夜空の神話 – Tale of Gods in the Night Sky

ギリシャ神話の神様達は本当に自由奔放ですよね。生の人間そのまま。ゼウスもポセイドンも今なら刑務所行きです。- I think that Gods in Greek mythology were free-spirited.  They were like raw humans. Both Zeus and Poseidon would need to go to jail if they lived now.

さて本題。北の空に見えるカシオペア座は、”Ｗ”の形でとてもわかりやすい星座です。このブログの為に調査してみると、椅子に座っている姿だということがわかりました。その理由は、ポセイドに処罰されたからなんです。なぜ？それがお話です。- Back to the main subject,  Cassiopeia constellation is easy to identify in the northern sky with the shape of “W”.  I didn’t know this, but the shape of “W” is the figure of Cassiopeia sitting on a chair according to Wikipedia and other sites.  It’s because she was punished by Poseidon.  But why?  That is the tale I want to write about.

全ては彼女の「自惚れ」から始まります。- Everything started from Cassiopeia’s conceit.

カシオペアはペルシャの王様の妻でした。彼らにはアンドロメダという娘がいました。カシオペアは自分と娘の美貌を自慢し、海の女神や精霊より美しいと豪語してしまいました。それを聞いた女神は激怒して海の神、ポセイドンに何とかして欲しいと訴えます。（私からしてみればカシオペアも海の女神もまるで女子高生です。）- Cassiopeia was the wife of Ethiopia’s king.  And Andromeda was their daughter.  Cassiopeia boasted about her daughter and herself being more beautiful than sea nymphs.  Sea nymphs raged when they heard it, and pleaded Poseidon to do something to Cassiopeia.  (My comment: Grow up ladies!  You act like high school girls.)

そしてポセイドンは女神の訴えを聞き入れます。ペルシャにケートスという怪獣を遣わして、災害を引き起こします。困ったペルシャの王様は神託に頼ります。災害をなくすためには、娘のアンドロメダを生贄に捧げるしかないというお告げです。アンドロメダを崖に縛り付けて生贄にしました。その姿が空に見えるアンドロメダ座なんですね。（たかが女の自惚れに、ポセイドン、やり過ぎ。可哀想なのはアンドロメダです。美しいというだけで何も悪いことしてない。あー、美貌の持ち主じゃなくてよかった！）- Poseidon accepted the plea, and sent a sea monster, Cetus, to Ethiopia to cause disasters. The king of Ethiopia didn’t know what to do with it, and spoke with the Oracle.  The Oracle said that he needed to bind Andromeda to a rock as prey for the monster, Cetus, as a sacrifice.  The shape of the Andromeda constellation we see right next to Cassiopeia is from this scene, Andromeda tied on a rock.  (My comment: It’s only women’s vanity.  Poseidon, you did, too much!  Poor Andromeda, on the other hand.  She did nothing but her mom expressed vanity.    What a relief that I am not vain.)

そこへ我らがヒーロー、ペルセウスの登場です。彼は神々の父ゼウスの息子です。お母さんは人間なので、半分偉大な神の力がありました。夜空に描かれている彼の姿は、メデューサ退治の帰り道のものです。だから、左手にはメデューサの頭を持っています。さて、アンドロメダが崖に縛られているところを見て、ペルセウスは彼女を助けます。どうしたかというと、手に持っていたメデューサの頭を怪獣ケートスに見せたんです。メデューサのパワーはすごいですね。頭だけになっても怪獣ケートスを石にしてしまうことができた。寸前のところで助かったアンドロメダは、その後めでたくペルセウスと結婚しました、とさ。（ケートスは日本神話のヤマタノオロチ、ペルセウスはスサノオノミコトににてますね。最後はハッピーエンドでよかったね。）- Then, here comes our hero, Perseus!  His dad was Zeus, the god of gods, and his mom was a human.  So, he had one half of mighty god’s power.  His figure on the sky we see is returning back from having slain Medusa.  That’s why he holds Medusa’s head on his left hand.  When he saw Andromeda on a rock in chains waiting to be killed, he decided to help her.  How did he do it?  He held Medusa’s head against the monster, Cetus.  Medusa’s power was so strong that even just her disembodied head turned Cetus to stone.  He set Andromeda free, married her, and lived happily ever after. (My comment:  Cetus’s story sounds like Yamatanoorochi, from Japanese mythology, and Perseus is like Susanoo-no-Mikoto also from Japanese mythology.)

