パイの中のパイ Pie Inside Pi
今日のパイは大成功でした。 I made a successful pie today.
いつも失敗する最大の理由はパイ生地です。だから、今日は円周率のパイに囲まれているパイ皿で焼いてみました。 For some reason, I couldn’t make a good pie crust last three times. So, I changed the pie dish to the one surrounded by the mathematical constant, π.
見かけは上出来です。切り分けもまあまあ成功です。 The result looked very good, and I could cut it into slices successfully.
味は、五つ星！ The taste was Five Stars!!!
Hike 24: パドレ渓谷 Padre Canyon
パドレ渓谷はスノーキャニオン州立公園内からトゥアカーン野外劇場に通じる渓谷です。私たちは、公園内からスタートして、トゥアカーン側に降っていく出前の尾根まで登り、同じ道を帰ってきました。往復7.8kmの山道でした。The Padre Canyon trail runs from Snow Canyon State Park to Tuacahn Amphitheater. We started from the Snow Canyon State Park side, hiked up to the saddle where sat at the highest point before going down to the Tuacahn side. It was a 4.8 mile long hike.
早朝の光を受けて金色に輝く岩壁が美しい。 The morning light shined on the red rock turning it golden.
朝6時半の空気はまだ優しい。 The air was still so gentle around 6:30 in the morning.
この後長い砂地を歩き、急な登りとなります。 We walked on a long sandy wash, then hiked up the steep trail.
スノーキャニオンはどこを見ても美しい。疲れは飛んでしまいます。Snow Canyon State Park is so pretty no matter where we go. Our fatigue disappeared in front of the views.
たった3時間のハイキングでこんなに素晴らしい景色が見られるなんて、私たちはなんてラッキーなんでしょう。。It took only three hours to go up and back to see this beautiful view. How lucky we are to be able to do so.
今日も元気でいこう。 Let’s be happy today, too!
Hike 23: Snow Canyon Overlook
スノーキャニオン州立公園を展望できる場所までは 4 km です。石がゴロゴロとある山道を登り、崖の端までくると、涙が出るほどの感動に襲われます。あまりにも美しい景色に苦労して登ってきた甲斐があったと思うからでしょうか。 It’s 2.5 miles to get to the Snow Canyon State Park Overlook. The trail requires your full attention on the ground all the time because the trail is full of oddly shaped rocks. Maybe because of that, everyone thinks the view is gorgeous. It is very well worth the hike up to see the view.
ここにはすでに4回も来ていますが、何回見ても飽きない景色です。 We’ve come here four times already, but I don’t mind seeing the view again and again.
ハイキンググループのメンバーとはここで別れて、私たちはここから更に先に進みます。なぜなら、今日は体力トレーニングが目的だったからです。合計 15 km 歩きました。 We said good-bye to the other members of our hiking group here, and walked farther on the trail by ourselves because the purpose of the hike for us for the day was to train our bodies and build our muscles. We hiked 9.2 miles total.
気温はどんどん上がって行きます。私たちの足音と鳥の鳴き声だけを聞きながら、ひたすら登って行きました。 The temperature was going up and up while we hiked up and up. There were no sound but only our footsteps and the chirping of birds.
ナバホ砂岩の美しい模様がある場所を見つけたので、そこで一休み。予定していた距離には少し及びませんでしたが、すでに暑くなってきていたのでそこから戻ることにしました。 We decided to have a break when we got to a hill with pretty patterns. Great nature did a wonderful job on the Navajo Sandstone formation over the many years. Although we wanted to hike a little longer, we returned back to our car from there because it was getting so hot.
暑さを避けて朝７時にスタートしましたが、5時間後に車まで戻ってきた時には38度を超えていました。 次回はもっと涼しい場所でトレーニングしたいです。 We started at 7am to avoid the heat, but the temperature was over 100F by the time we got back to our car at noon. Gee, I want to train myself at a much cooler place next time.
クーパーハイタカ Cooper’s Hawk
私たちの目の前に舞い降りたクーパーハイタカです。鳥の会の人たちによると、まだ成長しきってない幼鳥だそうです。 This is a Cooper’s Hawk. It is still a juvenile according to the Red Cliffs Audubon club people. It landed right in front of us.
まだ頭から首の辺りがまだ白いからだと言っていました。まだ目が赤くなっていないかも。 They said that it’s still white around the head and neck, and the eyes aren’t red enough. So it is a juvenile.
こちらは別の週に見たお母さんのクーパーハイタカです。 This is a fully grown mother Cooper’s Hawk. We saw it on a different day in a different place.
こうして比べてみると、わかります。 I can see the difference now by comparing them like this.
さて、この日はなんと、ヒナも目撃できました。もしかしたらヒナというにはもうちょっと成長しているような、でも、空を自由に飛び回れる幼鳥でもなさそうです。だから、ヒナとしておきます。 And now, we saw a chick near its mom on that same day as the adult hawk. Some people say it has already grown more than a chick. But I am not sure if it can fly out to the sky freely like a juvenile bird. So I say it’s a chick.
