朝、Ivin という隣町の貯水池に行ってみた。 – We went to Ivin’s Reservoir one early morning.
おや？足跡がいっぱい。幾何学模様のデザインみたいで面白い。誰の仕業？ – Wow, what is this? Who made such footprints? It’s so interesting as if they created a geometric pattern.
やっぱり。クーツ君。君だよね？ – I thought so. It is you who made such an artistic design, isn’t it?
私たちの MV Rock が煙っていた。- Our MV Rock was misty.
レッドロックが雲に隠れてる。こんな景色はこの地に引っ越して来てから初めてだ。- Red Rock mountain is covered by clouds. It’s my first time to see such a sight since I’ve moved to this place.
昨夜から雨が降り続いている。庭に植えたかったカクタス達は来年の春までポットの中にいたほうがいいらしい。雨が止んだら零下の温度になるからだ。夜になったらガレージの中に移動できるようにワゴンに移動した。すでに植えてあるカクタスはバーラップ布で覆って寒さをしのぐことになるらしい。- It’s been raining since last night. It seems that my cactus plants need to stay in pots until next spring. It is because the temperature will drop down to freezing temperature at night. I put them in a wagon so that I can pull them inside the garage at night. For those cactus already in the ground will be covered by burlap cloth.

そんな雨の中でも、いつもの裏庭警備隊長のミスターＱはスクッと立っている。雨の中でも、寒くても、塀の上からみんなの安全を見守っている。- Even on such rainy days, our friend Mr. Q, the chief of backyard security, is proudly standing there. Rain or shine, cold or hot, he watches over everyone’s safety from the top of the fence.

アメリカツリスガラは、北米大陸の南の方にのみ生息する最も小さい鳥の仲間です。体長約10ｃｍ、黄色い頭に赤い肩が特徴です。小さくてじっとしていない鳥、私にとって撮影するのに難しい鳥の部類です。将来は黄色か赤い花、もしくはカクタスの中にいるところをバシリと撮りたいです。 – Verdin lives only in the southern part of North America. The body length is only about 4 inches, one of the smallest birds in North America. The yellow head and red shoulder patches are its characteristics. In my opinion, it is one of the most difficult and challenging birds to take pictures of. It is in my Want To-Do list to take pictures of Verdin in a scene with yellow or red flowers, or cactus.
渡り鳥ではないので、冬用の巣を小さいけれど夏の巣よりがっしりと作るそうです。もう見かけないのですが、もう一度家の周りを観察して見ましょう。 – It’s not a migratory bird, so it builds a roosting nest for winter. It’s smaller, thicker and more robust compared to the summer nest. I have not located the nest so far. I should look around the house for their nest one more time.

