気合いを入れるため、新しくHokaのランニングシューズを履いてみました。軽くてフカフカしてます。To motivate me more, I switched shoes to a new pair of Hoka running shoes. They are light and fluffy.
結果、ちょっと早くなった。 It made the result a little faster.
トレッドミルのペースもマイルからキロに変えたので、よくわかる。5倍すれば所要時間も簡単にわかってしまう。I changed the treadmill display from mile to km, so it’s so much easier to know the 5K time. I only need to multiply the pace 5 times.
鳥の写真を撮りにザイオン国立公園の東側の地帯に一泊二日のステイケーションの予定でしたが、二泊三日になってしまったお話です。This is originally a story of our one night two days staycation east of Zion National Park for bird photography. But the trip ended up as a two nights three days trip instead.
なぜならザイオンの東の山中、泥の中に車がはまり込み、出られなくなってしまったからです。登り道は景色も良く、道も乾いていていました。でも、そこから北側に移り、ちょっとまずいよと思った時には遅かった。そこから下り坂になり雪と泥、深い溝が走っていて、道とは言えない道になってしまいました。悪夢のようにスローモッションで泥の中をスキーしている感じ。 It is because our car was completely stuck in the mud on a dirt road in the hills east of Zion. We had gone up a nice, dry ridge with beautiful views. Then we went down a north facing slope. Uh oh! There was so much mud and snow, and the road, if you could still call it that, was full of deep ruts. Going down was more like slow motion skiing in mud.
そして、安全な道まであと1kmもないぐらいのところまで来た時に、ついに深い溝にはまり、出られなくなってしまいました。泥の坂道は前にも後ろにも行く事を阻み、ついに諦めて 911 番（日本での110番）に助けを求めるしか手がないと判断しました。その後はRamsey’ Towing の救助部隊と連絡を取り合うことになりました。Finally we got to a flat area with only half a mile to go to a good dirt road. But then we got caught in a deep ravine. We could not go forward and going back up the muddy slope looked impossible. Unable to get ourselves out, we called 911 for help. They got us in touch with Ramsey’s Towing.
救助部隊は私たちがどこにいるのかわからないので、私たちが泥の山道を歩いて降りてから合流しました。そこから私たちの車まで泥道を登るはずでしたが、なんと小川が流れていていた！地図にない！それでも黄色いレッカー車は川を越えようとしましたが、川にはまってしまい、断念。この状況を考え、この日は断念して、翌日、逆ルートからアプローチすることになりました。Since they weren’t sure how to get to us, we walked the last half mile to the good dirt road to meet the rescuers. Then we all went back for our car. Unfortunately, despite the fact that their cars are so much more robust and can do anything, we needed to give up that day because a creek was running across the road. The yellow tow truck tried to cross, but it ended up stuck in the water because it was too deep.
翌日夜明け前、バンちゃんだけがレスキュー部隊と出かけ、私はホテルで待機することに しました。地面がまだ凍っている間に脱出するという計画です。Dawn on the next day, Banchan went out with the rescuers and I stayed at the hotel. Their plan was to get there and come back up the muddy slope while the ground was still frozen.
救助を求めるまで、必死になって道を作ろうとしていたので、私たちは泥だらけ。ホテルに入る前に綺麗にしても取れなかった泥。Until we gave up and called the rescue service, we tried to fill in the ditch enough to get by, but it didn’t work. That effort just made us completely muddy. We tried to make ourselves decent before going inside the hotel, but the mud on the boots didn’t come off very well.
ホテルで待機中、何もすることがなかったのでブーツの泥落としをしたら綺麗になったブーツ。While I was waiting for Banchan and his car to return, I cleaned my boots because I had nothing to do.
9時過ぎ、バンちゃんが救助された車を運転してホテルに帰ってきました。救助部隊に感謝です。After 9 o’clock, Banchan, driving our car, came back to the hotel. We are so grateful for the rescuer’s excellent work.
幸い、バンパーや車の下の一部が剥がれたりしただけで、車自体は問題なかったようです。 We were so lucky that our car was all right with just some minor damage.
車を山道に置いて山道を歩いてきた時に持ってきたものは、自分が持てるだけの本当に大切な物だけ。水、食べ物、財布、そして携帯のみ。カメラ2台、レンズ5本、スーツケースにその他諸々はやっぱり本当に大切な物じゃないということかな。 When we left our car in the mountain, we needed to choose what to bring with us. Of course, I brought down absolutely essential stuff that I could carry by myself; water, food, wallet, and cell phone. I reluctantly left my two cameras, five lenses, suitcase, toothbrush, etc. Yes, they are not my most essential stuff although they are my most precious.
帰り間際に見上げた空。カナブの町では熱気球フェスティバルが行われていました。もう2度としたくないアドベンチャーから解放された安堵のせいか、熱気球は平和のシンボルのように見えました。I looked up the sky before we left the hotel in Kanab. They had a hot-air balloon festival going on that day. The balloons looked a symbol of peace to me because I was so relieved from the extreme adventure we just had.
