標高1,800M Altitude 6,000ft

5ｋｍのランレースまであと12日となりました。コースは標高1,800mにあります。1,500ｍ以上は「高高度」と呼ばれ、大気中の酸素量がグッと低下するようです。つまり、肺に入る酸素の量が低くなるということです。　The 5K race is only 12 days away now. The course is at an altitude of 6,000ft. Above 4,900 ft it is considered to be “high altitude,” and the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere seems to drop dramatically. This means that the amount of oxygen entering the lungs is lower.

私たちが住んでいる街の高さは890m。コースまで車で1時間ほど走れば着いてしまう距離にあるのに、2倍以上も高い場所です。Our house is at 2,900 feet. Although the race is only an hour’s drive away, it is more than twice as high as our house.

去年走った時は標高差のことは全く意識していなかったので、なぜいつものように走れないのか理由がわかりませんでした。 When I ran last year, I wasn’t aware of the elevation gain at all, so I didn’t know why I couldn’t run as well as usual.

今年は万全を尽くすため、昨日、まだコースが発表されてないのですが、予想できるコースを走ってみました。　To be on top of everything this year, I ran the predicted course yesterday, although the course has not yet been announced.

結果、「去年の自分のタイムを超える」という目標は、多分、できます。　As a result, I think the goal of “surpassing my time from last year” can probably be done.

バンちゃんが一緒に行ってくれたので、走った後、近くのシーダーブレイクス国定公園に行きました。　Banchan went with me, and after the run we went to the nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument.

正確には行こうとしましたが、行けませんでした。　To be precise, we tried to go, but we couldn’t.

ここは標高3,000ｍを超える場所なので、まだ雪が溶けていなんですね。 Since the altitude here is over 9,900 feet, the snow has not yet melted.

そこで、ナバホ湖に車を走らせました。すると、パッとひらけた視界に息を呑みました。 So we drove to Navajo Lake. The view that opened up took my breath away.

氷がまだらに浮かむ水面と雪が眩しい。 The water surface and snow with ice floating on it is dazzling.

頑張って走った後のご褒美は、思いがけなく素晴らしいもとなりました。 The reward after a hard run was an unexpected and wonderful one.

4月の雪 Snow In April

夏用に一昨日花を植えたばかりなのに、今日、また雪でした。　It snowed again today. I had just planted flowers the day before yesterday for the summer.

移動できる花は屋根のあるところに動かしましたが、動かせないものは、仕方がありません。無事を願うのみです。 I moved the flowers that could be moved to a place under the roof. But those that could not be moved, I had no choice, I can only hope that they will be safe.

この雪ですが、ツブツブのアラレ雪、結構早く解けます。向こう10日間の天気予報は晴れか曇りで、気温は上がっていくらしい。 This snow was a mix of hail and snow. It melts quickly though. The weather forecast for the next 10 days is sunny or cloudy, and the temperature is supposed to rise.

なんとまあ、冬の締めくくりというところでしょうか。さあ、これからは快晴で行こうね！　What a way to end the winter! Now, let’s go with clear skies from now on!

確かに春 It’s Spring For Sure

昨日は快晴だったのに、今日は再び雲が空を覆い、強風が吹いていて、寒いです。 Yesterday was clear, but today the sky is once again covered with clouds, strong winds are blowing, and it is cold!

でも、すでに、確かに春です。 But, indeed, I know it’s already spring.

先週、雪がパラつく中、ハヤブサを見に出かけました。肉眼では絶対に見えないけれど、大きな声で泣いていた方角に望遠レンズを向けると、いました。かろうじてそれらしき姿を収める事ができました。遠い、遠い崖の上です。 Last week, we went to see a falcon although there were snow flurries in the air. We couldn’t see them with the naked eyes, but when I pointed my telephoto lens in the direction where they were crying loudly, there they were. I was barely able to capture what appeared to be a falcon. It was far, far away on the cliff.

このキツツキ、日本語名はわかりません。2羽、忙しく古い木を突いてました。 Two Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were busily pecking at an old tree.

こちらわお馴染み、スクラブジェイです。寒そうですね。 Here is a familiar face, a Scrub Jay. It looks cold.

でも、昨日は良い天気。リスが日向ぼっこをしに出てきました。 But yesterday was a beautifully sunny day. A squirrel came out to enjoy the sun.