そしてカシオペアに戻ります。その後誰からも救われることなく、玉座に座ったまま永遠に北極星の周りを回り続けることになったということです。（結局、彼女が撒いた種ですからねー。玉座の彼女の絵はそんなに可哀想でもないし。）- Now back to Cassiopea.  After Poseidon hung her on the sky, no one rescued her from there.  So she is still sitting on her throne, but needs to go around and around the north star forever. (My comment:  Seems fitting. After all, she caused all the mess.  She doesn’t look so unhappy by looking at some drawings of her anyway.)

夜空のダンス – Night-sky Dance

数日前、近くで開かれた国際ダークスカイ協会(IDA)のミーティングに参加して来ました。夜の空は暗いに越したことはない。でも、東京で育った私にはここ、St George, UT の夜空は十分暗いと思っていました。ところが、年ごとに人口が増えるにつれて急激に暗さを失って来たとのことです。詳しいことは、後ほど書きます。- We attended The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) meeting a few days ago.  Of course, in my opinion, it’s best to have a dark sky to.  I thought we have pretty dark skies in St George, UT based on my Tokyo night sky experiences.  However, we are drastically losing the darkness as more people have moved into the area.  I will write about the IDA some other time.

今朝、月がもう少しで新月になる夜、11月24日の朝3時半ごろ夜空を観察して見ました。 – I woke up around 3:30 am this morning, November 24, 2019 and began to observe the night sky. It was good viewing since the Moon is almost new and the sky is dark enough.

ベッドルームから見える北の空。北極星を中央にして、カシオペア座と北斗七星（切れてしまって全部は入っていませんが）です。遠くにMV Rock に続く丘が見えます。- This is a view to the North from our bedroom.  I can see Cassiopeia, Big Dipper, and Polaris every day.  The hill which leads us to MV Rock is also visible on the right.

でも、お隣さんの光・・・ But our neighbor’s lights..!

改築しているせいか、家中、家の外も全部点けっ放し状態です。朝3時、誰も住んでいないし、仕事をしているわけでもないのにこの光は困ります。この光がなかったら、天の川がカシオペア座の後ろを通って見えていたかもしれない。- The entire house lights are left on all the time.  We observe that they are under construction.  But still, it’s three o’clock in the morning, no one lives there, and no one works there.  If there weren’t those lights, I could see The Milky Way running behind Cassiopeia.

こちらは南南西のオリオン座。  – This is Orion on the SSW sky.

こちらもひどいですね。この方向には球技場があり、使用後、消灯されず夜中スタジアムライトが点いていることがよくあります。オリオン座の一等星ベテルギウス、プロキオン、そしてシリウスで作られる冬の大三角形はその向こうに天の川が流れているはずです。 – This doesn’t look good either.  There is a baseball stadium in this direction.  The extremely bright lights are quite often left on all night long even after the game.  The Winter Triangle, formed by a supergiant star, Betelgeuse, Sirius, and  Procyon is also visible.  And The Milky Way should be running through there, but it is not visible.

夏になったら綺麗に見えるはずの天の川です。それまでになんとかなるでしょうか。 – It’s known that The Milky Way is more visible during Summer.  I hope we can do something about both situations by then.

ところで、オリオン座のベテルギウスはとても人気があり、西の空の牡牛座の角にも使われています。拙い絵ですみません。牛というよりウサギみたい。 – By the way, one of the stars in the constellation of Orion, Betelgeuse, is quite popular.  It’s used for Taurus’s horn as well.  Sorry for the bad picture, but see below.

