若鶏を見分ける – Identifying Immature Birds

春の嵐、風の強い日にワシを求めて出かけました。たどり着いた所はセイントジョージより硬度が高いので、まだ寒い。そして強風と曇り空、天候はよくありません。- On a strong windy day like a spring storm, we went out to look for eagles.  The place we went to was much higher altitude than Saint George, so it’s still very cold.  With strong wind and cloudy weather, it wasn’t a good day at all.

それでも、白い頭に黒いボディーは遠くからでも見つけられました。というか、遠すぎます。- But still, we could see Bald Eagles with white heads and black bodies from far away.  And they were very far away.

そして、ここにも。And there it is, too.

でも、みんな飛んでないんです。なぜか。- But for some reasons, none of them were flying.  Why?

彼らはエネルギー節約のために、グライドするのが好きなんです。だから、地面が温められた午後、上昇気流に乗って、あまり羽をパタパタさせることなくグライドするんですね。だから、こんな日は、頑張らない。カラスやタカたちは風に向かってパタパタしても、全然前に進んでいませんでした。成長した白頭鷲はそんなバカなことは最初からしないんですね。 – It’s because they like to glide in the air to save their energy.  To do that, they go out in the afternoon, because an ascending air current is created by the Sun heating the ground.  Ravens and some hawks were trying to fly but were mostly blown away by the wind or struggled just to stay in one place.  So adult eagles didn’t fly on such a day.

「残念だけど、もう帰ろう。今日は期待できないよ。」と私。ところが突然、ジャーン！遠くからでもちゃんと認識できる大きな鳥。こっちに向かってこようとしている。- “Let’s go home.  We can’t expect to see any eagles today,” said I.  But suddenly a large bird appeared in front of us. Although it was far away, we could recognize that it’s trying to come our way.  Here it is.

「これは、何？イヌワシ？それとも・・・」と、私。　- “What is this?  Is it a Golden eagle? or…” said I.

ばんちゃんが「白頭鷲の若鶏だよ。」- “It’s an immature Bald Eagle” said Banchan.

一気にテンションが上がります。 – Immediately, I felt invigorated with those words.

もう一羽見つけました。- We found another one.

これも白頭鷲の若鳥かな？と思っていたんですが、よくよく観察して見ると、違う。- We thought this was also an immature Bald Eagle. But after a careful observation, we concluded that, in fact, it wasn’t.

これは、イヌワシの若鳥です。やった〜！！！ついにイヌワシも撮れた！- This is an immature Golden Eagle.  Woohoo!!! Finally, I’ve gotten a Golden Eagle, too!

ところで、若鳥の見分けは難しいですよね。そこでウェブでお勉強して見るとわかりました。腕を広げた時の脇の下が白いのは白頭鷲で、そうじゃないのはイヌワシ。そして、尾の模様が違います。茶色の部分がイヌワシの方が広いです。- By the way, it’s very difficult to identify immature eagles.  So I studied up on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles.  And these are my findings.  Immature Bald Eagles have white underwing sockets when they open their wings.  But immature Golden Eagles don’t.  The tail patterns are also different.  Golden Eagles have wider brown tips than bald eagles.

最初の2枚は2-3年成長した白頭鷲の若鳥。次の2枚は1-2年成長したイヌワシの若鳥じゃないかなーと思います。- The first two pictures are 2 or 3 year immature Bald Eagles.  The following two pictures are 1 to 2 year immature Golden Eagles.  That’s my educated guess based on my study.

それにしても、こんな嵐の日に元気に飛んでいるのは若鳥だけなんて、人間も同じね。- By the way, it’s funny that only immature eagles (young) were flying even in the strong wind.  It’s kind of same with humans, isn’t it?

おまけ版。これがこの日のイヌワシのベストショットでした。力強く風に向かって飛ぶ姿、いいですよね。でも、これを最初から使うのには気が引けました。- This is an extra.  The shot below is an immature Golden Eagle flying against the wind, the best shot of the day.  But I wasn’t comfortable using it.

