アカオノスリのポートレート – Red-tailed Hawk’s Portrait shot

アカオノスリさん、悪天候の中、お疲れ様です。 – Thank you for being patient with me today in such bad weather, Red-tailed Hawk!

早速、ポーズをお願いします。 – Let’s get down to business.  Make a pose for a shot.

ど真ん中から見つめる顔も、なかなかいいですね。 – Not bad with that squared face staring right at the camera.

それでは、もう一枚、定番の凛々しいポーズ、お願いします。- Let’s try another with your old standby pose.

決まった〜！ファンクラブの方々、きっと喜びます。- You nailed it!  You’re fan club members will love it!

こんな強風の日は、カメラを構えるのも大変なんですよ。そう、あなた方も飛べないんですよね。ということは、悪天候に感謝しなければいけませんね。そのおかげでこんなに近くまであなたに近づくことができたんですから。- On a strong windy day it is hard for me to hold a camera. At the same time, birds like you can’t fly well either.  So I must thank the bad weather for being able to get closer to you, Mr. Hawk.

若鶏を見分ける – Identifying Immature Birds

春の嵐、風の強い日にワシを求めて出かけました。たどり着いた所はセイントジョージより硬度が高いので、まだ寒い。そして強風と曇り空、天候はよくありません。- On a strong windy day like a spring storm, we went out to look for eagles.  The place we went to was much higher altitude than Saint George, so it’s still very cold.  With strong wind and cloudy weather, it wasn’t a good day at all.

それでも、白い頭に黒いボディーは遠くからでも見つけられました。というか、遠すぎます。- But still, we could see Bald Eagles with white heads and black bodies from far away.  And they were very far away.

そして、ここにも。And there it is, too.

でも、みんな飛んでないんです。なぜか。- But for some reasons, none of them were flying.  Why?

彼らはエネルギー節約のために、グライドするのが好きなんです。だから、地面が温められた午後、上昇気流に乗って、あまり羽をパタパタさせることなくグライドするんですね。だから、こんな日は、頑張らない。カラスやタカたちは風に向かってパタパタしても、全然前に進んでいませんでした。成長した白頭鷲はそんなバカなことは最初からしないんですね。 – It’s because they like to glide in the air to save their energy.  To do that, they go out in the afternoon, because an ascending air current is created by the Sun heating the ground.  Ravens and some hawks were trying to fly but were mostly blown away by the wind or struggled just to stay in one place.  So adult eagles didn’t fly on such a day.

「残念だけど、もう帰ろう。今日は期待できないよ。」と私。ところが突然、ジャーン！遠くからでもちゃんと認識できる大きな鳥。こっちに向かってこようとしている。- “Let’s go home.  We can’t expect to see any eagles today,” said I.  But suddenly a large bird appeared in front of us. Although it was far away, we could recognize that it’s trying to come our way.  Here it is.

「これは、何？イヌワシ？それとも・・・」と、私。　- “What is this?  Is it a Golden eagle? or…” said I.

ばんちゃんが「白頭鷲の若鶏だよ。」- “It’s an immature Bald Eagle” said Banchan.

一気にテンションが上がります。 – Immediately, I felt invigorated with those words.

もう一羽見つけました。- We found another one.

これも白頭鷲の若鳥かな？と思っていたんですが、よくよく観察して見ると、違う。- We thought this was also an immature Bald Eagle. But after a careful observation, we concluded that, in fact, it wasn’t.

これは、イヌワシの若鳥です。やった〜！！！ついにイヌワシも撮れた！- This is an immature Golden Eagle.  Woohoo!!! Finally, I’ve gotten a Golden Eagle, too!

ところで、若鳥の見分けは難しいですよね。そこでウェブでお勉強して見るとわかりました。腕を広げた時の脇の下が白いのは白頭鷲で、そうじゃないのはイヌワシ。そして、尾の模様が違います。茶色の部分がイヌワシの方が広いです。- By the way, it’s very difficult to identify immature eagles.  So I studied up on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles.  And these are my findings.  Immature Bald Eagles have white underwing sockets when they open their wings.  But immature Golden Eagles don’t.  The tail patterns are also different.  Golden Eagles have wider brown tips than bald eagles.

最初の2枚は2-3年成長した白頭鷲の若鳥。次の2枚は1-2年成長したイヌワシの若鳥じゃないかなーと思います。- The first two pictures are 2 or 3 year immature Bald Eagles.  The following two pictures are 1 to 2 year immature Golden Eagles.  That’s my educated guess based on my study.

それにしても、こんな嵐の日に元気に飛んでいるのは若鳥だけなんて、人間も同じね。- By the way, it’s funny that only immature eagles (young) were flying even in the strong wind.  It’s kind of same with humans, isn’t it?

おまけ版。これがこの日のイヌワシのベストショットでした。力強く風に向かって飛ぶ姿、いいですよね。でも、これを最初から使うのには気が引けました。- This is an extra.  The shot below is an immature Golden Eagle flying against the wind, the best shot of the day.  But I wasn’t comfortable using it.

