9.6 km 登り下りの穏やかなハイキングでした。 It was a 6 mile loop hike with no steep ups and downs. In other words, an easy hike.
見覚えのある山肌を違う角度から眺められてよかったです。 It was interesting to see familiar cliff faces from different angles.
カタツムリの岩と名付けました。 I named it “Snail rock.”
今年、4月にアカオノスリが巣の上で卵を温めている所を発見しました。そして、5月12日に訪れた時、産まれていました。まだ綿毛のようにフワフワの赤ちゃん羽。 We found a Red-tailed Hawk nest in April this year. Both parents sat on the eggs during the incubation period. We visited the nest again on May 12. By this time two chicks were already born. Their feathers were downy baby feathers and they were simply fuzz balls.
5月18日に再び訪れた時には、茶色い羽が少し見えるようになっていました。 On May 18th, we visited again. We could see some brown colored feathers on them.
右側の子は足を前に出して座っているようです。鳥って、こんな座り方するんでしょうかね？子供と時だけかな。 Pay attention to the chick on the right. It seems it is sitting on its butt and large feet are out in front. I didn’t know that they can sit like this. Can they do it only when they are babies?
6月1日に訪れた時には、ほとんど茶色い羽が生えそろっていました。 On June 1st, their backs were all brown already.
もう、中学生ぐらいの子供です。They already look like Junior high kids.
でも、まだまだお母さんたちほどは大きくなっていません。お母さんが飛んでくると、こんな感じで巣穴はほとんどみえまくなってしまうほどなんです。 But they aren’t as big as their mom. When their mom flies over the nest, her wings cover the entire nest. She is that much bigger.

6月1日。With mom on June 1st.
6月1日の段階で、まだお母さんから食べ物をもらっています。巣立ちまで40日から45日と言われています。今日はすでに6月6日、5月1日に産まれたとしたら、あと1-2 週間ぐらいかもしれません。巣立つ前にもう一度会いに行きたいです。 They are still getting food from their mom’s beak as of June 1st. According to the study, it takes 40-45 days before they fledge. Today is already June 6th. If they were born on May 1st, they could fledge in 1-2 weeks. I want to see them one more time before they are ready to go.
チャックワラトレイルの入り口近くの高い岩の上、誰かがいます。 Someone was sitting there at the rock near the entrance of the Chuckwalla trail.
近づいてみると、なんと、チャックワラトカゲでした。 Slowly we went closer to it, Yes, it’s a Chuckwalla lizard!
全長45cm、ヒーラモンスターに次いで大きいトカゲです。ヒーラは毒を持っていますが、チャックワラは持っていません。そこが違いでしょうか。 It’s 18 inches long. I’ve heard that this makes it the second largest lizard in South West in North America after the Gila Monster. The big difference from a Gila Monster is that the Chuckwalla is not venomous, while the Gila is.
チャックワラさん、本当にトレイルの門番だったんですね。 Mr. Chuckwalla, you are indeed the gate-keeper of the Chuckwalla trail, aren’t you?
翌日、再びチャックワラトレイルのチャイロツキヒメハエトリの雛たちを訪れました。今度は100-400ｍｍのレンズ持参です。鳥たちをまともに撮れて気持ちがいい。 We visited the Say’s Phoebe chicks at the Chuckwalla trail the very next day. I carried the 100-400mm lens this time. What a relief that I can capture decent Phoebe pictures with it.
24時間も経っていないのに、なんと雛の目が開いてい増田。小鳥たちの成長は早いです。 It’s amazing that the chick’s eyes were opened this time, less than 24 hours since the day before. Their growth is astonishingly fast.
ビデオも撮りましたが、重いレンズなのでブレブレです。三脚を持っていけばよかったんですが、3kmの距離を重い三脚を担いで行く事は、ちょっと苦しすぎますね。 I managed to record a few videos, but I wished I could have my tripod for it because it’s way too heavy to hold the camera and the lens even a few seconds still. But it’s not so realistic for me to carry such a heavy tripod together with heavy lens to get to the nest, walking two miles on the dirt trail.

ヒーラモンスターばかり追いかけていた私たちですが（依然として目撃できてません）、今年になってからまだリクガメに出会っていなかったことに気がつきました。そこで早速チャックワラトレイルを歩いて来ました。約7km。 We’ve been preoccupied on the Gila Monster and forgot about the Desert tortoises. We haven’t seen them this year yet. So we decided to hike on the Chuckwalla trail for about 4 miles.
今日のレンズは 24-70mmです。リクガメですから 800mmレンズは必要ありません。でも、結局リクガメに出会うこともなく、鳥のざわめきも見逃して、ちょっとしょげていた時でした。I brought my 24-70mm lens today because I wanted to capture tortoises. I don’t need an 800mm lens for that. But we couldn’t find any tortoises. So then I was a little upset because I missed all the bird activity without the long lens.
