巣箱をどうしよう？ – What Should I do With the Birdhouse

あ目上がりの夕暮れ、気持ちがいい。ＭVロックから出る雲は、まるで空をかき回しているよう。 – Below is a sunset view after rain.  It simply gave me a pleasant feeling.  A thick cloud coming out from MV Rock is like an arm swirling things around in the sky.

チトルパの木と枝にかけてある鳥の巣箱。4月11日の夕暮れでした。- This is our birdhouse hanging on a branch of the Chitalpa tree.  I took this photo on April 11th.

その翌日、木の調整をしてもらい、すっきりしたチトルパ。こちらは4月20日の撮影。たった10日の間に若葉がたくさん出てきてくれました。気持ちがいい。 – This is the same tree after being trimmed by a tree service the next day.  I took this photo on April 20th.  It’s only 10 days after the picture above was taken, but you can see so many new leaves have come out.  I can feel the energy from young leaves.

ただ、低い枝がなくなったので、高い枝から巣箱を吊るすことになりました。木を切ったり、場所替えしたりしただけでも鳥たちの反応が心配だったのに、さらに最悪の事態が起こりました。前日の強風で巣箱が落ちてしまったんです！- Because we lost the lower branches, we hung our birdhouse from higher branches.  We worried about the noise from cutting branches and the relocation of the birdhouse, but something even worse happened.  The birdhouse fell from the branch because of wind!  We had a very strong windy night, and the wind was simply way too powerful.

落ちてしまった巣箱をどうしよう。中を開けないまま、ベンチに置いてあります。もうシロハラミソサザイたちは戻ってきてくれないかもしれない。しばらくこのまま様子を見ましょうか。ごめんなさい、ミソサザイさん。- What should we do with the fallen birdhouse?  We placed it on top of a bench without opening it.  Bewick’s wrens may never come back to this birdhouse anymore.  Well, we will monitor it for a while.  I am sorry, wrens!

一等賞の虫取りサービス – Bug Catching Service Winner

裏庭のバラは鳥たちのおかげで健康そのものです。とりわけ、アメリカツリスガラの虫取りサービスは丁寧です。 – Thanks to birds, my rose bushes in the backyard are so healthy.  Verdin’s bug catching service is especially thorough.

もう葉が生い茂ってきたのでよく見えないんですが、毎日たくさんとってくれているようです。 – They come every day and catch many bugs, though I can’t see them well anymore due to densely grown leaves.

感謝です。中でも、このアクロバットアクションは、断然、一等賞をあげたい。薔薇の棘の先に、ほんのわずか右足の足指の一本をかけてバランスを取っている。 – I greatly appreciate them for their efforts.  Look at this acrobatic action.  I want to give this Verdin the first prize.  It balanced well by hooking the tip of one of its claws on its right foot onto a rose thorn.

ホワイトロック野外劇場 – Whiterocks Amphitheater

ホワイトロックはスノーキャニオン州立公園の北の方にあり、他の赤い岩とは対照的な存在です。 – Whiterocks is located at northern part of Snow Canyon State Park.  As the name indicates, its white color creates a contrast to the red rocks in the park.

私たちはその中心部にできた野外劇場と呼ばれる所にに行ってみることにしました。 – We decided to go to the Amphitheater naturally created in the Whiterocks.

駐車場から最短コースなら約 1.5 km ですが、私たちは溶岩流でできた洞窟側からの8 km ほどのコースを歩きました。 – It’s only 0.9 miles from the closest parking lot, but we took a longer way, about 5 miles through Lava Tubes Trail.  雨が降りそうで降らない、雲の変化が激しい日でした。途中で振り返ると、渓谷の景色が広がります。 – The cloud formations in the sky changed a lot from sunny to almost rain but it made our hike more interesting.  A gorgeous view spread out in front of us when I looked back.

ついつい見とれてしまいますが、いよいよホワイトロックに向かいます。- What a sight it was, but we should move on.

遠くの方で雨が降っているようです。でも、こんな風に風化された岩を見ると先に進まずに入られません。 – We could see that rain had started far away, but seeing a rock like this motivated us more to go forward.

