despite our daily searches, we have not encountered the Gila monster again.

それでも、少し近づけたと思います。なぜなら、私たちと同じようにアメリカドクトカゲを一目見てみたいという人たちと情報交換をしているからです。 Still, I think we got a little bit closer. This is because we are exchanging information with people who, like us, would like to catch a glimpse of the Gila Monster.

「見つけたら叫んで教えてあげるよ」と言って去っていく人たちを見ながら、少し嬉しくなりました。名前も知らないのに、同じ目的を持つことで同志のような感覚が生まれてるんだなーと気づいたからです。 I was a little pleased as I watched them leave, saying, “I’ll holler and let you know when I find them.” It was because I realized that even though we didn’t know each other’s names, we felt like comrades in arms by having the same goal.

この日も諦めかけていた時、遠くの方で私たちに向かって手を振っている人たちに気がつきました。走って近づいてくと、アメリカドクトカゲという単語が聞こえてきました。 We were about to give up on this day’s search when we noticed people waving at us in the distance. As we ran closer, we heard the word “Gila Monster.”

重いカメラを抱えながらも全力疾走でたどり着くと、ドクトカゲはすでに穴の中に入っていく所でした。 When we arrived at the spot, me running as fast as I could with my heavy camera, the lizard was already on its way into the hole.

なんと言いますか、私たちのアメリカドクトカゲへの道は遠いです。こんなに近くで見られそうなのに遠い。 What can I say, our road to the Gila Monster is a long one even though it seems to be so close to us.

6年間も待ち続けた末のシッポとの遭遇なので、喜んでもいいんですけどね。あと6年ぐらい探し続けたら、「目と目を見つめ合うような素晴らしい出会いができる！」と思っておけばいいでしょうか。 I should be happy, though, because after six years of waiting, I’ve encountered the tail of Gila Monster, twice. So, if I continue looking for another six more years, I am sure I will have a “wonderful, eye-to-eye encounter!” Haha!

サバクゴファーガメも住処の穴倉に帰ってくつろいでいたので、私たちも引き上げることにしました。 We decided to pull out as well, as the Mojave Desert Tortoises were already relaxing back in the burrows where they live.

ブタの天国 The Heaven Of Pigs

ネバダ州のオーバートンにある、非営利団体、Windy’s Ranch & Rescue に行ってきました。　We visited Windy’s Ranch & Rescue, a non-profit organization in Overton, Nevada.

ゲートが開いた途端に、動物たちが近寄ってきました。 As soon as the gate opened, the animals approached us.

犬たちも20匹以上はいたと思いますが、それ以上に小豚たちの歓迎に戸惑いました。こんな光景、初めてでしたから。 I think there were more than 20 dogs, but I was even more bewildered by the welcome from the little pigs. I had never seen such a scene before.

ここはレスキューセンターなので、ありとあらゆる動物が保護されています。すべてが飼いきれなくなって放棄された動物です。 This is a rescue center, so all kinds of animals are sheltered here. They are animals that were abandoned because their owners could no longer keep them.

オーナーのジャニスさんにブタの数を聞いたら「最近数えてないけど、多分200頭ぐらいかな。」と、おっしゃっていました。 When I asked Janice, the owner, how many pigs she had, she said, “I haven’t counted them recently, but maybe 200.”

小さいサイズのブタから大きいものまで、様々です。 There is a large range of sizes of the pigs.

私は少し怖がって、2-3回撫でただけでしたが、ジャニスさんが降り注ぐ愛情の深さ、大きさに感動しました。 I was a little scared and only petted pigs 2-3 times, but I was impressed by the depth and magnitude of the love Janice showered down on them.

こちらは、寄付してくださった方々への感謝の掲示だと思われます。 This is supposed to be a “Thank You” posting for those who donated.

国や州からの寄付はないので、個人、寄付に頼って成り立っています。だから、いつも経営難ではないかと思われます。この日も、一人、ボランティアの方がフンの掃除をしていました。 There are no donations from the government or the state, so they rely on individuals and donations to make it work. So it always seems to be in financial difficulty. On this particular day, one volunteer was cleaning up poop.

ブタはもちろん、犬、猫の数も半端ではありません。その他、ヤギ、七面鳥、エミューなどもいました。 The number of pigs, as well as dogs and cats, is beyond measure. Other animals include goats, turkeys, and an Emu.

そして、もう1匹、忘れてはならないリクガメがいました。ケヅメリクガメというそうです。 And there was one more tortoise that I must not forget. It is an “African Spurred Tortoise.”

最初は、まさか生きているとは思えなかったほど、地面の中にいましたが、出てきてくれました。 I didn’t think it was alive at first glance because it was so far in the ground. But it came out.

甲羅の直径が1メートル近くありました。まだ90年ぐらい生きるそうです。　The shell was 3 feet (1m) in diameter. Wendy said that it still will live about 90 more years.

敷地内の木には鳥もたくさんいました。アカオノスリの夫婦が巣の上にいたので、これからの季節にそなえていたのでしょう。 There were also many birds in the trees on the property. A couple of red-tailed hawks were on their nest, probably preparing for the coming season.