こんな岩の中から鳥の鳴き声が聞こえて来ました。 But then, I heard constant chirping coming from this rock.
鳴き声が逃げて行かないように、そーっと、ゆっくり近づいていきました。岩の中に入って振り返ってみると、いた！産まれたばかりの幼鳥です。 We stealthily walked towards the sound, hoping that whatever was making it did not run away. When I looked inside, then from the inside looked back towards the entrance, OMG! The source of the noise was there, newly born chicks!
きっと孵化してからあまり時間が経っていないんですね。まだ、目が開いてません。でも、鳴き声は威勢よかったですよ。I assume they hatched not so long ago because their eyes weren’t opened yet. But their chirping voices were quite loud.
この子達は一体誰の子供でしょうか。それを確かめるため、洞窟から出てお母さんが餌を咥えてくるのを待ちました。 Whose babies were they? In order to find out who their parents were, we went out from the cave, and waited for the parents to come back to them with food.
もう〜、望遠レンズが無いことを再び悔やみました。この姿でわかるでしょうか。 I couldn’t express enough how much I regretted not bringing my long lens. Can you identify who it is with this shot?

久しぶりのハイキング。天気も良くて気持ちがいい。 We went for a hike after taking a break for a while. The weather was so pleasant and it was a perfect hike day.
サンタクララ川のそば、そんなに遠くないのに来たことがありませんでした。 It’s not so far from our house but we had never been to this area by the Santa Clara river.
ここにもヒーラモンスターがいるという噂です。 I’ve heard that the Gila monster lives here as well.
6.5 km の手頃なコースでした。 It was a short 4 mile long trail.
ヒーラモンスターを求めてキャニオンの深いところまで分け入りました。 We went into a deep part of a canyon searching for a Gila monster.
足跡を探し求めたり、ヒーラモンスターの食べ物を探したり。でも今日も朝から収穫なし。 We searched for Gila’s food and footprints. But, again we had no luck finding it.
そして、こんな痕跡を発見しました。全てがオーガニックな中で、こんなに正確な円の跡。これは何？ However, we found something very odd. Everything around here is organic. So how in the world we can have such a perfectly circular impression here in the sand? What is it?
まさかUFOがここに着陸した?ナイナイ、あり得ない。 Could it be a UFO landed here? Of course, NOT.
近くにいたスクラブジェイ博士に聞いてみました。 So we asked Professor Scrub Jay who was in a near-by tree.
「はははっ！風の仕業じゃよ。よく見てみるが良い。中心から草が生えてるじゃろ？その草の穂先が風に吹かれて正確な円を描くんじゃ。どうだ、自然は面白いじゃろ？」 ” (grin) It was caused by wind. Look at the center of the circle carefully. A blade of grass is growing in the middle. And the tip of its frond draws a circle when the wind blows. Isn’t the world of nature interesting?”
聞きなれない用語ですが、「歩容解析」とは要するにどんな風に歩いたり走ったりしているかを観察し分析する事です。先日、走っている所をビデオに撮って解析してもらって来ました。 I never heard of the phrase “Gait Analysis” before. It’s an observation and analysis of how you walk or run. I had it done the other day. My therapist took several videos while I was running.
実際に結果を見せられると驚きます。右足を踏み込む時には左の腰が下がり、左の足を踏み込む時には右の腰が下がっていました。コアの筋肉がしっかりしていないので起こる現象だそうです。 It was rather shocking to see how poorly I run. When I step on my right foot, my left side of my abdomen goes down lower than the right side, and when I step on my left foot, my right side of my abdomen goes down lower than the left side. I was told that this happens because my core muscles are too weak.
横からのビデオでは、足を踏み込む時に足だけが前に出ていて、体が膝の上に来ていませんでした。理想は足を踏み込む時には体が膝の上にきていること。そうする事で膝の損傷が少なくなります。 The side view showed me that my body wasn’t on top of my knee when I step on my leg. The body should be on top of the knee to prevent any knee injury.
考えてみると、歩いたり走ったりする動作は誰も教えてくれませんでした。体が自然に習得してきました。どうやらこの歳で、歩き方、走り方を一から学習し直しです。 Come to think of it, no one told me how to walk or run. My body learned it without awareness of details. It looks like I need to re-learn how to walk and run now.
今日、怪我をしたレースの後初めてトレッドミルで体を動かしました。歩く事と走る事を交互にしました。もう筋肉痛はほとんどないように思います。でも、問題は心拍です。知らない間に180以上になっていました。170bpm以下にするために心臓の筋肉も鍛え直さなければいけません。 I ran on the treadmill today for the first time after the race when I was injured. I combined walking and running intervals. I think my muscle is well recovered. The problem is, however, that my heart rate went up above 180 so many times. I need to build heart muscle again to keep it below 170 bpm.