だんだん傾斜も急になってきました。左側がナバホ砂岩層で右のボコボコしている方がカーメル層。私たちは違う2層の間を登って行きました。- The slope got steeper.  Navajo Sandstone is on the left and the Carmel Formation is on the right.  We walked through between the two formations.

ついに野外劇場に着きました。もちろん、十分にソーシャルディスタンスを取っています。音響効果がどんなものか知りたくて、つい歌ってしまいました。気持ちいい！ – Here is the Amphitheater.  We kept more than enough social distance while there.  I couldn’t resist the urge to test out the sound effects, so I started singing.  What a great feeling!

歩いてきた方を見上げると、まだ雪が残るパインバレー山脈が見えます。 – When I looked back, I could see the Pine Valley Mountains with snow on top.

下を見ると、ナバホ砂岩層。クロスベッドが水の流れによってゆっくりと形成されていった過程が想像できます。 – When I looked down, there is the Navajo Sandstone Formation.  I could imagine that the layers of cross-bedding by currents formed slowly.

遠い太古の出来事。 – It all happened at time immemorial.

今から1,000万年後にはどんなになっているのでしょうね。 – I wondered what would be happening 10 million years from now.

当然、私たちは生きていないんですが、ふぅ〜っと時空を超えた世界を想像すると世の中の雑念が消えていくようです。- Of course, we won’t be alive then, but imagining like that, going beyond the time and space, clears my worldly thoughts.

こんな表面も風化作用で砂になり、砂丘になり、もしかしたら新しいクロスベッドが形成されるかもしれない。 – The surface of the rocks like this could become a sand hill or new cross-bedding in the future.

しばらく意味のない思いに浸っていたかったんですが、遠くに見える雨雲に追い立てられて帰途につきました。 – Although I was enjoying my meaningless thoughts, the rain clouds told us to go home as they were approaching closer to us.  So we went home.

ホルトソウ？ – Gopher Plant?

ホルトソウの仲間ということでしょうか。ウィキペディアの説明では、二年草とありますが、少なくともこの地では何年も生きるらしいです。種類があるということでしょうか。 – According to Wikipedia, Gopher plant is biennial, but it seems it lives many years, at least in this area.  It’s possible that it’s a different kind of Gopher plant.

花の中心。 – The center of the flower.

これは次のステージなのでしょうか。 – Could this be the next stage?

その後、中心から茎が伸びて花が咲きます。- Then flowers come out from the center.

種ができます。 – It produces a pod of seeds from the center.

面白いことに、中心から出てきた花たちも、種を形成します。 – The interesting thing is that each flower also produces a pod of seeds.

その後、それぞれの花が、さらに二つの花を持ちます。 – Then, each flower holds two flowers.

こうしてできた三層の花。 – These are the three layers of flowers.

葉はらせん状に伸びていきます。 – The leaves grow spirally.

注意点は、有毒なので触ってはいけません。だからでしょうか。モグラよけになるらしいです。そこからGopher (モグラ）plant （植物）と名付けられているんでしょうね。- The plant is poisonous.  Even gophers don’t like it.  I assume it got its name because of this.  So don’t touch it with bare hands.

春、綺麗な黄色の花をつけるホルトソウ。菜の花に似ていますね。- It produces light green to yellow flowers in Spring.  Doesn’t it look like Mustard flowers?

巣作りは真っ盛り – Nest Making is Everywhere

「シロハラミソサザイさん、その後いかがですか？」- “How are you doing since last time, Mr. Bewick’s Wren?”

「落ち着いてきたけど、まだまだ先が長いよ。」- “It’s getting there but still a long way to go.”

「まあ、メキシコマシコさん、ポーズ決まってますね。」 – “What a Kodak moment Mr. House Finch!”

「ところで、巣作りの方進んでますか？」 – “By the Way, is your nest making going well?”

「彼、あまり手伝ってくれないのよ。」 – “He doesn’t help me so much.”

「そんなことないよ。ほら、こうして枝を集めるんだよ。」 – “That’s not true.  See?  I am gathering twigs like this.”

「アメリカツリスガラさん、もう完成しましたか？」- “Have you completed your nest already, Mr. Verdin?”

「完成と言いたいところだけど、まだ材料が少し足りないんだ。」- “I wish I could say it’s complete, but I need a little more material.”