なぜなら、フォトショップで電線を取り除いたからです。これがオリジナル。言わなければわからない。フォトショップ、すごいね。- That’s because there were electrical lines crossing in front of it’s left wing which I removed using Photoshop.  This is the original.  I know you might never have noticed it if I didn’t say so, right?  Photoshop is indeed powerful.

白頭鷲との遭遇 – Close Encounters With a Bald Eagle

家の近くの小さな池のほとりから、ビーバーダム山脈方向を見渡します。すると、小さい黒い物体を発見。写真中央左め。 – Looking out in the direction of the Beaver Dam Mountains from a small pond near our house, Banchan found a small black object in the air.

ドローン？カラス？ – A drone?  A Raven?

いや、白頭鷲だ！ – No, it’s a Bald Eagle!

こっちに向かって飛んでくるぞ！ – It’s coming this way!

やばい、すごい接近！ – No kidding, it’s coming too close…!

私たちの背面の岩に舞い降りたと思ったら、こんな風に翼を広げて再び飛び立ちました。- It landed on a rock behind us, but took flight again by opening its wings like this.

離陸。 – Lift-off. 

両足を下ろしたままの姿って、ハンググライダーをしている人みたい。- It didn’t tuck in both legs for a while, reminded me of a hang gliding person.

急接近された時は突然のことで、カメラを向けても早くてピンボケ、しかも画像内に収まらない。大興奮の遭遇でした。- When it approached so close to us, it should have been a perfect opportunity for great shots, but most of the shots are out of focus and too large to fit within the viewfinder.  It happened suddenly and too fast, but a great moment of a close encounter with a Bald Eagle.

白頭鷲、やっぱり迫力ありますね！もう北に向かっていく時期なのでしょうか。 – The Bald Eagle is indeed quite powerful.  Could it be almost time to migrate north?

今年初のアメリカツリスガラ – The First Verdin

わっ、アメリカツリスガラがいる！枝の向こうに小さいけど見つけたよ。ほんの少しだけじっとしていてね。- Yes, I found you, Verdin, beyond many branches!  Be still just a little.

今年はついているかな。黄色い頭にオレンジ色の肩パッチ。撮れました！ – I got you!  You are so cute with the yellow head and chestnut shoulder patches.  I have a feeling that I am lucky this year.

ところで、庭の木に見つけたこの巣。下から撮った写真ですが、入り口が下の方にあります。アメリカツリスガラの巣なんですよ。- By the way, this is a Verdin nest found in our garden.  The entrance to the nest is at the side near the bottom of the nest.

わーきれい！こっち向いてくださーい。 – How pretty you are!  Please look this way.

何？僕のこと？  – Who, me?

そう、写真を撮りたいんですけど。- Yes, you.  May I take a picture?

やーだよー！ No, never~!!!

そんなこと言わずに、ちょっとだけ。- It takes only less than a minute. Please!

じゃ、ちょっとだけ。 – Well, then.

また、なんて綺麗な色。別の鳥みたい。- Wow, what a beautiful color.  You look like a completely different bird.

全然知らないの？僕たちの頭の羽は玉虫色なんだよ。だから光の加減で変わるのさ。 – You don’t know anything about us?  Our heads are covered in iridescent colored feathers.  So the color changes depending on the direction of the sunlight and how you look at us.

もうちょっと僕たちのこと勉強したほうがいいね。- You should study more about us before taking a picture of me.

なるほど。勉強します。- I see.  I will do that.

あ〜、疲れた。もう寝る。- I am tired now, I will go back to sleep.

今年初めてのアンナハチドリさん、どうもありがとう！- Thank you for the shots and a quick bird lesson.  You are the first Anna’s Hummingbird I have seen this year!

タカとワタリガラス – Hawk and Raven

美しい空の下、アカオノスリが木に止まっていました。- A red-tailed hawk was perched on a tree under a beautiful sky.

よく見かける鳥ですが、好きです。- I like them even though I see them often.

今日はついています。アメリカチョウゲンボウに出会いました。- I was so lucky today.  I could meet an American Kestrel.

かつてはタカの種類と思われていたので、別の名前がついていました。でも、立派なハヤブサの仲間です。- Once upon a time, it went by a different name and was thought to be a type of hawk.  But it’s actually in the Falcon family.

嘆きバトと同じぐらいの大きさですが、仕草から、もっと大きい鳥のように感じます。- The size is only about that of a mourning dove, but by the way it acts it makes me feel that it’s a larger bird.

さて、本題。- Now let me get into the main subject.

突然、ワタリガラスがやってきて、アカケアシノスリに喧嘩をふっかけてきました。- Suddenly, a raven came over and started attacking a Ferruginous hawk.

彼らは天敵なんでしょうか？テリトリー問題でしょうか？ – Are they natural enemies?  Or, was it a territorial issue?