そして、次の写真が私の好きな北西の夜空です。カシオペア座とペルセウス座、そしてアンドロメダ座が見えます。ギリシャ神話を読んだことがある方はこの三者の関係をご存知かもしれない。詳しいことは明日、書きます。プレビューとして、夜空のショットを添付します。 – To me, the north-west sky is the most interesting.  It’s because I can see Cassiopeia, Perseus, and Andromeda.  If you have read Greek Mythology, you already know the relationship between them.  I will write about it in tomorrow’s blog post.  For today, I want to show this image as a preview.

最後に、もう一度北の空。北極星のある小熊座を中心にカシオペア座、北斗七星（大熊座）、見えますか？一年中北極星を中心にダンスしてくれているんです。 – Lastly, I want to show the north sky image again without notes.  Can you identify Cassiopeia and Big Dipper(Ursa Major)?  And also Polaris as a part of Ursa Minor in between them?  They are there all year round, dancing around Polaris.

私たちの MV Rock が煙っていた。- Our MV Rock was misty.

レッドロックが雲に隠れてる。こんな景色はこの地に引っ越して来てから初めてだ。- Red Rock mountain is covered by clouds.  It’s my first time to see such a sight since I’ve moved to this place.

昨夜から雨が降り続いている。庭に植えたかったカクタス達は来年の春までポットの中にいたほうがいいらしい。雨が止んだら零下の温度になるからだ。夜になったらガレージの中に移動できるようにワゴンに移動した。すでに植えてあるカクタスはバーラップ布で覆って寒さをしのぐことになるらしい。- It’s been raining since last night.  It seems that my cactus plants need to stay in pots until next spring.  It is because the temperature will drop down to freezing temperature at night.  I put them in a wagon so that I can pull them inside the garage at night.  For those cactus already in the ground will be covered by burlap cloth.

ビーバーダム山脈もほどんどが雲に隠れてしまった。雨は明日まで降り続くらしい。 Beaver Dam mountains are also covered by clouds. The rain will last till tomorrow according to the weather report.  

そんな雨の中でも、いつもの裏庭警備隊長のミスターＱはスクッと立っている。雨の中でも、寒くても、塀の上からみんなの安全を見守っている。- Even on such rainy days, our friend Mr. Q, the chief of backyard security, is proudly standing there.  Rain or shine, cold or hot, he watches over everyone’s safety from the top of the fence.

フードゥーが起きる時 – When Hoodoos wake up

早朝のブライスキャニオン国立公園。さあ、太陽が見えてきた。 – Early morning at Bryce Canyon National Park.  Sun is coming up now.

そして、フードゥー達も起きてきた。- And Hoodoos are getting ready to wake up.

わー、真っ赤に燃えてるみたい。 – Wow, it’s like they are on fire.

おや？エッサホイサ誰かが掛け声と共に登ってくる。- Oh? Heave-ho hop hop, someone is coming up from the hoodoo canyon.  

あ、チップモンク君か。もう寒くなっちゃったけど、早朝は気持ちがいいね。- Ahh, it’s you, Chipmunk. It’s so cold, but doesn’t it feel good in the early morning?

写真家達も寒い中、夢中になってる。アシスタント(友人)は寒そうだな〜。- Photographers are also enjoying the morning.   But I am sorry for you, photographer’s assistant (our friend).  You look cold.

The Fab Four コンサート

昨夜、The Fab Four ファブフォーのコンサートに行って来ました。きゃ〜！ – I went to The Fab Four‘s concert last night.  Yeah!

グループの名前の通り、（Fab はFabricate の略で”模倣”)ビートルズの模倣4人組、ビートルズを記念、賞賛しての4人組というところでしょうか。トリビュートバンドです。 – They are as the name represents, a tribute band of The Beatles.

私は知りませんでしたが、彼らはすでにかなり有名で、テレビ出演も海外公演もバンバンしています。 – I didn’t know this, but they are already quite famous.  They have appeared on TV and performed all over the world.

そんなバンドのコンサートに突然招待されて、行ってきたというわけです。コンサート最後に撮ったグループ写真。私も完璧にど真ん中に写っています。- I was luckily invited to go to a live concert of this rock band.  The picture below is a group shot at the end of the concert.  I am there in the center of the crowd.