なぜなら、フォトショップで電線を取り除いたからです。これがオリジナル。言わなければわからない。フォトショップ、すごいね。- That’s because there were electrical lines crossing in front of it’s left wing which I removed using Photoshop.  This is the original.  I know you might never have noticed it if I didn’t say so, right?  Photoshop is indeed powerful.

白頭鷲との遭遇 – Close Encounters With a Bald Eagle

家の近くの小さな池のほとりから、ビーバーダム山脈方向を見渡します。すると、小さい黒い物体を発見。写真中央左め。 – Looking out in the direction of the Beaver Dam Mountains from a small pond near our house, Banchan found a small black object in the air.

ドローン？カラス？ – A drone?  A Raven?

いや、白頭鷲だ！ – No, it’s a Bald Eagle!

こっちに向かって飛んでくるぞ！ – It’s coming this way!

やばい、すごい接近！ – No kidding, it’s coming too close…!

私たちの背面の岩に舞い降りたと思ったら、こんな風に翼を広げて再び飛び立ちました。- It landed on a rock behind us, but took flight again by opening its wings like this.

離陸。 – Lift-off. 

両足を下ろしたままの姿って、ハンググライダーをしている人みたい。- It didn’t tuck in both legs for a while, reminded me of a hang gliding person.

急接近された時は突然のことで、カメラを向けても早くてピンボケ、しかも画像内に収まらない。大興奮の遭遇でした。- When it approached so close to us, it should have been a perfect opportunity for great shots, but most of the shots are out of focus and too large to fit within the viewfinder.  It happened suddenly and too fast, but a great moment of a close encounter with a Bald Eagle.

白頭鷲、やっぱり迫力ありますね！もう北に向かっていく時期なのでしょうか。 – The Bald Eagle is indeed quite powerful.  Could it be almost time to migrate north?

今年初のアメリカツリスガラ – The First Verdin

わっ、アメリカツリスガラがいる！枝の向こうに小さいけど見つけたよ。ほんの少しだけじっとしていてね。- Yes, I found you, Verdin, beyond many branches!  Be still just a little.

今年はついているかな。黄色い頭にオレンジ色の肩パッチ。撮れました！ – I got you!  You are so cute with the yellow head and chestnut shoulder patches.  I have a feeling that I am lucky this year.

ところで、庭の木に見つけたこの巣。下から撮った写真ですが、入り口が下の方にあります。アメリカツリスガラの巣なんですよ。- By the way, this is a Verdin nest found in our garden.  The entrance to the nest is at the side near the bottom of the nest.

わーきれい！こっち向いてくださーい。 – How pretty you are!  Please look this way.

何？僕のこと？  – Who, me?

そう、写真を撮りたいんですけど。- Yes, you.  May I take a picture?

やーだよー！ No, never~!!!

そんなこと言わずに、ちょっとだけ。- It takes only less than a minute. Please!

じゃ、ちょっとだけ。 – Well, then.

また、なんて綺麗な色。別の鳥みたい。- Wow, what a beautiful color.  You look like a completely different bird.

全然知らないの？僕たちの頭の羽は玉虫色なんだよ。だから光の加減で変わるのさ。 – You don’t know anything about us?  Our heads are covered in iridescent colored feathers.  So the color changes depending on the direction of the sunlight and how you look at us.

もうちょっと僕たちのこと勉強したほうがいいね。- You should study more about us before taking a picture of me.

なるほど。勉強します。- I see.  I will do that.

あ〜、疲れた。もう寝る。- I am tired now, I will go back to sleep.

今年初めてのアンナハチドリさん、どうもありがとう！- Thank you for the shots and a quick bird lesson.  You are the first Anna’s Hummingbird I have seen this year!

地球の歴史 – Earth History

地球の歴史とコロラド高原を勉強しています。本やウェブサイトを読んで、一人で地球史マップにノートを書き加えていくのは、意外に楽しい。- I started studying the history of the Earth and the Colorado Plateau.  By reading books and websites, I add post-it-notes with my interests to my history map.  The process of this kind of study is surprisingly interesting.

