フクロウ目 Owls

鳥の分類、続いてます。 Bird classification continues.

フクロウは大きく2種類に分かれます。メンフクロウ科とフクロウ科です。 Owls are divided into two main families. The family Tytonidae (Barn-owls) and the family Strigidae (True owls).

メンフクロウ科の中にはメンフクロウしかいません。は名前が示すように、お面をつけているような顔が特徴です。 The Barn owl is the only member of the barn owl family. It is characterized by a masked face.

メンフクロウは世界中に分布していますが、私は一度も目撃したことがありません。英語の名前の通り、納屋とか廃屋などでも見られるそうです。この辺にもそんな場所がありそうなので鳥の会の人たちに聞いてみます。 Barn owls are distributed all over the world, but I have never seen one. As the name suggests, they can be found in barns and abandoned buildings. I will ask the birders about such places around here.

フクロウ科には無数のフクロウが属しています。列挙しきれないので、私のリストには目撃したもののみを入れました。 Countless owls belong to the owl family. Since it is impossible to enumerate them all, I have included only those that I have seen in my list.

フクロウ科の１種目はアナホリフクロウは いくつかの点でユニークなフクロウです。　One member of the owl family is the Burrowing owl which is unique in several ways.

  • 日中でも動き回る。 They move around even during the day.
  • 飛べるけど、地上を走り回っている時間の方が長い。だから足が長いのね。 They can fly, but they spend more time running around on the ground. That’s why they have long legs.
  • 地面に穴を掘って住む。 They live in burrows in the ground.

眉毛が白くておじいさんみたいな顔してますね。ジャシュアツリーの上に停まっていました。 In the picture above, he looks like an old man with white eyebrows. It was perched on top of a Joshua tree.

アメリカワシミミズクは私にとっては一番馴染み深いフクロウです。 The Great Horned Owl is the owl most familiar to me.

ここは「フクロウの森」です。勝手に名付けました。そこに入ってみると、確かにフクロウが生息するにはもってこいの場所でした。 This is “Owl Forest”. I took the liberty of naming it. When I entered there, I found that it was indeed a perfect place for owls to inhabit.

音を立てずに辺りを見渡すと、コットンツリーの上の方、トトロのような物体を発見しました。高鳴る気持ちを抑えて静かにシャッターを切りました。 I looked around without making a sound and spotted a Totoro-like object at the top of the Cotton Tree. I suppressed my rising emotions and quietly clicked the shutter.

鬱蒼として暗い中、しばらくすると崖の上の方の棚に巣があり、それを覆い隠すようにコットンツリーの枝が伸びていることがわかりました。更に私たちの目が暗さに慣れてくると、2羽、３羽、４羽と合計5羽見つけることができました。 It was dense and dark, but after a while we found a nest on a ledge at the top of the cliff, with Cottonwood tree branches growing up to cover it. As our eyes further adjusted to the darkness, we found a total of one, two, three, four, five birds.

ここはワシミミズクの家族が住んでいるところだったんですね。そして、ヒナが3羽巣離れをしたばかりだったのかもしれません。 So this was where a family of Great horned owls lived. Maybe three chicks had just left the nest then.

私たちの家にも時々訪れてくれます。 They visit our house from time to time.

昼も夜もウサギが飛び回っている環境です。彼らにとってはよりどりみどり、スーパーマーケットの状態です。下の写真はうさぎをゲットした直後、それを引きずりながら石の影に隠れようとしているところです。 This is an environment where rabbits are hopping around day and night. It is a supermarket situation for them. In the photo below, just after getting a rabbit, he is trying to hide behind a stone, dragging it behind it.

最後に紹介するのはニシアメリカオオコノハズクです。 Lastly, I would like to introduce the Western Screech Owl.

夜中、大きな木が立ち並ぶ川沿いの森の中、鳥の会の人たちと時折聞こえる鳴き声を頼りに歩き回りました。 In the middle of the night, in the forest along the river lined with large trees, I walked around with the bird club members, relying on the occasional hoo, hoo.

