日本語名はホシワキアカトウチョウです。北アメリカに住むスズメの仲間です。 珍しい鳥ではなく、北カリフォルニアに住んでいた時は裏庭でよく見かけました。The Spotted Towhee belongs to the sparrow group and it lives in North America. It’s not a rare bird. I have spotted it even in our backyard when we lived in Northern California.
赤い目が印象的ですよね。The red eyes, aren’t they impressive?
名前が全てをあらわしてくれます。ホシは星のように白い斑点。ワキアカは脇が赤いから。セイントジョージの町付近には住んでいませんが、標高2,000メートルまで来ると見かける事ができるんですね。 We don’t see them around St. George, but they are in the surrounding higher elevations at about 6,000 feet and above.
3日間続く野鳥の会のバードフェスが昨日から開かれました。The three day long Bird Fest started yesterday.
レッドクリフ野鳥保護の会のフェスティバルが昨日から始まりました。鳥に関するワークショップが朝から深夜まで3日間びっしり詰まっています A variety of workshops are held from morning till midnight for three days.
昨日は高原地帯に住む鳥のワークショップに参加しました。ザイオン国立公園の西側、ラムズノールからラバポイントへ、標高1936ｍから2404ｍの間に生息する鳥の観察です。We went to a workshop observing mid to high elevation birds. It was from Lamb’s Knoll, 6,353 feet, to Lava Point, 7,890 feet, on the west side of Zion National Park.
主に小さい鳥なので、動きがとても早い。だから、撮影はとても難しかったです。We saw mainly small and agile birds. So capturing them was very difficult.
かろうじて撮れたのは8種類でしょうか。編集できたらアップします。 I took over 800 shots and about 8 different birds are in them. I will upload them when I finish editing them.
私は明日の5Kレースを控えているので今日は休みました。でも、明日、レースの後、再び参加します。 I didn’t join the workshop today because my 5K race is at 7am tomorrow. I will join them again after the race.
同じ食べ物でも、鳥によって食べ方が違います。当然のことなんですが、目撃してウヒャッと思いました。Birds eat same food differently depending on the kind of bird. It’s a silly statement to say it, but I was shocked when I observed it.
こちらはオオアオサギがモグラを飲み込むところです。連写をビデオにしました。（注：ちょっとショックかも）This is a Great Blue Heron swallowing a gopher. I made a video from rapid repeat still shots.
その後、お腹の中で食べやすくなった餌を巣の上に戻し、子供たちはそれを食べるようです。 After the food becomes somewhat softened in her stomach, she spits it out onto the nest. Her chicks will eat it from there.
一方、こちらはアカオノスリです。ご主人が持ってきてくれたモグラを引きちぎって食べていました。子供が生まれたら、小さくちぎった餌を口から口へと与えます。 On the other hand, Red-tailed Hawks eat differently. The female ate a gopher which her husband brought back to her by biting chunks off using her beak. When her chicks are born, she will feed the smaller pieces to her chicks, beak to beak.

ところで、アカオノスリがもうすぐ産まれると言っていました。 By the way, Red-tailed hawk said that babies are coming real soon.
チャックワラトレイルは岩登りの練習場が入り口付近にあることで有名です。 The Chuckwalla trail has a nice rock climbing practice area near the trailhead.
そんな若者を横目に、私たちは往復7.25ｋｍの道を歩きました。 We started hiking by looking at young people on the rock. The round trip was 4.5 miles.
この道の名前はチャックワラトカゲをよく目撃するから名付けられたようです。でも、まだ涼しい季節です。もっと暑くならないと出会う事はないでしょう。その代わり、今年初めてのトカゲに出会いました。 The name of the trail is “Chuckwalla” because chuckwalla lizards are often seen around there. We didn’t see any of them however because it’s still not hot enough. Instead, we could see a side blotched lizard. It’s my first lizard of the year!
前足の脇、付け根の所が黒いのでワキモントカゲと名付けられています。The name comes from a feature on the lizard where there is a black blotch on the side behind the arm of the front legs.
小さなイワミソサザイです。This is a rock wren.
追いかけていたら岩の奥の方に飛んで行きました。きっと巣があるに違いないと探しましたが、見つかりませんでした。 The wren was flying here and there and went into a slit in a large rock. We followed it and looked for its nest, but couldn’t find it.
古い大きなコットンウッドの木です。威厳ありますよね。This is a large old cottonwood tree. Isn’t it impressive?
近寄ってみると、テントキャタピラーの巣が至る所に作られています。テントのような巣を作るのでそう呼ばれています。 When we went closer, we found many tent caterpillar’s nests on the tree branches. They are called “tent caterpillars” because the nest is really like a tent.
それぞれの巣の中には200から300の卵が入っていると言われています。想像するとちょっと怖いです。でも、孵化して毛虫になると、鳥の食べ物になったりするわけで、自然の仕組みの素晴らしさを感じます。 Each nest holds 200-300 eggs. We are talking about only one nest here. There are probably 100 or more nests on the same tree. I don’t even want to imagine the number of caterpillars as it’s not my favorite subject. But I know, at the same time, that they are an important part of the circle of life. When caterpillars come out from it, some of them will be bird’s food.
鳥の巣を探して歩いたハイキングでしたが、一つも見つかりませんでした。でも、この砂漠地帯の季節の変化をたくさんみることが出来ました。 We came here to look for birds’ nests, but we didn’t find any. Instead, I could see all of nature’s changes as Spring returns to this wonderful place in the desert.
４.2ｋｍの短いハイキング。コットンウッドの木々がしげる山道を辿っていくと、いた！ アメリカワシミミズクです。On a short, 2.5 mile long trail through cottonwood trees, we looked for Great-horned owls. There, we found them.
スヤスヤ。Sleeping peacefully.
「こんにちは〜！」 ” Hello!”
スヤスヤ。Sleeping peacefully again.
「あのう。。。」 「何？」 ”Sorry to bother you…” “What?”
スヤスヤ。 Back to sleep.
「もう赤ちゃんが産まれたかなって思って、来てみました。」”We thought your babies already hatched. So we came here.”
「静かにしてくれる？今、昼寝中。それに今年は子供なし。」 “Be quiet! We are in the middle of napping. And we have no babies this year.”
オオアオサギの卵が孵化しました。 The eggs of Great blue heron hatched.