アカケアシノスリよりほんの少し小さめですが、ワタリガラスはかなり攻撃的です。一時期は2羽でアカオノスリに攻撃していました。空中でも生存競争は厳しそうですね。- Ravens are a tiny bit smaller than Ferruginous hawks but quite aggressive.  I once saw two ravens team up and attack a red-tailed hawk.  It’s a tough survival competition even in the sky.

 

クエイルクリーク貯水池 – Quail Creek Reservoir

クエイルクリーク貯水池に白頭ワシがいると聞いて行ってみました。 – We’ve heard that Bald Eagles are at Quail Creek Reservoir, so we went.

なんとザイオン国立公園の岩山が見えます。 – Surprisingly, we could see the peaks of Zion National park.

そして、期待通り白頭ワシに出会うことができました。空高く飛行していたので、私の400ｍｍレンズではこれが精一杯でした。- And we could indeed see a Bald Eagle.  It was flying so high in the sky, this is my best shot with my 400mm lens.

こんにちは。- Hello!

アカオノスリもいました。- A Red-tailed hawk was also there.  

地層が作る綺麗な模様。地質学者じゃなくても嬉しくなる場所。- The rock strata create a pretty design on the hills.  You don’t need to be a geologist to enjoy the view.  

平和なひと時 – A Peaceful Moment

バレリーナの白サギ。- Egret ballerina.

ハクガンが遠くの空で大群をなして飛ぶ姿はとても不思議。近くで見ると、クチバシが不思議だ。 – A flock of Snow Geese in the sky is quite magestic from far away.  Their beaks from close up is … interesting. 

こちらはカナダガン。近寄るとガーガーと鳴く。遠くから眺めると白鳥のように優雅に見える。 – These are Canadian Geese.  They are noisy and annoying when you go close to them, but quite elegant from far away like swan.

スィー。ひたすらスィー！ – Woohoo!

Ivin 貯水池の朝は平和に過ぎていく。静かなひと時。下の写真はあまりにも幻想的なのでタイトル写真の中に入れました。 – Morning of Ivin’s reservoir passed by peacefully.  It was such a quiet moment.  The shot below came out so dreamy, so I added it to the title banner image set.

朝、Ivin という隣町の貯水池に行ってみた。 – We went to Ivin’s Reservoir one early morning.

おや？足跡がいっぱい。幾何学模様のデザインみたいで面白い。誰の仕業？ – Wow, what is this?  Who made such footprints?  It’s so interesting as if they created a geometric pattern.

やっぱり。クーツ君。君だよね？  – I thought so.  It is you who made such an artistic design, isn’t it?

アメリカツリスガラ – Verdin

10月半ばごろのショットです。- These shots are taken around mid-October.

アメリカツリスガラは、北米大陸の南の方にのみ生息する最も小さい鳥の仲間です。体長約10ｃｍ、黄色い頭に赤い肩が特徴です。小さくてじっとしていない鳥、私にとって撮影するのに難しい鳥の部類です。将来は黄色か赤い花、もしくはカクタスの中にいるところをバシリと撮りたいです。  – Verdin lives only in the southern part of North America.  The body length is only about 4 inches, one of the smallest birds in North America.  The yellow head and red shoulder patches are its characteristics.  In my opinion, it is one of the most difficult and challenging birds to take pictures of. It is in my Want To-Do list to take pictures of Verdin in a scene with yellow or red flowers, or cactus.

渡り鳥ではないので、冬用の巣を小さいけれど夏の巣よりがっしりと作るそうです。もう見かけないのですが、もう一度家の周りを観察して見ましょう。 – It’s not a migratory bird, so it builds a roosting nest for winter.  It’s smaller, thicker and more robust compared to the summer nest.  I have not located the nest so far. I should look around the house for their nest one more time.

これは・・・ – This could be…

そんなに隠れてもシッポが出てるよ。お顔見せて！ – I understand that you think you are hiding, but your tail is sticking out.  Can I see your face?

あ、出てきた。私たち、会ったことあるよね？  – Thank you for showing your face.  Have we met before?

やっぱり、そうだ。あなた、ここで生まれたミソサザイのレンちゃんでしょ？ – Yes, it is you, isn’t it?  Aren’t you the Bewick’s wren who was born here?

元気してた？もう寒くなったけど、大丈夫？ – How have you been?  Are you all right?  It’s getting cold these days.

また来てね。他の兄弟達にもよろしくね！ – Come again.  Say hi to your siblings!

続きがあります。上の写真は8月末のものです。 – The story doesn’t end yet.  The pictures above are from the end of August.

たぶん同じミソサザイが10月末にもう一度来てくれました。そのときの写真は以下です。 – The same wren, I guess, visited our backyard again at the end of October.  Here are images from then.

ところで、ラップトップと写真エディタの互換性がなくなってしまい、新しい写真の編集ができなくなってしまいました。新しいラップトップか、新しい編集ツール、どっちにしようか考えています。 – By the way, I have encountered a laptop and photo editor compatibility issue recently.  It means that I can’t edit new pictures!!!  My laptop is old, but it’s still working fine.  I’ve been thinking whether I should get a new laptop, or a new editor.