シャッターチャンスは3回ありましたが、夜中の撮影は非常に難しいので、これが最後に撮れたベストショットです。ネズミを捕獲したばかりだったので、ラッキーでした。 I had three opportunities, but this was the last best shot I could get taking pictures in the middle of the night. I was lucky because it had just captured a rat.

名前が示すように、日中は木の葉のようにカモフラージュしてジッとしているそうです。 As the Japanese name suggests, they are said to camouflage and stay still during the day like leaves on a tree.

昨日の独立記念日をみなさんはどう過ごされましたか？　How did you spend Independence Day yesterday?

暑いので、私はグータラと家の中で過ごしました。 It was so hot outside and I just stayed inside the house goofing around.

すると、ロビンの子供が裏庭に舞い降りて、何か言いたそうです。 Then a juvenile Robin swooped down in the backyard and said something to me.

あ、そうか。独立記念日のお知らせをしてくれていたんですね。 Oh, I see. You’ve been informing us about Independence Day.

大抵、１月ごろ、春を告げてくれるロビンですが、昨日は特別サービスをしてくれたようです。 Most of the time, around January, Robins herald spring, but the day before yesterday it provided a special service for me.

夜、花火が遠くから聞こえてきた頃、ミスタートッドがやって来ました。 At night, when fireworks could be heard in the distance, Mr. Toad hopped over.

あ、そうか。花火のお知らせをしに来てくれたんですね。 Oh, I see. You came to let us know about the fireworks.

暑い中、お疲れ様でした。 Thank you for your hard work in the hot weather.

そして、私はボーッとして、何もしない状態に戻りました。窓越しに見える花火を時折見ては、ゲームをしたり、テレビを見たりと、のんびりした独立記念日でした。 Then I went back to zoning out and doing nothing. It was a lazy Independence Day, playing games and watching TV, with occasional glimpses of fireworks through the window.

しばらくお休みしていましたが、鳥の分類を細々とですが、再開します。　I have been taking a break for a while, but I am resuming bird classification, albeit in a very small way.

英語でこの目をAccipitriformesと言います。ただ、発音が難しくて覚えられません。（カタカナに強いて書き直すとアクシピトライフォーメスとなるでしょうか。）そこでここでは英語訳を Birds of Prey としました。ただし、ハヤブサを除きます。In English this order is called Accipitriformes. However, it is difficult to pronounce and I can’t remember it. Therefore, I have chosen Birds of Prey here. However, falcons are excluded.

タカ目は陸上の鳥類の王者たちという印象があります。鋭い爪やクチバシは私たちを容易に近づけません。 The hawks have the impression that they are the king of land birds. Their sharp claws and beaks do not allow us to approach them safely.

タカ目 –> ヘビクイワシ科 –> タカ科の中には更に無数の亜科があり、その下に無数の種が存在しているという、大所帯です。Birds of prey–> Sagittaridae –> Accipitridae (small to large birds of prey) are a large family, with countless subfamilies and countless species under them.

タカ目の中で特に私の注意を引いた鳥は３種あります。　There are three species in this category that particularly caught my attention.

第一にコンドルです。コンドルというと多くの場合、アンデスコンドルを指します。世界で一番大きい猛禽類で、南アメリカの西海岸側に生息しています。The first is the condor. When people around the world say condor, they often refer to the Andean condor. It is the largest bird of prey in the world and is found on the west coast of South America.

北アメリカの西海岸とザイオン国立公園近辺にはカリフォルニアコンドルが生息しています。アンデスコンドルより小さいですが、それほど小さいわけでもないのが意外でした。翼を広げた時の長さは3.2メートルと2.7メートルとわずか50cmの違いです。　The California Condor is found on the west coast of North America and near Zion National Park. It is smaller than the Andean condor, but not that much smaller, which was surprising. Their wingspan is 3.2 meters and 2.7 meters, a difference of only 50 cm when they spread their wings.

全てのかリフォルニアコンドルにはタグと無線アンテナがついています。 All California condors are equipped with tags and radio antennas.

ところで、コンドルの頭が禿げている理由をご存知ですか？　By the way, do you know why the condor’s head is bald?

