ダブルレインボー Double Rainbow

去年の11月、アリゾナ州のナバホ国内にあるアーチを見に行きました。　Last year in November, we went to see the arch in Navajoland in Arizona.

下の写真のアーチの中で太陽が地平線に沈むところを撮るのが目的でした。　Our goal was to capture the sun setting on the horizon in the arch in the photo below.

あいにく、雨。眼前は崖っぷちで、足場は狭く、雨で滑りやすくなっていたので、私はアーチ写真を諦めました。雨は降り止むことはなく、カメラはびっしょり、レンズにも水滴がたくさんついてしまいました。　Unfortunately, it was raining. I gave up on the arch shot because of the cliff face in front of me, the narrow footholds were slippery because they were wet from the rain. It never stopped raining, and my camera was soaked and my lens was covered with water droplets.

上の写真には水滴を通して丸い光が映ってしまいました。　The photo above shows the round light reflections through the water droplets.

そして、ふと後ろを振り向くと、なんと、ダブルレインボーが岩を囲む様に架かっていました。　And when I turned around, to my surprise, a double rainbow was surrounding the rock.

ダブルレインボーの 2重の中と外の虹をよく観察すると、7色の順序が逆になって見えるのをご存知ですか？　Do you know that if you look closely at the double rainbow inside and outside the double rainbow, the order of the seven colors appears to be reversed?

上の写真、中の虹では赤が外側で、紫が内側ですよね。でも、外の虹は、紫が外側で赤が内側になってます。なぜ？と思われた方は、こちらのサイト、StackExchange をご覧ください。　In the photo above, in the inside rainbow, red is outside and purple is inside, right? But in the outside rainbow, purple is outside and red is inside. Why? If you are wondering why, visit this site, StackExchange.

光はますます消えていき、あたりはすっかり暗くなっていましたが、後ろの岸壁の光が反射して、アーチはオレンジ色に輝いていました。　The light was fading more and more, and the area was completely dark, but the arch was glowing orange, reflecting the light from the cliff behind it.

明日からバンちゃんの写真のワークショップが始まります。荒野を夜中に歩いていくというのは私には体力的に難しいので、留守番です。彼が絶対素晴らしい写真を撮ってくるのはわかっているので、楽しみです。　Ban-chan’s photography workshop starts from tomorrow. Walking through the wilderness in the middle of the night is physically difficult for me, so I will stay home. I know he will take absolutely amazing photos, so I am looking forward to it.

イルリサット旅行記、6回目。 Ilulissat travelogue, 6th.

ワークショップ初日のセイリングは雨の中をスタートして、帰る時まで雨でした。　Sailing on the first day of the workshop started in the rain and continued until returning in the early morning.

厚い雲が一晩中覆っていたので、いつ陽が落ちて、いつ登ってきたのか全くわかりませんでした。確か、日の入りから日の出までの時間は1時間ぐらいしかなかったと記憶しています。 Thick clouds covered the area all night, so I had no idea when the sun went down and when it came up. As I recall, there was only about an hour between sunset and sunrise.

カメラのISOの数値を1,000からスタートして、10,000まで引き上げました。 I started with my camera ISO value at 1,000 and raised it to 10,000.

クジラと名付けました。 I named it Whale.

さらに露出を下げてシャッタースピードを 1/200 以上に保つようにしました。 I further reduced the exposure and kept the shutter speed above 1/200.

ネズミと名付けました。 I named it Rat.

無理な状況下で無理やり写真を撮っていたので、ノイズのレベルが耐えられないほど高くなりました。泣く泣く切り捨てた写真は1,500枚以上です。例えば以下の写真。ノイズを頑張って消しましたが、空の色の回復はできませんでした。 The noise level became unbearably high as I was forced to take pictures under impossible lighting conditions. I have deleted more than 1,500 photos because of that. For example, I did my best to eliminate the noise from the following photo, but I could not recover the color of the sky.

また、こちらも同様で、ノイズを取りすぎてディテールが無くなってしまいました。 And the same is true here, too much noise was taken out and detail was lost.

それでも楽しかったです。鳥を追いかけ、氷山を探して無心にシャッターを切っていると時を忘れます。 Still, it was fun. Chasing birds, looking for icebergs, and mindlessly clicking the shutter, I lost track of time.

ホッカホカロンを背中に一つ、ジャケット3枚、パンツ3枚の重ね着でも寒かった。指が凍りつきそうでした。 It was cold even with a heating pad on my back, three jackets, and three layers of pants. My fingers were freezing.

みんな寒くて船室に入って行きました。もう本当に暗かった。青い色の世界でした。 Everyone went into the cabin because it was so cold. It was already really dark. It was a blue-colored world.

波と風の音、そして氷山の近くを通る時には、氷山が溶けて流れ落ちてくる音が聞こえていました。 We could hear the sound of the waves and the wind, and as we passed near the icebergs, we could hear them melting and trickling down.