ご覧の通り、観客の平均年齢は高いです。ビートルズの活動は1960年代ですよね。その頃にファンだった人たちが圧倒的に多いわけです。でも、みなさんノリノリで久しぶりに楽しいひと時を過ごさせていただきました。コンサートの醍醐味は、観客と共に作られるダイナミクスにあるんですよね。- As you can see, the average age of the audience is quite high.  It’s because it was in 1960’s when the Beatles were active, and a majority of the audience last night were fans from that era. But still they were groovy and singing along.  I think the best part of the concert is the dynamics that is created by the performers and audience together.  This was present for sure last night.

コンサート会場は Tuacahn Center of Arts。ここには野外コンサート会場があり、レッドキャニオンをバックに会場自体がとても魅力的な所です。我が家からは車で10分の所。バンちゃんがいなかったので、友人ご夫妻がピックアップしてくれて、夜の道を運転することもありませんでした。まさにラッキーな夜でした。 – The concert was held at the Tuacahn Center of Arts.  It’s such a magestic location itself having red cliffs around the amphitheatre.  On top of that, it’s only 10 minutes away from our house.  My friend picked me up at my house because Banchan was out of town, so I didn’t need to drive in the dark.  I was indeed lucky to have such a night last night.

秋のザイオン国立公園 – Zion NP in Fall

先週の木曜日に秋のザイオン国立公園に行って来ました。 – We went to see the Fall colors at  Zion National Park last Thursday.

公園内はバス移動しか許されていないので少々不便ですが、忘れ物などをするととても不便です。渓谷内の端から端まで40分、確か10ぐらいのバス停を通過します。 – You must ride a bus to move from one end to the other end of the valley which takes about 40 minutes.  So, it’s quite inconvenient especially if you forget to bring things with you from your car.  

今回のザイオンは 100 – 400 ｍｍのズームを持ってバスに乗り込みました。だから、ほとんどのショットが景色というより景色の切り取りショットになりました。途中、ついに我慢できなくて、5分だけバンちゃんに借りた 16 -35 mm レンズでワイドビューを数枚撮りました。- I brought the 100 – 400 mm lens only on the shuttle bus.  So all of my shots were super zoomed landscape images.  At one point, I couldn’t take it any longer not being able to capture gorgeous views. So I borrowed Banchan’s 16 – 35 mm lens for 5 minutes and took a few nice shots with it. 

ワイドレンズでの景色の切り取りは、難しいです。でも面白い発見があったと満足しています。- It was challenging with super zoom lens for the landsapes, but I am happy with the results because I discovered something new.

なぜ、400ｍｍを持って行ったのか。そのことについては、明日、書きます。- You may ask me why I brought only the 100 – 400mm lens to take landscape pictures.  I will write about the reason tomorrow!

ファーマーズマーケット2 – Farmer’s Market 2

肉まんが食べたくて、先週の土曜日にもう一度行って来た。- We went to the Saint George Farmer’s Market again because we wanted to eat the Chinese steamed buns again.

ポークとカレー味。両方とも好きだ。- I like both Pork and Curry flavors equally.

「その場でアツアツを食べるのがいいんだから、そんなに買っても食べられないでしょ？」とバンちゃんに言われても、たくさん買った。もちろん、その場の新鮮さには劣るけど、冷凍にしておけば、きっと美味しい。- “When you talk about Chinese buns, it’s best to eat hot right there, so buy only the amount you can eat right now.” said Banchan.  But I bought a lot.  Of course, it’s best to eat right there when they are fresh, but it’s still good if I freeze them asap.

ところで、先々週買ったカボチャ、調理して見ました。- By the way, I cooked the Kabocha, Japanese squash that I bought two weeks ago at the Farmer’s market.

日本人ですから、当然カボチャの煮物。自然な味を活かしたくて甘さ控えめにしました。美味しいと思ったけど、バンちゃんは食べようともしてくれませんでした。ガックリ・・- I know how to cook Kabocha only this way,  Japanese Nimono (simmered dish).  I used less sugar because wanted to have its own sweetness out from Kabocha.  I thought it was very good, but Banchan didn’t even try it.  Sad…

10月ももう終わりが近い。ということは、ハロウィーンだ〜！ – October is nearly over.  Do you know what it means?  Halloween!!!