大型動物の死体に頭を突っ込んで餌を取るので、不衛生にならないようにするのが目的だとされています。生きていくために進化してきたのでしょうか。　It is believed that the purpose is to avoid unsanitary conditions as they poke their heads into the corpses of large animals to feed. Have they evolved to survive?

似たような面白い点は、彼らは他の猛禽類とは違い、爪がまっすぐで尖っていません。攻撃して餌を獲得する必要がないからです。これも生きるために進化した結果でしょうか。　A similar interesting point is that they, unlike other birds of prey, do not have straight and pointed claws. This is because they do not need to attack to acquire food. Is this also a result of evolution for survival?

さて、次の注目の鳥はヘビクイワシです。その存在すら知りませんでした。　Now, the next bird of interest is the Secretarybird. I did not even know it existed.

身長は私と同じぐらいで、アフリカの草原に生息しています。飛べるけど、主に陸上を歩き回るようです。名前の如く、ヘビを捕まえて食べます。YouTubeにはヘビを捕まえる時のビデオが多数出ているので、ぜひご覧ください。美しい容貌でヘビを捕食する姿は不思議です。例えばこちらのビデオ。　They are about my height and live in the grasslands of Africa. They can fly, but seem to roam mainly on land. As the name suggests, they catch and eat snakes, and there are many videos of them catching snakes on YouTube, for example like this video. It is a wonder to see them preying on snakes with their beautiful appearance.

3番目の注目の鳥はオウギワシです。この鳥の存在も知りませんでした。　The third bird of interest is the Harpy eagle. I did not even know this bird existed.

この鳥も大型です。南米の熱帯雨林に生息します。時速70km前後で13cmもある鉤爪で獲物を捕まえると書かれています。その衝撃はライフル銃から放たれる弾丸と同じだとも書かれています。睨まれたら、一巻の終わりですね。サルでもオオカミでも捕まえて飛び立てるらしいです。怖！YouTubeのビデオはこちら。　This bird is also large. It inhabits the tropical rain forests of South America. It is written that it catches its prey with its 5 inch claws at a speed of around 43.5 miles/hr. The impact is said to be the same as a bullet from a rifle. If it stares at you, it’s the end of your life. It is said that they can even catch a monkey or a wolf and fly away. Scary! 以上、３種は共通して大型の鳥で、猛禽類です。無敵のはずなのに彼らの生息数は減少していて、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。理由は彼らの生息する場所減少しているからです。熱帯雨林の木が伐採されたり、農地が増えてきているからだと言われています。　These three species are large birds of prey. Although they are supposed to be invincible, their population is declining and they are listed as endangered. The reason is that their habitat is declining. It is said that this is because trees in tropical rainforests are being cut down and farmlands are increasing.

私たちも同じ動物界に属しています。なんとか共存して行ける道はないものでしょうか。　We also belong to the same animal kingdom. Is there any way we can coexist with them?

Canon の R5 カメラ用に Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens を買いました。 I bought aanon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for my Canon R5 camera.

シャープさに欠けるかなと心配だったので、簡単なテストをしてみました。 I was worried that it might not be sharp enough, so I did a quick test.

ISO 100, F4, AV focus で105mm, 70mm, 50mm, 24mm の順に撮ってみました。 I took these shots at ISO 100, F4, AV focus at 105mm, 70mm, 50mm, and 24mm in that order.

こちらのラベンダーも同様の設定です。The lavender photo here is set up the same way.

どちらも修正、編集なしです。Neither is modified or edited.

どんなもんですかね。少し甘い気がします。How is it? It seems a little soft.

クロップしてシャープさを増してみました。　I cropped and sharpened the image.

編集後のイメージに違和感がなければいいかな。I hope the edited image is not too different from the original.

このレンズは軽いので、旅行用には最適です。また、お値段も手頃です。同じくCanon からでている こちらのCanon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens は2.5倍もお高くなっていて、しかも望遠ズームレンズのように重くなっています。 This lens is lightweight, making it ideal for travel. It is also reasonably priced. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens also from Canon, is 2.5 times more expensive and heavier, like a telephoto zoom lens.