たくさん氷山を見ていたら、陸上の山と同じなんだなと思いました。 Seeing so many icebergs made me think that they are just like mountains on land.

巨大な氷山も陸の岩壁も、いつかはエントロピーの流れに呑み込まれていく。 Both huge icebergs and land rock walls will one day be swallowed up by the flow of entropy.

イルリサット旅行記、5回目。 Ilulissat travelogue, 5th.

さあ、いよいよ6日間のワークショップの始まりです。 Now it’s time for the six-day workshop to begin.

ホテルも移り、まずはオリエンテーションです。 We moved to a new hotel, and the first thing to do was orientation.

参加者は15人ぐらいだったと思います。船は2隻、プロのカメラマンが3人、そして船のクルーが6人か7人ぐらい。 I think there were about 15 participants. There were two boats, three professional photographers, and about six or seven boat crewmen.

そして、夕食も済ませて、夜9時にホテルのロビーに集合し、桟橋に向かいました。 Then, after dinner, we met in the hotel lobby at 9:00 p.m. and headed for the pier.

この日も雨。それでも10,000回以上シャッターを切りました。 It was raining on this day, too. Still, I took more than 10,000 shutter clicks.

今、写真を見直してますが、多すぎてどう処理していこうか悩んでます。 I’m reviewing the photos now, but there are too many and I’m wondering how to process them.

実のところ、ここ数日、目の強烈な痛さに耐えられず、眼科に駆け込みました。想像していた通りドライアイでしたが、ヤスリで擦られたように真っ赤に炎症していました。薬ももらい、一応落ち着いてきているので、一安心です。 As a matter of fact, I couldn’t stand the intense pain in my eyes for the past few days, so I rushed to the ophthalmologist. It was dry eye as I had imagined, but it was bright red and inflamed as if it had been rubbed with a file. I was given some medicine and it has calmed down, which is a relief.

ただ、あまり目を使わないようにと言われたので、写真のリビューはのんびりいきます。 However, I was told not to use my eyes too much, so I will take it easy on the photo review.

晴れ Clear

ヘアカットの帰り道、久しぶりに見た、晴れの景色。 This is a view I saw on the way back home from a haircut. It’s been a long time since seeing such a nice view as the rainy days continued.

この地域では、雨が3月の終わりまで降り続いていることは、とても珍しいことらしい。 Many people said that it’s very unusual in this region for the rains to continue until the end of March.

パインバレーマウンテンを後ろに、MVロックが嬉しそうだ。 MV Rock looks happy with the Pine Valley Mountains behind him.

今日の午後は何をしようかな。 Let me see… what shall I do this afternoon?

初級ピックルボール Pickleball 101

雨の日が続きます。 Rainy days continue.

昨日ピックルボールのクリニックがあるはずでしたが、今日に延期になりました。 There was supposed to be a pickleball clinic yesterday, but it was postponed to today.

今日を期待したのに、やはり雨で、中止となりました。残念です。 I was hoping it would happen today, but it rained again. And the clinic was cancelled. Such a pity.

クラブの会員になったのに、練習の機会がないのは残念です。 It’s a shame that I became a member of the club but don’t have a chance to practice.

家の中で壁打ちの練習できないかな？ I wonder if I can practice by using a wall inside the house…?

Hike 1: MV Rock

今朝、去年から降り続いていた雨が止んで、MVロックに光が差していました。 A ray of light was illuminating MV rock this morning after the recent rains.

昼過ぎには雨雲も見えなくなったので、久しぶりにMVロックまで行くことにしました。 We hiked up to MV rock for the first time in a long time since the rain clouds went far away in the afternoon.

往復、7.25kmのハイクとなりました。 It was a 4.5 mile loop hike.

MVロックの裾野には、ドラゴンと、巨大なターバンを被ったカタツムリが生息しています。 A dragon and a gigantic snail wearing a turban live there at the bottom of MV rock.

雨上がりのすぐ後だったので、苔や地衣類が嬉しそうでした。 The moss and lichen looked so happy because it was right after the rain.

今年、初めてのハイクでした。今年は50回のハイクにチャレンジしたいです。 It was the first hike for the year. I want to challenge 50 hikes this year.

私たちの MV Rock が煙っていた。- Our MV Rock was misty.

レッドロックが雲に隠れてる。こんな景色はこの地に引っ越して来てから初めてだ。- Red Rock mountain is covered by clouds.  It’s my first time to see such a sight since I’ve moved to this place.

昨夜から雨が降り続いている。庭に植えたかったカクタス達は来年の春までポットの中にいたほうがいいらしい。雨が止んだら零下の温度になるからだ。夜になったらガレージの中に移動できるようにワゴンに移動した。すでに植えてあるカクタスはバーラップ布で覆って寒さをしのぐことになるらしい。- It’s been raining since last night.  It seems that my cactus plants need to stay in pots until next spring.  It is because the temperature will drop down to freezing temperature at night.  I put them in a wagon so that I can pull them inside the garage at night.  For those cactus already in the ground will be covered by burlap cloth.