ちょっと観察してみましょう。まず、まだシッポが短い。白い産毛がまだフワフワ残ってる。また、背中の羽も生えてきただけで落ち着いてません。 Let’s observe it closely. First of all, the tail is so short. The second point is that it still has white baby feathers around the face and other body parts. And lastly, the feathers on the back are grown but they aren’t stabilized yet.
いや、それにしても可愛いですね。 At any rate, it is so cute!
おやおや？もう片足立ちできるんですね。もう飛べるのかなぁ？ Oh, my! It can stand on the branch by one leg already. Well, can it fly now then?
Hike 22: ねじれた森 Twisted Forest
英語名を直訳してみました。(Twisted = ねじれた、Forest = 森}
ツイステッドフォレストはアッシュダウンゴージ ウィルダネスの中にあります。 The Twisted Forest is in the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness in Utah.
トレイルは往復わずか2.3kmの短い距離ですが、標高が3,000mを超えるので、ゆっくり登ります。 The trail is only 1.5 miles round trip, but the altitude is above 9,800 feet. So we hiked uphill slowly.
頂上に着くと、視界がパッと広がります。The view suddenly spread out in front of us when we got to the top of the ridge.
頂上を見渡して、ねじれた森という名前の由来が理解できました。 I understood the origin of the name, “Twisted Forest” when I looked around there.
森がねじれているわけではなく、木々がねじれているんです。 The forest is not twisted, but the trees that make the forest are twisted.
ツイステッドフォレストはブリスタルコーンパインツリーの群生地だったんです。 The Twisted Forest is composed entirely of Bristlecone pine trees.
青紫色の松ぼっくり。こんにちは。また会えたね。Hello, bluish purple pine cone. We meet again.
もっと頂上の景色を見ていたかったんですが、黒い雷雲がゴロゴロと私たちを追い立てます。雷だけじゃなく、雨でぬかるんだ道も怖いので、早々に山を降りました。 We wanted to stay there longer but the sound of thunder was getting louder. I was scared not only of the thunder, but also of the wet muddy road the dirt road would turn into when the rain started. So we left quickly.
案の定、舗装道路を走り始めると、即、ミゾレまじりの雨となりました。 Once we started on the paved road, the sky became much darker, and heavy slushy rain started hitting the front windshield.
それにしてもまだ昼前。帰るには早すぎたので、ブライスキャニオン国立公園に行く道中にあるレッドキャニオンのビジターセンターに立ち寄りました。Although the sky was so dark, it was still before noon. It was too early to just go home, so we decided to stop by the Red Canyon Visitor Center that was along the way to Bryce Canyon National Park.
そこで2kmの山道を歩きました。 We hiked about 1.2 miles there.
ここは、ブライスキャニオンと同じクラロン地層で覆われています。だから多くのフードゥーが立ち並んでいました。 ブライスキャニオンほど豪華ではないけれど、ミニアチャバージョンを見ているようでした。The park exposes the same Claron formation found in nearby Bryce Canyon. So, many hoodoos were standing there. I must say, it’s not as grand, but it is a miniature version of Bryce Canyon.
レッドキャニオンに別れを告げ、そこから少し車を走らせると、あたりはもうすっかり雨雲に覆われていました。 Saying good-bye to Red Canyon, we drove closer to Bryce Canyon although it was raining and the sky was entirely covered by thunder clouds. Everything looked so dark.
「ちょっと待って。雨の向こうにかすかに光る白いものは何？」とバンちゃん。” But wait! What is it? I see a faint white thing beyond the rain?” said Banchan.
雨雲の隙間を通して太陽の光を受けた岩壁でした。不思議の国のお城みたい。 It was a mountain lit by a shaft of sunlight through a tiny crack in the rain clouds. I thought it was a castle in a wonderland.
突然、私たちのミッションは不思議の国のお城探しになりました。「もっともっと近くまで行こう！」と、車を走らせましたが、近くまで行くと、魔法の光は消えて、不思議の国は無くなっていました。 So then, our mission became the search for the castle in wonderland. “Let’s get closer!” We drove closer towards the rock, but the magic light had disappeared by the time we got closer, and so did the castle in wonderland.
近くで見られなくて残念でした。でも、自然は私たちにワクワクドキドキをくれました。だから、ありがとう、大自然！ Yes, we were disappointed. But hey, we were quite excited with the search. So, I must say, “Great Nature, Thank you for the excitement!”
オリオール Hooded Oriole
水曜日の早朝は、レッドクリフ鳥の会の散策の日です。毎週違う場所の散策をします。面白いことに、2回連続で黄色い頭のオリオールが集合場所でお出迎えしてくれました。 Wednesday is Red Cliffs Audubon’s early morning bird watch day. We go to different places weekly. It’s funny that we were greeted by a Hooded Oriole on the last two Wednesdays consecutively at the meeting locations.