満足度90％なので、これからはこのレンズが活躍することになります。 I am 90% satisfied with the lens, so it will be my go-to lens from now on.

誕生日のプレゼント Birthday Present

皆さんは誕生日にどんなプレゼントをもらいたいですか？ What kind of gift would you like to receive for your birthday?

私の場合は、去年も今年も絶対これだとお願いしていました。そしてついにその願いが叶いました。 In my case, I had definitely asked for this last year and this year. And finally that wish came true.

ザ トイレ。 The toilet.

バスルームの改造をした後、ずーっと違和感がありました。トイレが少し傾いていたんです。慣れてしまえば気にならないのかもしれませんが、私には便秘になりそうな違和感でした。It had been uncomfortable for a long time after we remodeled the bathroom. The toilet was a little tilted. Maybe once you get used to it you don’t mind, but for me it was uncomfortable, almost constipating.

左下がたった一枚見つかった昔のトイレです。こうして比べると、新しいトイレは細長くなっているようですね。　Below left is the old toilet. Compared in this way, the new toilet on the right seems to be taller.

今回、トイレ選びをして二つのことを学習しました。 We learned two things from our experience in selecting the toilets.

まず、標準のトイレの座部の高さが時代とともに変わってきているということでした。 First, the height of the standard toilet seat has changed over time.

新しいトイレの座部の高さは16.5インチ (41.91cm)です。以前のものは15インチ(38.1cm)でした。専門家によると、座部の高さは昔に比べるとどんどん高くなっているとのことです。 Our new toilet has a seat height of 16.5 inches. The previous one was 15 inches. Experts say that the seat height is getting higher and higher compared to the past.

今のスタンダードは16.5インチですが、ADA(Americans with Disability Act アメリカの障害者用) のトイレは17-19インチと更に高く設定されています。みなさん、足がどんどん長くなってきているんでしょうかね。 The standard now is 16.5 inches, but ADA (Americans with Disability Act) toilets are set even higher at 17-19 inches. I wonder if everyone’s legs are getting longer and longer.

もう一点は、色のチョイスがあまりないことです。白以外の色のトイレを探すのは至難の業です。今のトレンドがそうなっているんでしょうか。 Another point is that there are not many color choices. It is extremely difficult to find a toilet in any color other than white. Is that what the current trend is?

ゲスト用のトイレも交換しましたが、こちらも同じく白いトイレを入れました。本当はベージュ色を希望していましたが、見つからなかったので断念しました。 We also replaced the guest bathroom and put in a white toilet as well. I really wanted a beige color, but I couldn’t find one, so I gave up.

ということで、何はともあれ、無事に新しいトイレが設置されて、二年越しの願望が叶えられてとてもハッピーです。ありがとう、バンちゃん！ So, at any rate, I am very happy that the new toilets were successfully installed and my two year long wish has been fulfilled. Thank you, Banchan!

スプラウトその後 More Sprouting Attempts

2週間前、初めてブロッコリーのスプライト栽培を試してみました。結果は惨敗でした。 Two weeks ago, I tried growing broccoli sprouts for the first time. The results were disastrous.

翌週、メイソンジャーでの栽培が良いというYouTuberの助言により、ジャーに入れて育ててみました。 The following week, on the advice of YouTubers who said that growing them in mason jars was a good idea, I took their advice and started them in jars.

右がアルファルファで、左がブロッコリーです。 Alfalfa is on the right and broccoli is on the left.

アルファルファはスクスクと成長し、ビンにいっぱいになってしまったので取り出すことにしました。 The alfalfa grew well and filled the bin totally full, so I decided to take them out.

毎回こんなに栽培できるなら毎週栽培したいです。ブロッコリーはその後もう１日おいて終了としました。 If I could do so well like this all the time, I would grow them every week. The broccoli was then left for one more day to finish.

ちなみに、右の写真、フワフワのヒゲのように見えているのは細い根で、カビではありません。By the way, in the photo on the right, what looks like fuzz are actually thin roots, not a fungus.

綺麗に洗った後のアルファルファです。 This is alfalfa after washing.