ところで、ラップトップと写真エディタの互換性がなくなってしまい、新しい写真の編集ができなくなってしまいました。新しいラップトップか、新しい編集ツール、どっちにしようか考えています。 – By the way, I have encountered a laptop and photo editor compatibility issue recently. カリフォルニアから友人が訪ねてきてくれたので、ザイオン国立公園に行ってきました。 – We went to Zion National Park again because our friends visited us from California.
勿論、1K (コンドルの名前) がハイライトでした。(コンドルの赤ちゃんのブログ参照）遠くから見るだけなのでわからないはずなのに、仕草でしょうか。成長したなと感じました。前回見たときの岩には停まっていないし、もう大きな子供という感じ。 – Of course, we went to see 1K the Condor. (see my blog about Condor baby) as a highlight. We can see it only from far away, so we can’t see great detail, but we still could recognize that it has grown up to be a juvenile by the way it acts. It (we still don’t know the sex yet) wasn’t perched on the rock where we saw it last time anymore.
こんな風に飛べたりするし。- It can fly like this already.
コンドルは食べ物を求めて1日に200km以上も飛んで行けるそうです。青年になって自分で餌を探すようになったら、もう、ここでは見られなくなるのかと思うと寂しいです。- A Condor can fly more than 100 miles a day in search of carrion. When it becomes a young adult and is able to search for food by itself, we most likely won’t see it here anymore. I’ll miss you, 1K.
1K、もう一度会えるかな？ – Can I see you again…?
ところで、何か言っていますが遠すぎて聞こえません。 – By the way, it is saying something, but can’t hear it as we are so far away.
そうか、自己主張の強い時期になってきたんですね。- I see. It has reached the age where self-assertiveness appears.
カリフォルニア コンドルの赤ちゃんが5月に生まれました。（英語版ですが、そのニュース）– California Condor’s baby hatched in May this year.
そんな大ニュースを知らずに訪れたザイオン国立公園だったので、準備不足でした。でも、十分感動して帰ってきました。- We visited Zion National Park without knowing such big news. Although we didn’t prepare well for the condor viewing, I must say we were so lucky to see them for the first time, and we enjoyed it fully.
昨日書きましたが、ザイオン公園内はバス移動です。最初は風景を撮るために24 – 70 mmのレンズを持ってバスに乗りました。でも、コンドルを見てしまったら、どう考えてもレンズ交換せずに入られません。そこで、1時間半かけて車に戻り、再びコンドルの場所、エンジェルスランディングのまで戻りました。ビッグベンドの停留所がビューポイントになります。(下の地図参照）そこから約 0.5 KM ぐらいの場所に赤ちゃんがいます。- As I wrote about it yesterday, you need to use a shuttle bus to go places inside the park. I hopped on the shuttle carrying only 24-70-mm lens originally. But we needed to go back to our car, spending 1.5 hours round trip, using other shuttles to get the 400mm lens once we saw the condor baby. (See the map below.) The baby is standing on a rock against the wall below Angel’s Landing trail. From Big Bend viewpoint to the baby is about 1500 feet.
これがビューポイントからの眺め。巣は高い所に作られたんですが、あまりにも早く巣立ちしすぎて、巣に戻れなくなってしまい、今の場所、巣から多分 0.25km ぐらい下の岩の上に住むようになったとレンジャーが話してくれました。- This is a view from the viewpoint. The nest was made at much higher place, but the chick couldn’t get back to the nest after it fledged. A ranger told us that it was too soon for the baby to take off. So, baby is standing about 500 feet below on a rock since then.
赤ちゃんの名前は 1Ｋ。なぜなら、 California Condor Recovery Program が1992年にスタートしてから 1000番目の赤ちゃんだからです。まだお母さんとお父さんに教えてもらわなければいけないことがたくさんあるそうです。飛び方も、餌の探し方も、巣の作り方も、みんな大切なことです。- Baby’s name is “1K”. It’s because it’s the 1000th baby successfully hatched since California Condor Recovery Program started in 1992. The chick still needs to learn so many things like how to fly, find food, make a nest, etc.
向こう、数ヶ月から一年ぐらいは確実に餌を運んで来てもらうので、この場所に行けばかなり高い確率でコンドルの赤ちゃんが見られます。- The parents will bring food back to 1K for the next few months or even up to one year. Therefore, the chance to see the chick is very high in the next few month.
私たちは日が暮れて太陽の光が隠れるまで観察していました。- We stayed there observing the baby until the sun moved behind the cliff.
こんな所に一人、これからも寒い冬を過ごすのかなぁと思うと、とても心配になります。- The baby will be alone in such a place throughout upcoming winter. I really hope he can survive all right.
ちょうどその時 Raven というカラスの大きいのが飛んで来ました。それを見たお母さんはカラスを追い出しにいきました。遠くから見ていても迫力のあるドラマでした。また、サイズの差がこんなにあるのねと、改めてコンドルの大きさを確認しました。- Then, suddenly a raven flew over. Condor Mom immediately started chasing it at full speed. It was like a National Geographic nature drama in front of us. As you can see it on the picture, Condor is so big.
ちなみに、全てのコンドルの羽には番号タグがつけられていて、モニターできるようになっているとのことです。このお母さんの羽には”9”の数字が見えます。409番目のコンドルなんですね。- By the way, all condors have numbering tags. The conservation program can monitor each bird in this way. We can see number “9” on her wing. It means she is 409th condor.
1億5000万年間に堆積した地層をバックグラウンドに、この追跡ドラマはあまりにも雄大すぎる！- What a sight, it is too magnificent! We totally enjoyed the drama in front of 150 million years of strata on the cliff face. 
そして、面白いことにコンドルがこんなに近くにいるのに気がつかない人もいる。左、カメラを持った人間。右、人間を見つめるコンドル。- On the other hand, it’s funny that some people don’t know how close a condor is to them. On the left, a human with a camera on Angel’s Landing trail. On the right, a condor looking at the human.
このエンジェルスランディングの絶壁にはクライマーもいます。赤ちゃんの右の方の壁を登っていたクライマーたち。- The wall of Angel’s landing is one of the attractions at Zion for climbers.
この方は、どうやら女性のようですよ。まだ先が長いですが、頂上までたどり着けたでしょうか。- It looks like this is a woman climber. I hope she made it to the top. It looks like it is still a long way to go..
コンドルの赤ちゃんは身長1.2m、翼を広げると 3m ぐらいだそうです。強く逞ましく成長していってね！- The baby’s height is about 4 feet and the wingspan is 9 feet. Please be stronger and live long!
1000mmのレンズ、欲しいな!!! – I want a 1000mm lens!!!
いつの間にか気温が下がり、最低気温が摂氏0度に近くなっていました。昨日の朝、裏庭に見慣れない鳥が来ていました。モッキングバードかな？でも、やせ衰えています。「冬に向けてもっと元気になっていないと越冬できないよ。」と心配します。 – It’s been near freezing temperatures recently without us even noticing the weather changed. I saw a new bird that I haven’t seen throughout the summer in my backyard yesterday morning. Could it be a mockingbird? But it looks awfully thin and beaten up. “You better eat more and be healthier before winter comes. Otherwise, you cannot see the next spring.”
それはさておき、うかうかして入られません。秋を見逃す前に秋探しに出かけなければ！ – In any case, I can’t be zoned out so long. We better be hurry up and go out to look for “Fall” before we miss the fall season completely.
向かった先はCedarbreak 国定公園。大好きなアスペンの秋は明日書きます。今日は、氷点下の中で見つけたブルーバードです。 – The driving destination was Cedar Break National Monument. I will write about my favorite Aspen tree tomorrow, but for today, I want to show you a Bluebird we saw in the freezing temperature yesterday.