「こちら、別のシロハラミソサザイさんですね。新居はいかがですか？」- “Oh, this is another Bewick’s Wren.  How do you like the new home?”

「まあまあね。」 – “It’s all right.”

「それは良かった。ところで、この家ですが、ほんの少し移動すること、お話ししましたっけ？」 – “That’s good to hear.  By the way, have I told you that we will move this house a little bit?”

「えっ？そんなの聞いてないよ。」- “Are you serious?  I haven’t heard anything like that.”

「後ほどおしらせします！」- “I will tell you for sure later.”

アメリカツリスガラの巣作り、その2 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 2)

青空を背に受けて、今日も元気なアメリカツリスガラ。 – Verdin is even more cheerful with blue sky today.

郵便受けの近くで見つけたアメリカツリスガラの巣。結構大きいフカフカを持ってきました。 – I found their nest near the mail box.  A verdin brought a big chunk of some fluffy thing.

体制を整えました。 – Verdin repositioned for the next move.

それっ！ –  Up you go!

今度は長い枝ですね。 – This time he brought a long twig.

上手に運べるんですね。 – Wow, I am impressed the way he can carry it.

オスだけが巣作りをすると、どこかで読んだ記憶があるんですが、やっぱり夫婦で作るんですね。 – I didn’t expect to see this because I have read somewhere that only the male Verdin makes the nest.  But that was wrong.  Both verdins participate in building the nest.

二羽で作る方が速いもんね。  – It’s so much faster needless to say.

この巣の完成は近そうです。 – It looks like the completion of the nest is near.

 

アメリカツリスガラの巣作り、その1 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 1)

鳥の観察をするようになって、気づいたこと。 – I had an epiphany since I started observing birds.

ただ生きる。それだけで尊い！ – Just live, it’s precious by itself!

目下アメリカツリスガラたちは巣作りの真っ最中。以下の写真は裏庭の木に作られつつある彼らの巣です。身の丈以上もある枝やフワフラしたものを巣に運んでいます。 – Now, Verdin are in the middle of making nests.  The pictures below are Verdins working hard, bringing twigs longer than themselves, and bringing fluffy stuff to the future nest.

でも、先週、強い風の日があったので心配していたんですよね。案の定、風でせっかく集めた枝が垂れ下がってしまいました。ここ数日、姿を見ません。諦めちゃったのかな。胸が痛みます。 – But a week ago, we had a very windy night.  I worried about the nest, and sure enough, the bundle of twigs fell apart with half hanging from the tree.  I haven’t seen the Verdin pair since then.  I wonder if they have given it up.  My heart aches.

多くの苦難を乗り越えて巣が作られて行くんですね。ここがダメならきっとどこかで彼らは巣作りをしているはず。もう少し様子を見ましょうか。 – Going through many hardships, they will, make their nest somewhere, even if it’s not here anymore.  I will observe a little longer.

イースターの贈り物 – Easter Gift

2週間ほど前、ご近所さんからユリの鉢をいただいた。キッチンカウンターの上に置いたら、周りが華やいだ。 – Our neighbor gave us a pot of Lilies two weeks ago.  The kitchen counter brightened up when I placed it on top of the kitchen counter.

一つ、二つと開花していって、もう5輪も開花した。 – One by one, the buds started opening up, and now we have five flowers blooming.  

朝のユリ、大きな顔のご挨拶は清々しい。 – It’s quite refreshing to have lilies greeting us in the morning.

ところで、今年のイースターは4月12日。それまで持ち続けてくれるかな。蕾はあと二つ。 – By the way, this year Easter Sunday is April 12th.  I started worrying about whether the blooms will last that long.  We have two more buds to go.

ムナグロムクドリモドキ – Hooded Oriole

裏庭のカモフラージュテントの中。アクションが起こらないのでiPadでゲームをし始めました。すると、何かが目の隅の方を横切ります。同時に外がやけに騒々しいことに気づきました。 – I was inside the camouflage tent in the backyard.  I was so bored with no action in the morning, so I started playing a game on my iPad.  Then, I caught something with the left edge of my eye.  At the same time, I realized that it’s so noisy outside of the tent.

慌てて見回すと、遠くの方に何か居ます。一気にアドレナリンが出て来たようで、心臓バクバクです。 – So I looked around in a hurry, and found something.  My heart started pounding faster as my adrenaline flow increased.