バンちゃんが全部サンドイッチに入れて食べてしまいました。 Banchan put them all in a sandwich and ate it.

そして今週、次のバッチを日曜日に初めて2.５日が経ちました。今回は割り箸の上に瓶を乗せて水切りをしています。　Then this week, I started the next batch on Sunday and it has been 2.5 days. This time I drained the bottles on disposable chopsticks.

すでにアルファルファは発芽してみます。ブロッコリーはまだ兆候が見えません。　Already alfalfa is trying to germinate. Broccoli shows no signs yet.

ところで、こちらは私のトレーナーのアルファルファです。トレイの上での栽培なのでとっても元気そうです。　By the way, this is my trainer’s alfalfa. It is grown on a tray and looks very healthy.

次はこちらの方法にしてみようか迷ってます。新鮮なスプライト、美味しいですからねー！　I’m wondering if I should try this method next time. Fresh Sprouts are no doubt so good!

ハイキングの喜び The Joy Of Hiking

暑いので、私たちは朝3時半に起きてザイオン国立公園の西に向かいました。 It was hot, so we got up at 3:30 AM and headed to the west side of Zion National Park.

日の出前だったので、月が山の後ろに見えていました。　Just before sunrise, the moon was visible behind the mountains.

これがザイオン国立公園の全体像です。ほとんどの観光客は南ゲートから入り、赤い線で引かれた中心部の渓谷を見て帰ります。残念なことにここはシーズン中は世界中から来てくださる人たちで溢れかえっています。 This is the overall view of Zion National Park. Most visitors enter through the south gate, see the central canyon outlined in red, and leave. Unfortunately, this place is overflowing with people from all over the world during the season.

だから私たちはそこには滅多にいきません。そして、今回は西側に位置するノースゲイトピークに登りました。 So we seldom go there. And this time we climbed Northgate Peak West.

西ノースゲイトピークからは北のガーディアンエンジェルが目の前に見えます。南のガーディアンエンジェルはその後ろに位置します。 From Northgate Peaks West, the North Guardian Angel is visible in front of it. The South Guardian Angel is located even further behind it.

地図を西ノースゲイトピークからの写真に置き換えると、こうなります。 Replacing the map with a photo from Northgate Peaks West, it looks like this:

北と南のガーディアンエンジェルスはその間を流れる川、フォークノースクリークをガードしている山だったんですね。そして、この川こそ知る人ぞ知る、サブウェイと呼ばれる、健脚向けの16kmのハイキングコースです。許可がないと入れません。　So the two Guardian Angels, North and South, were the mountains guarding the river that runs between them, the Left Fork North Creek. And it is along this river that those in the know call the Subway, a 10 mile round trip hiking trail for strong hikers. BTW, You cannot enter without a permit.

ここからの景色を見ながら、ザイオンの全体像が少しわかってきました。 The view from here gave me a little more of an overall picture of Zion.

以下の赤い点線が昨日歩いたコースです。青い点線は先週歩いた山で、パインバレーピークと名付けられています。 The red dotted line below is the trail we hiked yesterday. The blue dotted line is the mountain we hiked last week, named Pine Valley Peak.

地図上でわかるように、長いアプローチの後、白い部分に入ります。つまり、ここから本格的な山登りが始まるわけです。 As you can see on the map, after a long approach, you enter a white section. In other words, this is where the real mountain climbing begins.

トレイルがあるわけではなく急勾配なので、頂上に近い場所は特に神経を使って一歩前に踏み込んで、また次の踏み込み場所を探すというスリリングな山登りをしました。 There is no trail, but it is steep, so we had a thrilling climb up the mountain, especially near the top, where we nervously took one step forward and then looked for the next place to climb again.

ちょっと休憩の豆知識：ザイオン国立公園の岩はナバホ砂岩です。昔海だった頃に堆積が進んでできた場所です。だから砂のような流れの線で覆われています。そして、その後の長い間の浸食作用は重い鉄分を砂岩を浸透して下方へ流していったため、下方は赤く錆びた色で、上方は色が抜けて白くなっているということです。

Here is a short trivia break: The rocks in Zion National Park are Navajo sandstone. They were formed by sedimentation when the area was once an ocean. So they are covered with sandy flow lines. And then erosion over a long period of time exposed the sandstone. Then water washed the heavy iron downward through the sandstone, so the lower part is a rusty red and the upper part has lost its color and is white.