ミヤマシシドも群れをなして飛び回っていました。朝夕には地面が見えなくなるほどの大群がやってきて食事を楽しんでいるとのことでした。 White-crowned Sparrows were also flying around in flocks. We were told that in the morning and evening, such a large flock comes to the site that the ground is covered by them completely. They enjoy their meals for the day there.

帰り際、孵化したばかりの10羽以上の鶏の雛をもらうため、みんなでひなの追いかけっこをしました。私たちではなく、私たちのトレーナーがご近所さんと手分けして育てるためです。 On the way home, we all chased the chicks to get more than 10 newly hatched chicks. Not for us, but for our trainer to split with her neighbors to raise them.

ほっくりと、温かい早春の1日でした。 It was a warm and relaxing early spring day.

シジュウカラ科 Paridae – Chickadee & Titmice

シジュウカラ科には隣近所でよく見かける鳥たちが分類されています。名前は知らなくてもよく見かける鳥たちですよね。　Paroidae classifies birds that are often seen in our neighborhoods. Even if you don’t know their names, you see them all the time.

そして、このシジュウカラ科が私の鳥分類表のどこに位置するかというと、こちらです。右下。 And here is where this family of Paridae is located on my bird taxonomy list. See at the bottom right.

ついに階層の奥深くまでやって来ました。字が小さくて見にくいかもしれませんね。また、分類名と使われ方もわかりにくかったので、ここで整理しておきます。　We have finally come deep into the hierarchy. It may be hard to see because the letters are so small. It was also difficult to understand the classification names and how they are used, so I’ll sort it out here.

It is not used in Linnaean taxonomy. This is the term used by Cladistics taxonomy. There seems to be some controversy about this new Cladistics taxonomy, but I won’t write about it because if I start talking about it, I won’t be able to go back to bird taxonomy. 私の意見は、分類方法を’勉強することに興味があるわけではないので、分類学でも、分岐学でもどちらでもいいです。一羽の鳥を見たら名前と特徴がわかれば十分なんですね。ただ、世界中に1万種もの鳥がいるので、私の写真も少しは整理整頓させておきたいと思っているだけです。だから、まだ見たことのない鳥、興味のない鳥、今後も見ることができない鳥はさっさと諦めて表から外しています。　My opinion is that I am not interested in ‘studying’ classification methods, so either Linnaean or Cladistics is fine. If I see one bird, it is enough for me to know its name and characteristics. I just want to keep my photos a little more organized, since there are 10,000 species of birds in the world. So, I quickly give up and remove from the table those birds that I have not yet seen, have no interest in, or probably won’t see in the future.

鳥の羽の数が何本あるか気にしたことがありますか？ Have you ever wondered how many feathers a bird has?

まさか私が鳥の羽の数についてブログに書く日が来るとは想像もできませんでした。でも、スズメ小目の分類を調べていたら、分類上、鳥の羽の数が重要であることがわかってきました。そこで、今日は羽の本数について書きます。　I never imagined that the day would come when I would be blogging about the number of feathers on a bird. But while researching the classification of the small order of sparrows, I came to realize that the number of feathers on a bird is important for classification purposes. So today I will write about the number of feathers.

鳥が飛翔するためには、風切羽（かざきりばね）を使います。そして、風切羽は初列風切（しょれつかざきり）と次列風切（じれつかざきり）に分かれています。実物の例をハヤブサ君に登場していただいて紹介しましょう。ハヤブサ君、羽を広げてみてください。 Birds use flight feathers in order to fly. They are divided into the primaries and the secondaries. Let me show you an actual example with Mr. Prairie falcon feathers. Please spread your wings, Mr. Prairie falcon.

結構わかりやすいですね。初列風切は10本あるのがわかります。次列風切は12-13本と言われています。 It is quite easy to see. The primaries appear to have 10. The secondaries are said to have 12-13.

なぜなら、このグループは9本の羽を持っているということで、Nine-primaried oscines (9本の初列風切をもつソングバード）という名前で分類されているからです。羽の数が分類名になっているんです。Because this group is classified under the name “Nine-primaried oscines (songbirds with nine primaries)”. The number of wings is the name of the taxonomy.

私の鳥の分類も佳境にさしかかりました。ただ、分類の歴史を調べれば調べるほど複雑怪奇で私の頭の中は大混乱をおこしています。なぜなら、先学者たちが試行錯誤の末に分類したものがDNA鑑定で違うグループに移ったりしつつ、まだ未解決の分野がたくさん残っているからです。　I have reached the climax of my bird classification. However, the more I look into the history of classification, the more complicated and bizarre it is, and my mind is in turmoil. This is because there are still many unresolved areas, such as the classification of birds that were made through trial and error by predecessors, and then moved to different groups based on DNA analysis.

特にスズメ小目の世界の分類は明確な違いが示されていなものが多いです。そんな中で、9本の羽しかないという理由でグループ分けしているのは、私にも理解できる明快な根拠に基づいているのでありがたいです。　There are many classifications in the world, especially in Passerida Order, that do not show clear differences. In such a situation, I am grateful that the groupings are based on the fact that they have only nine wings, which is a clear rationale that I can understand.

