Awesome Ironman

The Ironman World Championship ended, though some athletes may be still running. The event came to St. George from Hawaii for the first time this year.

Yesterday’s Ironman Village

I volunteered last year for the half Ironman race at the goal line. It was such a memorable moment. This time, I helped at the aid station near our house.

The first athlete (maybe)

The job was to hand off a water bottle to an athlete. Easy, right? Well, actually, not so easy. See the video below. He dropped the first bottle and got the second bottle successfully.

I will be volunteering at the celebration banquet tomorrow night.

Mountain Blue Bird

This is a male Mountain Blue Bird. I am so moved by the refreshing blue color. The female Mountain Blue Bird is unfortunately gray. They live in western part of North America.

By the way, the Ironman World-championship is tomorrow.

I will volunteer starting in the morning again. I am so excited about it already, and looking forward to see the dramatic moments.

Ash-Throated Flycatcher

The Ash-throated Flycatcher is, as the name says, a bird that catches insects while it is flying. It’s an early riser and finishes its chores in the early morning. That way it can stay quiet during the day to avoid hot weather. Oh, another important fact about it is that it doesn’t drink water. It takes liquid from the bugs that it consumes.

I wish I could capture an image of it catching a bug, but it’s nearly impossible with my camera skill.

These are my best shots for the bird flying. Although we can’t see its face, let’s imagine that it has a bug in its beaks.

Black-Chinned Sparrow

The Black-chinned Sparrow lives in the southwest United States to Mexico.

We were lucky that we could capture the male bird clearly showing black color on his chin. The male shows the black chin during the breeding season only. They look very much like female birds without the black chin outside of breeding season.

Juniper Titmouse

The Juniper Titmouse is a tiny bird with a crested head living in pinyon or juniper trees。

They look very much like the Oak Titmouse but its color is more pale gray compared to the Oak Titmouse which are more brownish. They also live in different places. The Juniper Titmouse lives in the region of 2,250-8,000 feet elevation in juniper woodlands. On the other hand, the Oak Titmouse lives in Oak trees in California.

Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay

The Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay is similar to the California Scrub-Jay, but the chest color is more grayish and the beak is narrower.

Some say that they can be seen standing on the backs of mule deer. They pick off and eat ticks from the deer, so deer don’t mind them on top of them. How nice to know they help each other. I sure hope to see such a sight one of these days.

Spotted Towhee

The Spotted Towhee belongs to the sparrow group and it lives in North America. It’s not a rare bird. I have spotted it even in our backyard when we lived in Northern California.

The red eyes, aren’t they impressive?

We don’t see them around St. George, but they are in the surrounding higher elevations at about 6,000 feet and above.

Bird Fest

The three day long Bird Fest started yesterday.

A variety of workshops are held from morning till midnight for three days.

We went to a workshop observing mid to high elevation birds. It was from Lamb’s Knoll, 6,353 feet, to Lava Point, 7,890 feet, on the west side of Zion National Park.

We saw mainly small and agile birds. So capturing them was very difficult.

I took over 800 shots and about 8 different birds are in them. I will upload them when I finish editing them.

I didn’t join the workshop today because my 5K race is at 7am tomorrow. I will join them again after the race.

Art Walk

We had an Art Walk at our club house in the community we live in. And Banchan made his debut for displaying his photographs.

The opportunity came to him suddenly. So he didn’t know what to do to make his booth at first, but with the organizer’s advice, he came up with a very nice booth.

I only helped him to carry pictures and stands.

Some people wanted to sell their art work, but some simply wanted to display their work.

We didn’t expect anything out of this, but he sold one of his pictures!!!

I found a sculpture piece that I wanted to buy. But when I went back there the second time, it had been sold already.

I enjoyed talking to a variety of people. Some of them paint pictures during their vacations. Some of them make things when they have a little time. In any case, I understand that all of them enjoy doing things that they love to do. I was inspired from them very much.

Wrong Course

Today was my last training day before the race. So I went to the race course before 7am to run the actual course.

I made a new personal best time, 35:23, and my condition is very good.

To make sure all is well, I visited the race site and looked at the course map again.

Wait. Something is different from my running map.

Oh no, I ran along the Virgin river all the way to the mid-point instead of the correct course into Cottonwood wash.

Hilarious!

Do I have time to check out the course? Lets see… We have a big event tomorrow, and I should rest the day after tomorrow because it is the day before the race day. Ummm, well, I will take this as a lucky find, and that’s it.