さて、突然ですが、なぜハイキングが好きなんですかと聞かれた、どう答えますか？ Well, it’s a sudden question but if someone asked you why you like hiking, how would you answer?

私の答えは、ハイキングでなくても、ただ外を歩いているだけでも同じです。たくさんの発見があるから楽しくてしょうがないんです。 My answer is the same, even if I am not hiking, just walking outside. I have so much fun because I discover many things during the walk.

発見がたくさんありすぎて消化しきれません。山道を歩いていると、地面の石ころでさえ面白い。下の写真は、コンクリーションが進んでいるものです。何千年もの時を越えて変化していく様を垣間見ているようです。　There are too many discoveries to digest. Even the stones on the ground are interesting when walking along the mountain paths. The photo below shows a concretion in progress. It is like catching a glimpse of change over thousands of years.

こちらはマツヨイグサ。朝見た時は元気だったのに、帰りにはもう萎んでいました。たった数時間の間の出来事です。こんな小さな発見に心を動かされます。 This is Fragrant Evening Primrose. It was healthy like the picture below when I saw it in the morning, but it had already wilted on the way back to our car. It happened in just a few hours. I am moved by such a small discovery.

発見は感動につながります。美しいものはそのままで感動を呼び起こしてくれます。 Discoveries are inspiring. Beautiful things evoke an emotional response just as they are.

苦しい登り道も、体を動かして汗を流すことも楽しいです。美味しいものを食べられるから。 I enjoy the painful uphill climb and the physical exertion and sweat. Because I can enjoy eating good food.

でも、早起きはやっぱり好きになれないなぁ。 But I still don’t like getting up early.

ユタ州の州花 Utah’s State Flower

セゴユリです。　Sego lily.

ザイオン国立公園の西側、パインバレーピークのトレイル沿いに咲いていました。　It was blooming along the Pine Valley Peak trail on the west side of Zion National Park.

この花がなぜ州の花に指定されているかというと、昔、飢饉で食糧難になった時に、この花を食べて命を繋いだと言う話が残されているからです。いろいろなレシピがあるようです。　The reason why this flower is designated as the state flower is because there is a story that in the past, when there was a shortage of food, people ate this flower to save their lives. Even today, there are various recipes for this flower.

ところで、このハイキングですが、気温が40度近くまで上がるので、6時半ごろから歩き始めました。　This hike, by the way, started around 6:30 a.m. because the temperature rises to nearly 105F degrees.

久しぶりのザイオンは気持ちが良かったです。雪もすっかり溶けて、水溜りもあまり残っていませんでしたが、いくつか見つけた所ではカエルが気持ちよさそう泳いでいました。　I hadn’t been to Zion in a long time and it felt good. The snow had melted and there were not many puddles left, but there were frogs swimming happily in some of the places we found.

水は大切ですね。　Water is important.

オーガニック掃除機 Organic Cleaner

綺麗な花がたくさん咲いてくれます。 They are full of beautiful flowers.

そして、毎日、コットンテール達に落ちた花びらを綺麗にしてもらってます。　Every day, we have the cottontails clean up the fallen petals.

しばらく家族、知人に会いにカリフォルニア州に行っていました。1週間しか留守にしていなかったのに、花は散り、さまざまなものが微妙に変わっていることに気づく事って、何だか楽しい。こう言う変化は、毎日の事だと気がつかないからなんでしょうかね。 I was in California for a while visiting family and friends. Even though I was only gone for a week, it was kind of fun to notice that the flowers are falling and things are changing in subtle ways. I guess it’s because you don’t notice these changes if it’s an everyday thing.

帰宅後、早速体力作りを再開しました。同時に、トレーナーからブロッコリーの種と、スプラウトキットをいただいたので、スプラウト栽培を始めました。 After returning home, I immediately resumed physical fitness. At the same time, I started growing broccoli sprouts because my trainer gave me a sprout kit.