すでに知っている方は多いとは思いますが、その過程で、私にとっての”驚きの事実”が三つありました。- I have found three astonishing facts while doing this. Although it seems they are known to many people, they new and shocking to me.  Here are those three facts:

  1. アメリカ大陸は今でも動いています。過去の話ではなく、毎日、爪が伸びるのと同じスピードでユーラシア大陸から遠ざかっているんです。この事実を前にすると、いつ地震が起きても不思議じゃない。- North America is moving even now.  It’s not a story of the past, it is moving away from Eurasia with the same speed that our nails grow.  I must say that it’s natural to have earthquakes at anytime.
  2. 地球は今、氷河期にあります。え〜！ですよね。詳しくは、間氷期という、氷河期の中でも寒さが温暖な時期ではありますが。- We are in the middle of an Ice age.  Wow!  To be exact, we are in an “Interglacial” period within the ice age.
  3. 地球誕生から、5回も生物が絶滅しています。この事実を踏まえると、人間も含めて今現在のすべての生物はいつか絶滅する時が来ることが予想されます。– We had experienced five mass extinctions since the birth of Earth.  If so, we can easily imagine that we could have another extinction in the future involving many species including our own species of course.

ね、面白いでしょ？- Isn’t it interesting?

もう一つ、ヒトの歴史は138億年前に起こったビッグバンから見るとカゲロウの命より短いんですよ。想像を超えている世界ですよね。でも、そんなふうに思うと、私たちの人生は今しかないような気になってきます。 This is only my realization that our life is much shorter than a Mayfly‘s life based on the Earth’s history since the Big Bang around 13.8 billion years ago.  It’s way beyond my imagination but I start to think that we should enjoy this short moment on Earth.

水曜の鳥の会 – Wednesday Bird Walk

朝の光が金色に光るバージン川沿い、久しぶりに水曜日の朝の野鳥の会 Red Cliffs Audubon に行ってきました。- It’s been a while since we’ve been on a Wednesday morning bird walk with Red Cliff’s Audubon group.  Along the side of the Virgin River, it was shining like gold.

みなさん、鳥に関してとても詳しいのは当然なんですが、遠くの方の豆粒みたいな鳥でも見つけちゃうのには、本当に感心します。例えば、この写真。すでに400mmにズームしてありますが、鳥が2羽いるの、わかりますか？ – I’ve known that members have a great depth of knowledge about birds, but I still can’t believe that they can find and identify birds from far far away even though the birds are like tiny dots.  For example, this picture.  It’s already been zoomed in using a 400mm lens.  Can you find the two birds in this picture?

ハシボソキツツキのオスとメスがいたんですね。- I see, a male and a female Northern Flicker are in the picture.

私的にはアメリカチョウゲンボウがハイライトでした。つい先日近くで見たばかりですが、飛んでいる姿は今回が初めてです。- The highlight of the day for me was again, an American Kestrel.  I have seen it two days ago already, but this time I could capture it flying.

なんと綺麗！羽のデザインが本物じゃないみたい。- Isn’t it amazing?  The wings look so fake because the pattern on them is so pretty.

その他、私たちだけでは見つけられない鳥がたくさんで、宝箱のような朝でした。- Thanks to bird watching friends, we saw many other birds we normally can’t!  The morning became a jewelry box of birds.

タカとワタリガラス – Hawk and Raven

美しい空の下、アカオノスリが木に止まっていました。- A red-tailed hawk was perched on a tree under a beautiful sky.

よく見かける鳥ですが、好きです。- I like them even though I see them often.

今日はついています。アメリカチョウゲンボウに出会いました。- I was so lucky today.  I could meet an American Kestrel.

かつてはタカの種類と思われていたので、別の名前がついていました。でも、立派なハヤブサの仲間です。- Once upon a time, it went by a different name and was thought to be a type of hawk.  But it’s actually in the Falcon family.

嘆きバトと同じぐらいの大きさですが、仕草から、もっと大きい鳥のように感じます。- The size is only about that of a mourning dove, but by the way it acts it makes me feel that it’s a larger bird.