野生動物の世界です。アカオノスリが近くの木の上でじっと見つめています。 This is the world of wildlife. A red-tailed hawk was watching them from a nearby tree.
子供たちが巣立てるようになるまで 2-3ヶ月間、お父さん、お母さん、お疲れ様です。それまでこうして天敵から守っているんですね。 It takes 2-3 months for the chicks to fledge. Until then, parents need to protect their chicks like this from predators.
ザイオン国立公園の山々が見える場所。 We could see mountains of Zion National Park.
さらにパインバレー山脈が一望できる。 We could also see the entire Pine Valley Mountains.
そんな場所にある小さな赤い岩の岸壁に、アカオノスリの巣を発見することができました。野生動物になるとバンちゃんの目は千里眼となります。 Having the power of second sight, Banchan found the nest of a pair of Red-tailed Hawks up high in a small hole in the red rocks of this gorgeous place.
巣の中にはすでに卵がある様で、夫婦交代で暖めてます。 It seemed that eggs were laid in the nest already. So the husband and wife took turns sitting on them.
ちょっと遠い場所なので頻繁に観察しに行けるわけではないですが、2-3 週間後にまた行きます。その頃までに卵が孵化していたら興奮します。 Although we can’t go there so often because it’s not so close to our house, we want to go back there again in 2-3 weeks. I am very hopeful that the eggs will hatch by then.
ところで、この鳥の名前のアカオノスリは、赤い尾だからそう付けられた様ですが、赤い尾を今まで確認できませんでした。でも、今回その赤い尾をバッチリ確認できました。 By the way, we know that the name of bird comes from its red tail. I have seen them so many times in the air or in trees but I have never quite seen the red color on the tail until now.

久しぶりにスノーキャニオンを見渡せる場所に行きました。往復8.5ｋｍのハイキングです。It is 5.3 miles round trip to Snow Canyon Overlook.
長い石がゴロゴロしている山道を登ってきて、突然、目の前に広がるこの景色はいつみても息をのみます。After a long rocky uphill, the view that suddenly spreads out in front of you makes everyone speechless.
今日は800ｍｍの超ロングレンズを持ってきました。鳥の巣を撮りたかったからです。でも、一生懸命岩肌を舐めるように見回しても一つも見つかりませんでした。We brought 800mm long lenses today because we wanted to capture any bird’s nest. I carefully went through all walls in the canyon, but found nothing.
諦めて後ろの岩を見上げると、I gave up and looked up at the rock behind me, and noticed the top of the rock was white.
てっぺんが白い。これは鳥のフンです。鳥の種類は分かりませんが、ここが一番高い場所ですから鳥が好んで止まる見張り場所になっているようです。 It must be bird’s poop! It’s the highest place around here. I don’t know what kind of bird it could be, but surely it liked to use that spot as a look-out place.
しばらく待っていましたが、誰も飛んで来てくれませんでした。We waited there for a while, but no birds flew over, so we gave up.
ここから見えるパインバレー山脈。北側にはまだ雪が積もっていて、冬の名残を感じさせてくれます。 We could see the Pine Valley Mountains from there. The snow on the north side of the hill made me feel cold.
でも、この高度の高い場所にも確実に春はやってきています。But, I know Spring is coming even here at such a high altitude. See?

わー、もう少しでブーケになりそう。 This one is spreading a bunch of flower stems. It’s almost there to be a beautiful bouquet.

サンタクララ川の川向こう、オオアオサギの巣のコロニーを発見しました。 Beyond Santa Clara river, we found a colony of Great Blue Herons.
強風と、曇り日とでコンディションは良くありませんでしたが、オオアオサギの観察をしながら楽しいひとときを過ごしました。 We enjoyed observing them so much although it was a windy and cloudy day.

「でも、やっぱり私が行きます。お父さんは魚を釣って来てください。」”Oh, I will take him back home. Would you go and get a fish for us?”
その後日が沈んだ後も、お父さんが一人、湖畔の氷の上で獲物が来るのをじっと待っていました。Later on that day, the father was sitting by an icy lake even after sunset. He was waiting patiently for a fish to catch.
零下11度の夜はこうしてふけていくのでした。寒い！ The night went on like this down to 11 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. Soo cold!!!