あれはもしかしたら・・・ムナグロムクドリモドキ？ – Could they be Hooded Orioles?

二羽のムナグロムクドリモドキがソニックスピードで向こう三軒ならぬ、六軒両隣ぐらいをビューン、ビューンと飛び回っています。風を切る音が聞こえて来るほどの迫力です。他の鳥達は邪魔にならないよう控えめです。 – Two Hooded Orioles flew around and around the space of about 10 houses with sonic speed.  It was so fast that I could almost hear the sound “zoom, zoom”.  It seems that the other birds stayed out of their way.

この春の恋愛ドラマが収まったら、きちんと撮れる機会が来るでしょうか。期待します。 – I assume it will go back to normal around here once the spring love affair is over, and I hope I have more opportunity to take pictures of them.  

カモフラージュテント – Camouflage Tent

裏庭の鳥たちは、大抵、家の中から2重ガラス窓越しに撮っています。必然、質は落ちます。 – I normally take backyard bird pictures from inside the house through double paned glass windows.  So the quality of the pictures naturally degrades.

「プロでもないし、そんなんいいジャン〜？」とも言えるのですが、ついに買ってしまいました。 – Some people may say, “You are not a professional photographer.  Don’t you care about your photo quality?”  So, we bought a camouflage tent.

中には、カメラだけではなく、椅子、テーブル、お菓子、飲み物、iPad などを入れて、長期戦に備えます。 – Preparing for a long wait, I brought in, of course, a camera, and other necessities like a chair, table, junk food, drink, ipad, etc.

1時間、2時間、期待とは裏腹に、何も起こらない。。。 – One hour, then two hours passed by but nothing had happened.  I expected to see a lot of action.  What’s wrong???

曇り空で寒い。だからかな。 – Is it because it was a cold, cloudy day?

3時間ほど粘った後、諦め掛けていたら、来た！ – I had almost given up after three hours when it came!

さすが、画質がグッとアップしてます。 – Indeed, the quality is much better.

曇りの日でもディテールまで綺麗に撮れる。ウレシい〜！ – I can see good detail in the images even on a cloudy day.  Isn’t that great?

しばらく忙しそうなミソサザイ達、そして彼らを追いかける私も忙しい。 – Bewick’s wren will be busy for a while, and I will be too, following them.

雨上がり – After the Rain

しばらく続いた雨も上がり、久しぶりに夕日を受けて裏庭から見えるレッドロックが曇り空に浮き上がった。 – This is the Red Rock view from our backyard garden at sunset.  The gorgeous light lit the rock as it emerged from the clouds after the rain.

その翌日、スカウト洞窟まで登った。 – The next day, we went up to Scout Cave.

6フィートの間隔を守っていけば、きっと大丈夫。- Make sure we stay 6 feet apart and it should be all right. The two in the middle are married, so it’s ok. 

コロナ騒動が終わるまで、今できることをしよう。- Let’s do what we can until this COVID-19 crisis is over.

花泥棒 – Flower Thief

ある日突然、花が消えちゃうのって、ショックです。 – It’s quite shocking when you wake up one day, to see that flowers disappeared suddenly.

消える前のパンジー。綺麗に花が咲き始めて、これからっていう時でした。 – These were pansies before they disappeared.  They recently started blooming and would be even prettier from then on.

でも、初めてじゃないんです。理由もわかってます。常習犯のこのうさぎのせい。 -But I know why and how, because it wasn’t the first time.  This cottontail rabbit is the habitual thief.

網で庭には入れないようにしても、隅の網をググッと押しのけて入って来ちゃう。 – Even though the gate is carefully wrapped with wire, it comes in by pushing the bottom corner of the wire.

困ったことに、網は外に曲がらないから、外には出られないんだなぁー。 – Unfortunately, the flower thief can’t go out once it comes in because the wire won’t bend outward.

バンちゃんと一緒に庭中を追いかけてようやく追い出しました。網の隅も補強して、再び挑戦です。 – Banchan and I spent a while chasing it all over the backyard. Finally we got it to successfully leave.  We have reinforced the corner of the wire.  It’s like a war between the cottontail and us.

今度はデイジー。頑張れ！ – Daisy, it’s your turn now.  Live well!