さて、本題。- Now let me get into the main subject.

突然、ワタリガラスがやってきて、アカケアシノスリに喧嘩をふっかけてきました。- Suddenly, a raven came over and started attacking a Ferruginous hawk.

彼らは天敵なんでしょうか？テリトリー問題でしょうか？ – Are they natural enemies?  Or, was it a territorial issue?

アカケアシノスリよりほんの少し小さめですが、ワタリガラスはかなり攻撃的です。一時期は2羽でアカオノスリに攻撃していました。空中でも生存競争は厳しそうですね。- Ravens are a tiny bit smaller than Ferruginous hawks but quite aggressive.  I once saw two ravens team up and attack a red-tailed hawk.  It’s a tough survival competition even in the sky.

 

ミード湖の隣 – What’s Next to Lake Mead

ザイオン国立公園内を流れ、渓谷を作ってきたバージン川は南下して、やがてコロラド川に合流しミード湖に流れ込みます。ミード湖と言えばフーバーダム、最大貯水量は322億トンと言われています。ちなみに日本最大のダム、徳山ダムの最大貯水量は6.6億トンです。日本トップ50のダムの合計でも11億トンしかないことを考えると、その巨大性が少し見えてきます。(データがないので明確には言えませんが、日本のダム、2700の総合計でも到底300億トンには及びません。）近くのラスベガスはもとより、カリフォルニア、ネバダ、アリゾナ州の人々の大切な電力となっています。 – The Virgin River flows downward through Zion NP and joins the Colorado River at Lake Mead.  Lake Mead is a reservoir created by the famous Hoover Dam.  The reservoir is the largest in the United States by volume, over 32 billion cubic meters (when full).  You can imagine the size of it by comparing to Japan’s dam. The volume capacity of Tokuyama Dam, the largest in Japan, is 0.6 billion cubic meters.  Even the total of the top 50 dams in Japan only goes up to only 1.1 billion cubic meters.  (I can’t say for sure since I don’t have data of all 2700 dams in Japan, but I can easily imagine that it won’t go up to 30 billion by adding all of them.)  The electricity created by Hoover Dam is an important energy resource for people not only in Las Vegas, but also for California, Nevada and Arizona.

さて、地図を見ると、その隣に火事のように赤い部分があります。名前の由来がわかりやすい、バレーオブファイヤー州立公園です。- Let’s look at the map below.  The red-colored area, looking like a fire, right next to Lake Meed is Valley of Fire State Park.  I wonder where the origin of the name came from.  ::grin::

遠くからの眺めでは、ポコポコと岩が特記しているところから、アーチーズ国立公園のような雰囲気がありました。でも、ふと足もとを見ると、紫や黄色の層が見えます。- From far away, it gave me the impression of being similar to Arches National Park because the roundish rocks were here and there on the vast plain.  But then, I discovered a purple, yellow, etc. colored stratum at right around my feet.

これは面白い。- Interesting.

おおおー！アンテロープキャニオンみたいだ。- Wow, it’s like Antelope Canyon.

わ〜〜〜！- Nice!

ラスベガスからの帰りにほんの 1 – 2 時間ほど立ち寄っただけなので、まだ全容がつかめてません。- I still don’t have an overall sense of this place since we stopped by here for only a couple hours on the way back from Las Vegas.

また来なければ！- We must come back here again!

ちなみに、この公園の石を形成する地層はアズテック砂岩層と言われています。今やセイントジョージの住人となった私にとって、家の周りに見られるナバホ砂岩層に非常に似ているアズテック砂岩層が気になります。- By the way, the rock formation in this park is called Aztec Sandstone.  The rock looks quite similar to Navajo Sandstone which I can see around our house in St George.  It’s curious, isn’t it?   

そこで調べて見ると、この方のウェブサイトに出会いました。- So I researched a little on the web, then found the site below.

Our Geological Wonderland: Navajo Sandstone

The Aztec Sandstone is exposed in Red Rock Canyon State Park in southern Nevada. These rocks are considered to have formed at the same time as Navajo Sandstone and in similar wind controlled depositional environments. These formation names have been undergoing revisions by the U.S. Geological Survey, but most online sources still use the traditional names.