ボコボコの山道を走るオフロードに久しぶりに出かけました。 We went out for an off-road drive. It has been a while since our last time doing this.
早朝の涼しい時間はもう過ぎていたので、あまり野生動物には会えませんでした。でも、遠くジャシュアツリーの上に何か見える。 It was already past the cool morning hours, so we didn’t see much wildlife. But we saw something at a far distance on a Joshua tree.
あの鳥は何でしょう。もう少し近づかないとわかりません。 What could it be. We needed to go a little closer.
黄色いお腹のこの顔は、ニシタイランチョウでした。 Yes, yes, this face and yellow tummy, it’s a Western Kingbird.
さて、次の方はコットンウッドの林にいたアカオノスリです。崖に巣を作るのとばかり思っていたら、コットンウッドの木の中にも作るとバンちゃんが言っていました。 And the next bird was a Red-tailed Hawk in the cottonwood tree forest. I thought they only nest on the walls of tall cliffs, but Banchan told me that they also nest on cottonwood trees.
さて、先を急ぎましょう。と思っていたら、道路スクレーパーです。 Now, let’s move on. But then, a road scraper was working on the road.
横に避けることもできず、しばらく道路スクレーパーの跡をついてノロノロと走りました。 We couldn’t pass by it for a while, so we followed it with ever so slow speed. Eventually, he found a place to pull over to let us pass.
道路スクレーパーと別れると、再び大自然が広がりました。最後に出会ったのはロングホーンの親子です。 Once we say good-by to the road-scraper, a vast great natural landscape opened out in front of us. And the last animal we encountered were a parent and child pair of longhorns.
牛はオスもメスも角を持っていると言うのをご存じですか？オスのツノの方が少し大きいと言われています。さて、このロングホーンはオスでしょうか。メスでしょうか。 Do you know that both male as well as female cows have horns? The male horns are bigger than female horns normally. So then, I have a question for you. Is this longhorn parent a male or female?
私の予想はメスです。根拠はツノは長いけど細い事です。それに、この顔、お母さんらしいです。（笑） My guess is it’s a female longhorn. The reason is the thin horns although they are long. Besides, the face looks like a mother. (lol)
今日もヒーラモンスターを求めてハイキングです。いつの間にかクレオソートブッシュの黄色い花は白いフワフワ綿毛になっていました。 We hiked again today in our search for a Gila monster. Without knowing it, the yellow flowers of Creosote bush have now changed to soft cotton-like white balls.
「シジュウガラの仲間のバーディンさん、こんにちは。」 “Hello, Mr. Verdin.”
「ヒーラモンスターを見かけませんでしたか？」「ヒーラ？」 “Have you seen a Gila monster?” ” Gila…?”
「あっちの方で見たかも。」 “I might have seen it that way.”
「本当？わーありがとう！」 “Really? Thank you!”
喜んで歩いていくと、巨大なキノコ。バンちゃんより大きいキノコが立っていました。 We walked toward the direction the verdin told us. And we found a gigantic mushroom bigger than Banchan.
今日もヒーラモンスターに会えませんでした。 Ugh! We still couldn’t find a Gila monster.
それはローズマリーの木の横で突然起こりました。 It happened right next to the rosemary bush.
トカゲがガレージの横を注意深くローズマリーの木の方向に歩いて来ました。そして、ローズマリーの木の30ｃｍぐらい前で立ち止まりました。何か躊躇しているような催眠術にかかったような様子。 A lizard was walking along the garage door towards our rosemary bush. And he froze about 10 inches in front of the rosemary bush. It seems that he was hypnotized by something.
その間1秒、ヘビが突然木の中からジャンプしてトカゲに襲いかかりました。Only a second or so later, a snake jumped out from the rosemary bush and attacked the lizard.
トカゲは地面から30ｃｍ以上ジャンプして去っていきました。ヘビはスルスルとローズマリーの木の中に消えていきました。 The lizard jumped up high as well about 10 inches and ran away. The snake also slithered away into the rosemary bush.
私には一瞬の出来事で何がどうなったのかわかりませんでした。ただ、ヘビはトカゲを捕まえ損ねたことは理解できました。 I couldn’t comprehend exactly what had just happened. I understood however that the snake failed to catch the lizard.
そして、残ったものは、このシッポ。 And the only thing left at the scene was this lizard tail.
ヘビはトカゲのシッポに噛み付いていたんですね。折れた所がその証拠です。その先の先端はトカゲ自身が命をかけて自分で切り落とした切り口です。 The snake actually bit the lizard tail. The bent section is the proof of it. The tip of the tail is the section the lizard himself released to protect his life.
家のガレージの前での短くも一大格闘劇でした。 It was a very short but grand drama in front of our garage.
ヒーラモンスターを求めて再びスノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。 We went to Snow Canyon State Park again to find a Gila monster.