失礼しました。まさかの出会い。カメラの準備ができていなかったので、こんなのばっかり。 – Sorry! but most of my shots are like this because it was such a surprise and I wasn’t ready for it.
指が凍りつく中、ようやく撮れた数枚です。 – I could manage to take a few pictures, though my fingers were numb.
確かに、青い。成長したオスのマウンテンブルーバードは初めてです。 – It is blue, indeed. This is my first time to take a picture of a grown male Mountain Bluebird.
こんなに寒い高所に住んでいるんですね。日本語ではムジルリツグミと言うらしいですが、メーテルリンクの「青い鳥」で有名ですよね。 – It lives in cold and high altitude like in Cedar Breaks. It became known as the “Bluebird of Happiness” since “The Blue Bird“, written by Maurice Maeterlinck, was published.
これで、きっと早くバンちゃんの背中や足が治りそうだよ! – I have a feeling that Banchan’s back and foot pain will go away soon since we have seen such a pretty bluebird!
野良仕事のやりすぎで、両手が腱鞘炎になってしまいました。だからドクターストップ。手を使わないこと。料理も、タイプも、できない。カメラなんて冗談じゃなく持てません。 – Unfortunately, I have gotten tendonitis on the fingers of both hands due to working in my garden so much. So my doctor ordered me not to use my hands for a while, including cooking, typing, etc. Of course, holding camera is also not allowed.