こちら、スクラブジェイさんは地面をゴソゴソと掘り返して、何かを探しているようです。 Here, Mr. Scrub Jay is rummaging around in the ground, looking for something.

「すみません、何を探してるんですか？」 “Excuse me, what are you looking for?”

「もう4月だというのに何にも準備できてなくて忙しいんだ。」 “It’s April already, but I haven’t done anything yet, so I am so busy.”

「何の準備をしているの？」 “What are you getting ready for?”

「決まってるでしょ。産卵のための巣作りだよ！」 “Don’t you think it’s obvious? It’s nest material to lay our eggs!”

それを聞いて私たちも慌てて植木屋さんに駆け込んで、新しい花や木を買ってきました。鳥や蝶々や蜂たちが喜びそうなものばかりです。 Hearing this, we also rushed to the nursery, and bought new flowers and trees. I have chosen plants that birds, butterflies and bees would love.

中でも、以下の木は今年初めて試してみる直物です。ロイヤルレッド バタフライブッシュと言います。　このウェブサイトに花の写真があります。 Among them, the following tree is the first trial this year. See the pictures on this website.（https://www.monrovia.com/royal-red-butterfly-bush.html）私の背丈より高く成長するそうです。 They say it will grow taller than I am.

まだ小さくて花が咲いていないので、成長するまで前にマリーゴールドを植えて見ました。 As it’s still small and not yet flowering, I planted marigolds in front of it.

中庭の門脇に収まりました。 It fits by the gate of the courtyard.

それにしても、ブルブルブル、今日はまた寒い日に戻ってしまいました。日本で言う三寒四温のような現象なんでしょうか？ In any case, gosh! it’s so cold. It went back to a cold day today. Is this a phenomenon like the “3 days cold and 4 days warm” in Japan?

春が近いと思っていたら、寒い日が続きます。　　I thought Spring is so close, but it went back to cold winter days.

窓ガラスにまで氷が張り付いて、びっくり。でも、なんだか良い感じ。 I was shocked to see that ice was on the window glass. but it’s kind of nice.

アラレのような雪と風で、外に出られません。 We couldn’t go out because it was icy, snowy, and windy.

翌朝、外を見たらMVロックの前の丘に雪が積もっていました。 When I saw outside our bedroom the next morning, there was snow at the hill leading up to MV Rock.

わーい、球形の飾りの上にも雪が積もって、帽子をかぶっているみたい。 How cute it is to see snow on top of the sphere ornament in the backyard. It’s like it has a snow cap on it.

もう溶け始めていますが、バレルサボテンの上にも雪が残ってました。 It mostly melted away already, but a small amount of snow was still on top of the barrel cactus.

こんな天候なのでピックルボールの練習も中止となっています。こういう時はフィットネスセンターに行けば良いのですが、なぜかゲームにハマっています。 Because of this weather, our pickleball practice was cancelled. I could go to our fitness center, but for some reason, I am quite addicted to a video game now and stay inside all day.

明日はハイキングの予定です。明日天気になーれ！ We have a hike scheduled tomorrow. Let’s hope it will be a nice day tomorrow!

動く石 Moving Rocks

石が動いてもいい。 It’s OK for a rock to move.

石が競争してもいい。 It’s OK for rocks to race.

ここはデスバレー国立公園内のレーストラックプラヤです。（プラヤとは一時的に水が溜まる広い平野のこと） This is Racetrack playa in Death Valley National Park.

たどり着くまで大変な労力がかかるので、あまり観光客は訪れません。私たちが訪れたのは4月でしたがすでに猛暑で、平野内は、石と、バンちゃんと私だけでした。 It’s rare to see many people there because it takes a long time and a lot of effort to get there. It was April when we visited, but it was already very hot. And there were only Banchan, myself, and the rocks at the playa.

去年から続いているハードディスク内の写真の整理は、まだ続いています。 I started organizing Hard Disks, mainly the pictures in them, from the end of last year, and I am still working on it.

目下2012年を整理しているところですが、忘れ去られていた石の写真を見つけたので、ご紹介します。 I am reviewing pictures from 2012 now, and found the forgotten rock pictures.