ひょっとして同じ鳥かなと思ったんですが、流石に違いますね。 I wished that they, miraculously, were the same bird, but unfortunately not.
10K: まだ遠い Still Very Far
先週、10Kを走ってみました。 I tested myself for a 10K run last week.
5kmの時点でトレッドミルをリセットするために歩いたら、もう体力が全然ついていけませんでした。心拍が170bpｍを何回も超えて、その度に歩きました。 I reset the treadmill at the 5km point. I think that my condition changed after that. A minute after doing so, my body couldn’t handle running any longer. My heart rate went up over 170bpm so easily, so I walked many times.
10kmは走ったものの、5kmを超えた後に体力の限界があったのかもしれません。 I think that 5K was my physical limit although I completed 10K on that day.
5日間の休息ののち、目標を8kmにして走りました。5kmの時点で同じようにトレッドミルをリセットしました。今回も苦しかった。リセット後、一度歩きました。 It took five days until my muscles gave me a go. I ran again, but aimed for 8K this time. I reset the treadmill at the 5K point again. I was very tired but walked only once during the last 3K.
10kレースへの道のりは長いなぁ。はまだまだ遠いなぁ。 It is still a long way to be up to running a 10K race. 10km is a long long distance.
補足：使用しているトレッドミルは６０分経つと自動的にクールダウンに切り変わってしまいます。だから、６０分以上走りたい場合は、どこかの時点でリセットする必要があります。 Addendum: the treadmill I use switches automatically to “cool down” mode after 60 minutes use. So, if I want to run longer than 60 minutes, I need to reset it at some point to break it into two parts.
ルリイカル2 Blue Grosbeak 2
先週、貴重なルリイカルを目撃しましたが、今週水曜日に再び発見することができました。しかも、家の近くで。 This past Wednesday, we again found the uncommon bird, the Blue Grosbeak. It was only one week earlier when we saw it for the first time. Not only that, this time we found it near our house.
水曜日の鳥の会の人たちのおかげです。一緒に鳥を探しに行くと、今まで見えなかったものが見えてくるから不思議です。This is thanks to Red Cliffs Audubon club people. It is amazing that we are seeing more birds every-time we go out with them.
それにしても嘴が大きい。それが特徴の一つでもあります。 In any case, the beak is so large. It is the one of characteristics of the Grosbeak.
Hike 21: イエローノール Yellow Knolls Loop
レッドクリフデザート保護区の中のイエローノール周辺をぐるりと回ってくる、8 km のハイキングでした。 The Yellow Knolls Loop is a 5 mile hike in the Red Cliffs Desert Preserve.
前半はトレイルを外れて、岩場を昇り降りしました。そこを超えると亀の甲羅模様が現れます。 Our hike was off trail and up on rocky hills, but the turtle shell patterned hills appeared once we went beyond the hill.
自然の作り出す模様は面白いですね。 Nature’s creations always fascinate me.
早起きは苦手ですが、早朝のハイキングはやっぱり気持ちがいい！ I am not good at getting up early, but early morning hikes always make me feel so good.
ルリイカル Blue Grosbeak
先週の早朝、バージンリバー沿いの茂みの中で見つけました。ルリイカルです。見つけにくいとされているだけに、とてもラッキーでした。 We found this bird in shrubs by the Virgin river in the early morning last Wednesday. It’s a Blue Grosbeak. I feel very lucky because it is one of the uncommon birds that is hard to find.
オスです。メスは可愛いのですが、茶色で、こんなに鮮やかな青色とはかけ離れています。繁殖期には、特に青くなるということなので、今がそんな時なのでしょう。This is a male. The female blue grosbeak is not blue at all. It is brown, but cute. The male’s blue color becomes especially blue during the breeding season. So, it must be the time.
昨日紹介したニシフウキンチョウとルリイカルは同じショウジョウコウカンチョウに属します。つまり、親戚同士です。そして、どちらの鳥も息を呑む美しさですね。 The Western Tanager that I talked about yesterday and the Blue Grosbeak are relatives. Both of them are in the cardinal family.
ニシフウキンチョウ Western Tanager
ニシフウキンチョウのオスです。きっと、一度見たら誰でも好きになる鳥。ザイオン国立公園のすぐ近くで見つけました。 This is the male Western Tanager. We found it near Zion National Park. I am almost sure that everyone will like this bird once you see it right in front of you.
「おっとー、行かないで！ 」 “Oh, no. Don’t go!”
「少しだけ、写真撮りに協力してください。」 ” Please cooperate with me only a little while to take pictures.”
「枝の向こうで隠れているつもりですか？バッチリ見えちゃってるんですけど。」 “Umm, do you think you are hiding from me behind the branch? I can see you totally.”
「そうそう、そんな風にポーズをとっていただけるとありがたいです。」”Yes, yes, that’s a nice pose. I like that.”
「わー、なんて美しい。これが今日のベストですね。ありがとう！」 “Yes, indeed, you are a photogenic. This is the best shot of the day. Thank you!”