要約すると、両者ともほぼ同時期に同じように生成された砂岩層で、目下アメリカ地質調査所(USGS)が名前の改変をしている最中ですが、まだほとんどのウェブサイトでは今まで通りの名前を使用しているとのことです。- To summarize the paragraph, both formations are from about same timeframe, and the way it was made was also quite similar.  So the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is on the way to revising them.

ちょっと感動です。- I am moved by it.

目に見えない昔を調査して、想像力を働かせてセオリーを立証する。地球の始まりを調査する旅は、結局、宇宙を調査する旅につながって、無限大みたいだね。- We can’t see ancient times, so we expand our imagination and establish a theory.  I feel that studying the formation of Earth can expand into space.  It’s like an endless journey to infinity.

パインバレー山脈 – Pine Valley Mountains

パインバレー山脈はザイオン国立公園コロブテラスロードからも見えます。ハイウェイ15号線を隔てて反対側にあります。つまり、ハリケーン断層の反対側とも言えます。 – The Pine Valley Mountains are visible even from Kolob Terrace Road in Zion National Park.  They are on the other side of HWY 15.  It means that you can say they are on the other side of Hurricane fault.

メサからも見えます。こんなに長く連なっています。この山脈は実は世界最大のラコリスがあることで有名です。- You can see them from Mesa as well.  Aren’t they long?  They are actually famous because they are formed from a laccolith which is the largest in the world.

私の家の裏庭からは見えませんが、ちょっと歩けばすぐ見えます。この角度からだと、どれほど大きい山脈かわかりませんでしたが、メサから眺めてその大きさに驚きました。- I can’t see them from our backyard, but the peaks start to show up soon when I walk around our neighborhood.  Our view is side view, so the mountains don’t look as large. But I prefer the view from our neighborhood.  

パインバレー山脈は St George の街をどっしりと守ってくれているような雰囲気があります。- Pine Valley Mountains remind me of a fatherly figure that is protecting the town of St George.

西へ – Going West

コロブテラスからスミスメサ、そしてメサロードへと向かいます。再び、自家製地図を参照。- We switched from Kolob Terrace on to Smith Mesa and Mesa road.  See my map below.

ここはすでに公園の外です。そして道は舗装道路ではなく、赤土となります。雪や雨が降ると通れるのかどうか心配です。特にメサロードの数カ所はオフロード車でないと危険かもしれません。- It’s already outside of Zion NP.  The road  is unpaved red dirt.  It could be very bad in the snow or rain.  There are a few dangerous spots on Mesa Road which might require an offroad vehicle.

ハリケーン断層があった後も残っているメサ。牛や馬が放牧されています。Even after Hurricane Fault, the Mesa remained. Cows and horses are grazing there.

この一帯の地形は地質学の知識がない私でも面白い。なぜなら何十億年も前から続いていた地殻変動を目の前で確認できるからです。とりわけわかりやすいのは、2500万年前から始まったハリケーン断層です。はっきりと自分の目で確認することができます。- It’s simply fascinating to see the earth formations around here, even though I don’t have much of a background in geology.  Especially seeing the Hurricane Fault, which began 25 milion years ago, it is easy to understand how it works, because I really can see it clearly.

<バンちゃん提供、Contributed by Banchan.>この斜面の向こう側にハリケーン断層が走っていて、断崖絶壁です。横から見るともっとわかりやすいですが、こちら側が上に押し上げられています。 – The other side of the slope is a sharp cliff. This side clearly shows the uplift that has occurred.

Red Butte: ビュートはメサの浸食がさらに進んだ孤立丘。As a Mesa’s erosion progresses, the top of the Mesa gets smaller and becomes a Butte.

高校で習った地学は何も覚えていません。毎時間、眠ってばかりいましたからね〜。でも、こんな校外学習があったらきっと好きになっていたと思います。- I don’t remember anything from high school geology class because I always slept through the class.  But I am sure that I woud have loved geology if I could have had a field trip to this area.