当然ですが、石は自分の意思では動きませんが、それでも動く。長い間の謎でしたが、最近、研究者の努力の結果、原因が解明されました。 No doubt that rocks won’t move by their own will, but they still move. It was one puzzle we haven’t solved for a long time, but it was recently solved by a researcher.

リーズ フェリー Lee’s Ferry

ナバホ橋を過ぎると、すぐ、リーズフェリーへの道があります。 Once you cross the Navajo bridge, you will find a sign pointing to Lee’s Ferry road on the right.

ジョン ドイル リーさんが始めたコロラド川を渡る唯一のフェリーサービスがあった場所なので、リーさんの名前がついてる場所です。19世紀半ばから20世紀初めまで賑わっていたようです。 It was the one and only ferry boat ride service station to cross the Colorado river once upon a time and operated from the mid 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It’s called “Lee’s Ferry” because Mr. John Doyle Lee started it.

今では、シーズン中に川下りをしたり、魚釣りをしたりする観光客で賑わっているようです。私たちはシーズンオフに訪れたので、人はせいぜい2-3人歩いていたくらいで、静かでした。Now, it’s a popular place as a starting point for rafting and fishing on the Colorado river. It was off-season when we visited there, so we saw only 2-3 other people. It was very quiet.

川の水がとても綺麗なのに驚きます。 We were amazed at how clean and transparent the water was.

そして、とにかく美しい。 And it was so pretty.

私たちは川縁を往復3kmほど歩きました。時間があったらもっと、もっと歩いていたい場所でした。 We hiked 2 miles round trip along a trail by the river. But I can assure you that you want to keep walking, or sit somewhere to gaze at the river for a long, long time.

生憎、雨がポツリポツリと降ってきていました。 Unfortunately, rain drops started falling.

駐車場に戻ってきた時のことです。そんなに遠くない場所から、鳥の鳴き声が聞こえてきました。しかも、私がずーっと撮りたかった鳥の鳴き声です。その名をムナジロミソサザイと言います。 Then, it happened. I heard a bird was calling. and it was not just any bird, but the bird I always wanted to capture in my camera for a long time yet hadn’t succeeded. It was a Canyon Wren.

帰りの雪道を心配しているバンちゃんに「10分だけ待って！」と頼んで、鳴き声を頼りに追いかけました。 Banchan was anxious to drive out of there quickly because it should be snowing on the road ahead of us at the high elevations. I told him, “give me 10 minutes!” and started chasing the calling sound.

10ｇぐらいしかない小さな鳥で、すばしっこい。しかも曇り空。 苦戦しました。Canyon Wrens are so tiny, only weighing about 0.5 oz, and agile. Thick clouds covered the sky. It was very difficult to get a good picture.

でも、なんとか撮れました。初めてカメラに収められて大満足です。 But in the end, I could capture three decent shots, for the first time, of this bird. I am happy with them, for now.

ホクホクと温かい気持ちで寒い雪の降る道を走り、家に帰りました。 The Canyon Wren made my heart so warm, and we drove through the cold snowy road back home.

ホースシューベンド Horseshoe Bend

ペイジから少し南下した所に、コロラド川の馬蹄形をした場所が見下ろせる展望所があります。 The viewpoint of the Colorado river’s Horseshoe Bend was about 5 minutes south of Page.

24mmレンズで撮りました。16mmがあったらもっと余裕を持って撮れたことでしょう。 I used a 24mm lens. If I had 16mm, it would be a little easier to capture it.

流石に有名な観光スポットなので、寒い中でも10-20人ぐらいの観光客がきていました。全員がいなくなったと思ったら、なんと、T-レックスが写真家の指示に従って、ポーズをとっていました。 It’s a well known tourist spot. Even though it was a cold day, I saw 10-20 people walking on the path to the viewpoint. I wanted to take pictures after all the people left, so I waited a little. Then I found a T-Rex posing at the edge of a rock following a photographer’s request.

もちろん、着ぐるみを着ているだけですが、面白い発想です。 Of course, it was only a person wearing a T-Rex suit. But I thought the idea was interesting.

バンちゃんも色々な角度から撮っていました。 Banchan was also taking pictures from many different angles.

私は、高所は苦手なので、崖の淵に寝そべって撮りました。（写真はばんちゃん提供） I did, too, but lying down on the ground at the edge of the cliff because I am afraid of the height. (Below photo was taken by Banchan.)