ダンススタジオと、このEntrada コミュニティーでそれぞれパーティーがあるので行って来ます。どんな発見があるか、楽しみ！ – We will attend two parties. The first with our dance studio and the second with the Entrada community.  It’s our first time attending both of them.  It means we will discover something new!

稜線の向こう　- The other side of the ridge

一人でMV Rock の丘に登って見た。 – I hiked to MV Rock alone.

元気がありすぎて走ったりしたせいか30分ほどでベンチに到着。赤線が今日歩いた道。 – I might have had too much energy today.  I ran for part of the hike and got to the bench in a half hour.  The red highlighted line was today’s trail.

今日の目的はこれ。ベンチのある所に立っている自分を家から写真を撮ってもらう事。- The purpose of the hike was to have my picture taken at the bench from home.その後Scout Cave まで行って見た。 – I continued along the ridge to Scout Cave after that.

気持ちがいい。Scout Cave  へ向かう下り坂の前で。 – It felt so good!  This is another shot taken from home right before going down to Scout Cave.

私たちの住む家がある側は・・・東京と比べはいけません。でも、家や道路が見えます。 – This is the view from the ridge looking out towards our house.  You can’t compare with Tokyo, but houses and roads are there.

MV Rock のある稜線の向こう側は・・・自然のままのオープンスペース。 – The other side of the ridge is all open space, untouched nature.

自然がこんなに近い。この地に移り住んでよかった！感謝です。- I realized that nature is right there, so close to our house.  I am glad we moved to this beautiful location.

旅先の出会い – Encounter while Traveling

一人旅はあまり好きではないけれど、意外な発見や出会いはそんな時にある。 – I don’t like traveling alone, but I often find unexpected things and meet interesting people when I do.

ベッド＆ブレックファーストに一人で泊まったのは初めて。でも、暖かいおもてなしと宿泊のお客様達との和やかな会話のひととき。予想を超えて心に残る旅となりました。- It was my first time staying at a Bed & Breakfast alone.  The hospitality of the staff at the B&B was beyond my expectation, and sharing stories with guests was quite comforting. Despite my low expectation, the trip by myself to Denver became one of my favorite trips to retain in my memory.

カレー中華まん – Chinese Curry Bun

土曜の朝のファーマーズマーケット。わけのわからないものがたくさんあって、それが楽しい。 – Saint George’s farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning.  It’s fun to see so many things that I have no idea what they are.

もちろん、農園から野菜も運ばれて来ているので、私たちは玉ねぎ、アボカド、りんご、カナリアメロン、そしてカボチャを買いました。多分バンちゃんはカボチャを食べた事がないので、私の唯一知っている調理法、和風で挑戦してみます。 – Of course, veggies were there from the farms, so we got onions, avocados, apples, canary melon, and buttercup/kabocha squash.  I assume Banchan has never eaten buttercup squash.  So it will be a challenge, but I will try cooking it the one and only way that I know how, Japanese style.

カナリアメロンはお店のお兄さんの指示通り、紙袋の中で熟成するまで眠らせてあります。 – I am keeping the Canary melon in a brown bag as the store person told me to do until it get’s ripe.

パンプキンクリームパイも美味しかった！ – A pumpkin pie with cream cheese in it was also good.

でも、ハイライトは何と言ってもカレー中華まん。めっちゃ美味しかった。あいにく、ポークは売り切れ。次回は断然もっと早く行ってポークとカレーを二つづつゲットするぞ！ – But most of all, the highlight of the day was the Chinese Curry bun/Baozi.  It was so good.  We wanted to get a pork bun but they were sold out already.  So we got curry buns.  I am determined next time to go there earlier and get two pork buns and curry buns each.

ところで、中華まん屋さんのご主人はハワイ出身の半分日本人。日本語も上手に話せていました。これで、この町に日本人が2.5人いるという事がわかりました！ – By the way, the husband of the Chinese bun stand is a half Japanese who came from Hawaii.  He still speaks Japanese quite well. This makes the Japanese population in Saint George to be 2.5.  Yay!