Western Kingbird ニシタイランチョウ です。裏庭の木の上で見つけました。 – They are Western Kingbirds. We found them on a tree in the backyard.
おや？すごい勢いで鳴き始めました。 – What happened? They started chirping so loudly.
あー、やっぱり。お母さんが食べ物を捕まえて来てくれたんですね。 – I see… Their mother brought back food for them.
おっとっと。落ちないように気をつけて。 – Wow, be careful not to fall down.
やった〜。ランチタイムね。今日のメニューは何かな？ – Yeah! It’s lunchtime. What’s the menu for today?
大きなトンボみたいだね。 – It looks like a gigantic dragonfly.
美味しそう。 – Yummy! 
あれ？もう一羽の子にはないの？ – Wait a minute. What about the other one? 
後でもらえるのかなぁ？もらった方の子はもう、食事の後のお昼寝タイムに入ったというのに。 – Can it get a bug later? The other one got food already and now is napping.
ちょっとかわいそう。「お腹すいたよ〜！」と鳴いているのでしょうか。お母さんもお昼寝タイムに入っちゃったのかな？ – Oh, it isn’t fair. It is crying saying “Hungry… give me a bug…” Hmm, their mother also started napping.
そこで逞しいニシタイランチョウの赤ちゃん。「よいしょっと。」高い枝に飛び乗りました。高い所に行けばきっとお父さんが来てくれる、と思ったのかもしれません。 – That’s it then. The baby who didn’t get food hopped onto a higher branch. He might have thought that his dad will bring something for him if he went higher.
さあ、その後、どうなったんでしょうね。きっと無事に成長して、自分でハエを捕まえていることでしょう。 – I wonder what happened to him. We didn’t witness the end of the story, but I am sure he is fine. He may be a nice young bird who can catch bugs all by himself by now.
ドキドキハラハラの数日間でした。 – It was such a drama keeping me on my toes the past few days.
この子が裏庭で最後に目撃できた赤ちゃんです。 – This is the last chick I found in our backyard.
他の赤ちゃんたちはもう見えなくなっていました。でも、お母さんは餌を運んできては低木の中に入っていきます。 – The other chicks aren’t there anymore. But the mother Wren repeats carrying their food and flying into a bush near the bird house.
みんな無事ですか？と聞いてももちろん答えてくれません。 – “Are they all right?” I asked, but of course, she didn’t answer.
でも、この低木の中から鳴き声が聞こえているところを見ると、後の2羽はその辺にいるらしいです。– But I hear the two older chicks’ chirping noises from this bush, so they must be in there.
でも、この子はどうしたらいいんでしょう。鳴きながら一生懸命羽を広げて塀の壁をよじ登ろうとするんですが、うまくいきません。 – And this little one, what can we do? It tried so hard to go up the fence by stretching its wings but couldn’t make it off the ground. It simply keeps chirping.
お母さんの声が聞こえる方に向かって必死に何回も何回も挑戦してます。 – The challenge was going up on top of the fence where it’s mother’s voice kept calling from. Every attempt was as if it was the last chance.
塀は高すぎます。このままでは死んでしまうかもしれないので、助けてあげようかバンちゃんと何回も相談しました。 – The fence was too high for it. Banchan and I discussed many times if we should attempt to help it or not because it might die if the attempt didn’t work.
ただ、一つだけ希望があったのは、お母さんたちはまだ近くにいるということ。お父さんは木の上から信号を送り続けています。 – The only hope we had was that the parents were still there. The mother was on top of the fence, and father was on a branch of a tree nearby and they both kept calling for their chick.
その後、本当に突然でした。赤ちゃんはベンチの上に飛び乗ることに成功して、そこからホップを繰り返して塀の上にたどり着けました。やった〜！奇跡の様。その後はもう木の中に隠れてしまったので2度と見つけることはできませんでした。 – After a while, suddenly, the chick succeeded to hop on a nearby bench, then hop onto the next level, and finally landed on the fence. Hooray! It was like a miracle. We would never see the chick again after it went into that tree.
あー、良かった！と安堵すると共に、ちょっぴり淋しいです。6月の初めから7月半ばまでワクワクをありがとう！ – It’s a big relief, but at the same time, we will miss it so much. Thank you wren family for giving us excitement and hope from beginning of June till mid July!
とても歩けそうもないミソサザイの赤ちゃんたちでしたが、早いものです。もう、結構活動し始めてます。 – Wren’s chicks were so fragile and couldn’t do much but sleep and eat, but now they have started moving around more.
太陽の光を浴びて、気持ち良さそう〜。 – It looks so cozy there in the sunshine.
あはっ、髪飾りつけて新しいヘアスタイルですか？ – Wow, a new hairdue with hair decoration?
アインシュタイン風かなぁ。 – Or, Einsteine style?

からかわないでよ〜！羽が生えて来てるのにまだ産毛が取れないだけなんだから。 – Don’t tease me! I already have feathers now but my old downy hair won’t come off yet.

前から見ても、結構イケてるでしょ？ – Here is my front. Am I good looking or what?
わー、もうお兄ちゃんは枝の上に乗ってるって。 – It’s time to get moving. Oldest brother has already hopped onto a branch!
でも、難しそうだそ・・・ – but, it’ looks so hard…

裏庭の様子が、少しおかしいと思っていたんです。 – It was not a usual day in our backyard.
なぜか、ミソサザイが一箇所から離れない。こっちを向いては鳴いてみたり、 – Somehow, the Wren didn’t want to fly away from one particular spot. It looked in my direction and chirped…
左を向いては鳴いてみたり。 – then turned left and chirped in that direction…
そーっと、そーっと、バラの根元を覗いてみると、わ〜っ！ – Shhhh, looking into the lower part of a rose bush, ever so quietly, we found them!!!
1、2、３羽もいる！赤ちゃんたちを守っていたんですね。お疲れ様です。 – One, two, and three chicks! The wren was protecting its babies. Good job!
まだ眠ってばかりのミソサザイ赤ちゃん。ところで、巣箱の方はどうしちゃったんでしょうねぇ。使ってたとばかり思ってたのに。 – They don’t do much, they simply sleep a lot. By the way, I wonder why they didn’t use the birdhouse? I thought they were using it.
バラの低木の奥の方なので、安全そうですが、大丈夫かなぁ？翼の下から赤い肌が見えてるし、蛇とか来てもまだ逃げられないよ。 – It seems somewhat safe down there at the deeper part of the rose bush, but there is no protection for them, although they are well hidden. Can you see its pink skin under the wings? No way they can run away from a snake, for example.