小雨が降る曇り日でしたが、朝日が雲間から顔を出し、岩壁の上部に光を刺してきました。川面に反射して、綺麗でした。 It was a cloudy day with light sprinkles, but the morning light came down through the tiny break of the clouds, and lit the top of the rocks. It reflected very well on the surface of the water.

ところで、私たちは、10年前、キャニオンランド国立公園のホワイトリム巡りをしました。ここはコロラド川とグリーン川が南端で合流する場所です。7月の暑さが厳しい時、4日間かけてオフロードの道を走りました。グリーン川サイドにある馬蹄形のある場所に歩いていきましたが、そんな季節に訪れるの狂気の沙汰なので、当然、私たち以外、誰もいませんでした。 By the way, we visited White-rim road in Canyonlands national park 10 years ago. The south end was the place where the Colorado river and the Green river meet. We spent 4 days off-road to go around the White rim. It was mid July, the ridiculously hot season, but we walked to the edge of Green river’s horseshoe bend. We were the only people crazy enough to be there and didn’t see anyone else, needless to say.

こちらは16mmレンズでも収まりきらない程大きなものでした。 I used a 16mm lens for the picture below, but still couldn’t completely capture it.

パウエル湖 Lake Powell

ペイジという町はアンテロープキャニオンがある所として有名です。私たちも10年前に訪れています。 The small town of Page is well known because of Antelope Canyon. We visited there 10 years ago.

遠くにナバホ山が見えます。 You can see Navajo mountain in the background.

手前はパウエル湖のはずですが、細い線のような川しか見えません。 Lake Powell is supposed to be there but we could see it only as a thin line.

以下の写真は10年前、7月に訪れた時のショットです。ナバホ山が右に見えるので、角度は違いますが、ほぼ同じ場所から撮りました。水位の違いはかなり驚きです。 I took the picture below 10 years ago. You can see the Navajo mountain on the right side, so it should be about the same location. That’s rather shocking to see how different it is.

10年前には湖の中にポツリとあったローン ロックの周りにも、水が全くありませんでした。 The Lone Rock was in the water 10 years ago, but it’s standing on the ground now. No water was around it.

気を取り直し、水のある場所を探し求めていたらちょうど日没の時間がきていました。赤い低木がサンゴのように見えないこともないです。かつては、この辺りも水中だったはずですから。 We set aside our disappointment, and looked for a place where we can capture water. It was already about the time of sunset. I thought some foreground items looked like they were under water. Of course they weren’t, but the red bush looks like coral. The entire area was indeed under water not so long ago.

貝殻も干上がって、そこかしこに発見できました。 We could find dried up shells here and there as well.

サグワロ Saguaro

日本語名にするとサグワロと発音されていますが、英語の発音は「ソワロ」に近いです。 “Saguaro” is pronounced as either [sə-gwär′ō], or [sa-wär′ō].

アリゾナ州の南部、ソノラ砂漠地帯では高速道路沿いでもサグワロというカクタスがボコボコと生息しています。 At the southern part of Arizona, the Sonoran desert, we can see Saguaro cactus everywhere even at the side of the highway.

サグワロはソノラ砂漠地帯でしか生息しません。隣のモハビ砂漠ではやはりサボテンのジャシュアツリーが生息しているんですが、両者は共存することはなく、生息地がクッキリと分かれています。きっと環境に深く関連しているのでしょう。ちなみに、私たちの住んでいるユタ州、セイントジョージではどちらも生息していません。 Saguaro live only in the Sonoran desert. Joshua trees live in the Mojave desert right next to the Sonoran desert. They are so close to each other but they don’t co-exist in either area. I assume it’s environmental related reasons separating them. Incidentally we have neither plants in my town, St. George, UT although it touches the northern tip of the Mojave desert.

でも、走行中にほんの小さな範囲で両方が恒存している場所を見つけましたが、残念なことに証拠写真を撮りそびれました。今度また行く機会があったら絶対に証拠写真を撮ります。 But, it was very interesting that we saw both Saguaro and Joshua tree living together for only a short distance while we were driving on the highway. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to take a picture to prove it.