このマーケットは10月末で終了です。寂しいな。ザクロが駐車場の横でたわわに実っていました。やっぱり、今年のマーケットはもうおしまいなんだ。 – The market will end for this year at the end of this month.  I will miss it.  It seems so early to end, but the nearby Pomegranates were hanging from the trees already so ripe.  So it is time.

ディスコナイト – Disco Night

ディスコボールライトがぐるぐる回っているとじっとしていられなくなるのは、私だけでしょうか？  – Is it only me whose body starts moving when a disco ball starts spinning?

土曜の夜、Entrada のクラブハウスで Saturday Night Fever ディスコパーティーがありました。 – There was a Saturday Night Fever disco party at Entrada’s clubhouse last Saturday.

ハッスル大好きカップルと一緒に。 – Together with a couple who love to hustle.

みなさん、ノリノリでダンスフロアはすぐに満杯になりました。バンちゃんの背中の回復がまだということもあり、ハッスルはあまり踊らないんですが、久しぶりに体を動かせて大満足です。 – The dance floor became full immediately as the music started.  We don’t dance Hustle so much especially since Banchan’s back is still not completely recovered, but it was sooo fun shaking and moving my body.

予期せぬことは突然起こるものです。突然起こるから予期せぬ事になるので重複した表現ですね。そんな事件が起こりました。 – An unexpected thing happened suddenly.  Of course, it’s called “unexpected” as it happened suddenly. In any case, such an incident had happened.

美しい日本人女性二人が会場に出現した！ – Two beautiful Japanese ladies suddenly appeared at the party!

日本人は私一人だけかと思ってましたから、奇跡の遭遇です。一人はここに家を所有していらっしゃる事がわかりました。ここには年に1ヶ月ほどしかいらっしゃらないそうです。なぜなら、世界を股にかけてお仕事をバリバリされているので、ＮY、ロンドン、東京のそれぞれに家を持っていらっしゃる。私には想像がつかないランフスタイルです。彼女たちは翌日すでに飛行機に飛び乗って、それぞれの地に向かわれました。 – Because I thought I was the only Japanese in the Entrada community, it was truly a shocking encounter.  One of them owns a house here, but lives here only one month during the year because she and her husband also own houses in Tokyo, London, and New York due to their worldwide businesses.  Their lifestyles are beyond my imagination.  They have already left on a plane for business travel.

またぜひ会いましょうと言ってお別れしました。本当に、ぜひね！！！ – We said “fairwell” to each other agreeing to meet again in the future.  Yes, for sure indeed, meet again!!!

スイスの日 – Swiss Day

先週末、隣町サンタクララでスイスの日のパレードがありました。  – There was a Swiss day parade in Santa Clara, the town next to Saint George.

私のヘアスタイリストのブリトニーがキャンディーを配るからぜひ来てとのことで、行って来ました。  – My hairstylist Britney insisted I should be there because she would be tossing out candies from her float to spectators.  So we went.

ローカルのパレードはいいですね。まだ引っ越して来てから日が浅い私たちにも、数人の顔を確認することができました。みんなのんびりしていて、楽しそう。  – I felt comfortable and could easily relate to the parade and people. That’s because I could recognize a few people’s faces, even though it has been only 5 months since we’ve moved in to this area, and everyone was very relaxed.  I think that’s why I like local parades.

祇園祭はチマキをばらまきますが、ここではキャンディーや水、果物など、ありとあらゆるものがばらまかれます。だから沿道の子供達は忙しい。  – The famous Gion festival in Japan tossed out “Chimaki (a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves)” to  the spectators.  On this parade, all sorts of things were tossed out. Mainly candies, but also bottles of water, apples, etc.  All the kids were so busy catching or picking them up.

ローカルとはいえ、催し物が盛りだくさんです。19年前にスイス人の末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会はのメンバーによってスタートされたそうです。だからスイスの日なんですね。  – Even though it is only a local event, there were so many exhibits, entertainments, and events.  The annual event began 19 years ago by Swiss members of LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).  I see, that’s why it’s called “Swiss Day.”