聞いてはいましたが、これには高度な技術と時間がかかる。レシピには所要時間が2時間と記載されていますが、4時間かかってしまいました。I’ve heard from people that cooking a batch of Cream Puffs is difficult and requires some technique to make it right. According to the recipe, it takes 2 hours, but it took 4 hours for me.
そもそも外側のシューが膨らんでくれない。何がいけなかったんでしょうね。I don’t know what went wrong but the “choux” didn’t puff.
それでも、中のカスタードクリームは美味しくできたんで、チョコレートも綺麗じゃないけど、一応努力賞を自分にあげましょう。また作りたいかというと、疑問です。On the contrary, I made the pastry cream very well. The chocolate wasn’t thin enough, so it didn’t drizzle like the recipe picture, but I think I can give myself a prize for the effort. Um, do I want to bake it again? Let me think about it.
約 4km 、1時間ちょいで終了した短い早朝ハイキングでした。手袋をしても指が凍りつきそうな寒さでした。 It was a short early morning hike that took only a little over one hour for 2.5 miles. It was so cold that my fingers could freeze even with gloves.
視界が開けると空に向かって口を開けているスコリア丘が見えました。At a viewpoint, we could see a black Cinder Cone opening its mouth towards the sky.
動物たちの足跡が凍りついた地面についていました。これはシカのヒズメでしょう。Because the ground was still frozen, we could see animal foot prints here and there. This must be deer’s hooves.
これはマウンテンライオンとか？ Could this be a mountain lion’s?
これには鋭い爪の跡もついています。This one has two sharp claws.
使いやすくなった！ It became much easier to use.
前の浴槽：入り口に蛇口があり、狭くなって浴槽に入りにくかった。また、腰掛け部分が平らではなかったので、浴槽に入りにくいどころか足の短い私には深い浴槽から出るのが怖かった。Tub Before: It was tight around the tub entrance because of the faucet. Also, around the tub were rough textured tiles and the rim of the tub sitting on top of it created an uneven surface. So it made it uncomfortable to sit on, which made me scared to go in and out of the tub.
今の浴槽：蛇口を壁に取り付けたので、俄然入り口が広がった。また、浴槽周りもスムーズになった。これで深い浴槽でも怖くない。年寄りに優しい。Tub After: The entrance to the tub became much wider because we moved the faucet to the wall. The tub surround is now smooth dolomitic marble. I can sit on it now which makes it easier for elderly people to go in and out the tub.
前のシンク：ベイスンが小さいのに蛇口が大きかった。Sink Before: The basin was so tiny but the faucet was large.
今のシンク：ベイスンを巨大にした。Sink After: We installed the biggest sink available.
シャワー室のベンチ：カウンタートップと同じ素材（花崗岩と大理石の中間の石）にしたので柔らかい感触になった。今までの物置場所が、ちゃんとしたベンチになった。Bench in the shower room: Changed the surface from tile to the same material with counter top, dolomitic marble, so the surface is soft and smooth. I can sit on it now instead of using it as a shelf.
キャビネットの高さ：左に見えているのは私のキャビネットです。右に見えるキャビネットの壁はバンちゃんのです。彼は身長が186cmもありますが、私は150cmしかありません。だから私のキャビネットの高さをバックスプラッシュ分ほど（15cmぐらい）低くしてもらいました。この違いは朝晩の私の生活を100％向上してくれました。The Height of Cabinets: The cabinet on the left in the picture below is mine, and the one the right, showing just the dolomitic marble as a waterfall, is Banchan’s. My height is only 4’11”, but Banchan is 6’1″. So, I requested the cabinet height to be about 6 inches lower than his. This change made my life 100% better everyday.
この他キャビネット内も便利な作りになってますが、以上の点に比べたら瑣末でしょう。We made more improvements inside the cabinets but they are trivial compared to the other improvements I already mentioned above. So, this is it.
ただ、この全面に広がる景色はやっぱり最高です。外の景色を中に取り込むというアイディア、まさに成功です。Just that, the view spreading out like this is fantastic. My idea, to bring in the outside view, worked so well.
始めからスピードを出しすぎたせいか、横腹が痛くなって途中、歩きました。でも、結果は44分を切ってます。On my last 5K run I broke 44 minutes, although I walked a little because I got pains below my ribs on the right side. Maybe I should not run so fast in the beginning.
まだどんな風に走ったら良いのかわかりません。I don’t know how I should run yet.
いつも5Kmの時点での結果の写真を撮る事はできないので、1分間に走れる距離で出す「ペース」を見る方が良いかもしれないと思い始めました。そこでWebサイトを見てみると、ちゃんとありました。I always miss capturing the result at the 5 km point. So I start to understand the “Average Pace” is a better way to measure my progress. So I browsed the web, and found an average pace chart.
まだビギナーレベル。初級レベルには、相当頑張らないと届かない。 I am better than average in my age group as a beginner, but far from the novice level.
去年、ザイオン国立公園でコンドルの卵が孵化しました。巣立ちしたとのことで、昨日、観察しに行ってきました。A condor egg hatched at Zion National Park last year. We went to see it yesterday because we heard that it fledged.