説明書をじっくり読みましたが、詳しいことまでは書かれていません。だから自分の判断で進めるのですが、今回はそれがうまく行かなかった例です。 I read the instructions carefully, but they don’t go into detail. So I proceeded on my own judgment, and this is an example where that did not work.

日曜日にタネを水につけてスタートさせて、月曜日からトレイに入れてカバーをして発芽するのを待ちました。 I started the seeds in water on Sunday and put them in trays on Monday, covered them and waited for them to germinate.

火曜日の朝。少し発芽しているのが見えます。 Tuesday morning. You can see a little germination.

この後、YouTubeのビデオで、他の人たちの１日経過した様子を見たのですが、もっと発芽してました。何かが違うのか観察してみたら、2つのことに気がつきました。 After this, I watched YouTube videos of the germination process, and after one day their’s had germinated more. I observed what was different from mine and noticed two things.

皿から水分をもっとしっかり取り除くこと。もう1つは、カバーをしただけではダメで、本当に真っ暗なところに置く必要があること。そこで、お菓子が入っているパントリーの一番下に避難させました。 The water should be removed more thoroughly from the tray. The other thing is that just covering them is not enough, they need to be placed in a really dark place. So I sheltered them at the bottom of the pantry where the snacks are kept.

水曜日の朝。だんだん出てきました。 By Wednesday morning, they gradually came out.

昨日、水曜日の夜です。 Yesterday, Wednesday night, they came out more.

今朝、４日目の朝です。こんなもんかな？説明書によると、黄色い葉が出てきたら暗いところから出して、直射日光を避けて光を与えると言うことです。 This morning, day 4. Is this supposed to be what it looks like? The instructions say to take it out of the dark when the yellow leaves appear and give it light, away from direct sunlight.

念の為、今、午後6時まで待ちました。これからこんな感じで外に出しておきます。　Just to be safe, I waited until 6:00 PM. I will now leave it outside like this.

YouTubeのビデオでは、４日目にはもっとこんもりと大きくなっていました。全然違う。まあ、最初はこんなものでしょうか。簡単そうに見えることでも、難しいものですね。 In the YouTube video, they were much chunkier and larger by day 4. Totally different from mine. Well, I guess that’s how it is the first time. What looks easy at first glance is difficult when you actually try it.

後１日、黄色い芽が緑色になってきたら完成のようです。Wait one more day. When the yellow buds turn green, they are ready to eat.

カンガルーネズミとサバクネズミ Kangaroo Rats and Desert Wood Rats

ネズミはとても苦手です。 I don’t like rats.

でも、野生動物人口の方が断然多いこの地では、無視することはできません。家の中に入って来ない限り、彼らの存在も認めてあげるしかありません。 But in a land where the wildlife population is by far larger, we can’t ignore them. As long as they don’t come into our house, I have to acknowledge their presence as well.

家の西側に設置したカメラには、サバクネズミがほぼ毎晩のように映っています。 A camera installed on the west side of the house shows Desert Wood Rats almost every night.

一方、カンガルーネズミの方は前庭の西側カメラに登場します。 The Kangaroo rats, on the other hand, appear on the west side camera in the front yard.

両者とも夜行性なので、私のカメラに収めることは非常に難しいです。だから映像の質はとても悪いのですが、ringセキュリティーカメラはとても便利です。　Both are nocturnal and very difficult to capture on my camera. So the ring security camera is very useful although the quality of the video is very poor.

両者のわかりやすい相違点は、シッポの長さと、耳の形です。また、カンガルーネズミは名前のとおり、カンガルーのように長いシッポと足を使って飛び跳ねて移動します。ただ、カンガルーネズミの場合は、まるでジャガイモが飛び跳ねているように見えます。以下のビデオでご確認ください。　The obvious differences between the two are the length of their tails and the shape of their ears. Also, as the name suggests, Kangaroo rats use their long tails to hop around like Kangaroos. However, in the case of Kangaroo rats, they look like jumping potatoes. Please check out the video below.