決断の時 At A Crossroad

ボビーはまだ生まれてから半年しか経っていない子供のボブキャットです。 Bobby is a bobcat cub who is only half a year old.

こんな日は突然くるのでしょうか。この日、彼は決心した様です。　Will such a day come suddenly? On this day, he seems to have made up his mind.

凛々しく立ち上がり、一人で生きていく時が来たことを自覚したかの様でした。　It was as if he had risen to his feet and realized that it was time for him to live alone.

この朝、お母さんの姿はなく、2匹の子供たちだけ、裏庭で無邪気に戯れあっていました。きっと、こうして狩猟の技を磨いていくのでしょう。その後、出かける準備をしなければいけないので、彼らの観察はきりあげて、2匹のことは忘れていました。This morning, there was no sign of the mother nearby, only the two cubs, playing innocently in the backyard. I am sure this is how they improve their hunting skills. After that, we had to get ready to go out, so we put our observation aside and forgot about the two of them.

でも、しばらくすると、誰かの鳴き声が聞こえ始めました。鳥かな？いえ、もしかしてボビー？1時間ぐらい泣いていた様です。RINGカメラをみてみたら、やっぱりボビーでした。 But after a while, I started to hear someone crying. Is it a bird? No, maybe Bobby? It was crying for about an hour. When I looked at the RING camera, it was Bobby.

RINGカメラにはお母さんの姿は映っていませんでした。また、2匹だと思っていたのに、たった1匹だけ。取り残されたボビーだけがいつまでも泣いている姿が映っていました。まだこんなに小さいのに! The RING camera did not show the mother. Also, I thought there were two, but there was only one. Only Bobby, who was left behind, was seen crying indefinitely. Even though he’s still so small!

自然は過酷です。 Nature is harsh.

胸が張り裂ける様な気持ちでこのビデオを作りました。 It was heartbreaking to make this video.

夜の訪問者たち Night Visitors

9月の末の夜明け前、初めてフォックスのカップルが来てくれました。 At the end of September, before dawn, a couple of Foxes came over for the first time.

多分、グレイ フォックスだと思いますが、断定できません。こちらのビデオをご覧ください。 Maybe it’s a Gray Fox, but we can’t be sure. See the video here.

そして、意外なお客様が来ていることもわかりました。（いつものことですが、画像が悪いです。） And we found out that we also had some unexpected guests. (As always, bad picture.)

秋の夜長、4本足の動物たちは忙しそうです。 On a long autumn night, the four-legged animals seem to be busy.

ボビーのお母さん Bobby’s Mom

私たちがこの地に引っ越してきたのは2021年の春でした。その年の夏、初めてボブキャットのボビーに出会いました。 その時のポスト　We moved here in the spring of 2021. We met Bobby the Bobcat for the first time that summer. Post at that time.

ボビーという名前は私がつけましたが、子供のボブキャットの総称として使っています。 I gave him the name Bobby, but I use it as a generic term for any Bobcat cub.

その後、ほとんど毎年、夏になるとボブキャット家族がやって来てくれました。今年の夏も期待通り、しかも幾度となく来てくれました。 Almost every summer since then, a Bobcat family has come to visit us. This summer, as expected, they came numerous times.

ボブキャットの子供は1年以内に母親から離れていくので、毎年違うボビーを見ていると考えるのが妥当です。そして、お母さんもきっと違うボブキャットだと勝手に想定していましたが、同じお母さんかもしれないと思うようになりました。 Bobcat cubs leave their mother within a year, so it is reasonable to assume that we see different bobcat cubs every year. And although I had assumed that the mother must be a different Bobcat, I have come to believe that it may be the same mother.

そう考える理由は二つあります。 There are two reasons to believe so.

  1. 明確な縄張りがあること。メスの縄張りは5-10マイルほどで、多くの場合、縄張りの外には出ないと言われています。 A well-defined territory: A female’s territory is about 5-10 square miles, and in most cases she will not venture outside of her territory.
  2. お母さんの左側の牙がないこと。左が4年前で右が今年の写真です。牙が同じ様に抜け落ちています。 The absence of the lower fang on the left side of the mother: The left photo is from 4 years ago and the right is from this year. The left fang is missing in the same way for both images.

以上のことから、おそらく4年前に初めて出会ったお母さんと今年見たお母さんとは同一のボブキャットだと考えてもいいと思います。 Based on the above, it is probably safe to assume that the mother we first met four years ago and the mother we saw this year are the same individual.

そう考えると、お母さんの姿が疲れているように見えました。ウサギを捕まえるのは得意なお母さんですが、2-3匹の子供の世話を毎年、もしくは2年に一度ぐらいのペースでしているとしたら、ホントに疲れちゃいますよね。 When I think about it, the mother looked tired. I know she is good at catching rabbits, but if she has to take care of 2-3 kids every year or two, she must really be tired.