見えました。でも、やっぱり遠くて 800mm のレンズでも詳細はキャッチできませんでした。We could see it. But it’s way too far that I couldn’t capture much detail even with my 800mm lens.
詳細は撮れなかったけれど、羽が太陽の光を受けて鮮やかに光っているのがみられてやはりラッキーでした。Although I couldn’t get a good shot with detail of it, I still think I was lucky because I could see the wings shining with the light of the sun.
コンドルを1000ショットも撮った後は少し山歩きをして家路につきました。アイコニックとして有名なワッチマンを見る景色は、いつみてもやっぱり美しい。After 1000 shots of the condor, we hiked a little and went back home. The view from a bridge looking out to see the iconic Watchman rock is always breathtakingly beautiful.
出来上がりがレシピの写真と全然違うんですけど。「ドイツ風リンゴが沈むケーキ」と訳しておきます。German Sunken Apple Cake. The result looks far from the recipe picture.
上に載せていたリンゴは焼いている間に全部沈んでしまいました。という事は名前の通りになったという事で良いのかな。The apple pieces I placed on top of the cake butter sunk down while baking it. It means that my result really shows the name of the cake.
ふんわりとろけるリンゴが入ったケーキ、美味でした。The sunken apples are so soft and melt in your mouth. Uh-huh, yum!
朝、7時過ぎ。窓の外が大変なことになっていた。7 o’clock in the morning, I saw an unbelievable sight outside the window yesterday.
自然の不思議と美しさに感謝。I simply thanked the mysterious beauty of nature.

当然優勝を目指します。ウソ、ウソ、嘘です！ でも平均値ぐらいで終了できたら良いと思っています。 Needless to say, I aim for the first place. Just kidding!!! But I want to finish it in average time.
このチャートでは、初級で私の年齢だと44.5分 から 47 分の間にゴールすれば平均値ということになります。 According to this chart, I should finish between 44.5 minute – 47 minutes as a beginner.
前回の私の記録。残園ながら5kmの通過地点での証拠写真はないんですが、45分になってなかったんです。つまり、初めて45分を切ったことになります。トレッドミルで上り坂があまりない状態ですけど。でも、レースで走れる予感がしてきました。This is my last run. I remember that I reached 5k before the 45 minute mark. It’s the first time I broke 45 minutes!!! Although the distance climb is not much, I still did it. Now I feel like I can run the race.
ギャップの谷はロッククライミングのビギナー向けの場所として有名です。The Gap is known to be a good rock climbing practice place for beginners.
Up For Anything (何でもやっちゃう) という面白い名前のグループのメンバーになって初のハイキングでした。6.1 km (3.8 miles) We joined another new group, “Up For Anything.” It was our first hike with them. It was 3.8 miles total including walking through the rocky bottom of the gap.
チャレンジするような事は何もなかったのですが、新しい事を二つ学習しました。We didn’t find it to be challenging, but we learned two new things.
Cryptobiotic soil （クリプトバイオティック：クリプトとは隠れていること、バイオティックは生物、隠れた生物が生息する土壌のこと）
目に見えないバクテリアが土の中で一生懸命生きてます。そのため、土はこんな風にクラスト化します。だから「土が生きている」と表現する人もいます。踏んでしまえば壊れてしまいますが、それなりに硬くなっているので雨や風に流されにくくなり、風化や侵食を防いでいるんです。Bacteria live in the soil. Therefore, the soil becomes crusty like this. Some people say it is a living soil because of the presence of the bacteria. It is very easy to destroy by stepping on it. But it is somewhat hard so normal processes of erosion don’t destroy it.
水がなくても何ヶ月も何年も生き延びられるよう、死んだように活動を停止してただひたすら雨が降るのを待ち続けられる苔です。だから表面は枯れて死んでいるように見えるんですが、水を注ぐとまるで生き返ったように鮮やかな緑になります。だからそんなニックネームがついたんですね。 Moss can live many months and years without water. In order to do that, it has to save energy. In other words, it looks dead from the outside, but it is actually living as long as it contains at least 5% moisture within.
下の写真は生き返った苔です。ハイキングをし始めた頃に水をかけておいて、4時間後にみたら緑色になっていた証明写真です。The picture below is the proof of the resurrection moss. We poured a tiny bit of water on the moss that was brown at the beginning of the hike. The picture below is the same moss four hours later showing as bright green.
逞しい! Very hardy!
Warner Valley Dinosaur Track には、夥しい恐竜の足跡があり、思わず息を呑みます。ジュラ紀の初期、1.95億年前のものです。 Warner Valley Dinosaur Track is quite an impressive place with many dinosaur tracks. They are from 195 million years ago, the beginning of the Jurassic period.
残念ながら、足跡からだけでは恐竜を特定する事はきませんが、おおよその検討はつくようです。Unfortunately paleontologists can’t specify who’s footprint they are with certainty. They can only guess who made them.
人間の歴史の何百倍も時を越えるのは大好きです。 I love to jump back hundreds of times older than human history.