サグワラは成長後50年経ってから、初めて花を咲かせ、その後、1年に一度の開花を繰り返し、200年ぐらい生きるそうです。カクタスなので木ではありませんが、周りに木がないので、遠くから見ると木がボコボコ生えているように見えないこともないです。ちなみに、高さは12メートル以上にも達するそうです。 Saguaro cactus live about 200 years, but they don’t bloom until after the first 50 years of their lives. At that point, they bloom once a year every year. Although its height can be 40 feet, but it’s not a tree. No trees can live that tall around there, Saguaro looks like a tree from far away.

数種類の鳥が穴を開けて住み着いています。 You will see holes in some of them, and birds are the ones to be blamed for it. They make a hole and actually live in there.

先週末から4日間、アリゾナ州フィネックスの南部に行ってきました。そこで見かけた光景でした。 This is what we saw during our trip south to Phoenix, Arizona over the past 4 days.

滝 Waterfall

先週、雨の中、近くの崖にできた滝を見にいきました。 We went to see waterfalls at nearby red rocks.

砂漠地帯に雨が降ると、降水量は半端ではありません。だから普段は何もないのに滝ができるんです。 The volume of the water becomes more than you can imagine once we get rain in the desert. So we can see the instant waterfalls pop-up where normally we see nothing.

遠くからでもゴーッという水の流れが聞こえていました。 I could hear the sound of water falling from far away.

ところで、ウェブ上のファイル整理がひと段落したので、私のコンピュータのHD (ハードディスク）の整理をし始めました。外付けHD6個も一緒に整理するのが一番なので、それぞれを点検していったら、量の多さに眩暈がしてきました。 Changing the subject, I have started organizing my computer’s HD (Hard Disk). I have gone through 6 external HDs as well to make the process efficient. But I felt lightheaded due to the volume of data.

6年間溜め込んだデータです。整理整頓できるまで、多分、最低2-3ヶ月はかかる見積もりです。最終的には一番古い外付けHDを処分したいです。でも、もっと期待するのは、身も心も軽くなる事だと思います。 I estimate 2-3 months to complete the cleanup for all data I’ve accumulated in the past 6 years. My goal is to eliminate the oldest HD at the end. However, I think the process of doing this is more than that. It will make me feel much lighter and free, both physically and mentally.

Hike 1: MV Rock

今朝、去年から降り続いていた雨が止んで、MVロックに光が差していました。 A ray of light was illuminating MV rock this morning after the recent rains.

昼過ぎには雨雲も見えなくなったので、久しぶりにMVロックまで行くことにしました。 We hiked up to MV rock for the first time in a long time since the rain clouds went far away in the afternoon.

往復、7.25kmのハイクとなりました。 It was a 4.5 mile loop hike.

MVロックの裾野には、ドラゴンと、巨大なターバンを被ったカタツムリが生息しています。 A dragon and a gigantic snail wearing a turban live there at the bottom of MV rock.

雨上がりのすぐ後だったので、苔や地衣類が嬉しそうでした。 The moss and lichen looked so happy because it was right after the rain.

今年、初めてのハイクでした。今年は50回のハイクにチャレンジしたいです。 It was the first hike for the year. I want to challenge 50 hikes this year.

初ショット 1st Shot

ビーバーダム山脈に再び雪が積もりました。大晦日から降り続いていた雨は、山の上では雪になっていたんですね。 The Beaver Dam mountains are covered by snow again. We had rain continuously since new year’s eve here but the rain changed to snow above a certain elevation.

近くのレッドロックの上にも雪がうっすらとかぶっています。こんな景色を目撃したのは、引っ越してきたから2回目です。 The red rock nearby our house also has snow at the top. This is my second time to see such a scene since we moved out here.

買い物に行く前の景色でしたが、帰ってきた時は濃い霧に包まれてしまい、何も見えなくなっていました。 It was visible before I went out for grocery shopping, but I could see nothing when I came back home because they were covered by thick clouds again.

これをラッキーと取るか、残念と取るか、意見が分かれるかもしれません。でも、私は断然ラッキーです。 Some people may say I was lucky to see it, but some may say it was unlucky because I can’t see it any more. But I say I was definitely lucky.

今年もたくさんの選択があって、色々な結果があって、多くの葛藤があるはずです。でも、私はいつもラッキーです。そんな今年を作っていきます。 I will have many choices, results, and conflicts this year as well. But I will be always lucky. I will make it such a year this year.