ビーバーダム山脈もほどんどが雲に隠れてしまった。雨は明日まで降り続くらしい。 Beaver Dam mountains are also covered by clouds. The rain will last till tomorrow according to the weather report.  

そんな雨の中でも、いつもの裏庭警備隊長のミスターＱはスクッと立っている。雨の中でも、寒くても、塀の上からみんなの安全を見守っている。- Even on such rainy days, our friend Mr. Q, the chief of backyard security, is proudly standing there.  Rain or shine, cold or hot, he watches over everyone’s safety from the top of the fence.

今年の天候不順、いい加減に例年に戻って欲しい。今日も雨です。
砂漠地帯のこの地、今頃はカラカラに腫れている日が続いているはずなのに。ベイエリアと同じか、もっと寒いぐらい。

裏庭警備隊もさすがにどこかで雨宿りしているっていうのに、この山鳩はどうしちゃったんでしょうか。しばらくじっとして、動こうとしません。

今日のプロジェクトはどうだった？

窓屋がガラスの厚さを間違えてたらしい。だから窓ガラスの入れ替えができなかったんだって。

そりゃ悲惨だね。一日中待ちぼうけってわけだ。

その代わり、明日はコントラクターが4組も来るらしい。

うひゃ〜、目が回りそうだ。

てな会話しているわけないんですが、その通りなんです。電話であれこれ問い合わせて、今週最後の明日に窓ガラスだけじゃなく、家具の配達、ベッドの組み立て、お掃除サービス、ガーデナー、ペストコントロール、などなど、盛りだくさんとなりました。

ところで、たった一人でのこの家の生活も1週間が経とうとしています。少し慣れて来ました。バンちゃんはまだ帰って来られそうにありません。彼の90歳のお母さん、ヘレンの怪我やそのほか諸々の手続きがあるからです。私も来週訪問してあげようと思ってます。

彼がいない間でも家のプロジェクトは着実に進行していきました。

ハウスキーパー、お疲れ！自分へのご褒美は・・・これ。

私の書斎の窓の前。ほんの一瞬だったけど、ご夫婦そろってのご登場をタイミングよく撮れた！

雨が気になる

プールに描かれた波紋が面白そうで、カメラ持参で外に出てみました。
赤葉の枯葉がプールに落ちて風情がありそうなんですが、放っておくと厄介なことになるなーと思いつつもパチリ。
瞬く間に雨が激しくなって来て退散しました。
先週末は箱根ガーデンで撮影会がありました。運良く晴れて、良かった。今週末も引き続き撮影会です。曇り空ならいいけれど、雨は困る。空模様が気になる季節です。

Zion, Bryce 国立公園 7 – 雨とHooDoo

雨は降り続き、予定変更を余儀なくさせられます。でも、じっとしていることもできず、雨中のハイクを決行します。ただ、突然決めたので雨用ジャケットをモテルに置いてきた〜。それが原因か風邪をひき、その後、私の体調は悪化します。

それはさておき雨の中のHooDoo。時折吹き付ける雨の中、カメラをかばいながら公園内の一番高い場所にある道を散策します。しかし、何も見えない。。。20151006-IMG_7996

近くのHooDooからは、まるで息づいているかのように靄が見えました。20151005-_MG_7847

Zionからそれほど離れていないのに、Bryceの気温は華氏で20度も低いと言われています。摂氏にすると30度ぐらいになるのかな？うは〜！高度の違いなんですね。だからこの出で立ち。つい昨日まではタンクトップ一枚だったのに、ジャケットを何枚も着て、思いっきり重ね着です。20151005-IMG_7844

雨と風邪のため、たいしたこともできず、Bryce ロッジで時間つぶし。朝食、昼食、夕食、そして念のためもう一度夕食をロッジでとりましたが、結果は良くなかったです。かといって、公園のすぐ外にあるRubby Inn も美味しくない。

そこで私たちはチョット遠出をして知らない町のレストランに入ります。クロアチアから夏のシーズンだけきている女性。来年シーズン開けまで翌週から閉めてフロリダに行き、その後クロアチアに戻るとか。客もまばらなのか、ちょっとした会話から全人生が見えてきそう。EUに加盟したことについての話、などなど、話はついきません。

宿の近くのレストラン。ラスベガスから引退してきた82歳のおばあちゃんはウェイトレスをしつつ、共同経営者でもあります。もう30年もたってしまったということですが、死ぬまで働き続けるって。シェリフバッチをつけて毎日出勤です。多分もう会うこともない人たち。それぞれの人生の一コマに触れただけなのに、ものすごい感動がもらえる。それが旅の醍醐味なんですね。いつまでも元気でいて欲しいから一緒に写真を撮らせていただきました。このレストランも翌週から来年のシーズン開けまで閉めるそうです。20151007-_X5A1419
